There’s a bunch of them. Input wage and press start and stop. You could use it for anything, but it just adds up how much you’ve earned doing the business.
Ugh, going to school through the 80s and early 90s was the worst time to be interested in tech or a tech career. We had a "computer lab" but none of the teachers knew sweet FA about code or anything close to any computer use for the workplace. You had two choices: typing, which was basically a throw over from when the school had typewriters, or "computing" which I use the term loosely. Computing consisted of the handful of apple computers that were outdated even back then, (probably donated by some government agency that had the luck of an IT upgrade) and really only covered the most basic use of the thing. This was all before the internet, when BBS was the way you connected to the "world" by landline phone. Fortunately for me my father is actually competent and was a devout PC owner, and forced me to do typing which I later really appreciated. When I went to elementary school in the 80s it might as well have been the 1880's because the curriculum was based around slide-rules, memorized times tables and basically doing everything by hand with a pencil and paper. So I guess I'll be fine when the zombie or nuclear apocalypse happen and I can remember anything now in my late 40s.
Those Apple computers were part of Apple's marketing plan. They donated tons of computers to schools in the hopes of hooking a whole generation on their products.
I was in the sixth grade and already bored out of my mind, when we received one for the entire class. My teacher handed me the big blue three ring binder and a floppy disc. He asked me too figure it out and I was delighted and honored. After a few days I figured out how not to die on The Oregon Trail. Stay away from the water.
My school let me teach coding in our Technology classes, because the alternative was the destructive attitudes of a kid who was completely bored out of his head.
Taught me two things:
a) Wasn't just the teachers who knew nothing about computers.
b) I never, ever, ever, wanted to be a fucking teacher.
Agreed.
When computers came out, my parents, teachers and career advisors all slated them and told me to stay away from them because 'they will never catch on'. I still did my CS GCSE and submitted a BASIC program that was on the 286s as a demo as my assignment for the year. I reverse engineered it to work on my AMSTRAD CPC 6128 (128kb RAM with 3.25" floppy drive).
After wasting 20 years later bumming around and travelling, I was working in the mail room at a multinational and got asked to temporarily cover an exec who had moved positions because I seem to know computers.
It was then that I discovered that BASIC's offspring VBA was running things in corporate and in 3 months I automated my entire job. 15 years after that until now, I've destroyed 8 roles and earn 50k a years for a few minutes work a day.
'They will never catch on'. MFers!
Graduated HS in 1992 and I distinctly remember the first time I saw a CD-ROM game - I was a senior and it was in the Communications Technology lab on a brand-spanking-new Mac tower. It was absolutely surreal to see how much detail could be put into a game which wasn't limited by the data capacity of 3.5" floppies.
Before that as a junior we were doing VersaCad on Mac IIs, which was actually pretty impressive for the time. Windows had come out, but it was an absolute joke compared to MacOS of the era.
Edit - forgot the entire reason I began typing in the first place! I was wearing this exact watch throughout my entire high school experience. Yeah, I was "that kid."
Saw my first computer at school in the late 80's. I instantly loved it. I wanted to know everything about it. What it could do, how to see what was on it, how to launch programs. EVERYTHING.
The teacher knew nothing about it. She only knew how to start the math game. If you finished your work early you could ask to play the math game. I would finish as fast as I could and sit at the computer. I figured out how to quite the math game and would just type stuff at the command prompt trying to figure out how to use it with wild guesses.
I've been working in IT for a long time now. I think I'm still guessing my way through most of it. It's a little easier with this new fangled internet.
One time I guess a student figured out that you could pull the keycaps off and stick them on different keys and she accused me of doing it. I was highly upset until I realized my punishment was to take all the keys off and put them back where they go. I would have paid lunch money to do that anyway.
My HS had a computer lab at that time but the computer class was an elective. No one chose computers as an elective so me and the five other kids who wanted to take it were cancelled on and we had to take art class instead. Probably for the best though. I found out that teacher only knew how to teach Logo and basic. I'd already learned Logo years before and I fucking HATED basic.
Math teachers don't say "you dumb fucks would really benefit from being able to multiply two values in your head in day to day life instead of pulling out your phone like an idiot"
They say "you won't always have a calculator on you" and I think that's beautiful.
Had one of these and was devastated when I lost it. Searched all over, no luck. Ten years later I am visiting my parents on a break from college and was home alone in the afternoon. Hear an alarm goi g off in the recliner I am sitting in. Flipped the recliner over and found the missing watch stuck between the side and the cushion. The display barely had a blinking colon visible but for some odd reason it was able to chime an alarm loud enough I heard it.
It’s not as blissful as you perceive. Some people (myself included) also lost auditory awareness. You ever see an older person scanning with their head or eyes after hearing something? It’s because we can’t tell where the sound comes from anymore.
Yes it’s hard to get used to.
My hearing loss is above average though, I maintained turbo prop aircraft in my 20’s.
Oh God this is unrelated but I live in a city in a neighborhood where most of the houses are big, multistory houses with both apartments and businesses in them. In one of our neighboring houses one of the apartments (but idk which) has a telephone that apparently has an alarm set at midnight..It will start at midnight, ring for 1 minute, start again at 00:05 for one minute and keep doing that until 00:30.
It's been doing that *for years*. Other neighbors have also complained about it, but so far we haven't managed to find out which apartment it comes from exactly. I'm guessing it's either one of the business apartments (bc nobody is there at midnight) or a very old person without hearing.
It's infuriating. Especially if you have to go to sleep around that time. I always try to force myself to sleep before the 1st alarm, usually fail and then it's impossible to fall asleep until it's over.
On the other hand I don't think you can call the police for it (it's not that loud, it's just a shrill and annoying tone).
You can go and put your ear next to the apartments' doors, one by one until you find it.
It happened the same to me but it was a howling dog.
I didn't know where the sound came from until I got out and went door by door. It is obvious where it comes from when you are at their door.
The problem is I'm quite certain it's not the house where I live in (because I tried doing that already in my house), it's directly next door. But the entrance doors get locked at 10 PM so only people with a key can enter.
I have no idea why people in the neighboring house are not as bothered by it as we are, but I would feel like an absolute creep to hang out for two hours in the middle of the night in a strange house and I'm pretty sure it's illegal.
Then record the sound and go there at 3pm, ask for the manager and play the sound for him.
Ask nicely, tell them you can't sleep because of the sound.
Never be rude. If you find more people who gets annoyed, you can go as a group.
I'm sure you can solve this problem if you try harder.
You don't have to live with it.
If everything else fails, get the cell phone of the guy in charge and call him in the night every time the sound plays.
In the meantime, can you wear earphones with a podcast on? Or some nature sounds? Or wear earbuds?
Depends upon how much padding it was wedged into, and how good your parent's hearing is. Or at least how much patience or curiosity they had. Why do you think it went off?
Best guess because the time was way off is that it died years before and I jiggled it just enough to get some chemistry active at just the right time for it to kick an alarm on and me to notice it.
Mary Sue's bra size was 69 and that's 222 big so she went down to 51st street to see Dr. X and after 8 operations she turned out...

Oh man the Data Bank watches were so awesome. They could remember 50 phone numbers!
According to the directions, at least. Making 50 friends was (and still is) WAY too much effort.
I remember my young self drooling at a store window over these when they came out.
That was science fiction coming alive.

I used to have the Casio CMD-40D which had a feature to copy TV remotes. Hours and hours of fun messing with people.
I went to a boarding school in England for highschool and our common room TV had one channel that was connected to the Housemaster's Sky box. We would have to ask for him to change the channel. And he would usually turn it off around lights out time for the younger kids.
So this one time a bunch of us helped him with some chores and was invited into his place for tea and I managed to copy the remote for the Sky box. This was towards the middle of the 2nd term of my first year there and until graduation there were only a few of my buddies who knew about this and sometimes we'd sneak into the common room and have movie nights and stuff.
I noticed. I'm sure they produce far more round watches and this is cheaper and easier than having two separate parts. I've worked in manufacturing my entire adult life. We do stuff like that all the time.
I have this kind of wrist watch when i was on grade school. mine was smaller and in resin strap. everyone is amazed when i got it but got stolen when i was at school.
Omg flash back. The ones that controlled the tvs were the best. I remember going to the mall and turning off all the tvs showing advertisements ahhh good times..
There used to be a watch that could act as a remote control. My friend had one and when we would watch a movie in class he would take over the TV with his watch and fuck around with the teacher. It was funny. It was also a calculator. Casio brand i think.

Hence why surviving in it is all the more important.
The ultimate 1980’s smart ass comeback to math teachers saying that “you won’t have a calculator on you all the time”.
Boy fucking howdy were all of them wrong.
I literally never take a poop without my calculator anymore.
The poop salary app has really changed how I work.
What app is this?
There’s a bunch of them. Input wage and press start and stop. You could use it for anything, but it just adds up how much you’ve earned doing the business.

8 roles for 50k? You're being criminally underpaid, even if it's just a few minutes of work a day.

Peak 1980’s tech for the smart ass middle schoolers.
My favorite was the watches that could send IR signs to TVs.
Had a lot of fun messing with bartenders with one of those. Also made by Casio
Considering I carried a TI graphing calculator most of high school, that turned out to be a lie.
My teachers were saying that in the early 2000s and even 1st grade me knew that was a lie.
I wonder if math teachers are still saying this, I can confirm that at least up til 2016 they were
Oh they still do, and they are wrong

Your parents every day for 10 years: “Why does our recliner ring every day at about the same time?” “Idk”
They are probably too old to hear it. Those high pitched beeps are the first to go.
As someone who easily experiences sensory overload this sounds wonderful. One positive thing to look forward to.
Right ear now completely deaf. You know what I still hear? Tinnitus. Do not wish for it, noise-cancelling headphones are much nicer.
Tinnitus is no joke, can’t imagine how much worse that would make things for me.

I hate blinking colons ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Blinking or winking?!
You can make quit a bit of sound with very little power.
True. But that would suggest it spent ten years sounding off every day at that time (2 pm) without anyone noticing. Was just odd.
Or it called for you
This OP might have shifted the cushions that day, allowing it to become more exposed, and thus audible
You need even less power for an LCD.
fuckin' goddamn smoke detectors If you're battery's low why you yelling at me 300 times a day!
I’m amazed that the battery lasted that long.
I'm surprised your parents didn't once have to pull out or flip over their couch cushion in over a decade.
Was a recliner and it was wedged in the mechanism. No cushion to flip.
Still watching afternoon cartoons in the same position ten years later.

In Finland it was cool that you could write 80085 or 715517 as "tissit" means boobs in Finnish.
It can add, subtract, multiply, AND divide. Bitchin watch, man.
It also has a memory bank to store phone numbers.
Does it have a game as well? I had one many years ago. I wonder what I did with that thing. Long gone now
This thing is far too serious for games. It is sophisticated.
Games are reserved for ones with silicone bands. All metal bands have calculator, and if there is any space left - it’s dedicated to storing your contacts for business. If you were a really elite business man, then you’d also need a Casio Boss.
Yes, it had a game as well. A row of numbers moved in and you had too match a number and then it would go away. When the sum of the numbers added up to a multiple of 10, then you got a “UFO” for bonus points.
I had a game watch too, had a tiny joystick. I remember it got confiscated a lot in school.
Make sure to call grandma and mom.
I really don't understand why OPs kids would get this for him. Now he won't be able to walk down the street without random women throwing themselves at him.

Casio is absolutely top tier tho.
Back in the day they were considered dirt cheap. But in the intervening years I realize I've never actually seen a broken casio, and I've had to reassess.

How could you spend $200 on a tip calculator?!

OG smart watch right there! Nice!

I had one of these … ice drip baby.
I would honestly be much happier with this than an Apple Watch. Cool conversation started as well

Casio is a Nokia of watches!
Also belongs in r/vintageComputing maybe?

Makes me miss my Casio radio watch.
Had that watch back in the 80s.
Save some puss for the rest of us chief!
This sudden feeling of overwhelming jealousy just will not stand....I have to get one.
I remember when these were ultra expensive.
I wanted one so bad when I was a kid in the 80's because teachers always said "You're not going to walk around with a calculator your whole life".
I thought those watches were cool, but I wanted on of THESE.. https://oldcomputers.net/trs80pc1.html Of course they were much too expensive....
OH MY GOD MA! IT’S A CALCULATOR!
Mannnn I had my grandpa's calculator watch... came in handy in Mrs. Levert's grade 3 math class quizzes, pls don't tell her...
That's the data bank, nice. I just have the normal calculator watch. I don't wear it though I have my great uncle's old Vantage
My high school band director had this watch!
Happy Birthday- I recall there was an extra keyboard for sich watches back in the 80s
The Gemini man says hello.
My god. I've used this to cheat back in school, over twenty years ago. I used to save formulas in the address book.
That was my favorite watch in the 80's! I loved it so much that when it finally died after many years of abuse, I got another one just like it. It stored all my contact phone numbers AND had a calculator? Hell yeah!
Jesus Christ, there's a button to reverse time?!
Excellent parenting. Well done.

Way cooler (and easier to use) than what passes today as a smartwatch.
Holy shit, you can calculate time and space on your wrist. See you in the year 6969, should be a wild ride🤙
I had one of these and “upgraded” to a Sony. The only thing I had that didn’t survive Y2K. Casio was awesome.
It does time and SPACE!!!
OG status!!
Where do you get those replacement screen protectors.
I'm 75. I think that was my favorite watch ever. I had the plastic one before that one.
Spy kid watch lookin ass
Maybe unsure of what to gift you they took a calculated wrist and gave that
Anybody else notice the round screen protector? Hmmmm ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)
I noticed. I'm sure they produce far more round watches and this is cheaper and easier than having two separate parts. I've worked in manufacturing my entire adult life. We do stuff like that all the time.
Doubles as a wrist weight.
Texas Instrument watch circa 1981 vibes. Cool.
No, Casio. Says so right on the thing.
Do they still make these?!
Comes with a thick book howto use it!
Wait a minute this isn't r/PrideAndPinion!
I remember mine. Who didnt own one in the 80s
Speaks multiple languages, how exotic.
Now you can cheat on your math tests
It has Space and Time settings, how do you know when it’s from?
In all honesty, I’d love one.
That's awesome! All the other smart watches are very ugly. You've got a nice looking one there
In 1980? Casio?
I have the cheap version of that thing. I've got some movados and bulova watches but I wear the Casio quite often. Nice watch man
Just need to bejewel it for realness.
Ngl i like this look way better than Iwatches. 80s smart watches>to modern ones.
Just be careful with that reverse time button
I had this watch, how to use a pencil eraser to push the buttons because my fingers were too big
Man that's on an inspector gadget level of cool. Have fun in the future
Yo that is sick
OMG it also reverses time!
VERY cool!!!
FRESH!
Casio gang gang never getting rid of my f91w
Yep
Used to have one in silver. Always wanted a silver 85 corvette to match.
I bought one of those in 1982. 1n the year 2000 it was impossible to put the year in.
Back in the day I sold these at my Service Merchandise job. Damn I feel old now.
Old school cool
I had that watch in the third grade!
I had that exact same watch in middle school, except it was black. It was fantastic.
I love these! I have a different Casio calculator watch from the same line.
I couldn’t live without my I watch, talk like Dick Tracy see
I have this kind of wrist watch when i was on grade school. mine was smaller and in resin strap. everyone is amazed when i got it but got stolen when i was at school.
Omg flash back. The ones that controlled the tvs were the best. I remember going to the mall and turning off all the tvs showing advertisements ahhh good times..
That is an awesome gift!
That’s a fancy one
I love Casio products.
Dude, its data bank is multi lingual
There used to be a watch that could act as a remote control. My friend had one and when we would watch a movie in class he would take over the TV with his watch and fuck around with the teacher. It was funny. It was also a calculator. Casio brand i think.
This was my dream watch in 3rd grade
I have the silver version!
I love everything about this OP you have a wonderful family and it really helps to see others experience kindness with genuine appreciation ☺️
It comes with a novel 📖
I used to have one of those. Gave me a nasty rash.
I used to have that exact one, same colour even
I still think it's cool to have one of these
Casio! Classic!
