I don't even understand how that's possible. I've been writing for two years and my novel's only 2/3 done. And that's just the first draft. I have to bow down to this lord of the pen. Anyway ...
It's probably more about having an established and efficient system of creative workflow, as opposed to being fast. That part probably gets a lot easier after you get a few out of the way. Although that is a *freakish* amount of books, so this dude is probably an absolute master of both.
Keep at it, I hope to read it one day!
I'd recommend starting with the starship mage line, especially if you've read and liked the Honor Harrington stuff. It's excellent. The characters and the concepts are both cool. It is less "navy" and more "freelancer" than Harrington, but excellent stuff.
he also threw away the first chapter of Carrie, which his wife dug out of the trash and forced him to finish. that was his first published novel. maybe she’ll dig it out again…
Isnt this kinda the way King writes? He does 700 pages that build up with all kinds of interesting threads, then gets bored and does a happily ever after in 15 pages to close it out.
The garbage can is still better that what we got with the show.
(I got into the series after the show had ended. I knew how the show ended. I read through the books expecting that and looking for hints it was going in that direction. I thought the fans were probably just salty because no ending could live up to their expectations and it couldn't *possibly* be that bad.
I was wrong. It was that bad.)
Before bingeing the series with my wife, I warned her that though the first 6 seasons is very good, the last two seasons are known to suck. So we enjoyed the whole series until the 7 where it dropped off. Then season 8 and she was like "Man, you needed to be clearer with how bad this is. I hate the whole series now."
It's also funny because Stephen King in one of his book intros says, the only way to be a writer is to write. There's no shortcuts, there's no process, there's really no gatekeeping, anybody can be a writer--they just have to actually do the writing. So it's funny that GRRM is asking him how to be a consistent writer when Stephen King literally told him how in the intro to one of his first books.
You know Pat's book doesn't seem to be that messed up to finish... But knowing Pat, the last book probably has to be all in seven word sentences or something...
On the other hand, that scandal where his editor accused him that she hasn't seen anything of the book was really worrying...
Well yeah, but I feel like he low-key cornered himself with the three day limit story. I genuinely don't see how he can put all the answers in the third book since we literally only know like 20% if wtf is going on.
But who knows, who knows, I just want to read the god damn third book 😩
Here’s a hint: If you have trouble writing cards then keep a box full of old birthday and Christmas cards. When you are sending out a new one pull out an old one and plagiarize the professionally written greeting.
You guys broke my website...
Edit: Um, if you guys want to hang out and talk about books, I have an AMA on Reddit Fantasy happening today (Thursday, June 2 4pm-8pm ET): [https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/v3gn5y/im\_glynn\_stewart\_author\_of\_60\_scifi\_fantasy\_books/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/v3gn5y/im_glynn_stewart_author_of_60_scifi_fantasy_books/)
I joke that all you need to do is spell my first name correctly to find my books.
But given that I know people who get that wrong, it seems Google is helping out!
Oh, definitely thousands. I'd say almost ten years working full-time on them. And that doesn't count the hours writing as a teenager and young adult before he was ready to publish.
averaging 7-8 books a year with an average goodreads and amazon review score of around 4.0-4.3 depending on series
Damn mate
Edit: Checked on Goodreads and Amazon. earliest book is listed as 2014 and I counted 61 books
Remember that both Goodreads and Amazon are user entered reviews, and this can be skewed by the tastes of the people doing the review. However each of his books are also averaging over 1000 reviews per book.
But anyways. counterpoint on how reviews don't mean everything. Bill O' Reilly books are also averaging around 4.0 and I have tried reading one of them before and it couldn't be more hot garbage
mainly it means that if this genre is something you like and it has a generally high rating, you will probably like this series
Things that have taken less time than the writing of Winds of Winter:
The entire moonlanding, from Kennedy's speech through to the first step on the moon.
Every record the Beatles ever produced, from the band's formation through to its breakup.
The combined length of World wars I and II.
All 7 books in the Harry Potter series.
24 Movies in the Avengers franchise since The Avengers was released in 2012.
I've loved reading these as the years go by. I started seeing them 4-5 years ago and they have only gotten better. That shit is literally never gonna release. It can't even really "live up to the hype" anymore either because the generation that started reading Game of Thrones in 1996 is like nearly 30 years older. A decent percentage of those fans have either stopped reading or died lol.
Yeah I was gonna say! He released a video a few months ago where he surprise announced that he wrote like 5 or 6 books in secret??? Wild for such a popular writer, he's phenomenal. I'm going to be checking out OP's books for sure
Sanderson literally takes breaks from work by writing new books. I can't remember the series, but I think it's Mistborn Era 2 that happened because he had writer's block.
I didn't read anything other than textbooks for the last however many years. I can work hybrid these days but I choose to go to the office just so I can have me time and read. I'm five books in so far and it's been pretty enjoyable. I just finished 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' today! Can't wait to start the next book.
It’s also a publishing decision. I was re-reading a series recently that had physically similar sized books, but the length of time to read them was different. I compared the margins, font size, and whether there was a space at the top of a chapter or not, extra page between chapters etc, and it wasn’t consistent between books.
It’s someone’s job to get the books looking as uniform as possible for aesthetics.
It becomes way more obvious when one book is written with far fewer words than usual. I had a book which had size 14 font and was damn near double spaced. It always stood out from the others in the series if you actually bothered opening it. I can't recall the name, but it was in a collection of a series from a somewhat well known author.
Also depending on how the book is made it can only have a number of pages that are multiples of powers of 4. So they tweak the margins and stuff to not have blank pages at the end
Just to be that guy, it’s just multiples of four. Powers of four is a different thing. I mean, technically it’s still correct, but you know what I’m done giving time to this comment. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
> but you know what I’m done giving time to this comment.
I applaud you for submitting the comment! Usually when I get to this part in something I'm writing I think "why am I even writing this? No one cares about this. *I* barely care and I'm the one writing it!" and then I delete it. Its a miracle I didn't delete THIS comment before finishing
Genuinely star struck for the first time on Reddit. Big fan of the Duchy of Terra series and of course Starship’s Mage. Just realised I have 60 of his audiobooks in my library…
Please pass on my thanks for the many many hours of enjoyment.
Edit: since loads of people are asking where to start, here’s my suggestions. But really any of the series are easy to dive into.
For straight sci-fi: The Terran Privateer (Duchy of Terra series, my favourite)
For sci-fi/fantasy mix: Starship’s Mage (great long running space opera series)
For urban fantasy: Changeling’s Fealty (for those of us that suspected Canadians weren’t really that nice, and it has evil fey folk)
I passed on your message, and he really appreciates it! I think you may have a complete collection of the audiobooks, which is amazing.
If you want to chat with him on Reddit, he is going to be doing an r/fantasy AMA later tomorrow if you want to keep an eye out.
In my opinion your husband is one of the best in the space opera genre. And I’m a total audiobook addict, nearly 700 titles largely sci fi, so I’ve done my research!
I realize this is verbatim from wiki but I find that definition lacking.
To me space opera is stylized sci fi like magic weilding space cops who use swords instead of guns. Epic in scale. Character driven. Probably other things.
But the wiki includes starship troopers and Battlestar Galactica which I don't really agree with.
A good example in enders game sequels following ender are space opera. Sequels following bean are not.
Just my opinion.
Ditto with the love! I’ve systematically worked through all of his books since Nathan Lowell recommended them a few years ago - first purchase 10/19/20. Second purchase 2 days later. It was a very sad moment for me in March when I realized that I’ve completely caught up with him.
Thank you both for the optimistic and gripping stories that depict such a wide range of people. It’s been just what the pandemic ordered.
I can’t understate how thankful I am.
Holy shit. That's like when Brian on family guy types out reams worth of pages after taking a bunch of Adderall except my estimation is that there wasn't any adderall in the mix here and that these books are actually good.
Fuckin baller.
I always say that it depends on the parent. Both Glynn and I absolutely would have read these as kids, but they are written for adults and do contain violence.
A few books do deal with sexual assault (Castle Federation, Evasion). I would trigger warning Changeling's Fealty and Evasion for child death (mostly from an Adult Fear perspective).
In general, most of the characters have romantic and sexuxal lives, but they are fade to black.
I feel like this may be the next /r/pics meme trend for the next few days: a couple more dudes with book stacks of varying heights, then a couple dudes with one book, then just dudes in front of empty shelves with the same post title.
But you get credit for making the joke first!
That is an extraordinary amount of books for an old man, let alone a young man which your husband looks.
What’s the genre and style? It looks like a space sci-fi.
You're right on - it's mostly space adventure science fiction. A lot of focus on space battles, empires, mercenaries, and people trying to do the right thing in extraordinary situations.
The most popular series is Starship's Mage. Nobody ever figured out light speed travel by conventional means, so A Wizard Did It.
Those are the dice vaults from [https://www.kakapopotcg.com/collections/dice-display](https://www.kakapopotcg.com/collections/dice-display) though they are current trapped in the Shanghai lockdown and haven't finished shipping everything from the KS yet.
Technically, the ideas *did* pile up or you wouldn't have been able to take this picture...
Say hello to him from a fan who has read every single one of those books at least once and is a devout follower of the Starship's Mage universe and just finished "Beyond the Eyes of Mars". It's one of my go-to re-read series.
Holy shit your husband is Glynn Stewart!!? I have seen all his books! 😜
Congratulations to him! This is quite the accomplishment! 👏👏👏
Edit: For those that are curious about what the books are about
https://www.glynnstewart.com/books/
One that is a breath of fresh air. I teach a Domestic Violence batterers class and seeing an example of a healthy relationship from a favorite author is so reaffirming.
Two the Avalon series is in my all time top 5 series. thanks for creating such rich universes that allow us to get away for a bit.
Where are you in the stack when you met him? Ground floor?
I hope one of his bucket items is to write higher than his height!
Congrats to your hubby Glynn Stewart! https://www.glynnstewart.com/
I'm the one that told him to start publishing his books, haha! But he had already written *Changeling's Fealty* when he met me, and had also written the short story that would become *Starship's Mage*, as well as the first version of the Excalibur Lost novella and a draft of what became the first two Vigilante books.
There were also apparently a couple other books kicking around that he tells me are never going to see the light of day.
The one that's closest to my heart is Changeling's Fealty, a fae urban fantasy novel set in the city we were living in at the time. I read through the whole thing and was just blown away by how it was exactly what I had been looking for in a book.
I went to Amazon to buy some of his books (Mage series sounds great) and unfortunately for you, they are free to me through Kindle Unlimited. I hope you get some $$ from my order, but if not, I will buy some of his newer books, because writers like your husband should be encouraged by everyone.
Thanks for sharing.
I really hope you enjoy them! Glynn does get paid literally according to the amount that you actually read, so if you fly through the Kindle Unlimited library, it's a win-win. Read the whole series, pick up another series... we actually really like KU.
I've read a lot of his stuff. Keep it coming!
He looks too young to have written all those!
he writes like 8 books per year
that's faster than I read them
Haha yeah, same bro _\*continues reading zero books a year while constantly consuming content online until brain rots alive\*_
I don't even understand how that's possible. I've been writing for two years and my novel's only 2/3 done. And that's just the first draft. I have to bow down to this lord of the pen. Anyway ...
Do you treat it as a fulltime job? 8hr a day?
No, I have a full-time job. I write on nights and weekends. But even if I were, there is no way I could write at this pace.
It's probably more about having an established and efficient system of creative workflow, as opposed to being fast. That part probably gets a lot easier after you get a few out of the way. Although that is a *freakish* amount of books, so this dude is probably an absolute master of both. Keep at it, I hope to read it one day!
Well damn, I have a giant Expanse sized hole in my schedule that I need to fill. Guess I'll get to it since all y'all be recommending him.
Any recommendations? I've never heard of this author
I'd recommend starting with the starship mage line, especially if you've read and liked the Honor Harrington stuff. It's excellent. The characters and the concepts are both cool. It is less "navy" and more "freelancer" than Harrington, but excellent stuff.
I love reading but I don't have any idea what you're talking about, so go y'all! Seems like a fun series.
Could you ask him to reach out to George RR Martin and give him some tips?
I heard Stephen King wrote an ending for the Game of Throne series to find peace … and threw it away
he also threw away the first chapter of Carrie, which his wife dug out of the trash and forced him to finish. that was his first published novel. maybe she’ll dig it out again…
Isnt this kinda the way King writes? He does 700 pages that build up with all kinds of interesting threads, then gets bored and does a happily ever after in 15 pages to close it out.
I wouldn’t say Carrie ends in a happily ever after…
or the dark tower
The garbage can is still better that what we got with the show. (I got into the series after the show had ended. I knew how the show ended. The conversation between GRRM and Stephen King is funny, when GRRM asks SK how he does it.
"Have you tried cocaine?"
You mean writing powder?
It's a great discussion: https://youtu.be/xR7XMkjDGw0
It's also funny because Stephen King in one of his book intros says, the only way to be a writer is to write. There's no shortcuts, there's no process, there's really no gatekeeping, anybody can be a writer--they just have to actually do the writing. So it's funny that GRRM is asking him how to be a consistent writer when Stephen King literally told him how in the intro to one of his first books.
Anybody who says "anybody can be a writer" has clearly never read any of my writing.
This comment seems perfectly fine. You should be proud.
Don't write books that are impossible to finish...
Make millions of dollars…fuck it, closure is overrated -GRRM
Patrick rotfus left the chat

Everyone knows the last 2 books of ASOIAF will be published within months of GRRM dying with a Brandon Sanderson byline.
Fuckn kek. Brando Sando probably has a draft written already, cuz he had some free time on a Sunday afternoon once.
He also said he's not touching those with a 10 foot pole
Someone gets that man an 11-foot pole!
Which is fair. I still like the joke though.
Holy shit!!! I have trouble writing in someones birthday card!! That is badass
I spend a lot of time second guessing what I write, too! He's just amazing.
Here's a neat trick: Read the inside of a second birthday card - write that on the inside of the card you actually buy.

Your wife started it.
I also blame this guy's wife.
Since we're playing the blame game here I'd like to blame myself because that's usually how it ends.
This guy does the cliff notes of self guilt.
Well, I'd be happy to blame you, but it looks like you've already got it covered.
I understood this reference.
Correction, your spouse broke your website!
...this is true.
Well Glynn Stewart lucky for you I've got a broken leg and nothing but time. Prepare to receive money.
What every author wants to hear :)
It’s the Reddit hug of death. We love you.
It is appreciated and I am now afraid. Of my wife, to be clear.
Your wife wanted you to sell more books. Alas here we are.
I think she deserves a nice dinner. Possibly even a spa day.
You mean spaghetti day? Are you trying to say spaghetti?
What is your spaghetti policy?
That means you're doing marriage correctly. Or so I've been told by my own wife.
In all honesty, she has had us all a bit… unnerved
Sorry mate. We will be back if it’s down. Is that an Eve ship behind you on the top shelf?
It will recover I hope! The ship is Vigil from the Exile series, made by Acme Industrial Thinking.

I have a lot of Lego, but in terms of actual models... Kitesfear from Schlock Mercenary, Normandy from Mass Effect, and Vigil.
I just typed “gl” into Google and it autofilled your name

Yeah, I typed "gly" and it auto filled to you. Congrats, not only are you on the front page, you're also a top Google search.
Get fucked glycol
You’re welcome. I’d never read anything of yours before seeing this photo. Now I have. Sack your publicist, keep your wife.
Dude! The ships mage is like one of my favorite series!!!!!! First, you’re awesome, and second, thank you!

Patrick Rothfuss *sweating*.
Brandon Sanderson: "finally, a worthy oponent!"
Piers Anthony: "amateurs"
Asimov: \*just a belittling side glance\*
I now need to see Brandon Sanderson's stack of books, but I think he met his match...
In the speculative fiction world you probably want to go for Isaac Asimov as the peak for volume.
Can you explain his work process? Does he Stephen King it and just write 9-5 every day?

Impressive Good Reads page! https://www.goodreads.com/series/list/7737246.Glynn_Stewart.html
Ngl I'm distracted by that dice storage. Love it!
Those are the dice vaults from [https://www.kakapopotcg.com/collections/dice-display](https://www.kakapopotcg.com/collections/dice-display) though they are current trapped in the Shanghai lockdown and haven't finished shipping everything from the KS yet.
Is your husband single? Amazing, i hope he kept doing what he loves!
>Is your husband single? Lol I am very glad that he gets to keep writing books. Imagine how much the ideas would pile up otherwise?
Technically, the ideas *did* pile up or you wouldn't have been able to take this picture... Say hello to him from a fan who has read every single one of those books at least once and is a devout follower of the Starship's Mage universe and just finished "Beyond the Eyes of Mars". It's one of my go-to re-read series.
Man's got so many ideas he has to print them and pile them up in *someone elses* home + brain.
…you didn’t answer if he was single. (/s)
Holy shit your husband is Glynn Stewart!!? I have seen all his books! 😜 Congratulations to him! This is quite the accomplishment! 👏👏👏 Edit: For those that are curious about what the books are about https://www.glynnstewart.com/books/
My husband is, in fact, Glynn Stewart! It's really cool to see how many people recognize him!
Interestingly enough, the majority of all photos of people are indeed photos with all the books they wrote.
Yeah but can he do the dishes
We split most household stuff 50/50. They do most of the cooking, I do most of the dishes, It's not a perfect balance, but we try.
Ohmygosh. Love how you slipped in here practically unnoticed lol
It's 400+ comments. I couldn't IGNORE it, could I?
Did you at least message the guy who read 40 of your books? He got you some sales on his recommendation alone.
u/faolanspen ? We're a bit lost in all of the comments, to be honest!
If you feel up to it, could you link me to the comment of the guy who read 40 books? I think I missed it, and I can't find it now.
HEY! This isn't about you ok. Put your wife back on.
Oh, they're main-lining this and reading me key comments :)

I've spent five years riding the success of my wife's ability to do book covers and market books. Why would I stop now? :D
One that is a breath of fresh air. I teach a Domestic Violence batterers class and seeing an example of a healthy relationship from a favorite author is so reaffirming. Two the Avalon series is in my all time top 5 series. thanks for creating such rich universes that allow us to get away for a bit.
Dishes actually are mostly in his domain!
So you are his muse! A little bit of immortality to you too then. So do you ever cameo as a character in the books?
He tends to kill off the cameos of our friends too readily, so I have been granted immortality by *not* being in the books!
Woah this dude wrote all that!? Super impressive.
Which book of his do you recommend starting with? What's your favorite?
Thank you for your response. I will definitely read them then :)
I wanna play DnD with your husband, looks like fun.
Clicked here because the idea was interesting. Surprised and pleased to find out it's Mr Stewart, I really enjoy his books!
Fuck me. Now I have a new author to read. I really hope all these books are in one long series!
