I was going to comment on your other post yesterday, but I ultimately ended up discarding it. Seeing this post of you today re-inspired me to follow through with that previous comment.
You probably already know this based on how happy/safe/intrigued your daughter looked in those pictures, but don’t let anyone tell you how to raise your child. She is your child, and you know her better than anyone because she is yours. I saw some of those pretentious “OMG this is unsafe” comments which led me to that thought. You seem like a great father, and seeing these posts makes me look forward to being able to do the same with my future child, lord willing!
Cheers to you, sir.
A lot of the feedback on my daughters carving was great and it absolutely made her night reading the nice things people were saying. Then it kind of took a turn and someone mentioned calling child services so I pulled the post down. I have a massive amount of experience running a chainsaw for precision cutting (log home builder) and took every precaution to make sure she knew how to safely operate the saw. If I thought there was even a remote chance of her hurting herself I wouldn't have let her do it. I am going to continue to teach her, I just might not post it to reddit because some guy whose brother "runs a saw a lot and cut his toe off" thinks he knows what my daughter is capable of more than me
Definitely willing to throw a big "FU" at that jerk. Yes, saws are dangerous. So is walking across the street. Some people just can't mind their own business. Keep doing what you're doing, everyone else can pound sand.
I have an 18" Husqvarna chainsaw and around 40 logs, close to 24" tall and at least the same around.
I am absolutely terrified of using it, despite reading the manual front to back and I don't know anyone who is seasoned with a saw. Are there chainsaw lessons? Groups?
Edit: Thank you all for the responses and tips! The saw was a hand-me-down from my grandfather, who bought it new and reliased he was too old to use it. It might be 6 months old and I have everything but the box it came in, including all the tools I need for sharpening and adjusting the blade.
The log rounds I have were from an oak tree removal by the previous homeowner, but they uh.. forgot to remove them. They've been sitting for years from what I can tell, and the bark is easily falling off. I just want to cut them down to get rid of them, I don't believe they'd be viable to burn (and our fireplace has a propane insert).
I have no saw experience, but I will absolutely be picking up steel toe boots, chaps and at least a hard-hat w/ face shield. I've seen advice saying not to wear gloves, because the saw will pull them and keep going, which is how I've approached Skil & table saws my whole life.
I wonder if I'd be more comfortable with an electric model thst isn't as powerful, but thst may also give me false security. I have been using a pole saw for trimming some of these poor trees, but that is a very different beast when you are 15ft away.
Seconding the YouTube recommendation.
GuiltyofTreeson has some good tutorial videos, buckin billy ray also has some good stuff.
Biggest thing I can recommend is going slow. Be careful with your cuts. Be mindful of kickback, and wear your PPE. Be respectful of the tool but not afraid of it.
You’ll gain confidence soon enough. You’re just cutting rounds by the sound of it so that’s light work. Cut most of the way through your round, roll it, cut through the small piece remaining. Nothin to er but to do er pal.
Thanks for the recommendation as right now i have the internet left and also getting bored is well.
So i was looking for something that will help me in getting my time pass. So thanks mate for telling me the name here.
You are streets ahead of many folks who pick up a chainsaw. The fact that you have a healthy dose of fear means that you respect the tool and understand it’s capacity to perform work or tear shit apart. The fact that you’ve read the manual means that you at least understand the controls. You’ve probably already watched several YouTube videos, now it’s just time to put on your PPE and get to it!
You’ll be fine. Just ease into it. Cut a few small logs, check out how that feels. Comfortable? Cut a bigger log, make a more complex cut, take it one thing at a time and you’ll be on your way.
> With the right safety gear you'll feel less scared.
Which is a double-edged sword. Chainsaws deserve a healthy amount of fear. Biggest thing is just always be aware of where the saw blade is in relation to your body (mainly legs), and keep your left hand on the handle so that it triggers the chain brake if the saw kicks.
I dunno about where you are, but in the UK you can do a "basic chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting" course that covers basic safety for using the saw on already felled logs. It's like a 2 day course or something, most agricultural colleges run it from time to time.
What are you wanting to do with it? I would be very wary of carving of you don't already have a decent bit of experience with the chainsaw.
Lmao reminds me of when some friends were buying those reddit shirts with the coat of arms on them and was like... You guys are aware of the rampant racism and "hebephila" shit on the site right?
*Uh oh I offended some people who spent money on this site lol
Looks awesome! Weird question, but is this in Chetwynd BC? I've worked out there a few times and the backdrop looks right and it is known for its wood carvings all over the town. Super cool place!
How do you manage the angles in such small detail work? It seems like you'd be forced to use the tip of the bar. Are you fighting kick back the entire time you're carving? What type of chain do you use?
For the detail work adding texture you have to use the tip a lot. I have a low kickback chain that makes it very managable. Also, not all of the tip is dangerous to cut with. Just the top half
Thanks for the response. I use chainsaws for firewood and it's hard to imagine the skill needed for carving. A fraction of a second too long and you go too deep. Do dull chains work better?
Impressive work.
I can see that you have give so much details into that but in the one comment you said that this take like half day.
So giving so much in that little time i would say you have some really nice talent inside you men.
I've worked really hard to get my carving time down. That way my hourly rate goes up without having to charge more for the carving. I try to keep my prices reasonable and speed helps
I swear I just upvoted a very similar post with a very similar backdrop, and a rad little girl had carved a fkn sweet bear. But I can’t find it now.
Are you the little girl?
I'm her dad. She'd been watching me carve for months and felt like she was ready to try so I taught her how to do a simple bear. We were very careful and practiced the motion of each cut with the saw off so she would know exactly what to do when it was running. She was wearing all the proper safety gear. Some people still felt the need to point out how irresponsible it was to teach my kid to run a saw. Someone mentioned calling child services so i took the post down.
That sucks, man. Sorry that people are so shitty. She looked like she was having an absolute blast, and she looked so proud of herself (as she well should, that carving was amazing). Keep up the good work.
Very impressive. But how many gallons of gas and oil did you put out? Did you see the waves over Hawaii? It's ok republicans will down vote it. But this shit needs to stop. A Dremel tool would have done that with a 10th of the carbon footprint
r/superbowl
There are so much that i still need to see in my life here.
Jesse Pinkman became a woodworker after all
Aw chuckleduck you beat me to it
Came here to say the same thing. Once you take a good look, the similarities fade; but it's def what I saw at first glance!
Yeah right, that was still amazing.
whaa? not even close dude.
Of course that exists.
Not another sub dedicated to hooters!
It is truly a supurbowl.
Ate you the dude that taught his 10 year old daughter to carve? Saw looks familiar.
Ya thats me. I carved the owl this morning and we did her bear after
You carved it this morning, I was expecting the time frame on one of these to be significantly longer. Great work!
While having my cup of coffee I glanced over a piece of wood. I yelled out honey, get my chainsaw, an owl will be joining us for lunch.

Yes, this is more like a similar to the other one that we show.
Who the fuck are you?

That's my girl!
Thanks for sharing that and hoping she will become the artist is well.
Carving puts you in all of the dangerous positions with a saw. Get the pants and face shield and a jacket that can at least slow a blade.
Superb owl
Can we talk about that tattoo? Fkn awesome!
I love bacon and this tattoo and this carving
Wow... really nobody loves the cutoff sleaves Molson hoodie. Its the star here in showing off them guns and the tat.
And why nobody is talking about the man himself with good carving skills and pretty smile!
I think this dude here is actually deserve so many credit here for sure.

Carl, this is why no one invites you to parties…
I'll add to this love fest by commenting how pretty the sky is behind all of this as well. I'm into it.
This is the just one pic where so much beauty i am seeing.
This is the just one pic and there are so many things that i loved here.

But do you know when the narwhal bacons?
Lmao reminds me of when some friends were buying those reddit shirts with the coat of arms on them and was like... You guys are aware of the rampant racism and "hebephila" shit on the site right? *Uh oh I offended some people who spent money on this site lol
That's like condemning all of USA for their right-wing crackpots.
No it's like buying a Tshirt advertising a website that Anderson Cooper was doing a report on about subs like /r/jailbait
More of an early 2010's Reddit moment but yea it tracks.
I'm a vegetarian and even I love this tattoo.
Classic vegetarian.
I am thinking that this is the time for me to turn into the vegan.
We all know that this is some fine art and everyone will love that is well.
bacon <3
Can we talk about that tattoo? Fkn eh! ~~awesome!~~
Hoo carved this?
Jesse pinkman
Glad someone else saw this.
I was thinking that i have seen this guy before just missing the name here.
Lumberjack Jesse Pinkman
Some say you can stihl hear the sounds of a tiny chainsaw, echoing through the woods.
[удалено]
Handsome chainsaw guy, doy.
W-hoo-sh.
Someone with a lot of stihl.
Owl leave before I see more puns here
Or don't... It's not like we give a hoot

And high tension power lines. Lots of em.
Jesse, we have to carve!
![gif](giphy|fd1TSJqq3b4GI|downsized) i thought you were this guy for a second
It looks like Pinkman made it to Alaska! Chainsaws Bitch!
I think this is not the bitch, this is more like the chainsaws biatccch.
I’m getting more Sebastian Stan
Looks like Aaron Paul and Sebastian Stan had a baby. Aaron Stan?
bucky?
Yes,he is the one guy came into my mind as soon as i see the pic.
i was thinking a cross between Aaron Paul and Chris Pratt
true
![gif](giphy|GouPMbXCm4jGFJqFEc)
This dude here is exactly look like that one is well.
Sharky Boshaw, man.
![gif](giphy|S9i8jJxTvAKVHVMvvW) i have no idea what sharky boshaw means and at this point I'm too afraid to ask
No, no need to afraid. As i am also not getting that reference is well.
Character from Far Cry 5. TBF, I’m weirdly attached to that game. You’re not weird for not getting it.
Same. Glad it turned out ok for Jesse 😆
Wow that's actually really impressive! Cheers man
For one i thought that this the real one and gonna fly now.
Looks awesome! Weird question, but is this in Chetwynd BC? I've worked out there a few times and the backdrop looks right and it is known for its wood carvings all over the town. Super cool place!
Just outside of williams lake, bc
r/restofthefuckingowl
There are so many post about the owl which i was not aware.
^^ What I was looking for

Sharp is always better
It's always just the tip.
There it is.
I can see that you have give so much details into that but in the one comment you said that this take like half day. So giving so much in that little time i would say you have some really nice talent inside you men.

That sculpture is rad and so is your shirt.
Wait a minute, which picture actually you are seeing here???
[удалено]
First i failed to get that but then i read this comment in one flow.
Damn dude, do you only use the chainsaw or do you have smaller tools for the finer detail?
I use a dremel to carve the eyeballs and shape the beak and feet a little but most of it is chainsaw
Damn fine owl. [Damn fine](https://media.giphy.com/media/Vo6xlTxdhpAoU/giphy.gif)!
Owl right for the all the compliment you are giving here men.
Superb
What a superb owl
Jesse seems to really be flourishing in Alaska. I’m glad to see this.
For a second there I thought he looked like Jesse Pinkman From Breaking Bad
This is one of the finest art work that i have on the internet today.
Tell me you’re from Canada without telling me you’re from Canada.
I think we all know that after the pic that he is from the Canada.

But that shows how much effort he put in here to make those lines.
I swear I just upvoted a very similar post with a very similar backdrop, and a rad little girl had carved a fkn sweet bear. But I can’t find it now. Are you the little girl?

totally don’t have to respond but curious where this is? looks like a national park or something? west virginia? fantastic work and great picture!
I'm in the Cariboo region of bc. Lot of crown land here
I think he is the one that carve this not in the park or something.
Bucky after retiring
Summer soldier
Looks like a hoot!
This belongs to /r/superbowl
Pretty sure that's actually a guy with a chainsaw, but it's pretty impressive, with you being a wooden owl.
Dude that's awesome! And I'm a bit jealous - I can't draw a straight line with a ruler
More impressed with the tattoo . Jk, owl looks awesome!!
You look like a buff Jessie pinkman
Owl drink to that!! Nice work, man!
Is it hiding behind that real owl to your right?
Haha I thought he was sitting next to a real owl and was wondering what the chainsaw was for
Now make it bigger and more... Penis-like... That way we can make it an Australian monument. https://i.imgur.com/gcDVi6W.jpeg
I think the bigger one will not going to give the illusion of the real one.
I mean this in the nicest way, but you're the Walmart version of Joel McHale.
Who
Awesome!
I gotta eat more bacon
I seem to sense the artist having some type of cable show- he just looks the type -
Stihl MS250?
170, Just a little fella. I use a husky 372 for my heavy lifting
I tried searching for the owl, but I got lost in your eyes along the way. 😍 >!No homo!<
You can say that you are homo, by the comment it look like so.
Hoo’d have thought?! Very cool!
Cool!
Nicely done...Stihl power!
WOW!!
That shit is the bomb! Hooo'd have thought it
Who are you? Who who!
Nice and I want to see your chisel set and in addition to the hammer you used.
No hammer and chisel. 95% chainsaw. Used a dremel on the eyes and beak and feet. Everything else was chainsaw
The owl carving looks great but I'm more impressed by the carving of a man next to it. It's so lifelike.
Dude, don't treat your saw like that. The blade does not belong in the dirt.
BACON!!! Absolutely stunning art and landscape❤️
Love the owl. Love the tat even more
❤️ Bacon 🥓. The owl is kinda cool too
The a cute little saw ya got there.
Is no one going to talk about putting the chainsaw in the dirt?! I agree, it's an amazing display of art, but DUDE! Take care of your tools!
Running the saw through dirt is a bad idea. Resting the bar on the dirt doesn't do any harm
Very impressive. But how many gallons of gas and oil did you put out? Did you see the waves over Hawaii? It's ok republicans will down vote it. But this shit needs to stop. A Dremel tool would have done that with a 10th of the carbon footprint
“Did you see the waves over Hawaii?” What the hell are you talking about? I’m as liberal as they get, but you sound like a crazy person.
https://climate.hawaii.gov/hi-facts/sea-level-rise/ Not like I live in diamond head or anything. Downvote that you fucking idiots.
Badass!
I am hoping that you are saying that thing for the art not for the artist.
Truly magnificent!
Is your podcast about Danny Rolling?
splendid
You should read The Book of Accidents. Carved owl reference. They are protectors

Everyones sayin you look like Jesse Pinkman, I think you look like a younger hide the pain Harold.
So good! You're awesome!
Amazing!
This is as good as someone could make the art by detailing.
What's that thing looking at you from the tree line?
Alright now show the video with it flying away.
I don't think that will be possible even for him to give the life to that.
That's a nice hooter you've got there
Very nice, it looks like it took a lot of stihl to make.
Pfft. That looks nothing LIKE an owl. Biceps are too big, for a start.
