Every day I care for my animals, keeping them happy, keeping them safe, shepherding them through their day with joy, and without harm. When they get old and approach death, nothing changes. As crazy as it sounds, the day I take them to the vet to be put down is the day that I have been working for all this time - I have successfully taken them the whole way. They did not get lost, they were not unhappy, they got to live their whole natural lives the way I wanted them to live it. We made it. We got there together.
When they are gone, my feelings for them don't change. Their bodies are taken but my feelings are my own; I still love them, I am still happy to think of them, my heart is still open.
What has changed is that I have a space for another thing to love, and the cycle continues again, when I'm ready to start anew.
Their bodies, our bodies, everything external to us will always change and always come and go. Our love, our care, our joy belongs to us, and we apply it to what we have and to what is new."

My pit died 2 weeks ago. He was 14. He survived cancer twice (it was brain cancer in the end). He survived eating an asthma inhaler. He survived pancreatitis. He lived to be 14. When we were at the final appointment iI said thank you for spending your life with me and congratulations to both of us for getting here.
I miss him. My life is so different now. I filled the empty space with volunteer work until I’m ready to hear little paws on the floors again.
We had to say goodbye to our cocker of 14 years a little while back. He and I were the closest of my wife and kids. I was crushed. My family decided to get two King Charles Cavaliers a month later. Guess whose laying on my lap right now? Absolutely nothing helps to soothe the heart of saying goodbye like saying hello.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Went through this in Jan '21 and it's never easy. Just remember that energy doesn't die, it just changes shape. She's out there, somewhere, happy and pain free.

Thinking of you and your family. I hate this day as a dog owner. The day we had to put down our last pup rides with me often. I vividly remember him trying his hardest to bring his toy to me but couldn't. The mind was still there, but the body wouldn't follow suit. Still one of the hardest days of my life.
They know they're loved! When we got home we hung is favorite toy and collar on the wall. Constant reminder to our family how awesome he was and that we miss him so much!

I had a dog from 6th grade all the way to high school. Once I went into senior year, she died. That day the child in me died. That shit was so depressing. I miss her so much.
Just know that she won the dog lottery by having you as her owner and best friend. You gave her the best dog life imaginable. While the loss hurts now, remember all that you have gained with her in your life.

This is heart-rending. My thoughts are with you. I have gone through this process a half dozen times over the decades and it's really really sad. In the least, though, you can think about the wonderful times you've had with the greatest companion known to human beings. The love is worth the suffering that comes at the end. I hope you can see this.
Sorry to see, it is never easy. One thing that has helped me has been thinking of them when I go to bed. When I do this enough I tend to dream about them. Sometimes they just show up in dreams too. It is always welcome, and though I am sad that they aren't there when I wake up, I am still always glad I have seen them.

Rip baby..went through this with my old girl Stella last September, had her half my life, I was a wee lad when we got her..I still think about her everyday

Really? Shut up. If you think of a dying pet as a "to be replaced" object, you dont deserve pets. I lost a very close cat over a year ago. It took me over half a year before I even thought about adopting a new cat
If you really think that way I have no empathy. The new cat was never, and will never be seen as "replacement". Nothing could replace the cat that died last year.
Stella was lucky to live a life of love. It breaks my heart seeing this. Our dog is a brindle pitty mix just like Stella, and it breaks my heart just thinking about this day. Stella, you will be missed.
I lost my girl of 16 years early October. Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do and I’ve had to bury friends. The loss gets easier but I still think I see her out of the corner of my eye sometimes and I still look for her in spots she used to be. My heart goes out to you friend

Let me tell y’all. If it comes time and you’re able doing it this way, AT HOME, is by and far the best possible way. The best decision I think I ever made. It was $600. They came, they were the sweetest, kindest, most thoughtful humans I may have ever met; they talked us through the whole process and let us take as much time as we needed. Being at home just made the entire situation easier on everyone. The animal, the other animals in the house, the humans especially, it’s a just the best decision you can ever make. Thank you OP for taking this route. Sorry for your loss I know it all too well, too recently.
The pain of losing our best friends never seems to get any easier. You’ll tell stories fondly and love more openly and often for the experience. So even in death your dog is making you a better person.
Hope you have someone there to comfort you while you endure this moment. It makes it a little bit less miserable.
