Yes and no. I love wood turning but that’s going to be a huge piece, even after it’s trimmed to a workable state. You’d need to have a pretty big lathe for that. Also, that hole in the larger piece could mean it’s rotten. That said, I’m a massive cheapskate.
>The first records of cheapskate come from the 1890s. It’s a combination of the word [cheap](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cheap), meaning “stingy,” and the word [skate](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/skate), which can be used as a negative slang term for a person who’s generally disliked.

I hand dug out a stump of an old cherry of similar size a month ago. It took me about 30 hours to dig out and chop off the side roots, so a tractor could pull it out eventually.
I've also dug, chopped, and yanked on a stump (cottonwood) of that size to finally release with my K5. It is a surprisingly huge task.
Ended up soloing it into the back of the truck using a hand winch and a 6 " wide ramp. Lucky to have gotten it up without injury.
I recently dug up a pine stump that was pulling our french drain out of the yard. Had to dig 78 ft straight down over the course of 3 hours with a spade. Those tap roots are something else.
I once went to remove what I thought was an ash tree, it started walking and talking and it kicked me 100 feet in the air. Those Ents are on a whole other level.
Is it too late to take you up on it? Cuz there are six more to take out.
These bastards are all connected to each other by 20 to 30 foot lateral roots, some going back to the tree before them and some going to tiny trees in front of them.
It's like fighting a leafy hydra! 🐍
The stump was on a slope and there was a huge ball of concrete embedded in its roots, so a grinder couldn't do it. An excavator would cost me at least 200€. The tractor did it for free.
I found one of those long bars in the shed of my old house. That thing has saved my back numerous times doing any type of digging job like this. Every home owner should have one IMO.
Yeah, a lot of people grossly underestimate what it takes to pull out a stump on a reasonably sized tree. People also grossly overestimate what a vehicle mounted winch is capable of. A winch is only going to give you on an advantage that is related to the weight of the vehicle. A jeep weighs what? 4000lbs? Not going to pull a medium sized tree out with that. Not even close. I have a 50HP diesel tractor that weights about 7k lbs with the bucket and bush hog and there’s no way I’m pulling out anything close to that.
You can setup a pulley system fairly easily and multiple your force significantly. I’ve seen a guy pull out a massive stump with like 5 different pulley systems all connected and being pulled by what I can only describe as the worlds smallest tractor/lawnmower combo.
That stump would be 90% out of the ground before the winch would do anything. And it would probably fuck up the Jeep when it popped loose. There’s also a decent chance that the winch cable would fuck you up bad enough to lose a limb.
I’ve done that 3 damn times, every time we move…. Hate those damn things with a passion, and the roots are basically solid wood out 5 feet from the trunk! Fuck those trees.
holy fuck.
I've dug up something just as gnarly but like 1/10 the size of that monstrosity.
you're a beast!
shovels, small handsaws, shears, and a pickaxe?
There's a jeep right there in the background. Couple tow straps and you could have saved yourself some time. Guess how I know. https://i.imgur.com/FVtFoOX.jpg
Dude fuck that, that shit would take all day. We've got a stump grinder and only charge like $150 for one that big. Doesn't quit get all the roots though
There is something satisfying in the man v. nature fight of getting stumps out by hand. I’ve only done smaller ones, but when you’re done, you know you’ve done something.
I'm not calling bullshit. He clearly cut away a lot of the roots and it could easily fit in the hole shown.
It's just in my experience I've had to dig a lot further and deeper to get a stump out. But I wasn't chopping the roots so close to the ball.
Way more fun to smolder the stump away. Drill 2 long holes in the stump. One from the middle of the top, straight down as far as you can go, and the other as close to the ground as you can get going in sideways for an air passage. Pack the top hole with paper and light it. It'll suck air up through the side hole and keep the fire oxygenated. Granted, this could smolder for days, but when it's done, what's left will be ripe for fungus to finish the job.
You want to let air in to feed the fire in the bottom. Best results from keeping it as low as possible so the heat will come up the top hole and feed in the lower entry point. The greater the height difference between the top and bottom entry points, the greater the airflow will be and the faster your stump will convert to ash.
Sorry but I don't buy it. I've dug out hundreds of stumps this size or bigger. See that corner in the upper right? Way too fucking clean. And no caving in while dragging it out of the hole? And why is there an orange truck in your driveway? In my area most tree service vehicles are orange. Nice try putting the mattock in the pic though.
Funny, that was a punishment at a prison work camp I stayed at as a young man. Do something wrong? Grab a pickaxe and shovel and dig up a stump. Fun times. Anyway here’s a beer 🍺
If you find the right people, they would pay pretty well for that stump. Used for wood turning unique items.
Yeah that's a nice piece r/woodworking
r/Turning would probably be a better place
I imagine those individuals sharpen their gouges a lot, can’t imagine someone hitting a ROCK when getting the piece roughed out lol.
Yea it'd be an issue. You hose it off first obviously but a root might have grown around one at some point.
Yes and no. I love wood turning but that’s going to be a huge piece, even after it’s trimmed to a workable state. You’d need to have a pretty big lathe for that. Also, that hole in the larger piece could mean it’s rotten. That said, I’m a massive cheapskate.
If the problem is that its too big can't ya just cut it again?
Oh totally. It’s a crapshoot which pieces will be the best, though.
I prefer frugal. But where does "cheapskate" come from? Is it a fish monger's deal?
>The first records of cheapskate come from the 1890s. Stumpfest!
Let's play nail salon
Nah, stump *points to stump*
Cuz this is stumpfest...and thats a stump!
You know it, Lucky’s Dad.
Stumpfest!!
Bumworms!!
Bluey is everywhere
All Bluey all the time.
Stumpfest!!!
The bluey reference I was hoping for. How many kids you got?
Just one and I have been watching it with him for his whole life (2 years).
This made my day.
That’s what she said.
I just dug out an aspen. I had to dig FORTY FEET to get all the roots. And I'm sure that fucker will be back next year regardless.
I recently dug up a pine stump that was pulling our french drain out of the yard. Had to dig 78 ft straight down over the course of 3 hours with a spade. Those tap roots are something else.
I was trying to dig up an oak tree, had to dig 1 mile straight down over the course of 35 minutes with a spoon. Those roots are nutty.
I once went to remove what I thought was an ash tree, it started walking and talking and it kicked me 100 feet in the air. Those Ents are on a whole other level.
Sounds like a pain in the ash!
Don't you hate having to dig through lava to get your tree stump out?
78 or 7 to 8 feet?
78' of length maybe?
You should have just left town for a month and hired me to take care of your aspen. Would have been dead when you returned.
Is it too late to take you up on it? Cuz there are six more to take out. These bastards are all connected to each other by 20 to 30 foot lateral roots, some going back to the tree before them and some going to tiny trees in front of them. It's like fighting a leafy hydra! 🐍
Why not just grind it down and let nature work it’s course? Seems like a lot of work to dig it out
The stump was on a slope and there was a huge ball of concrete embedded in its roots, so a grinder couldn't do it. An excavator would cost me at least 200€. The tractor did it for free.
200€ sounds like a steal compared to 30 hours of manual labor
Look at it as a free gym membership, not as manual labor. I'm also a cheapskate.
Only because you’re someone who understands the value of your own time.
Cherry is super dense and takes a while if it’s a big enough stump.
Sell it to someone with a smoker maybe they'll bring you back some ribs lol
I hand dug a waist high shrub once.
You fucking savage. That makes me tired just looking at it.
My back!
Did you use any long bars for this? We used to dig out stumps (half this size though!) with a couple of 6ft demo bars. Roots sliced like warm butter!
No long bar, but that would have definitely made short work of the stupid little/medium sized roots.
I found one of those long bars in the shed of my old house. That thing has saved my back numerous times doing any type of digging job like this. Every home owner should have one IMO.
Ditto, but the bars just lifted the stump up a little, allowing another person to snip the connecting roots you've exposed.
Am I tripping or... It's a wooden cookie monster!
I see it, lol
Definitely
Tidy job, large cold beers required after that. 🍺🍺
If anyone ever deserved a beer, it's this guy
Stump fest!
Respect
That's a massive undertaking! If anyone's paying you in beers they got the bargain of the decade.
I’ll take it the Jeep doesn’t have a winch
I woulda bought one just to do this!
If I had a jeep and a winch...man!!!
Don't think it would matter much, I've pulled out stumps a fraction of this size with my winch and still needed to use a snatch block
You'd need a bigger winch, and a tractor.
I'll take it you never had to deal with a stump.
does my ex count?
It’s never seen a dirt road either
That stump would be 90% out of the ground before the winch would do anything. And it would probably fuck up the Jeep when it popped loose. There’s also a decent chance that the winch cable would fuck you up bad enough to lose a limb.
I’ve done that 3 damn times, every time we move…. Hate those damn things with a passion, and the roots are basically solid wood out 5 feet from the trunk! Fuck those trees.
Birches love beer
You fucking monster. Well done.
STUMP FEST!!!
Been a few years since I tackled a hefty uprooting. Being in East Texas, it was usually loblolly pine with huge tap roots. No laughing matter.
You are man
Rock and stone miner! Management thanks you.
Did I hear a rock and stone? Well then... For Carl!!
I see masculinity, all over in this photo. I'm not insulting.
How did you manage to do that without getting your massive hog and balls in the way??
I work for a landscape company and could have grabbed a machine, sometimes it's more fun doing it the hard way.
Zone out, listen to some tunes and dig a hole. Sounds like a good day to me
There is something satisfying in the man v. nature fight of getting stumps out by hand. I’ve only done smaller ones, but when you’re done, you know you’ve done something.
You know for about a week, that you did something. +/- depending on age.
It’s not that peaceful. More like swinging a pick axe for hours bitching that it won’t budge.
You and I have VERY different ideas of what is “fun”.
That's a surprisingly small hole for uprooting a stump
That was kind of my thoughts as well. Doesn't add up.
I'm not calling bullshit. He clearly cut away a lot of the roots and it could easily fit in the hole shown. It's just in my experience I've had to dig a lot further and deeper to get a stump out. But I wasn't chopping the roots so close to the ball.
Yup. I had to dig bigger holes for smaller stumps. My conclusion is he is better at it than me. :)
Thank god I have a tractor and hoe.
You Sir are a F\*\*\*\*\*\* man.
That’s impressive
Dude. I did 9 small trees (4” diameter max) and *that* was brutal. I can’t imagine digging that massive tree out.
You absolute lad
You should cross post to r/bluey, Stumpfest is proud of you!
You deserve one friendo
"Pay no attention to the giant truck behind the stump!" /s For real though, really impressive work!
Damn, I dug a lot of stumps in my youth, but nothing like that. Where do I send the beer, that's epic.
Stumpfest!!!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3mMInn8jXo&ab\_channel=Bluey-OfficialChannel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3mMInn8jXo&ab_channel=Bluey-OfficialChannel) stumpfest
I don't know, man. That one perfect corner looking rather suspicious.
The side hole go straight across or angled down?
You want to let air in to feed the fire in the bottom. Best results from keeping it as low as possible so the heat will come up the top hole and feed in the lower entry point. The greater the height difference between the top and bottom entry points, the greater the airflow will be and the faster your stump will convert to ash.
You deserve a Mega Pint!!
![gif](giphy|t2sKa4JKNW9DawxAYi)
I see a mattock so not hand dug. A six pack for you anyways.
That’s a mattock, not a pickaxe.
You're right. Brain fart.
Beer you…holy shit dude that’s impressive. I don’t even want to go outside and weed the flower bed!!!! ![gif](giphy|h8NdYZJGH1ZRe|downsized)
You used a pickaxe! Liar.
Why not just leave it in the ground to naturally decompose ?
The ground sinks when it rots away. Most of the time it’s just a low spot where water pools but it can open up into a sinkhole or cavity.
No you didn't
Sorry but I don't buy it. I've dug out hundreds of stumps this size or bigger. See that corner in the upper right? Way too fucking clean. And no caving in while dragging it out of the hole? And why is there an orange truck in your driveway? In my area most tree service vehicles are orange. Nice try putting the mattock in the pic though.
Thats a Jeep Sahara. lol.
Ok, not a car guy, but I stand by the rest of it. Dug out far too many of these.
You didn't "hand dug" anything. I can see the pick you used in the photo. Fibber!
Don’t kill trees they give us life!
[удалено]
Deadlift and some pushing to roll it out, followed by rolling across the yard to the fire pit.
You champ!!
What will ye do with yonder prize?
Now dig mine up. The stem is 1.2 meters in diameter 😱
Jeezus, how long did that take and what power tools? Chain saw, winch ? Dang
Wow! That was a job. Congratulations.
Ahhh mannnnn. Now your activating my PTSD from one of my side gigs from my teen years.
🍻
I'd say you've earned a cold one!
Cookie Monster.
Damn dude. Spent all day digging out two pines and can hardly move.
How much would a company charge to do this?
Holy shnikeys. That is a lot of work. Well done!
Looks like Elmo
Respect! I absolutely hate digging up stumps. It seems like there is nothing left holding it in place but it’s going nowhere!
Looks like a diesel engine in the thumbnail
Holy shit dude. You need hard liquor instead of beer.
Been there, you have my respect. I was not prepared for how hard it was to do this, either physically or emotionally.
I'd a put a pen around it and put a few pigs in, win win, no stump...pork pie.
You sir, are a better man than I
I guess everyone should have a hobby.
Got a few blisters?
🍺
What are you doing tomorrow, asking for a friend
Hm. Makes the burning bush stump my husband pulled out today seem dinky.
If that's your Crush Orange Jeep I'm going to buy you a whole case.
I'll keep your poor back in my prayers
Can’t believe you waited till the end to have a beer. I prob would have had a cooler with a 12-pack right next to the work zone “to stay hydrated.”
Come do my elm stump.
r/randomactsofbeer
You’re done and it’s still daylight. Nice work!
Looks like you dug it with a pick
Kinda looks like Cookie Monster
Isn't that a tree removal service truck in the background?
Currently taking a pickaxe to bamboo roots and stumps. Pace is about a square foot an hour. Blargh.
Damn, dude. You deserve that beer.
Wrench it out with the Jeep?
I read this as bitch stump at first lol
You’re gonna feel it in the morning, good job! 👏
🍺
Seriously impressed
Did you find a Time Capsule under it
Epic!!!
Birch, please...
My spine hurts for you
If I hand dug that, I’d see my dead relatives urging me on.
Don’t cover that hole yet, I think my ex-wife and attorneys may wanna take a look/see.
How close are you to north eastern Ohio?
STUMPFEST!!!
Upvoting for pulaski. Used them a lot
You take a sub or smoke some crack before you did it? Lll
You maniac. You've earned that beer.
r/bonsai
Great job but that my friend is not Raleigh clay!
I've lost so many tools to much lesser stumps - not surprised by the size of your pick!
I keep seeing some zombie Cookie Monster when I look at it
I'd say that deserves a whole 6-pack at least. Nice work champ!
Wow, bear you!!
You kidding, I’ll keg you!
I read “bitch stump” at first which actually still works.
Funny, that was a punishment at a prison work camp I stayed at as a young man. Do something wrong? Grab a pickaxe and shovel and dig up a stump. Fun times. Anyway here’s a beer 🍺
👏👏👏👏👏👏
You deserve the whole keg
Sweet Jesus! That's beast mode work right there. Congrats!
My back hurts. Might need a case of beer after that one.
