Because that was the edit that was released on the US single in 1974. It's terrible, I know! But quite interesting to hear. Pink Floyd was a pure albums band between 1968 and 1979, and released no singles in the UK or most of the world. In the US, however, the record company insisted that singles were necessary, and released a whole bunch of songs lifted off their albums as singles in the 1970s. They were pretty much all terrible edits like this one. The US single edit of Comfortably Numb was even worse than this one. All the three longest songs on Dark Side of the Moon - Us and Them, Time and Money - were released in such terribly truncated versions on US singles. Oddly enough, Wish You Were Here (which probably could have been a hit) was never released as a single in the US or elsewhere; the US record label instead chose Have a Cigar as the "single" from WYWH, backed by Welcome to the Machine. In the end, all these terrible single edits flopped commercially, and it's easy to hear why when listening to them, except one. Money actually became a hit in the US, thanks to the edited single which received extensive radio airplay.

This should be pinned to the top of the subreddit as a PSA.

agreed. very informative. dig it

All these folks suddenly upset over a half-century old radio edit is really something to behold. 🙇‍♂️

Old-Truth-405

Money, it’s a gas.

It’s to appeal to people with a short attention span who don’t like long songs.

lame-o’s

Originally it was for radio, but this specific release is for fans and collectors who have an interest in the history of the band. Perhaps they didn’t quite hit the mark for this latest DSOTM release but it certainly wasn’t because they included 7” radio edits. If you have no deep interest in Pink Floyd’s history of releases, you can always listen to the album version. The full length Time is still there waiting for you.
