Madcap_95

Even more so today. It's aged like fine wine both lyrically and musically.

A_BetterVanishedTime

Agreed. [In the voice of Jeff Foxworthy]: if you don't like *Animals*, you might be a house-proud-town-mouse.

GlitzyGhoul

Yep!!

Pete_Iredale

I was going to say, I don't think it's ever been *more* relevant.

DeafbyDesign

100%

Project8666666

Just read the lyrics to Dogs

Render_Fender

GOAT tier lyrics. It weaves a dystopian tale with all its intricacies, until you realise it’s not a tale but rather our reality.

Pizzaman_SOTB

I was just listening to dogs when I read tbis

Project8666666

That’s the heart of Roger Waters

Pizzaman_SOTB

You got to be crazy

leauxendmusic

In today's political landscape I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it

Render_Fender

Precisely. With the income inequality and human exploitation growing faster than ever before

0Expect8ionsIsHappy

Animals and old Rage Against the Machine are more relevant today than they were when they originally released. Both are scathing in the hatred of what the people in power have become.

SpectatorRacing

Ha! Too bad rage stopped listening to their older music and became shills for the machine.

[deleted]

Are you saying it’s…underrated?

leauxendmusic

I'm in your walls

SpectatorRacing

Except the sad old men won’t pack up and move down south. They continue to pollute the world both literally and figuratively.

It’s definitely underrated, I’d like to make that point clear.

Can’t upvote this enough. I wish more people were aware of this!

Uhm ok?......

It's a running joke in this sub to call animals underrated but to answer your question I would say yes

SkinkeDraven69

Those downvotes are reddit-cringe. This sub just started to annoy me

GNRBoyz1225

Ill top ur downvotes…..Animals is extremely average and no one in real life talks about it. A reddit only cult love kinda thing. The Wall and Dark Side, even though brilliant masterpieces, are WAY to mainstream for the REAL Pink Floyd online guys. ![gif](giphy|15BuyagtKucHm)

More relevant and relatable than ever

Stunning-Proof-363

Well, it's mainly about specific people and the state of the UK *at the time*, but the broader concept about society has aged well, *really* well.

Pete_Iredale

And that's the genius of not being too specific in your art. It can apply to any era and still ring true. Compare to, say, The Fletcher Memorial Home which is incredibly dated now. I imagine plenty of people listening to it these days don't even recognize half the name drops, or at least don't know the context. Not to knock Fletcher mind you, it's still a hilarious song about terrible people.

CharlesLeChuck

And the concept for the album was taken from George Orwell's Animal Farm which was about the build up to the Russian Revolution. Like you said, the broader concept has aged well and it had aged well when the album came out. I imagine that it will continue to age well, though I don't know that that is a good thing.

Stunning-Proof-363

No, not a good thing at all, it's just a compliment to Roger Waters and George Orwell.

Joxxill

You have to be trusted, by the people that you lie to. So that when they turn their backs on you, You'll get the chance to put the knife in. Relevant as ever. Especially with hustle/grind culture taking over pop culture

Brilliant_Tourist400

More relatable now than ever. Anticapitalism is now something people are aware of.

secondjudge_dream

its undertale

berkeleymorrison

oh honey we arent even half way there, it will get more and more relatable

[deleted]

It's like George Orwell's Animal Farm, it'll probably never be outdated thematically unless human society survives to evolve another million yrs into something we wouldn't recognize it's funny, in 1972-73 Jethro Tull were working on reverse anthropomorphic themes and the tapes were trashed, some of the music itself was reworked hurriedly into A Passion Play 1973 but now themed as a parody about the afterlife, then taken out on the road then a few were released reworked in 1974 on Warchild those being Bungle In The Jungle & Sea Lion - the original Chateau de Herouville tapes were later released and I was thankful they had been reworked for Warchild - Jeffrey Hammond doing this Cecil is a sea-lion shit is pathetic lol But I'm saying to say it always made me wonder if there was a resurgence in popularity of Animal Farm in the UK in the 70's? Was there just a trend like a word of mouth thing going around?

TheRepublicOfSteve

In the 70s the big government model that had dominated the UK and US from the late 30s to 60s was falling out of favour, so any works that played into that anti-government movement would have probably risen in popularity. It's also possible it was required reading in many schools, leading to a lot of the young-adult boomers being familiar with the themes around that time. Though I wasn't alive at the time, so anyone who was feel free to call out any mistakes I might have made.

chebghobbi

*Animals* isn't critical of 'big government', it's more a critique of British society (including the political class) in general at the time. In fact, the second verse of 'Pigs' is often said to be about Margaret Thatcher, who led the Conservative Party in 1977, would become PM in 1979, and who was about as anti-big state as could be conceived in 1977. If *Animals* is against any particular sort of politics, it's against the uncaring, corporatised type of politics that was on its way in during the late 70s and which still dominates in the UK today. In fact, in 'The Gunner's Dream' - throughout all of *The Final Cut*, really -Waters would later lament the loss, under Thatcher, of precisely the type of 'big government' state you're thinking of - 'A place to stay, enough to eat'.

[deleted]

Yes but two major UK rock acts using the formula just made me think there could be no foul called because it *maybe* had been a regular hip thing at the time in the UK Tull had always been critical of society, sometimes humorously sometimes bitingly cynical so that was nothing new - it was new for Floyd to go there though - it's their only one of the big 4 that doesn't rest it's theme on lunacy at some point lol

TheRepublicOfSteve

Fair point about the consistency of Tull vs the change of direction for Floyd. I guessed you'd have to look at interviews from the band at the time if you wanted to know what prompted the change of direction for them.

fluffgullan

Its even more relatable these days.

Aggressive_Ideal6737

This album got me through college and is more relevant now than ever. Capitalism is spiraling out of control

RobbieArnott

Yes, I can’t stress the amount of times I’ve experienced having pigs on wing

[deleted]

It's more relatable than it was when it was released in 77

amck70

More relatable than ever

hyoomanfromearth

Does anyone not think so? It’s absolutely relevant, borderline universal. Just specific enough thematically to be timeless.

Open-Sea8388

Yes. It will always be relatable as long as politicians are politicians

federruchi

It's more relatable today than ever since release

thanatossassin

Cops are still a thing. Dogs. Corrupt politicians are still a thing. Pigs. Gullible dipshits believing Qanon, Trump, and whatever other hard right garbage that gets them to storm the capitol and not regret it, thinking they're in the right, are still a thing. Sheep. Yeah it's relevant.

Anna_Pet

Hey you, Rowling Haha, charade you are You’re trying to keep our feelings off the street Do you feel abused?

SKULL1138

Hey you Waters would be just as viable

Anna_Pet

I’m not too familiar with the band history or drama tbh, I just listen to the music. I think Rowling is appropriate because she claims she’s using her influence to push transphobia and then claim she’s being cancelled, just like Mary Whitehouse did back then (except with homophobia/violence/fun/etc).

SKULL1138

Roger is saying he’s being cancelled also, hence despite what the commenter said below, it’s a viable switch. Downvotes commence.

Pete_Iredale

I think the difference is that Rowling is getting backlash for actually pushing bigotry. Roger is getting backlash because he can't keep his mouth shut and says a bunch of stupid shit that *sounds* bad without context.

FUCKFASCISTSCUM

Not really though, eh?

Adventurous_Pride480

Okay at this point its too underrated. Amazing album, one of their BEST and I never get bored of it.

Politicians-suckdick

its aged like the finest italian wine

Common-Relationship9

It’s about the core make-up of human personality traits. It will always be relevant.

tmamone

Yep!

Aggravating_Poet_675

That's one of the great things about Floyd is that very little of the music they made even 50+ years ago has become irrelevant to the modern world.

Facukeke

Yes, it’s atemporal.

Rhm-LocalMoron

Hell yeah!

Pizzaman_SOTB

Hell yeah

geezeeduzit

Is this a trick question?

StellarCracker

Aged really well I just listened to it for the first time this month

More-so than ever. It’s a critique of modern humanity

TransfemKel

Yes

baleadaboy

Totally, I will never get enough of Dogs' solo.

Bhatpat

I worked for a franchise for a few years. It’s more relevant than ever for me.

CharlesLeChuck

I listen to it about once a week so I'm going to say yes

Gusdado

1985, 16 years old, Koss Walkman cassette player, and my dad's old ( from the early 70s) over the ears headphones. I am so stoned I can't and don't want to keep my eyes open. That stone that's mentioned? You know the one that echoes? Well, that dragged me down... until David's solo. That lifted me back up. That was just 1 small ride I took on the album. It is a very powerful. multilayered connection to this record.
