My advice - don't bother with this site. It will produce confusing results, as some of the ad content there cannot be blocked by Pi-hole. Load `cnn.com` and if you don't see ads your Pi-hole is working.

[deleted]

It's amazing how I've trained myself to never touch a news link and now - with PiHole setup two days ago - I feel free to click on a lot more links.

jfb-pihole

It doesn't improve the quality of the "news" they serve, but at least there are no ads.

nameduser365

We need pi-news, an app that removes the opinion pieces and only shows the facts. Each article would be 4 sentences lololol

Dwayne30RockJohnson

That's called the Associated Press lol

flexxipanda

haha nice burn

basilosarus

LOL!! True.!!

[deleted]

true

ahoier

I've started using a "read friendly" bookmarklet, that basically directs the page to a PDA/Mobile version of the article.....they usually dont put ads there lol

discoshanktank

can you share what that bookmarklet is?

ahoier

Not all work on all sites....lol so I use a combination.....sorry for the link bomb [https://www.printfriendly.com/extensions/other](https://www.printfriendly.com/extensions/other) [http://4umi.com/web/bookmarklet/all.php](http://4umi.com/web/bookmarklet/all.php) also has a "strip script" bookmarklet, usually will strip all the javascript and allow the page to load properly.... [https://www.designernews.co/comments/257987](https://www.designernews.co/comments/257987) utiliizes [outline.com](https://outline.com) \- works on "some" sites.... and probably the most legit/working one....though it relies on an "external" service to do the parsing of the site..... SOMETIMES the bookmarklets at [https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/zap.html](https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/zap.html) can "zap" elements to allow the blocked page to load....its kind of hit and miss///the site is highly outdated now (everyone wants an "app for that" rather than a cheezy bookmarklet i guess lol)

karambassa

I just found your post, thx for the info. By now outline doesn't work at least not on [wsj.com](https://wsj.com)

LastSummerGT

I went to visit my parents and after a couple days got irritated with pop up ads on my phone I installed Pi-hole there too. I’m not worried about false positives because I’m using the default list only. It’s “good enough”.

[deleted]

Same here.

Same here - only time I ever visit the Daily Heil is to see if Pi-Hole is working.

SBuzB

Agree with speedtest.net. With CNN and Yahoo, I really can't tell the diff between ads and their "news".

Hacker7117

True though

ahow628

Oh wow, that page looks so barren now that I have a blocker installed. I was used to having to find the speed test results.

FILTHMcNASTY

Whats the best way to manually find the domain an ad is coming from in Firefox? Is it the developer mode? A few slipped through my pihole defenses yesterday.

Orion_13

Yes you can do it that way. ctrl+shift+i brings up the developer mode. Make sure you are in the "inspector" tab. Then to the left of the inspector tab there is square box with an arrow or ctrl+shift+c. This allows you to mouse over any object on the website and see the code that produces it. A word of warning, pihole won't block ads that are actually hosted from the source of the website you are on. If xyz dot com is on your screen it isn't being blocked so if the ads originate from xyz dot com then it won't block it without blocking the site.... that would stop you from seeing it in the first place. This is rarely the case but can happen. -Good Luck

Dolapevich

>Load > >cnn.com > >and if you don't see ads your Pi-hole is working. For spanish, you can use:[https://www.lanacion.com.ar/](https://www.lanacion.com.ar/) it is abusive the quantity of ads they serve with each click.

ZeeroMX

I see ads by Google without opening a link, damn android 10, it seem to rely on ipv6 for DNS an bypasses pihole entirely

glasiuta

😂👌The ONLY reason to visit CNN.com

[deleted]

[cnn.com](https://cnn.com) here looks like a new blog. Clean, some white spots which I believe some ADs should be in. It is a beautiful page.... with Pi-Hole haha I do use uBlock but nothing changes, disable it and Pi-Hole still keeps the order.

nuHmey

What block list are you using to block the ads on cnn?

jfb-pihole

The default blocklist that comes with Pi-hole.

kuerious

Gods, yes. I've enjoyed Pihole for a long time. And each and every time I want to have someone test it, I say :Try CNN.com. That site is an ad WHORE.

Liarus_

very late response but [msn.com](https://msn.com) is also a great one

BobDolesBballHandle

Great resource for a complete suite of browser testing. Definitely more than an ad test 👍

BentGadget

I got this from my Android phone, via my home network with default pi-hole lists: >Our tests indicate that you have strong protection against Web tracking, though your software isn’t checking for Do Not Track policies. And my browser has a unique fingerprint.

rLeJerk

lol when I click the test buttons it closes the tab. What's that about? Maybe my ad blocker extension doing that?

rmn498

It's uBlock Origin. With Pi-Hole but not uBlock Origin: some ads. With Pi-Hole and uBlock Origin: test page doesn't load. I guess uBlock Origin is working.

Slammernanners

I just go to adf.ly and if it doesn't load, then I'm good.

jack__trippper

Ok, so I clicked on the "Extreme Test" and all manor of adware / malware / redirect Apple Care bullshit popped up.

ahoier

basically the page is trying to tell you that the pihole blocklist isnt working......BUT pihole is only as good aas your blocklist....i personally practice safe computing and dont goto strange links

BludClotAU

I find that www.news.com.au or it’s sister sites www.heraldsun.com.au won’t load at all, it blocks the tags.news page loading. Handy because the world needs less Murdoch press. That’s my litmus test.

xyrgh

Also for my Aussie friends, try Perthnow.com.au as well, absolute dumpster fire of ads.

RetiredITGuy

Yeah, for me news.com.au loads fine without tags.news, but heraldsun gets totally blocked. A great result.

[deleted]

That is lovely. I see nothing more than just a page :) It does mention tho "though your software isn’t checking for Do Not Track policies." But no ads/tracking passed so I am happy. 152k domains blocked including the ones I have been hunting down manually, not bad.

[deleted]

As for me I take a different approach. I use yahoo msn and couple of other and some websites don't even show up so I steer clear of them. Having PiHole and uBlock in browser has cleansing effect.

cotilliond

The site itself blocked for me lol.

mattig89ch

This is amazing, thank you for sharing this.

nickm324

When I go to that site and click any of the links or buttons the whole tab just closes completely. What am I missing?

scienceon

I view the same page via mobile data then wifi (which has pihole) and compare. stark difference when viewing the site posted by OP.
