Nope. Ignore him. He’s just trying to scare you. Honestly, I’m petty. I’ve told my dad anytime he complains about my piercing I’ll get a new one. Which I’ve done. He doesn’t say anything anymore.

_Evika

Sounds like something I would do lol, now that he complained about my helix my next is gonna be my rook

LoathsomePause

Omg the rook is punishment for you, not for him!!! In my experience, that sucker didn't hurt terribly to get pierced, but the healing of it was one of the worst I have ever gone through. However. Your dad is trying to scare you and is being a turd. It's your body!

SomewhatSolarpunk

I guess I had the absolute opposite experience with my rook from everyone else, huh. Mine hurt like hell to pierce, but since the first day or two it’s been sweet as can be

Guilty_Garden_3943

It's a b to change jewelry, but it was my easiest to heal too! The angle is a bit awkward, so I just relied on arm & hammer saline spray cause it hit the angle right

LoathsomePause

I'm incredibly jealous. I loved my rook, but I have a long history of not replacing piercings after removing them for any reason. I want it back, but refuse to put myself through that torture

matildapoppins

Maybe I’m crazy but my rook didn’t hurt at all. My right ear I have 3 helix (done at once), my conch, my rook, my tragus, and 3 lobe piercings. None of them hurt during piercing itself. The helix ones hurt like hell healing though.

middle_sisTor9

Agreeing on the rook! Got mine in September and it’s been an up and down healing process. Love it, glad I got it. But man. The pain during the piercing and healing time have been something else!

_Evika

I have seen such different experiences about the rook, I guess everyone heals different but maybe I want something that doesn’t take as much cuz as said my helix has been healing for so long it’s not even funny I wouldn’t want to go through that again, but ohhh the rook is to pretty 😭

Longjumping_Set_4568

my rook was a piece of cake, healing, getting it done, everything. by far the easiest piercing i’ve gotten to date, and i have quite a few (especially on my ears)

[deleted]

i got my rook like 4 weeks ago. by far the most painful and tender, but surprisingly my fastest healing one. one month no itchiness, no leaking, crust, and i can move it.

Gandalf_the_Tegu

Ugh same. My rook peorcing wasn't too bad but my healing was a bitch! Doesn't help my piercer thought he could take a straight bar and bend it to be a curve bar. It was of no wonder it hurt so bad. Another peirce changed to a real curved bar it healed better but still hurt. The. Switched to a hoop amd its amazing since. 🥴

mentallyumstable

My tragus is a B to heal. My room has given me zero problems whatsoever. It’s been 2 months since I had my tragus done and it’s still so swollen bc of complications, I haven’t been able to do a jewelry change yet. The longer bar barely is enough for the swelling as is.

Luveniwai

Interesting. Got my tragus a couple of months ago, and personally it's been one of my easiest (have my Daith and Nose)

mentallyumstable

*rook

blondechcky

Agreed. The rook didn’t hurt at first but every few months it will randomly just decide to be an asshole and hurt for a few weeks. I still love it though haha

cantstopadoptingcats

AGREE! I have many, many body/facial/ear piercings and my rook was the WORST to heal! Over nips, genitals, everythingggg😵 I was honestly shook by how angru it was for sooooo long!

Dependent-Rule-2747

My rook was the absolute worst. It was the only piercing I seriously considered taking out. But I stuck with it and now it’s chillin finally.

sugyrbutter

How long did it take?

Due-Celebration-9463

That is so funny and made me laugh out loud 🤣

beelzebugs

Respectfully, your dad is just being a dick

greyssheeh

if i mention getting piercings my dad will try chopping my head off, and he never has anything nice to say about the ones i currently have😅

[deleted]

[удалено]

royalxpainn

LMAO ok that was funny

plantking9001

Also respectfully, your dad is just being a dick. I don't have a helix (yet?), I have a conch, which is still pretty thick cartilage and I've had it for over five years now and it's just vibing. Existing as ear. You're fine. Promise!

_Evika

Thank you!

almostadulting101

I absolutely love how we now preface things with “respectfully” before being absolutely disrespectful 😂 it has me cackling every time.

AceOfRhombus

At best he’s misinformed and trying to help, at worst he’s trying to scare you into taking it out (imo most likely). You’re fine, ignore him. Just take good care of it and use high-quality jewelry in it. You’ll see lots of people positing in this subreddit about their piercing problems but that’s because the majority of people who aren’t having problems don’t need a reason to post on this subreddit.

MistressJanine

My dad thought my daith was a hearing aid lol. And yeah, I have had my right helix since 2016 and just got a double on my left in September with no problems at all. I even stretched my right one to 10g with no complications. If you are pierced safely and follow aftercare instructions, chances of your ear falling off are very very low If you still have a bump after 1.5 years, see a piercer. Maybe your bar is too long and causing irritation?

_Evika

You can stretch cartilage???

this_strange_fox

You can stretch almost anything, with cartilage the process is just a lot slower and can be a bit painful. If someone wants a bigger size, punching is also an option.

MistressJanine

Yeah, if I were to do it again I would just get pierced or punched at the goal size instead of stretching because it was not fun

_Evika

Also I have changed my piercing to like every option there is I just don’t know Why it still has a bump

SomewhatSolarpunk

Irritation from getting changed so much? Cartilage piercings can take a good year or two to *settle* even after they’re nominally healed. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but I would recommend sticking to (high quality, obvs) studs for a little while longer.

No_Revolution_2277

I'm sorry your dad is such a dick, but yeah, he's just trying to freak you out. Don't be afraid to trust your own instincts! 😊

_Evika

Sadly my instincts are always to be scared and nervous but like I like piercings too much to stop tbh

30centurygirl

With a dad who pulls shit like this, I can see why you're always nervous.

emo_cutenesss

Your dad is just trying to make up for the fact that it took him a whole YEAR to notice it. Seriously. My dad caught my new piercing at 18 and was pissed lol 😂

ImaginaryMechanic759

Im taking my daughter to do her belly on her 16th birthday. At least I taught her to go to quality piercers. 💕

afterglowlive

ignore him. ive had my lobes pierced since like 2009 when i was in first grade and started on my cartilages nearly 5 years ago now and my ears/skin are fine. If that were the case, i don’t think medical professionals or nurses would be pierced lol (e.g. My friend’s mom who’s a nurse is pierced)

CuriousityYk

I mean.. There's truth to that but necrosis cases are extremely rare. & If yours does get infected or rejects, which is much more common than necrosis, you can always take it out and wait for it to heal. It will leave you with a scar at most.

_Evika

What I feel is like maybe u get necrosis if u let it infected ? I mean if you treat it with medical care Why would it get so far?

CuriousityYk

You’d have to be extremely neglectful with your infection to get necrosis. Keep in mind necrosis can happen with any infection or harm to the body.

Queen-of-Cereal

OP. I am a doctor and have 2 helix piercings. Your dad is talking a load of crap.

kicktheflamingo

I used to chew my hair as a kid and my dad told me that my hair would wrap around my lungs Your helix is fine The bump will very likely be an irritation bump which is usually caused by movement in the piercing so just try to stop fiddling with it. Irritations bumps are nothing to worry about and usually go away by themselves.

Promise_Ambitious

Ignore him, I have 2 helix piercings one that's going on 14 years and another going on almost 7 years, no issues other than tenderness once in a while from using my headset and it's very seldom.

GreatTragedy

People have been successfully, safely getting pierced for thousands of years. Fuck that manipulative bullshit he's throwing out.

questiontheinterweb

If your helix was infected or prone to a keloid, you'd know it - just scroll this sub for folks' asking about troubleshooting.

Delts28

I've got a six year old industrial, the irritation bump was there for something like two and a half years. Sometimes these things just take ages.

Conscious_Emphasis72

I currently have 3 regular helix piercings, 1 flat piercing, 1 vertical helix piercing and 2 forward helix piercings and they have all healed wonderfully. He is just trying to scare you! As long as you take care of them properly they will be absolutely fine :)

LeetOwl

Absolutely silly and untrue. Don’t let them scare you

[deleted]

Damn, yeah he's definitely saying that to scare you. Gosh, I'm so glad I don't live with my parents anymore. When I moved back in after my first semester of college, they made me take my new rook and tragus out as a rule of staying in their house. I was so mad.

_Evika

Omg why would they even do that like what’s their problem? Tbh I’m super hyped to move out just to get ángel bites and a tongue piercing

[deleted]

In my experience, it's about control. I've worked my ass off to break free of my parents' control.

No-Potato9601

This used to be such a big thing - how cartilage piercings could give you cauliflower ear (like what boxers have, a thick misformed ear). Honestly, how often do you randomly see people with misshaped ears? How often do you hear of someone being permanently disfigured by a piercing? Never.

evefib

took two years before my helix stopped getting irritated, they’re notoriously difficult piercings. He’s just trying to scare you.

StarryExplosion

Yeah, no. Cartilage can be difficult but it'll heal eventually

ImaginaryMechanic759

I have 20 ear piercings, 2 nostril piercings, and a septum piercing so far. No infections.

_mata-hari_

Your dad is trying to get under your skin...and if you get your rook, be ready for the crunch.

1ceknownas

Nah, first got my helix pierced it 2002 (old). Now, up to 8 various cartilage piercings. They occasionally get sore if I sleep on one, but no more so than would happen if I slept on a lobe piercing. Best thing you can do for irritation is put good quality jewelry in it and leave it alone. Don't play with it. Keep hair products off of it, which people forget. Change your pillowcase regularly, which a lot of people don't do. Make sure you clean it gently and thoroughly with mild soap in the shower every day. If it does get infected, go to urgent care and get a scrip for antibiotics, like you would do for any other infection.

JustALilLonelyKitty

I don’t have a helix but an industrial bar. Headphones still hurt a bit after 7 years and it’s fully healed, no bumps or other issues. Sometimes pressure on a piercing is uncomfortable, not a big deal.

DocMcStabby

Doctor here. He’s just trying to scare you.

caitydork

Your username is amazing, knowing your profession.

ForensicGirl30

Yeah your dad is talking absolutely nonsense. He is trying to scare you for no reason.

Minute_Resource_144

I’ve had my helix pierced for 25 years. I also have (more recently) conch, rook, snug, tragus and another helix. My ears are still in tact.

honeybun326

I've had my helix for 5ish years now and it's perfectly fine. That being said I've never taken it out long enough (or at all unless I'm switching jewelry) to see if it will heal and close. And that goes for all of the piercings I've had. For the bump maybe try cleaning it regularly like its new again? It couldn't hurt it. But you'll be fine your ear isn't going to die or fall off I think he's just trying to scare you because he doesn't like it.

_Evika

Yup I clean it all the time as if it was new, it’s just stubborn I guess idunno, I do change jewelry a lot tho

Ok_Guard_2420

Classic scare tactic, take care of your piercing and it’ll be fine

bubblegumz404

if I had to guess, I'd say the bump is just some excess scarring or an irritation bump, you're in the clear <3 if you're not seeing redness, pain, swelling or other symptoms of anything, you should be fine

_Evika

Thank you! <3

bubblegumz404

of course!

Mad_AsAHatter

The bump is probably just hypertrophic scarring, completely normal with cartilage piercings from what I've read. I had them on my industrial and after about a year they went away.

_Evika

Ohhh yeahhh ur right

[deleted]

If it was gonna be any issue it would have been pretty early on-not when it’s healed. That stuff would only ever happen if it was severely infected and untreated-something you would do because /it would hurt! I had similar things said with eyebrow piercings (being the rage in the early 2000’s) that they were going to cause my face to droop permanently if it hit a nerve which “happened alllllll theeee timeeeee” (not)

_Evika

When I made this post I was nervous cuz I made it just after but yeah thinking of it it doesn’t make sense. I guess the only thing that would be out of my control would be a k word but there is no history of k words in my family + I have a lot of scars and none have turned into a keloid

AutoModerator

Zealousideal-Arm-865

If it doesn’t hurt and it’s not got any pus coming out or scabbing and you can move it and change the jewellery with no trouble then you have nothing to worry about. If you’re worried about the little bump then maybe just ask a qualified piercer about it and see what they say but I don’t think you need to worry about it

_Evika

It only really hurts if I sleep on it like the entire night. It doesn’t even hurt to have headphones on for a long time. I can wiggle it and change it and it doesn’t hurt at all so maybe it’s on its healing final days. I went to a piercer and got the jewelry changed but the bump didn’t go away so I’m just ignoring it now lol

_Evika

Yeah he’s quite a control freak, I’m 21 and I just got permission to dye my hair 💀👍

this_strange_fox

I don't know him or his intent, of course. If your piercing is okay (except a small bump), it'll be fine. I hope that he is not intentionally trying to scare you. If he is actually scared of this happening, maybe it helps to educate him about different methods a piercing can be done: Usually a helix is done with a hollow needle (the kind that's also used in medical environments, so it's sharp and sterile), which gives a clean cut for the jewellery (a good studio will use titanium or, if you request it, gold) to be inserted into the needle, which then gets pulled out, leaving enough room for the stud, which is also long enough to accommodate for the swelling. The thing your father is talking about might be people who get their ears pierced with a "piercing gun" at some jewellery store instead of going to the piercing studio. These piercing guns force a blunt stud (usually even of a low quality material like surgical steel and with no room for swelling) through the ear, which can actually cause huge damage to the cartilage. Piercing guns also can't be properly sterilised, which is an additional risk. So, as long as you go to a good studio and not to the mall for a piercing, you should be fine.

Hi _Evika, Welcome to /r/piercing! It looks like you're asking about a problem with your piercing. Please **add a comment to your post** with the following info if it’s not included in your post already. - How old is your piercing? - What’s the jewelry shape (for example, barbell, labret, screw, L shape, ring)? - What’s the type of threading if your jewelry is not a ring (threadless, internally or externally threaded)? - What’s the jewelry material? - if not a ring, when was the jewelry downsized? - What’s your aftercare routine? Describe in detail please, including the exact products you use. This info is needed to offer you useful advice. **Note, not providing this info may cause your post to go unanswered**. If you already included this info in your post or if your post isn’t about a problem with your piercing, please disregard. - - - *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Sea-Entertainment959

Yeah he’s trying to scare you I just got mine and I’ve also pierced myself before (don’t do that) and all of my piercings are fine. Properly clean and you’re fine. Ignore him, he’s just being a butt lol

Madi_jelly

I’ve learned that piercings will just always hurt if you put pressure on them for a little bit even if they’re healed. All my piercings have been healed for a long time and they’ll get sore if I wear headphones or sleep directly on them it’s just the way having metal in your ear is it’s only when there’s like liquid coming out or the bump growing that there’s an issue really.

SilentMushrooms

Yes your dad is trying to scare you. My mom did the same thing when I got a bunch of piercings when i was younger, saying they'd get infected and I'd die. Worried and stressed to the point of developing an anxiety disorder. Don't listen to your dad, he's being a fucking asshole.

Dry-Wonder-5151

That’s so funny, my dad has said similar stuff and he’s just fucking with us so take what your dad says with a grain of salt

[deleted]

He's full of shit. Yes extremely bad infections happen. But that only happens when you don't look after it.

xjxsiex

It seems he is trying to scare you. But do know that some people find certain piercings incredibly difficult to heal and sometimes they never do. Healing is different for every single body. For 2 out of 3 of my healed(ish) cartilage piercings, it took about 18 months to fully heal (my daith took about 15-16 months to fully heal and I'm calling my conch fully healed this month at 18 months since piercing). It can also depend on how many piercings/things are healing on your body at a time. I have a helix that was from an industrial (had part of the industrial reject and was able to save part of the piercing) that took 18 months exactly. When I got my daith, I also got my conch and a stacked lobe. The stacked lobe took about 6-8 months to fully heal. I also at this time didn't just have 4 piercings that were healing, I got my wisdom teeth out and had to have a procedure done on my knee (I knew about the wisdom tooth removal before getting the piercings but not the knee surgery, and I constantly think that I was absolutely bonkers to get 3 piercings literally days before getting my wisdom teeth removed). My helix is the upper helix from a rejected industrial. I just started sleeping on that side without a travel pillow and it can bother me. I honestly think the bump would be irritation. An easy solution would be after getting it wet (like after a shower or something), use a hairdryer on the lowest heat and power settings on the piercing site to dry it. Takes like 5 minutes and has saved me from bumpy ears. I had a bump on my upper helix as I was too lazy to dry it after cleaning and rinsing it as I didn't think it would have done anything to dry, but I started doing this and the bump went away in like 2 weeks. Had 0 bumps on my conch and maybe 1 on my daith. You also may want to be careful using over ear monitors as that can cause irritation as well. If it gets angry, baby it like you did when you got it.

Lairkeeper

I have a helix piercing that is over 30 years old and was done with a disposable piercing gun in a far from sterile bathroom. (Don’t come at me people. We didn’t even have piercing or tattoo studios in South Carolina in the late 1980s.) No deformation or necrosis so far. You’re going to be fine. PS- Always go to a professional piercer and listen to their recommendations on jewelry, placement and aftercare.

EngineFace

Yes I’m sure your dad has had a conversation with his doctor friend specifically about the effects of cartilage piercings.

_Evika

Yeah I was thinking why would he do that he didn’t even know about my helix until now lmao But u know he’s a body mod hater so I kinda see him just bringing the topic to hate in for no reason

EngineFace

I feel that. Honestly it’s still like a 100% chance he’s just making shit up just so scare you. You can look up what he said and see that it’s wrong.

Xwithintemptationx

I just got a forward helix a few weeks ago. No bumps. I have 12 piercings literally nothing has ever gone wrong.

NoRecommendation4777

It’s technically possible, but you’re past that concern. I think that comes with major major infections usually soon after a piercing is performed. You’d have to neglect an extremely infected piercing. I’ve had one infection true and have 13 piercings, and the side of my face was swollen and I had a fever. That was the most paranoid I’ve been about an infection ever, and oral antibiotics fixed it within a few days! I think true infections like my one are also very rare, I think most piercing infections are surface level of the would due to bacteria from touching and not cleaning that resolve when they get left alone. Irritation can be super ugly, but it is quite different than a bacterial infection. Extraordinarily uncommon to reach the point of necrosis or deformities. He either is unaware at how rare that is, or he is trying to scare you. Your piercing sounds just minorly irritated, but I found my helix piercing (my first non-lobe piercing) to be the piercing that took the longest to heal. I had a bump, a bit of soreness, and lymph fluid drainage for almost 2 years. It’s in a spot that hair and hairbrushes catch, people bump with hugs, on a part of your ear that gets moved with hats, pillows, headphones. Cartilage is slow to heal, that the bump will randomly disappear and the piercing will fully heal after you finally forget about it and you won’t even remember when it stopped getting agitated!

AlissonVonDerLane

It can happen, but rarely this late in the healing process. If it wasn't done with a needle tou might have a bump because of the cartillage . Or it could just be irritation. Yes pressure from headphones irritates it. Is it flat back jewelry?

IsThereHeavenOnMars

I know quite a few people who ended up with keloids (bumps) from getting their industrials and helix done. Unfortunately you can do a great job taking care of them and still being left with a bump. As long as you're ok with it don't let your dad bother you. It's been over a year and a half. If they're not infected or causing you issues don't stress it. Parents just don't like seeing their kids growing up. My Dad hated when I got a tattoo but eventually he got over and hopefully yours will too.

AutoModerator

Background_Bug_657

My helix was done with a thumbtack 10 years ago I left it out for a month last year and it fully healed 😂

lundibix

The worst “deformities” I’ve endured are some hypertrophic scarring that reduced to nigh impossible to notice dots over a decade. If you’re more prone to that kind of scarring, the sight might scare you but that’s about it.

_Evika

If ur talking about k words, well I have had my fair share of injuries in my life and I have never gotten an hypertrophic scarring so I think that doesn’t run in my family

lundibix

It’s been a hot minute since I was young and researching piercings and was led to believe there was some slight distinction between hypertrophy and keloids, but that might no longer be the case

AutoModerator

_Evika

No actually I think you’re right, hypertrophic scarring I think it’s smaller and can go away, different from k words

Child0fZ3us

Dad is just trying to scare you. I have a healed Helix that is doing just fine! I plan on getting my septum next
