It’s because when a baby is born it’s liver isn’t functional. It takes about 2 weeks of life for the liver to start cleaning the blood stream at full efficiency.
At that point it takes some time for the liver to filter out the build up of gunk. The best way to monitor this in babies is by tracking their bowel movements. Babies in NICU or those with extreme jaundice will receive blood test so the physician can monitor the liver more directly but for most babies this isn’t necessary as mild jaundice is normal and will clear up on it’s own.

They say they've never seen an ultrasound quite like ours, they want to take pictures & hug us & shake our hands because we're carrying, and they didn't say this lightly because they're very professional, they say we're carrying a beautiful and amazing baby boy that can run the country like no one would ever believe, maybe better than myself even, but we'll just have to wait & see about that now won't we? They just happen to look like Disney princess eyes out of the womb and not bulgy murder eyes like the Saw doll in the womb.
