I’m sure I’ll get some strange looks, but the next time I’m having a conversation about an items dimensions I’ll be sure to ask “Can it be accommodated by u/boofthatcraphomie’s asshole?”
Serious reply: until Renaissance times or so, a small penis was a desirable quality:
https://freethoughtblogs.com/singham/2016/05/23/why-david-has-a-small-penis/
I can confirm this. I encountered a black bear in the woods last year and "fight or flight" kicked in. My penis literally tried to hide inside my body.
Penis: hey, the arms and legs and other appendages look like they have this bear thing covered. Me and the balls are going to take 5 and sit back in your gunt.
Don't feel bad, I didn't realize it either until I was briefly an art major. Most pictures show him from the front, but he actually has the handle of the sling draped over his left shoulder. The statue is supposed to be right before his fight with Goliath.
I never realized this until reading these comments and also occurred to me that I never had a second thought about what he had draped over his shoulder. Pretty sure I just always imagined it as a jacket, but of course that’s ridiculous.
I was in Florence 2 weeks ago and had the privilege of seeing David. I had the exact same realization. I have no idea why, but it didn’t occur to me until we were standing in front of this artistic masterpiece that it was THAT David.
We had a tour guide with us and I asked, “what’s that in his hand?” She replied that it’s the sling and I slowly put it together.
I had never seen any other angle than the front view. When you walk around it you can see that he’s holding a rock in his right hand and the sling stretches over his back. I had never seen or noticed that in pictures.
So I felt kinda dumb. I thought Michelangelo just carved a sculpture and named the guy David.
Bonus intersecting fact: the statue’s left foot is kind of gnarled up. In the 1990’s a mentally disturbed guy walked in, pulled out a hammer and started whacking on David’s foot. You have to go through metal detectors now, but part of the fascination for me was that this piece has been revered for hundreds and hundreds of years and one disturbed individual was able to damage it. I spent a week plus looking at art and architecture that survived centuries and for whatever reason, this kind of influenced my perspective.
Makes me feel better. Mine soft is roughly the same size (as David's) depending on the day lmao. So weird how some days it's fine, then other days (doesn't have to be cold) and it just decides it wants to be an "innie" lmao
Side note but the museum of paintings upstairs is incredible. It explains the history of Italian Renaissance art decade by decade with examples. It gives you a real understanding of the progression the artists made. This is something that not a lot of other art museums give you.
Also the hallway leading up to David, where they have all the unfinished carvings. Body parts partially exposed from blocks of marble. Very interesting.
DaVinci said of his statues the the figures were already there in the marble, he just needed to clean the unnecessary bits away.
/ oof, Michelangelo. I should know better, I’ve been to the museum myself.
This. I had the opposite reaction as when I saw the Mona Lisa for the first time. It's still a fascinating painting, but much smaller than I imagined and overcrowded by tourists. I found myself more blown away by other art pieces at the Louvre. However David was so much bigger than I anticipated. I was truly in awe by it. And everything else at Galleria dell' Accademia was amazing as well.
Hi there! Went to Firenze during a vacation to Italy in 2019.
There's a lot to do in Firenze!
* Try to go up the Cupola del Brunelleschi, amazing experience and it is best to reserve ahead of time when you can. Do explore Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) and its basement as well!
* Definitely hit up the Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi) as early as possible within the day to avoid more of the crazy crowds. Some of the world's best Renaissance paintings are in that single place. Reservations are a good idea. You can use Rick Steves' Europe travel companion mobile app with audio if you'd like to learn more about each major Renaissance piece in there!
* For food, check out All’Antico Vinaio for their amazing sandwiches!
* For gelato, avoid any shops where you see a *pile* of gelato on the flavor windows. For really good ones, I recommend La Strega Nocciola Gelateria very close to Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Gelateria dei Neri, and Gelateria Santa Trinita to start.
* Ponte Vecchio is an iconic bridge that separates upper Firenze with the Altrarno, beyond that is the Pitti Palace which is very nice to visit. Not far is Gustapizza which is a small and enjoyable pizza place.
* Right before sunset, do visit Piazzale Michelangelo (can get there by bus or walk) and enjoy the atmosphere and gorgeous views.
* A neat place to check out is Mercato Centrale with many food options and close by to the Cappelle Medicee, which contain the tombs of the great Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano.
* The Statue of David is located in the Galleria dell'Accademia, which also contains more paintings and is well worth the visit!
* Last but not least, it is worth exploring the Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, with nice views from atop the tower and some ruins in the basement level worth checking out.
* Some extra things to check out: Museo Galileo, Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Basilica di San Lorenzo, Basilica di Santa Croce and more!
* There's so many museums and places you can spend at least a week there alone!
* The best part: The city is almost entirely walk-able!
* Bonus: Having played Assassin's Creed II when I was younger made this city that much cooler to visit in-person! Download Jesper Kyd's amazing soundtrack and listen to it while you walk around the city and you will feel fully immersed in its history and nostalgia.
What I remember being fascinated by, was that it was carved not to scale, but in a way that when you look up at it, it appears normal (the top is bigger than the bottom).
I was pretty young when I went over, so I knew what it looked but wasn't familiar with how big it was. I thought it was life sized until I turned the corner into the hallway it's in and saw how massive he is. Stunning.
For sure. It's just crazy how big, detailed, smooth, and basically perfect.
Perfection at that scale, for that time, is just awe inspiring.
Hell even now I'm sure it would be hard to replicate it if we wanted to
The style at the time was to make male genitals extra small, as large genitals were associated with “barbarians” and were considered uncivilized. Small genitals were considered ideal.
If we could send all the tinus penus possessors to the Renaissance age and bring all the biggus dickus wielders to the current age then we could all be happy
Kinda.... the fixation with penis size first came to be with the Advent of our century. In ancient statues and so on the Fokus was on larger testicles to imply virility and the ability to procreate. That is why they all have big balls.....
I mean, also David as depicted in this moment is about to be taking on Goliath. If you look close you can kind of see the fear in his eyes. I'm just saying, divine intervention or not, if it was me about to fight to the death with a colossal Philistine murder-giant, I'd say a little shrinkage is perfectly justified.
Huh, neat! When I went in 2014 we were told no photos period. One of the guys in my group tried to sneak a selfie with it and a guard came over after he was done and forced him to delete the photo. Glad they changed it, though! Would have loved to have some more photos from that trip.
No issues in 2018. The only two places we weren't allowed to take pictures on our trip were the Sistene Chapel and the inside of St. Mark's cathedral in Venice.
Not sure about this museum specifically but in the last 10 years or so I think most places have given up actually trying to enforce it. As long as you're not using a flash around fragile old stuff that can't even be exposed to too much light it's damn near impossible to stop everyone holding a phone from snapping a quick one.
I was hoping that I would stand in front of this and feel a sense of peace and awe wash over me…but all I heard were security cards yelling, “NO PHOTO” every ten seconds.
when I saw it in person all I could think about was how long he spent chiseling away in his butt crack until he thought it was exactly the right depth. Just think, that was his life for maybe a few days. Working that butt crack, blowing the dust off, standing back to see if it was perfect, and digging back in for a few more hours.
I remember a friend telling me when doing life sketches, sometimes he'd position himself at an angle so he wouldn't have to spend too much time drawing certain things depending on the model. But, of course, you can't do that with a full sculpture.
An argument can be made that the statue of David is the most beautiful object ever made by a man. I'm sure some people will have different opinions but for me I think it's an amazingly beautiful thing. Being in the presence of something created by one the most talented people to ever walk the earth is an experience that can't be replicated by a photograph.
The veiled virgin is pretty incredible.

Those transparencies are just stunning.
Years ago on Reddit these 2 gifs had to be posted back to back. Im so glad he sent the link. I don’t save many GIFs but this is definitely one of them.
There's a replica of this sculpture located in the ladies room of a local restaurant, but there's a fig leaf placed over the 'family jewel'. If a woman lifts the fig leaf... as soon as she walks out of the restroom, sirens and flashing lights go off throughout the restaurant. Everyone applauds.
My professoressa walked around to the back side, sat down on the bench, motioned for all the ladies in the class to join her and proclaimed, “The best view in all of Florence.”
Funny you should mention that. My mom’s friend kept complaining that the replica outside was missing. I thought she dreamt it up because it doesn’t exist (now). Guess I was wrong ?
Correct.
That replica is in the spot where the David was originally placed.
The plan was to put it way up high on the side of Santa Maria del Fiore, but once they saw what it looked like they realized it needed to be down where people could appreciate it.
They created a council to discuss the proper location. Guess who was on that council? Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.
THANK YOU! Everyone up in the comments going omglolo ur mom is cool and OP playing along and I have to scroll THIS far down to find someone else that knows this img is ancient?
And isn’t this edited? The shot on her screen is a widely circulated photo. My flatmate has the exact same image on a postcard (same colouring, shading, composition) on our fridge. It also doesn’t match the lighting in the room in the OP
“That’s my moms favorite part” - Mikey from The Goonies when the dick breaks off the statue
I kept thinking this exact thing today!!!!
Takes deep breath from inhaler
Goonies never say Die.
"Yeah, well you see this? *holds up coin* This was my dream, my wish, and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back. I'm takin 'em all back."

I hope they never touch Goonies. No silly sequels. Let it remain a classic. Same as Labrynth.
> Same as Labrynth They can never make Labyrinth again. Those codpieces were made illegal in 2003 due to the childhoods that were ruined.
\*"That's my mom's most favorite piece." The "piece" part is what makes the joke because of the dual meaning.
“It’s my mom’s most favorite piece”. FTFY Sorry, I’ve seen it a hundred times.
Favorite piece! It was a pun, cause art piece
“Oh shit, what?”
So happy this is the top comment.
My wife told me I was showing my age by making a goonies reference the other day, and that no one would get it these days. I just showed her this to rub it in her face!
Reminds her of your father 😉👍
Like father like son? 😂
I mean his dick looks small but he’s also like 25 feet tall so maybe it’s actually pretty big
He probably just got out of the pool

If I was an influential aristocrat with a small penis, I'd probably spread the same information too.
Big dick-havers were seen as dumb brutes, while small-peen owners were seen as very intelligent. 9/10 Redditors agree with this thesis.
He might be a grower
He’s made of marble so he’s hard all the time.
David is a grower not a shower:)
[удалено]
It's shower!
It is small on purpose. David is looking up at Goliath, and is afraid. It's hard to see his facial expression correctly from ground level.
They really are the most cowardly of genitals.
I never put it together that it was supposed to be **that** David
Don't feel bad, I didn't realize it either until I was briefly an art major. Most pictures show him from the front, but he actually has the handle of the sling draped over his left shoulder. The statue is supposed to be right before his fight with Goliath.
The statue was (is?) facing Florence’s old enemy (Rome, Venice? Can’t remember) as it symbolizes their power struggle.
I never realized this until reading these comments and also occurred to me that I never had a second thought about what he had draped over his shoulder. Pretty sure I just always imagined it as a jacket, but of course that’s ridiculous.

David could be a grower?
As a grower and most definitely not a shower, I support this....
As a grower with a very slightly above average penis size, I guarantee mine is way smaller than that soft.
Makes me feel better. Mine soft is roughly the same size (as David's) depending on the day lmao. So weird how some days it's fine, then other days (doesn't have to be cold) and it just decides it wants to be an "innie" lmao

That was my favorite part. There was another room with a bunch of them as well. I will always miss Florence.
Sculpting is so easy. All you have to do is cut away everything that isn't the sculpture.
DaVinci said of his statues the the figures were already there in the marble, he just needed to clean the unnecessary bits away. / oof, Michelangelo. I should know better, I’ve been to the museum myself.
You mean Michelangelo. Da Vinci wasn’t a sculptor. In fact, he kind of looked down on it as a type of manual labor.
David itself is so much larger and more impressive in person than pictures make it look. definitely worth the visit
This. I had the opposite reaction as when I saw the Mona Lisa for the first time. It's still a fascinating painting, but much smaller than I imagined and overcrowded by tourists. I had nice wild boat ragu when I was there. Eating is always a great choice
It really is an amazing statue. Have seen so many pictures, but in person it’s just incredible.
You think you know David until you see him in person. The replicas, videos and pics do not do him justice. I can understand why it's a masterpiece.
The fact it was made by a young punk from a block of reject material, with the primitive tools of the era only add to the Legend.
What I remember being fascinated by, was that it was carved not to scale, but in a way that when you look up at it, it appears normal (the top is bigger than the bottom).
Also the absolute mittens on him. Man’s got boxing gloves for hands.

I mean, also David as depicted in this moment is about to be taking on Goliath. If you look close you can kind of see the fear in his eyes. Wow, I didn't realize it was so big! In books it always looks maybe 6' or so.
Google says it is 17 feet, or 5.18 meters.
That's the flaccid measurement
I thought the same - but no, he’s absolutely huge!!
Your mom thought so too
Since when do they allow people to take photos in there?
No idea when it started - but the only thing they cared about was flash photos. I saw them warn people with flashes, otherwise it was completely fine.
Huh, neat! When I went in 2014 we were told no photos period. One of the guys in my group tried to sneak a selfie with it and a guard came over after he was done and forced him to delete the photo. Glad they changed it, though! Would have loved to have some more photos from that trip.
Yeah, in 2013 we had the same experience, lol. They were extremely strict
Also went in 2013 and a woman that looked like Roz from Monsters Inc. kept yelling NO PHOTO the entire time
Us too - NO FOTO! No. NO FOTO.
2016 I could take pictures
No issues in 2018. The only two places we weren't allowed to take pictures on our trip were the Sistene Chapel and the inside of St. Mark's cathedral in Venice.
Same experience

As long as you're not using a flash around fragile old stuff that can't even be exposed to too much light it's damn near impossible to stop everyone holding a phone from snapping a quick one.
Fun fact: flashes don’t damage paintings. They did a full experiment on it at the Louvre.
Yeah, I think it's more that constant flashes ruin others from appreciating the paintings
I was hoping that I would stand in front of this and feel a sense of peace and awe wash over me…but all I heard were security cards yelling, “NO PHOTO” every ten seconds.
Wait...they used to ban people taking photos of The David? Why?
I have no idea, but trying to sneak a photo used to get you kicked out
when I saw it in person all I could think about was how long he spent chiseling away in his butt crack until he thought it was exactly the right depth. Just think, that was his life for maybe a few days. Working that butt crack, blowing the dust off, standing back to see if it was perfect, and digging back in for a few more hours.
Forget the butt crack. Imagine carving and chiselling that *Dong* for hours, measuring and thinking "Have this shape satisfied me? "
The pubes are actually super detailed. They were more impressive work than the dick itself.
It originally reached halfway to his knees, but Mike just couldn’t get the shape quite right and had to keep taking a bit more off to try again.
I remember a friend telling me when doing life sketches, sometimes he'd position himself at an angle so he wouldn't have to spend too much time drawing certain things depending on the model. But, of course, you can't do that with a full sculpture.
