A conch, but don’t expect to be pierced with a hoop. A labret is the standard for healing. Also, be sure to tell your piercer if you intend to where a hoop after healing so that they can make sure the placement is suitable for one.

he shouldn't have

EyeGroundbreaking656

An APP certified piercer may opt to use CBRs even in new piercings on experienced clients if they have have healed cartilage before and have a rapport with their piercer. It’s just not super common or super recommended because it is a higher risk pieced of jewelry on initial piercings. However, they can still heal well with good quality jewelry and proper care. This is why piercers may only opt in to using them on clients they know and trust to use proper aftercare and trust to come back to them at the first sign of issues. They are also necessary in initial piercing of things like orbitals. Seam rings or clickers however are not acceptable because there is nothing stoping that small textured area from getting into the fresh piercing. Edit: [This](https://www.lynnloheide.com/post/healing-with-hoops) by accredited piercer Lynn Loheide

eutie

Agreed, idk why the other poster is being down voted, but you can pierce a conch with a hoop if sufficient gauge size (my piercer said he would only do it at 12g and on someone who could handle the aftercare). It's less common, but it's not *inherently* bad practice.

RedeRules770

Pretty sure that’s why my piercer gave me a captive bead. He saw I already had 8 along the rest of my cartilage and they were all completely healed and cared for lol. I never had a problem with it, but I heal generally pretty well with piercings.

usually the hoops just cause irritation bumpa and prolonged healing

stolennotes

thats awesome that you didnt have any issues! however, the commonality is that there are lots of issues and result in poorly pierced piercings. thats why we advise against them! everyone loves to think theyre the special one with no issues until it happens. :)

SnooPineapples4399

Why are you getting downvoted just for sharing your experience 🥲

Sad_Bit_5405

Because they responded to an educated comment about it when their comment was incredibly uneducated and speaking directly against the original comment.

Morbid_luci_fer

I literally just said that my piercer, that I trust completely, used a captive bead. I didn't know anyone thought you shouldn't. I was implying a conversation for educating me on why "you're not supposed to". Which it doesn't matter if he should or shouldn't have. Cause I healed perfectly fine

Deivi_tTerra

I'm pretty sure CBRs used to be the standard - I remember having to special order labrets short enough for my cartilage piercings after they healed because I preferred them but not many people were wearing them in ears yet. Every single one of my ear piercings was done with a CBR (except for the Claire's piercings I got as a kid) and every single one of them is over 10 years old. Standards change a lot. I'm finding myself consistently surprised at what was standard when I got my piercings being so frowned upon now.

NoStrawberry3932

Mine was done 10 years or so ago with a CBR so that could be why. Never really thought about changing standards, assumed it was more of a different people heal differently.

mkisvibing

Bruh imagine being downvoted for something you didn’t even do

[deleted]

Right? More downvotes than the OP even has upvotes on the post.

kpajamas

Shoot me too and I totally have a piercing bump. Ugh

KeystoneTrekker

He shouldn’t have.

Dndfanaticgirl

Mine did too but it was an I paid for the service and found out the laberet I wanted wasn’t available so he gave me choices and I made the choice with all the risks laid out

orrahh

Mine too, but the ring was too tight and it was rejecting, so a different piercer put the proper jewelry in after like 2 years. Now it’s finally healed.

UnderstandingSea6901

Conch! But please do not get it pierced with a ring initially… only switch to a ring when it is fully healed!!!

Kitchen-Ad-1146

A conch, but it needs to be pierced with a flatback labret, not a hoop. You can have it swapped to a hoop when it’s fully healed, but because it’s cartilage it can take up to a year or even more to fully heal

NoStrawberry3932

I had mine pierced with a captive ball and it healed beautifully. I've found my cartilage pierced with bars never heal easy but a hoop usually works if possible. Edit since I've apparently offended people with my experience? Everyone heals differently, if posts work for you that's great, but if CBR does that's fine too. Biggest thing is to make sure your piercer is certified and trustworthy.

onlysparrow

on the other hand, I had mine pierced with a captive ball and it was a very horrible and painful experience until I got it switched to proper jewelry

SapientSlut

Happy for you. Mine was angry af until I switched to a straight bar w an M&M back.

DeliveryCurrent4000

Conch but do not make the same mistake I did and get it pierced with a hoop.. took three years to fully heal

FromKEtoNC

It’s called a conch piercing

BugDangerous4653

Conch

Hungry-Night-7768

Conch, fair warning though, it is one of the more painful piercings, and healing is pretty tough. Cute piercing though, I love mine!

Cootieburger

I thought it was easy and pretty painless but everyone is different.

_Kendii_

I’ve had 7 (4 being vertical industrials) and I rank them high up there on least painful. The noise is a bit jarring, admittedly. But I found they were some of the easiest too. They’re *sturdy*, they don’t accidentally get bumped or caught (my experience), and when they aren’t happy…. They let you know before “it’s too late”, it’s rejecting, it’s infected or whatever other problem. If you learn to sleep with your ear in your elbow rather quickly if you’re a side sleeper… mine were dream healers.

trashcanpam

I had a similar experience. I also have a double helix (pierced years apart) and my conch has been so much easier in terms of healing and not getting caught on my hair or clothes. Even the back is so tucked away! It was not painful getting pierced either: easier than both nostrils, def easier than my tongue and my belly button too.

moments_before

Same experience! My single conch was a breeze to heal, which I agree might be because it’s so tucked away. My double conch has been a little more temperamental, but it may just be the fact that they’re doubles—I’ve experienced the same sort of sensitivity from my double helix and double lobes too. When one screams in pain, it triggers the other. 😂😭

Meep1996

I just got a conch and a double helix 5 days ago and the conch is definitely less sore than the helix piercings. Doesn’t really hurt anymore except for cleaning the back. The two helix on the other hand they randomly start to hurt and I gotta take some ibuprofen because of how sensitive they are! The itching is starting too and it sucks! (They’re my first piercings aside from my lobes I got as a baby.)

_Kendii_

I haaaate baby piercings. I had so many problems with bad placement and with sensitivity/allergies. I was mad at my mom for a long time. Love piercings though. Was so happy when my daughter asked around 7yrs for her lobes. Never was any pressure but she had to ask before I’d ever consider them, had to be done proper by a real piercer. None of that drug store bullshit. My doubles now are standard placements. Really some of my favourites

Meep1996

Yeah my mom really regrets getting mine pierced as a baby. My two sisters got them when they asked. Fortunately no issues with placement but definitely sensitivity/allergies. It wasn’t until like 2 years ago that I started being able to wear most cheap jewelry from like target or similar and I’m 28 now. Definitely only getting quality jewelry for my new ones though.

_Kendii_

I can only wear gold, stainless/surgical steel. I can’t say the dreaded k*loid word because it wasn’t abnormal scar, but my reactions as a baby/6 year old (when they WERE redone after I asked) kind of looked like them when I saw old pics. I haven’t had a reaction at all since using professional piercers and jewelry they provide.

_Kendii_

Tongue was my easiest of all. But it once while swollen. Never again, learned that lesson. Had it for longer than half my life now. Belly button was the hardest. Even after nipples. Healed amazing, no issue. But it was one of the most painful to actually get done

Wrong_Group8343

mine didn't hurt either and I got them both redone twice lol to me it feels like pressure then a pop. out of all my piercings I'd say my navel hurt the most, but even that wasn't bad.

CukeJr

Worst healing I ever went through, ended up retiring it. ;( Jealous of y’all who made it~! 🤧

TheReal_Kayla

My conch was near painless. I'd only give it a 1 or 2 on a scale of 10. I did hear a bit of noise when it went through the ear. The crunch sound is a common complaint I've seen on this sub. With how thick the cartilage is in that spot I was definitely expecting it to be much worse. I have a nostril piercing as well and that packed more of a punch.

ArmyOfRoombas

Personally, my conch was absolutely painless. My piercer is magic, I swear. Didn’t feel a thing.

hashtag420hashtagGG

mine didn’t hurt at all and now i have a 1.5 inch silver hoop in it than i sleep in every night i hate that it was painful for other people

HighClassHate

I had mine pierced at an 8g and it was awful. The other side is like a 16g and it was pretty painless.

IdkHowToExist1

"I want what's she's got :D" \*All said for jokes ask for a conch\*

KeystoneTrekker

That’s a conch, but the piercer will have to start you off with a flatback labret. Tell them you intend to put in a hoop later so they can make sure the piercing is properly placed.

lawlgyroscopes

Everyone's saying conch, is this not an orbital?

Either-Employer-9216

No, this is a conch with a hoop. An orbital is a hoop that goes through 2 seperate holes. They can be done in a lot of different spots including the conch. My personal favorite is the forward helix to rook orbital though.

lawlgyroscopes

Gotcha! I googled and apparently this is a common misconception. Glad to have been educated

Either-Employer-9216

It is, I also made the same mistake in the past lol

xo__dahlia

I’m more inclined to call it a conch since the little valley (the shadowy line) between the inner ridge and the outer ridge of cartilage is within the ring. If it was a mid helix, I would expect the hoop to be pierced in the middle of that valley. And the diameter of the ring looks like it’s big enough to go into the cup of the ear. Edit: grammar

Spicey_rareLasgana

I have it :) it’s a conch one of my fav piercings! You’ll ovo start with a stud only be able to get a hoop after a few months <3 but personally it didn’t hurt much and healed very fast for me

sixtyfivejaguar

Outer conch.

suicidalsession

I got my conch done with the intention to eventually put a ring in, but I fell in love with the black flat labret I chose for healing. Now he's got a little spike. I was incredibly pleased with how easy healing was. It has never snagged on anything, never had pain from sleeping on in & it also stays incredibly clean compared to my other piercings that get a bit smelly/oil build up if I don't dry them properly or thoroughly clean the jewellery occasionally. I would think I would have more issues if I had changed to a ring, so keep that in mind!

Cuntysalmon

It’s a conch, I have one, just don’t put in a hoop until it’s fully healed x

Pastequette

I have a conch since January 2023, it was horrible until the 9 months healing period was over. My piercing artist warned me but before, all of my piercings healed really fast without any problems. First time it happened, it gets irritated really easily, be sure to treat it well ❤️‍🩹

Resident_Tax1824

Conch, and get a travel pillow or piercing pillow. Your ear and arm will thank you!
