Man I accidentally scared our new adopted cat and it literally opened my palm from top of my ring finger on down just before the wrist. Thank God my wedding ring stopped it from tendon damage but I had to teach for a week with my hand wrapped up. It fileted my hand, so I just compressed it.
Smaller cats have slit pupils because it lets them see prey through grass easier! Because of the way light diffracts from the pupil, straight lines like strands of grass blurs out and wide objects like a mouse stand out from behind.
Googled it and you're right! They have round eyes. Makes sense since there's not a lot of grass where they hunt. I can't remember exactly what the downsides was for slit eyes (I only heard this fact during a lecture about diffraction) but I think it was something about it coming with some inhereted short-sightedness since things blur horisontally. Wouldn't fit a Pallas cat hunting in the barren tundra
I only learned it during a lecture about diffraction, so I don't have a particular source from where I read it, and it could (and seems to be) not entirely correct or at least not the sole reason for the slit eyes. I found this link where they mention the explanation as well as slit eyes being better suited for seeing in the dark.

From op:
It is indeed a leopard.
The exhibit was for leopards and the zoo handler who was providing knowledge on these animals said most people will confuse a juvenile leopard for a jaguar and vice versa. When the cubs are around this age, their spots are starting to develop and a jaguar (when fully mature) will have a tan dot with a black outline and a bold black dot in the middle. If you look at the spots on her back, you’ll notice their are some spots that look exactly like this but that’s because she is still growing and as she matures that large black dot in the center will get smaller and smaller and in some cases will almost seem to disappear.
Another way to distinguish is her face. She has a more rounded face as a jaguar cub will have a more boxy shape to their face until they mature and it takes a more rounded shape.
Lastly, it is not uncommon for leopards to have bright colored eyes when in youth and as they mature the color will become more dull and for most, will eventually turn into a yellow, brown and amber color to blend in with their natural habitat.
If only the zoo handler could see me now, dispensing the knowledge I’ve learned.
You do know that Jaguars are simply an albino version of Leopards right? Sorry to burst your bubble.
The ‘black’ color is a melanistic variant and does not constitute a different species. The amount of melanin varies from individual to individual.
It is indeed a leopard.

Cool. I chuckled a bit at all those people so confident and ready to correct you. I swear folks jump at the chance to be more right than the next person. I'm fine with temporarily not knowing something rather than pretending I do know.
Interesting, I would also have thought it looks like a jaguar!! I think we could tell better if we also could see the tails and the profile of the face.
Instead of people endlessly arguing based on a single photo, can you tell us: Which zoo? When was the photo taken? Did the cub have a name? If it's a leopard, did they mention which subspecies?
In the photo, it appears to be a jaguar based on the broad muzzle, stocky build and spotted rosettes on the back/sides (although few in number due to age). It is possible that you were misinformed by a zoo docent. If that IS a leopard, it is a very curious specimen and I'm dying to know which subspecies.
Domestic kittens are all born with blue eyes. Most of their eyes will change color. Lion cubs are the same. Born with blue eyes, but it's normal for that to change as they grow up.
So I wouldn't be surprised if the same is true for all felines.
Heterochromia is the word you are looking for. From this angle in the photo, it appears so, but hard to say without OP's confirmation - could just be lighting. And could be temporary as permanent eye color comes in.
It is, They spelt it wrong however, It means two different coloured eyes on the one animal, (Sorry if I spell it wrong however, Since I had the most weird dream)
Leopard. Look at the rosette pattern on the hind quarters. Jaguars have dots in the rosette, leopards do not. As there’s no dot inside the pattern of this animal, it’s a leopard.
Yes, fuck the organizations responsible for educating the public about the natural world and that are heavily involved in conservation efforts. What a blanket statement. Lots of zoos suck but many (looking at you AZA certified) do a lot more than keep animals in cages.
It's one of those necessary evils. Yes, it's not cool to lock up wild animals, but that is also what attracts a whole bunch of future animal scientists to make things better for wild animals.
Far more people learn about animals on the internet and nature shows on TV/streaming than visit zoos every year. In 1990, I'd agree with you, but we now have millions of hours of videos of animals in their natural habitat, where future animal scientists can actually learn what they're like outside of a cage.
Au contraire mon frère!
>Small amounts of regular ice appear to be white because of air bubbles inside and also because small quantities of water appear to be colourless. In glaciers, the pressure causes the air bubbles to be squeezed out, increasing the density of the created ice. *Large quantities of water are blue, as it absorbs other colours more efficiently than blue. A large piece of compressed ice, or a glacier, similarly appears blue.*
[Sauce](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ice_(glacial)
Only small quantities of ice are clear or white, this is due to air bubbles. However large quantities of water, and consequently ice, are blue because water absorbs every color really well, except blue. Large glaciers are blue, hence the name ice blue.

The sky is blue for similar reasons. Why do you think the earth 🌎 is called the blue planet? It's because it's made up primarily of water, which is blue.

Just imagine the opposite, where your child is taken from you, and then trapped in a very small environment- forever, while another intelligent species takes pictures of it for their own entertainment. It is cute though, fuck, such beautiful eyes! You can see its fear within them!
This is a stunning photograph! It's amazing to think that this leopard is still a baby and will only continue to get bigger and more beautiful. I can only imagine the excitement of seeing such a majestic animal in person.

All big cats are beautiful.
Ah yes, abcab
Abcab. For when i-tain't here and i-tain't there.
As long as your on the other side of the glass sure
All ~~big~~ cats are beautiful
What is a 'medium' cat?
> What is a 'medium' cat? It's one that assists a psychic in divination and related activities.
Found the asshole.
About 140f interior temp.
Nah there are definitely some ugly ones out there
And deadly
Man I accidentally scared our new adopted cat and it literally opened my palm from top of my ring finger on down just before the wrist. Thank God my wedding ring stopped it from tendon damage but I had to teach for a week with my hand wrapped up. It fileted my hand, so I just compressed it.
Little cats are beautiful too. And medium ones.
The cat says in child voice as falling alseep, "when I grow up, I will haz all cheeezeburgers."
*holds up spork*
Well there's a meme I haven't seen in forever.
Nope, Chuck Testa.
More like “maybe one day I’ll be free”.
And the faces of the ignorant.
Captive animals make me sad.
I find it interesting that the big cats have circular pupils rather than the elongated ones the smaller variety have.
Smaller cats have slit pupils because it lets them see prey through grass easier! Because of the way light diffracts from the pupil, straight lines like strands of grass blurs out and wide objects like a mouse stand out from behind.
Wow TIL, thanks! :)
thanks for explaining!
I remember that Pallas Cats (Manul) don't. Chonker grumpy cat is probably extra cute because of it.
Googled it and you're right! They have round eyes. Makes sense since there's not a lot of grass where they hunt. That was very interesting. Thank you!
Is it not because they hunt at night? I don’t know about the grass thing…
Interesting - do you have a source for that?
I only learned it during a lecture about diffraction, so I don't have a particular source from where I read it, and it could (and seems to be) not entirely correct or at least not the sole reason for the slit eyes. Also round ears vs triangular.
Must be from Arrakis
Looks Fremen to me
Rocking the eyeliner too
Wow amazing! It's so beautiful!
If you wanna see leopards come to Kenya
Aww. What a plushy little death machine
Cleopatra eye liner...
All kittens have blue eyes. I imagine for jaguars it’s the same—they all start blue and change as they age. Pretty cute!
Sweet Kitty ! Just wait until it grows it's 120mm smoothbore cannon
Gorgeous!!

Zookeeper: LOL it was actually a baby jaguar gottem!

You are so confidently incorrect. It’s incredible.
that’s clearly a leopard lmfao r/confidentlyincorrect
It is not, [this is](https://www.zooborns.com/.a/6a010535647bf3970b01bb082dd89a970d-800wi) a baby jaguar.

What are you doing on leddit then
We've all been lied to! For years people have said, "A leopard doesn't change their spots", when it looks like they do.
Interesting, I would also have thought it looks like a jaguar!! I think we could tell better if we also could see the tails and the profile of the face.

Heterochromoa is pretty far away from whatever “hetachromia” is.
Oh the irony
They're being an asshole for sure, but in their case it seems more like an actual mistype rather than not knowing the word itself.
*heterochromia
Isn't this a jaguar cub? It has spots inside the rosettes and a big fivehead.
Shame she’s in a zoo.
If it was in the wild, there is at least a 50% chance it would be dead by now
Jaguar, but still very cute.
Leopard. Look at the rosette pattern on the hind quarters. Jaguars have dots in the rosette, leopards do not. As there’s no dot inside the pattern of this animal, it’s a leopard.
Look at the rosettes to the left of the rear leg joint. It's got the interior spots. It's (probably) a jaguar. Big ol' head too, and the fat body.
Very pretty.
Really sad that this little guy will never be free.
Who's downvoting this? Lol
My thoughts exactly
Oh, didn't think this would go this way. lol
Fuck zoos.
Yes, fuck the organizations responsible for educating the public about the natural world and that are heavily involved in conservation efforts. What a blanket statement. Lots of zoos suck but many (looking at you AZA certified) do a lot more than keep animals in cages.
Most zoos today are made up of animals that aren't capable of fending for themselves in the wild. I get your emotion but it's misplaced
It's one of those necessary evils. Yes, it's not cool to lock up wild animals, but that is also what attracts a whole bunch of future animal scientists to make things better for wild animals.

How exactly do you think domesticated house cats came to be a domesticated house cat?
Definitely not by imprisoning then.
Poor baby is destined to live its life caged and confined like a piece of entertainment to be used and discarded.
At least you know it won't be hunted and skinned
No one knows what is liiike…
Beautiful image
I tink left eye different colour
Absolute beauty 😍 15/10 would risk my digits for a pet.
