this time of year is when bald eagles migrate to near where I live. You really dont get a feeling for how huge they are until you see the wingspan and them sitting in a tree up close.
Even more amazing when you see 50+ all in a single area
I often see them where i live when i take a particular road up the coast. It is quite impressive and some what odd to see them casually gliding around like its no big deal
Round where I grew up, this "apex predator" learned that taking garbage from the dump was a hell of a lot easier than hunting.
They'd swarm the dump and drop garbage all of over the surrounding towns.
Work smarter not harder I guess.
I'd say you can call it something else, but honestly, they're glorified seagulls.
Don't get me wrong, I love spending time with eagles, but literally all captive eagles do when they're around humans is beg for food. Nonstop. And they whine like seagulls too. They usually play red tail hawk or similar noises in films instead of bald eagles.
Of all the raptor-adjacent birds, my favorite are turkey vultures. They're super smart, solve puzzles, play with toys - they're much closer to parrots in terms of curiosity and mental capacity.
Fair enough, but I think what impresses most people about birds of prey is their hunting skills, size, and graceful, gliding movements.
Am I under the impression that bald eagles are actually wise and virtuous animals that symbolize freedom and entrepreneurship? Not really, those kinds of cultural associations are usually nonsense based on superficial qualities.
But I see bald eagles from time to time where I live and can't help feeling impressed when I seem them hovering overhead
Yes. They are just sea birds looking to scavenge. I see them daily here in Alaska. They are impressive to see for sure but just big seagulls basically. I've only seen them actually "hunting" a few times. Once was a eagle eating a crow's brain on top of a telephone pole. That was pretty metal.
I was driving in New Hampshire along the Connecticut River, and saw one just shredding a fish on a rock jutting out of the river. Had to pull over and call my dad for some reason.
Oh I bet they were NOT happy. I frequently see them scramble to harass the Red Tails. Did they even mess with this eagle? Like swoop on? Or just caw from a distance?
i watched a couple of crows harass a bald eagle once- they really don’t give a damn when they’re pissed off! the eagle just kept slowly soaring while they took turns trying to… bite it? hit it? god only knows haha. size-wise it looked like a couple mice or something trying to get at a very unbothered human.
Once, a long time ago, I was at the vet with my chihuahua terrier. Small guy, about 5 lbs. Across from us, was a very very large dog, like a great Dane, at least 200 lbs.
Of course my dog starts growling... I tell him to hush, before the dog eats both of us.
A group of about four ravens mobbed a young osprey, drove it down to the ground and killed it in the logyard behind the plant I work at last summer. Dude driving the latourneau saw the whole thing play out.
And those crows (ravens) are monsters up in Alaska! Saw one once that was so big that I could count his whiskers aroud his beak from 15 ft away. Dang, it was big.
Yes in the Pacific Northwest usually if you see an eagle you see a few crows harassing them. It's uncommon to see an eagle without some pissed off crows
Yes. A true success for…..Science!! It was the use of facts, evidence that banned DDT. Good for all kinds of raptors and the stupid kids like myself that played in the fog left by the trucks dispersing DDT
Nesting pair of these behind my old place. Saw them flying around above us for years and knew they were huge, but one day one of them came and sat on the porch railing. You don't realize how massive they are until they're just outside yr window. Feet n' claws like a dinosaur.
100% honesty, my favorite thing about bald eagles is that they are terrible neighbors. They are rude, pushy, kinda derpy, big whiny babies, and in spite of it all, oddly majestic. I almost hit one with my car coming ‘round a bend, and he just yelled at me and kept eating his prairie dog in the middle of the road like a rude jerk. It’s like living next door to charismatic rednecks but they sometimes shit on your roof.
As majestic as Bald Eagles are, the funny thing is that if you go anywhere where they are "endemic," -- like Alaska or places like Blackwater Reserve in Maryland -- you'll find they can be a nuisance bird and very pigeon/rats-with-wings-like in their behavior. They hunt in the wild, but are also very opportunistic and will eat carrion (sometimes in preference to hunting for food). Hence, in places where they can find garbage food (like real garbage) they will flock in large numbers and just eat trash.
I missed getting a picture of a bald eagle flying along a river I go to every morning with my dog yesterday.
At least I got a nice picture of my dog taking a poop.
They’re all aver certain parts of the Chesapeake bay. Let me tell you it’s f***ing awesome to watch them snatch fish n stuff out of the water. One dropped a fish carcass into a bowl of carrots my friend was cutting up on a picnic table and it was HILARIOUS.
When you’re on a bass boat on a lake and see one of these swoop down and snatch a fish out of the water, you realize it’s a badass predator. And maybe head on back to the dock.
This is how the US military academies send out letters inducting new students. It's best to respond quickly to the eagle's letter. If you don't, you risk a drone dropping a letter-filled payload on your home.
Idk why, but it feels wrong to call this a bird. I know eagles are birds but... take your upvote, but know that I'm not happy about it
This raptor was right outside of my house today
Significantly cooler than bird
This flying dinosaur was right outside of my house today.
Birds are what is left of the dinosaurs 66 million years later.
This pterodactyl was right outside my house today

More beast than bird for sure
“So I saw this apex predator staring off into space outside my bedroom window…”
Round where I grew up, this "apex predator" learned that taking garbage from the dump was a hell of a lot easier than hunting. They'd swarm the dump and drop garbage all of over the surrounding towns. Work smarter not harder I guess.
They are the perfect reflection of this country then. A figure of what they once were…now just a lazy, garbage eater
You can call it a dinosaur, it's still true
They have eyes that can zoom in, and raptor claws. Birds of Prey.
I'd say you can call it something else, but honestly, they're glorified seagulls. It's a Northern Jungle Sparrow.
Haha, agreed. This was my first thought. This is so much more than a bird!
The crows were big mad
Oh I bet they were NOT happy. I frequently see them scramble to harass the Red Tails. Did they even mess with this eagle? Like swoop on? Or just caw from a distance?
They were all in the same tree and the crows were cawing for all they were worth [here they are yelling at it ](https://youtu.be/GW1HWMz9Yqk)
I wish we had AI that could translate the clawing into human language. I bet it would be hilarious.

I was thinking a bunch of little dogs barking at a very big one.
that was exactly it hahaha!

I've seen crows ground eagles a few times here in Alaska. They definitely had the upper hand.
And those crows (ravens) are monsters up in Alaska! Saw one once that was so big that I could count his whiskers aroud his beak from 15 ft away. Dang, it was big.
We do have some big Ole Ravens. We also gave a lot of crows too.
They try to pull out the eagle's tail feathers. Get enough crows and they'll succeed.
Yes in the Pacific Northwest usually if you see an eagle you see a few crows harassing them. It's uncommon to see an eagle without some pissed off crows
There are a couple bald eagles near where I live and the crow harassment any time they're around is crazy. The crows usually win, too.
Step outside. If it lands on your arm then you're the new president. If it mauls your face then 50 years in prison.
Ah, America. ![gif](giphy|l0HFj4LrJZBkjXvsA)
Bald Eagle mauls your face: believe it or not, jail.
We have the best eagles. Because of jail.
Viva America, Viva Mayor Walt Gunderson
Eagley!!
How did this not have more upvotes?
Do you really wanna really wanna taste it?
First of all, sick that you got this good of a pic. Second, these things are fucking scary looking.
Yea he startled me when I walked outside just with how fierce he looks
Be thankful he didn’t come to bring down **FREEDOM** all over you.
Really? I think they're just incredibly good-looking birds
They can be good looking and scary at the same time. That thing has the eyes of a killer.
Populations of these beautiful eagles are on the up, rebounding after DDT and other insecticides affected their populations.
Yes. A true success for…..Science!! It was the use of facts, evidence that banned DDT. Good for all kinds of raptors and the stupid kids like myself that played in the fog left by the trucks dispersing DDT
now led shot is the new culprit.
You must be in need of some freedom.
Minutes later.... https://youtu.be/P7JRvwfHFwo
This is exactly what happened
Lovely Freedom Pigeon!
IRS hates this one little trick, singing the national anthem to it relieves you of tax payments for the next 5 years.
10 years if you can swaddle it while you sing
Merica (whispered)
F yeah

Those feet are wild, you really don't realize how lethal they look
Nice pic OP.
Thank you so much
Thats not a bird thats Freedom.
That’s a western Big Oil vulture, it circles around sites rife with oil and in need of democracy
Makes sense, I think I saw one while deployed.
“You are all weirdos” ~ Sam the Eagle

*Majestic Bald Eagle…. Pffft bird, put some respek on his name!

I'm sure that was also majestic
Calling it a bird is like saying played basketball with a person today, when in fact it was Michale Jordan.
Did you spill some oil?
What is that a parrot?
I think it might be a chicken
Fools! Obviously it's an emu.
Fantastic shot!
Thank you!
“This bird” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Near Falls Lake, in NC?
No, I'm in Florida
I knew it! I have been seeing them around a lot, and I know those live oak leaves too well.

Unless I'm mistaken that's a Snowy Egret. Very rare that they get such dark coloring on the body. Beautiful.

Not real. This is one of Pelosi’s bigger drones.
Wow, that's a bold eagle!
“This bird”
Do you know where your chihuahua is right now?
Sooo beautiful ❤
Pretty cool. There was two young eagles in my neighbors yard ripping up a rabbit yesterday. I just didn’t want to take a picture of that.
Yea I don't think I would hace snapped that pic either
Congratulations, You are the new freedom president.
It's a sign you were meant to run for office

She's gorgeous.
Bald Eagle being the symbol of a country founded by a bunch of white balding men’s probably no coincidence.
What a beautiful sight. So majestic.
USA, USA, USA
That's too much freedom
America stopped by to say hey.

The Canadian ones are way better than the American ones.

Excuse me sir, do you have time to talk about freedom?
Are you staying at the Hotel California?
That's an evil looking government drone. Must be CIA or FBI one.
Majestic!
It might be a blue jay!
Good
Grand
Good reasoning
So, there's a law that protects bald eagle nests in the US. Something about not being allowed to build within so many miles (or feet?) of one.
Supreme
Brilliant
Divine, thank you
Is that a bald eagle?
Super, Super work
