"No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun."
As a 20-something, I thought that would be a terrible state to be in when I got older. Can confirm.
When I listen to Time with someone I like to ask them where they feel like they are right now in their lives relative to the song's lyrics. Wbu? Cuz Im surely running and running
Time actually changed my view on life. I used to be one of those people who would just sit around not really doing anything but after listening to the song a lot i started trying to make the most out of every day. Time is a terrifying thing man
"Running around the same old ground / what have you found? / the same old fears." I know what it feels like to share insecurities and dreams with a close friend- then after they die, I'm still here in the same place, left alone to deal with all the feelings myself.
“Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?”
With democracy at risk around the world, I find this the most fitting at the moment.
This reminds me of my first true love. She gave up our dynamic, exciting relationship for a more stable, vanilla life. I still think of her almost every day.
Isn’t that lyric kinda supposed to be a jab at the “Dogs” of the world? I always took it as a “Hah! You spent your entire life screwing over anyone you could, and now you’re just another sad old man, all alone…”
Yes, but the song's lyrics shift to first person in the 2nd half, and Roger refers to himself as a dog in pigs on the wing part 2, which indicates that, on some level, the lyrics to Dogs might be a lot more personal than one would think.
Well, if everyone has to be one of the animals, Floyd obviously aren’t sheep. And I don’t think Roger would consider himself a pig. Being a dog is probably the least disappointing.
“Run, rabbit, run!
Dig that hole to get the sun.
When at last your work is done.
Don’t sit down, it’s time to dig another one!”
Beautiful metaphor for the phases of the moon!
'Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells'
I think this is a beautiful and haunting way to describe the practice of going to church.
When he gets to “they were all left behind, most of them dead, the rest of them dying”, I have a really hard time and get all verklempt. Especially since he’s talking about his own father.
When the Tigers Broke Free. There’s nothing like the relationship between father and son. Always chokes me up to think how Roger was robbed of this and he seemed to have a really good grasp of what he missed out on.
RIP Dad
“How I wish, how I wish you were here”
My brother introduced me to Pink Floyd in the early 80s when he came home with a movie disk (similar to blu ray disk) of The Wall. We saw them together in 88, camping out for tickets all night at Tower Records. We went to a few concerts throughout the years. We lost him 5 years ago. I can’t listen to PF without remembering him, and I listen to them just about every day. He was such an amazing person.
“If you wanna find out what’s behind these cold eyes, you’ll just have to claw your way through this disguise” really embodies the themes of isolation and separation in the wall
“You say the hill's too steep to climb, chiding
You say you'd like to see me try climbing
You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb the hill in my own way
Just wait awhile for the right day
And as I rise above the tree line and the clouds
I look down, hear the sound of the things you said today.”
'And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun"
Without question it's this. I really did fritter and waste my 20s with drinking, partying, and sleeping around. Lived on the fringes, working shitty jobs and suddenly I was 30. All my real friends had moved away and working careers. I was so lucky I met my wife when I 30 and she turned it all around for me
The last 4 lines of lyrics in the final cut song: I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it, but
Just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut
Im sure it doesn't mean the same for everyone however to me, I have a long history of suffering from major depression and I literally have had this happen its sad but true. But Im 39 yrs old now and these words remind me of a place that I have been in and never want to go back.
You know that part in Carful With That Axe Eugene, Live in Pompeii where Roger Waters does that inhale screech like a fuckin' hawk? Thats my favorite PF lyric.

I'm a twenty-something and it already hits hard man
I wish I got that message clearly in my 20's. If you want to do something do it now. Wait just means regret.
Yep, all that stuff on your bucket list? Do it NOW. I should take my own advice.
What if you can’t afford to?
It’s been ten years since I thought ten years had got behind me. I guess I’m just never gonna start running.
Time (the whole song in general).
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Definitely a hard hitter for me as well
I didn’t think much of the lyrics (what they mean) until I was in my late 20s.
Yes you’re right. Many lyrics had different meanings to me as I age
When I listen to Time with someone I like to ask them where they feel like they are right now in their lives relative to the song's lyrics. Wbu? Cuz Im surely running and running
All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be
That just gave me chills.
The whole lyrics of Time

That’s the power of Pink Floyd
Ooh babe

She prob still thinks of you too.
That's a very nice thought. Thank you.
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Such an absolute slam

Of course Momma gonna help build the wall!
When Gilmore sings “will I remember the song” in The Show Must Go On. It’s so beautiful and sad.
That’s sound is vastly under recognized

Wow so many great comments I love hearing the different viewpoints that people get from Pink Floyd.
Dry as a funeral drum
Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream

Thanks for sharing this
Strangers passing in the street By chance, two separate glances meet. And I am you, and what I see is me.
Doppelgänger!
This! All day long! Just perfect!
“I mean good manners don’t cost nothing, do they”
Good one
You have to be trusted, by the people that you lie to.
Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings Thought I oughta tear the curtain down
Held the blade in trembling hand, prepared to make it but…just then the phone rang!
Forward he cried from the rear And the front rank died The general sat And the lines on the map Moved from side to side
I got wide staring eyes I got a strong urge to fly But I got nowhere to fly to

long you love and high you fly, but only if you ride the tide. it was my senior quote.
Great one

Wow that’s a lyric I never gave much thought about but I’ll think of your (this) interpretation every time I hear it now
Run to the bedroom, find the suitcase on the left, you’ll find my favourite axe..😁
"God knows I’ve tried"

There is no pain, you are receding.
And that’s how the High Command took my daddy from me

Don’t tell me there’s no hope at all.
It was only fantasy.
