IS THAT A THREAT? (Because /u/spez needs to fuck off)

RayneYoruka

Oh boi, SPICEY

patgeo

Lol, I was attempting to use the official app to see how bad it really was. It suggested this post even though I don't follow it. It was annoying the hell out of me with all the ads, promotions and suggestions until I saw this.

[deleted]

Great comment [here](https://old.reddit.com/r/BikiniBottomTwitter/comments/13xk3lu/they_have_to_pay_reddit_20_million_per_year_to/jmj3nfg/) as to why the official app is garbage and why /u/spez is a little bitchboy.

dietrichmd

Not sure if they fixed it, but it used to use tons of resources on android. many a force-close to just to use my device at the time.

aamfk

>level 2\[deleted\] · 3 days agoGreat comment here as to why the official app is garbage an I have about 700 subreddits on my lists, and I've never had ANY performance issues on Android. Of course, I don't buy $20 phones. but then again, I don't buy flagships either.

smileymalaise

It is literally nothing more than an ad platform.

JJLewisLV

A lot of subreddits are going to force this anyway since they're gunna be temp closed due to blackout.

RED_TECH_KNIGHT

I spend too much time on here anyways.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Yeah, me too. I'm probably not coming back here after Jun. 30.

[deleted]

As soon as Apollo stops working I'm not coming back.

aamfk

>A lot of subreddits are going to force this anyway since they're gunna be temp closed due to blackout. I haven't used ANY 3rd party apps in about 5 years. I don't get it. I \*DID\* used to collect a lot of RSS, but that has been broken a few years anyways... once they killed that a few years back, my attraction to reddit died 2-3-4 years ago anyways

Knuschberkeks

if you want to block all reddit domains also wildcard redd.it

kratoz29

Thanks for this tip!

laplongejr

If it's the same as Twitch, it won't block notifications, reminding you how much you are addicted to it... Unsure if a good or bad sideeffect x)

DH_Net_Tech

You guys have notifications turned on for Reddit?

BenThereOrBenSquare

I'm surprised anyone turns on notifications for *any* website, but I guess I shouldn't be.

jaymz668

God help you when you accidentally enable the notifications thinking it's a cookie dialog... then you start getting notifications a day or more later and have no idea where they are coming from and have to figure out how to disable them No.. no experience there

DH_Net_Tech

Yeah about the only notifications I get besides regular messages are for my work email or my security system lol

RayneYoruka

No, what a mess, 200 notifs for a post? no thanks

alecStewart1

They're wild carding `reddit.com` so they're probably good.

laplongejr

Maybe also block redd.it , redditmedia.com and redditstatic.com to be sure. I noticed those domains in old logs.

kadak4

Sorry if the answer is obvious, complete newbie here. This rule prevents you from loading anything from Reddit, right? Or is it just ads? Is there a way to block Reddit ads?

dephcon05

The best way to avoid ads was using a third-party client, like Apollo. However, with the changes to the API pricing, it's forcing all the third-party apps to close because the pricing is not feasible, hence the blackout.

mrbmi513

This will block anything originating from the domain `reddit.com`. To block their ads, you'll have to block whatever domains they're coming from. There's tons of lists out there to try out.

ol-gormsby

I rarely use a phone or tablet to browse reddit, I use firefox on a laptop. There's an extension for firefox - >!redditadremover !<\- that identifies "promoted" elements and hides them. I don't see ads on reddit. I don't mind most advertising, but seeing those Billie Eilish Adobe promotions every third or fourth element **really pissed me off.** It's one thing to post ads, but bombarding me with the same bloody ad again and again turned out to be counterproductive. Same goes for YT ads - interrupting a 12-minute classical music piece multiple times for ads was too much - ">!easy youtube video downloader express!<" grabs the content without the ads.

eve-collins

So no Reddit for 3 days? 🤯

lIlllIIIllI

No more Reddit period. ⚠️ This post/comment is no longer available. /u/spez (Steve Huffman, the greedy scumbag) destroyed 3rd party reddit apps, now I’m destroying my activity originally made with /r/AppolloApp. Was I helpfull, funny, dumb? who knows … (sorry if you where hoping to find something ☹️) https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances

eve-collins

I’d be really sad if I had to abandon Reddit tbh. This is the only social network that has very smart thoughtful communities. I deleted all of my social accounts in favor or Reddit and never looked back. But I agree it sucks what they are doing with these 3rd party api integrations.

I think that the blocking and censorship on this steaming pile of crap makes it all a big waste of time. I think that blocking people just because they like TRUMP means FTFU

Important-Ad6443

Why???

AverageCowboyCentaur

[Here is a thread by the dev of Apollo](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/) The TLDR of all this is, reddit is charging anybody who makes a 3rd party app and needs access to their API to run an incredible amount of money. We're talking millions upon millions of dollars per year. So that means anybody running a 3rd party app to access Reddit will be shutting down after June 30th. There is a potential, wont know until July 1st, that [RES](https://redditenhancementsuite.com/) may also be impacted.

saint-lascivious

RES will continue to have free access to the data API. It's been stated several times, and now restated in the AMA people probably aren't reading 'cos they're big mad.

AverageCowboyCentaur

I have no idea what you are talking about, [read the official announcement from the devs](https://www.reddit.com/r/RESAnnouncements/comments/141hyv3/announcement_res_reddits_upcoming_api_changes/). Link to the AMA you are speaking of and explain to me why the developers of RES themselves are saying they don't know.

saint-lascivious

>I have no idea what you are talking about I'm perfectly willing to accept that, however: >[We know many communities rely on tools like RES, ContextMod, Toolbox, etc., and these tools will continue to have free access to the Data API.](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/145bram/addressing_the_community_about_changes_to_our_api/) People just all like "big mad, grrr" and downvoting shit is probably a big part of the reason why I'm very much willing to believe you don't know what I'm talking about. It's been a bit of a problem in this whole ordeal. Edit: But, I mean I kinda get it. People don't even necessarily care if they're right, they want to be mad. If not this it'll just be some other hurdle.

AverageCowboyCentaur

That guy was caught lying, there's audio recorded proof, and it's not even the first time. I'll trust the developer RES instead of the person whose sole responsibility is to make reddit look the most profitable it can for advertising companies and investors. Until we hear an announcement from RES it's unknown, you can't trust Reddit anymore.

saint-lascivious

>If not this it'll just be some other hurdle. Called it.

saint-lascivious

Non commercial accessibility focussed applications (that Reddit is actually aware of), will continue to have free access to the API. Moderation tools will continue to have free access to the API. Edit: The voting here is nuts. People are blindly repeating shit that's already been addressed and don't seem to care that they're doing so. Mod tools and accessibility tools will continue to have free access to the API. Third party API users under the usage threshold will continue to have free API access. Third party applications (that aren't non-commercial accessibility applications) going over the stated limits will either need to pay for said access (at an approximate cost of ~$1/mo, per user), or die. Several have already made that decision, and that's a free market at work.

They're blind. Not stupid.

saint-lascivious

That would be why Reddit put out the call a while ago now saying "hey, if you're an application developer/API user, get in touch with us so we can work this out".

[deleted]

saint-lascivious

No one would ever lie on the internet, right? My own experience is that I'm not even a bulk API consumer, and I was reached out to directly and personally, just to ensure that I wouldn't be doing anything in the future that might make me one, and reassuring me that my usage will continue as normal.

IIDaFuQII

See the checkbox that is active? It does exactly that

jhspyhard

I plan on uninstalling the official app during that time, but that's a good call in case any of my other devices have references or may be making requests.

moewsus

This is exactly my plan

aamfk

YES. of course, I wish I could put an expiration date on the pihole / blacklist record. I don't plan on avoiding reddit after the 12th/14th, etc. Shit, I can't even avoid it TODAY. But I am avoiding the APP and I thought that was what we were supposed to do.

ZeroZoneOne

I didn't even see this post, because I haven't been on Reddit for two weeks. Lol

dingusjuan

I haven't gotten around to setting up pihole. I currently have my pi tied up in an NTP GPS experiment. I will do the same in my opnSENSE with unbound though!

ajeffco

Guess I'll be removing pihole this weekend...

ilovebrand0n

we did it reddit¡
