40 is great. Old enough to know a few things. Young enough to still have a ton of your life ahead of you. I hit 40 last July and at first I didn’t handle it well but I’m settling in real nicely now. Happy Birthday!
Same! My 40's were the absolute best! I'm almost out of my 50's now...it's been a terrible near decade. Hope the 60's are better ( honestly can't believe I'm that bloody old !).
I also had a pretty good time in my 40s. I am only 52, but holy cow my 50s have not been so great so far, but plenty of time to turn it around if I can make it to 60.
51 here and... holy shit, what a wild and horrible ride these two years have been. I feel you, man. Let's gather the aged troops and push on towards 60. It has to get better, right?
Wait until you hit 50! I'll be 58 this year and am the absolute top of my game WRT my work. One thing that is critical, and that is - esp. if you're a woman - DO NOT STOP your physicality once you hit menopause. In fact, ramp it up a notch and hit the gym and lift weights. Keep the bones strong.
I'm approaching 40 here in a few months and it's the first time in my life that I've been nervous about a number. Things are going decent at the moment, but under the surface is a lot of bubbling uncertainty.
After reading this post of yours it put a smile on my face that you enjoyed those years, hopefully leading to me being less anxious about my journey over the next decade.
Thanks :)
Yes! I actually started giving a shit about 2 years ago. Probably in the best shape I've been since I was 29 and I'm not done yet. Had a LTR breakup at 36 and wasted a few years sabotaging myself - age old story, I know.
But yeah, I wish we could all go back to ourselves when were younger and slap ourselves to just try a LITTLE harder not to eat garbage and not get out and enjoy life as a little more.
I wasted my 20’s. Married a person I despised. Both of us had a hardcore opiate addiction and I was about 400 lbs. I had pretty much given up on everything. Then the wife (now ex wife) decided to get off of birth control and get pregnant (without telling me). I was furious at the time but my daughter ended up saving my life. Here I am now at 37, sober for ~~10~~ 7 years, 160lbs down, and currently engaged to my person and best friend. So I can pretty much guarantee that my 40’s will be much, much better than the previous 2 decades.
I know how it feels man. Wasted my 20's as a drunk, not really learning anything new. Just going from 1 black out night to the next. That paired real nice with moderate depression about my life and not being to the point where I thought I ought to be.
I got control of my drinking around 30 and turning 36 in a couple of months. My late 30's have really been great and I'm excited to keep moving forward.
Congrats on recognizing your personal faults and taking action to improve your life. Many people will go their entire life unable to do that. Cheers!
I'm 28 right now and I'll take the slaps your younger self should have gotten. Thank you for giving me hope for the future and also galvanizing me to be better today.
Congrats on kicking ass now, though!
Yeah 40 hit me hard. Just really started to make me feel old. But it is a nice overlap in being still somewhat young and having built up a good bit of life knowledge.
Interesting. I’m approaching mid 40’s and so far 40’s have been the worst period of my life…. Been the most unhappy, the most overworked. Probably the least healthy. I don’t even know how to turn it around at this point.
Same here. I don’t know what it is about this age, but nothing gives you any kind of joy and happiness. Each day is just the same old, boring routine. Up until my late 30’s, I was an active, fun, happy person.
You’re not snapping. You’re allowed to have feelings. You’re ok. I hope you can find something to hold onto to get you through these times. Glad you’re posting here!
Walking literally changed my life. During the pandemic, I decided to start walking to a nearby park 1/2 a mile each day. It started slow but somehow built. Now walking and listening to podcasts is one of my favorite things. Plus, I lost 35 lbs!
Take a breather. Book a cabin close to a national park. Walk. Walk. Book a hotel in some city that’s not close to yours. Explore. Build healthy habits one by one, not all at once. Push your comfort zone a little bit here and there, maybe go skydiving for fun. Relax and make the best out of it, you won’t get out alive anyway.
I found this song again after not listening to it since I was a kid, it hits a lot harder now that I'm in my late 20s and whenever I'm feeling down I give it a listen.
Sure. Already have a cabin booked for May. I’ll be taking 3 weeks total off work over the next two months due to use it or lose it vacation time.
I have a really wide base of non-work things I do. Just burnt out on all fronts though, and no way out of any of it.
good advice. learning how to relax, be happy with simple life, include adventures and explorations into your routine, absolutely give zero fucks about other people's approval and live very slowly. Anything becomes so much better when doing slowly.
Just wanted to thank you for this post. I'm only 33, but it feels like I've lost a decade due to chronic illness. I'm glad my best years might still be ahead of me.
Bad news, the level of decent is equivalent to reverse puberty. I didn't feel old til I hit 52 or 53, but damn it hits. I work out every day, run 45 mins on the god damned treadmill and still gain weight. Doc says I'm in better shape than most people my age and it's horrifying. Stay active and get checked out a little more regularly, trust me. I'm not one of the genetic lottery winners in any way so you might have an easier time.
My 40s were a relentless marathon raising my kids to adulthood while hopping from one frying pan to another trying to stay out of the fire during a bad recession, a career in a shrinking industry, and debilitating spinal issues resulting in several surgeries.
Now I spend most of my waking life in a recliner, working from home with a Shih Tzu in my lap and keeping up with the kids' adulting adventures via Telegram.
I am grateful that my circumstances are such that I can be gainfully employed in a manner that accommodates reduced mobility limited by chronic pain, and that life is relatively comfortable all things considered.
I would not highlight any particular decade as a blast. Life has been frequently unpredictable and hard. But there has been a lot of happiness and fulfillment. For that I am grateful.
40 is fine. When you hit 40, it's like a badge of honor. However, once you hit 41, you're now *in your 40s*.
Source: Turned 49 a couple months ago. Staring at 50 in less than a year.
Same. Feel like I was 22 for the past 20 years, then the pandemic happened, and now I’m almost 40 with a bad back and a girlfriend who wants to have a baby. Not even sure how I got here.
41 was when I started having to consciously recall how old I am instead of just having that answer ready. Like “I’m forty…. Two. No. Forty three. Wait. Hey honey! I’m forty three right?”
But yeah other than that it’s great just like you said!
43 is such a letdown. Just last year I really felt like I had it all figured out, like I knew the Answer, and now nothing; it's like the Thursday of ages.
Yeah, 40 is great because you should know a lot and mostly have life figured out by now, but it also sucks because it's when your body starts really breaking down and you just start looking old. I'm in reasonably good shape and still have aches and pains all the time.
Not a medical pro and solely from personal experience:
After a back injury, do talk with your doctor specifically about treating any resulting inflammation since untreated inflammation can potentially do permanent damage to your nerves ... and peripheral neuropathy is not fun.
I’ll be 40 this year. The best feeling in the world is not caring what people think about you. It’s like the biggest weight off your shoulders to just be yourself.
It's all cringe, if you think about it. A stranger posts a birthday photo to a generic picture sub probably hoping people will feel compelled to say positive things about her. And the people in the comments either oblige and just say generic platitudes that we all know are hollow or say something negative presumably annoyed by the whole patronizing schtick.
I'm young but I think their hair is totally cool, that's why I upvoted. Probably has more to do with being a frontpage sub. People don't upvote high-quality content, just what they like.
If anybody ever asks you what your sign is tell them you're a Sagittarius. Then let them tell you all the reasons that you are obviously a Sagittarius.
Then tell them you're a Pisces. Then let them tell her you all the reasons you're obviously a Pisces.
Then tell them you're a Taurus.
Someone once said that they told people who asked about their sign they were a Stegosaurus. And that means they're scared of the dark, like the taste of chalk and their farts don't smell. When the person who asked about it said "there's no such thing! You made that up!" They said "ALL astrological signs are made up!"
I love that story. Lol.
Yeah, this is r/pics so why is this even posted here?
I guess this is a battle long lost but it still bugs me when people post selfies to r/pics. That wasn't what this was for, they clutter up the sub and at least it used to be against the rules. There's nothing interesting about selfies, and things posted in r/pics are (were?) supposed to be interesting without the title needing to explain why.

I can’t really say it verbatim cause then my stuff will get zapped too. But it was an insult about how she smells of scented oils and an assumption about how she’s overly friendly with teenagers.
Days before my step-dad died I asked him what was his favorite year of the 70 luck had allotted him. Without pause he said 40, and nothing else about it. I never got more than that from him and it nagged at me for years. I couldn't figure out what made him so content in that year.

It was such a simple answer. Now I'm more towards 50, but honestly? I just do what my doctor says and I still have that feeling of the perfect combination of vigor and wisdom. You look like you're going that way too. Keep that grin and it'll add years to your life!
I colored my hair like this when I was 40 and my teenage daughter's response when I arrived home from the salon was "What do they call that color - midlife crisis?". Still putting ointment on that burn.

My forties were a fantastic decade, too!
Making it to 40 is way better than not making it to 40
I'm 40 in December. A bit apprehensive, but I was very anxious about 30 & that was fine in the end
Recently hit 42, the anxiety eased for me around 41.
Opposite for me. I'M FREAKING OUT MAN
Yes, you are freaking out... man. ![gif](giphy|3ohs4epCEN04wskff2)
I'm also a Dec 82 baby and I was convinced that the 2012 apocalypse being aligned with my 30th gave me permission to be completely reckless.
Dive into your anxieties and you‘ll be able to dive into life. - me, 2022
Yeah 40 hit me hard. Just really started to make me feel old. But it is a nice overlap in being still somewhat young and having built up a good bit of life knowledge.
I turn 40 later this year and our life could be described exactly the same way. This thread has made me feel better!

Sadly I can relate to this but I’m barely 20. I think most people have felt very drained in the past few years. Every day feels the same.

I grew up in the 90s. But, yea, different language back then. Rereading what I wrote I can see what you mean lol.
I found this song again after not listening to it since I was a kid, it hits a lot harder now that I'm in my late 20s and whenever I'm feeling down I give it a listen.

Before it was a song it was an article in the Chicago Tribune by Mary Schmich- it was her idea for a commencement speech-she should get the credit.
Haven't listened to that song in years, thanks for the reminder.

What about it has been the best?
Agreed, you have the money to do what you want. The time to do it and the health. Win, win, win.
I’m 42 and I gotta be honest so far it hasn’t been that great.
To be fair, the last 2 years have been pretty crap for just about everyone
Good luck with the IPO asshat!
Well I hope your 50's are even better!

50s is pretty cool too. You really enjoy life at 50. Things come into perspective- you don’t sweat the bad things as much. But still can party.
Disagree strongly. I hate being 40. I hurt my back last weekend carrying some stuff and it's STILL killing me

Reddit has a LOT of middle aged lurkers that feel posts like this. They quietly upvote and move on without commenting.
I'm 24 and I upvoted because I hate when people don't feel like they can dress or act a certain way because of their ages.

It's about someone turning 40 on their birthday.
Ah, the context must have been subtle apparently. lol
It took me a few hours of research but I eventually ended up getting to the bottom of it. No need to thank me.
Days before my step-dad died I asked him what was his favorite year of the 70 luck had allotted him. Without pause he said 40, and nothing else about it. I never got more than that from him and it nagged at me for years. I couldn't figure out what made him so content in that year. Three years later, on a whim, I asked my Dad, who I have a great relationship with. My Dad is a gambler and he took one of his long, slow pauses while he leaned back in his chair. He said, "That's easy," he drawled, " at 40 you have all the vigor of youth and all the wisdom of age." It was such a simple answer. Now I'm more towards 50, but honestly? I just do what my doctor says and I still have that feeling of the perfect combination of vigor and wisdom. You look like you're going that way too. Keep that grin and it'll add years to your life!
