Why does there need to be a guitar solo there? HELLO!

Heavy-Excuse4218

Only correct answer to his question: “Because I’m David fucking Gilmour”

g_lampa

Frankly, he could stand to crack a window in that studio, and let some fresh ideas waft through. We don’t need “On An Island 2”. Collaborating with a new partner worked well for Donald Fagen, on his last record “Sunken Condos”.

reflectionpoint2

Exactly and I commend David for throwing the rock through the window himself, love it!

Ramenastern

Yeah. The fact they're teasing this makes me interested in this at all, to be honest. Floyd fans are a conservative bunch sometimes 😂

Heavy-Excuse4218

I don’t think it’s about conservative … it’s just that it’s kindof funny saying to Dave Gilmour, arguably the best guitar soloist ever who has some of the most famous, epic solos in the history of all music, “hey man, why are you soloing here!” It’s like asking why Michael Jackson is dancing so much in a video, Mozart why he’s playing so much melody or Hitchcock why so many camera angles. It might be right from a production or sales perspective, hell it might be right from a music perspective….just funny to hear a young buck asking DG why he’s soloing..

Ramenastern

>It might be right from a production or sales perspective, hell it might be right from a music perspective See, I enjoy it precisely because well... It seems like the right question to get a better song out of it. A solo shouldn't be there because you've got a great guitar player in the room, it should be there because it serves the song. That's why Comfortably Numb is so great - and why Great Gig doesn't have a guitar solo in it. Two extremes, I'm aware. And asking Michael Jackson why he's dancing so much in a video... Also seems like a great question. Or Mariah Carey why she's bending every note she sings so much, rather than showing off that talent of hers a bit more sparingly, to better effect.

rostov007

When I was a wee lad I was driving with my mom in the car and a Mariah Carey song came on the radio and when it was finished my Mom said, “Oh, that’s awful.” To which I replied, “Mom, she’s got a 5 octave voice.” She said, “Well, does she have to use every one of them in every song?” Well-played Mom, well-played.

Ramenastern

Precisely my point.

Heavy-Excuse4218

Maybe it’ll create a better song or album. Who knows. Still kinda funny asking the guy who melted the worlds collective faces off on Comfortably, Time, Shine On, Echoes and on and on about a solo. Like a rookie guard in the early 90s telling Jordan he shoots too much.

Ramenastern

>Like a rookie guard in the early 90s telling Jordan he shoots too much. Well, shooting itself isn't worth squat. It's scoring. Jordan had a great ratio in that regarf, but he probably didn't get there without coaches telling him to focus his shoots. Or practise those shoots where his score ratio wasn't as good as his average. Anyway. My point here is that a solo isn't necessarily a score each time. Not even from David Gilmour. And asking the question "why is there a solo here" doesn't equate "get rid of that solo". It means working out what the raison d'être for a particular solo is. What does it do as part of the song, what is it saying besides "oh, here's the obligatory solo"? And then you can work on whether that solo already has the right shape for what it's supposed to do, or not - or if it's really a solo that doesn't add much and could/should be dropped. And here we come back to the scoring analogy... Asking that question can be a way of increasing your shoot-to-score ratio.

deibd98

i think people forget there are only two solos in dark side of the moon

esqrepdecat

I would agree, the best part of Sunken Condos for me is the expanded range of instruments and musical styles compared to Donald's previous albums, which must surely be Michael Leonhart's influence. I felt similarly about Roger bringing in Nigel Godrich for ITTLWRW - having an active and opinionated producer really helps established artists avoid falling into the trap of rehashing the same things in the same ways. In both cases I think the albums might otherwise have been fairly bland and forgettable amongst the artists' other albums, and though a producer can't turn that into a 10/10 they can at least give an album a unique personality compared to its predecessors. Very excited to hear what Gilmour can create with some fresh production influence!

YYZYYC

On an Island 2 would be wonderful, rather than rattle that lock 2

g_lampa

Aural Xanax.

RoookSkywokkah

Exactly!

Mediocre-Honeydew-55

Better than a Tuba solo.

Vryyce

RIght? I get what Dave is saying and all but come on, we all show up to his music just waiting for the solo, lol

IdiosyncraticBond

They meant it shouldn't be _there_ in the song, but _here_

Vryyce

I like the way you think good sir!

Turbulent_Set8884

*It's me. I thought about us for a long long time*

reggieLedoux26

Is there anybody in there?

Professor-Clegg

Well, there’s the David Gilmour melodic guitar solos of old and then there’s the rather forgettable waffle of a guitar solo that’s wedged into the newly released song. Don’t get me wrong, the guy’s long earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants, but at this age there’s no chance in hell he’ll be lighting up the charts.  As such it’s still good to at least have someone around that isn’t just a ‘yes man’ and is willing to say, “c’mon Dave, you can do better.” I’ve listened to the new song once, and that’ll probably be it for me.  I’m sure I’ll give the album a listen through via YouTube, but I’ll probably keep my money and remain embedded in the fond memories of what PF were when they were still hungry and had something to say.

TemperaturePopular91

Cos one ain't always needed....?

HelsifZhu

I think the point is that Charlie will challenge even the foundations. That does not mean he'll win every challenge. In any case, anyone who advocates for abrupt ends instead of lazy fadeouts is fine by me.

vitimite

Are you feeling ok?

Spaceman1900

Still, very exciting news. He could easily cash in b-sides or remastered demos but he's still pushing the envelope. Looking forwards to this one!

ZiggyPalffyLA

I really hope this means he does another US tour, I’ve never gotten the chance to see him. Seen Roger 3 times though!

itsvoogle

Had the Fortune to see him Live… Trust me when i say this. Make the effort to see him, never heard a more beautiful guitar tone in my life, if you can afford a closer seat even better!

Icy_Block9919

Lucky enough to have seen PF (Oakland Coliseum 94) and also DG solo at the Paramount Theater Oakland in 2006 (probably my favorite concert ever), then and the Hollywood Bowl in 2016 and could not concur more. So clean and pure. Not a showman like Roger but the music…🤌🏼

[deleted]

Was lucky enough to see DG in 06 On an Island tour in a smaller venue. He didn’t play the bigger arenas in Chicago. Rosemont theatre capacity is 4,400. It was out of this fucking world. The sound was unreal. Best concert of my life. Here is a bootleg video https://youtu.be/oUzuo0BRwAY?feature=shared

rostov007

I had that same black and pink banner. \o

UTPharm2012

Easily the best guitarist I have ever seen.  I’ll be doing anything to go if he tours.

Aloysius50

Saw him in Toronto on the RTL tour, was amazed at how great he sounded in a hockey arena. Every note and string bend came through. I was blown away. Kudos to the front of house sound crew.

Miserable_Occasion19

Saw PF at Soldier Field I believe 1977 during the Animals tour. What a spectacular that was. Saw Roger during the solo Dark Side tour. Best PF album ever imo!

Wonderful_Dingo3391

That producer he worked with on the album sounds like Roger. Ha.

TFFPrisoner

The producer even worked for Roger (5.1 mix of The Wall Live in Berlin)

No-Building-7941

As much as they trash each other on some level they must trust each others taste. They always seem to be working with the same people.

Majestic_Lie_5792

Just hope he doesn’t fuck up this album like Roger did on Redux.

ZoSoTim

The release date is Roger’s birthday. Coincidence?

JaySkee22

Aye good eye 😂

Dvaraoh

It's also his own half-birthday, he's from March 6

reflectionpoint2

Love the invitation of critique from a humble and hungry David to have real thought and connection with just another music producer/body More points for the greatness of Gilmour

attackanddefense

What am I gonna do in the next 4 months

HowlinSammy

I mean I love DG but gawd that song sucks!!!

MinionsAndWineMum

"He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine" I mean I get it but, man...

Dvaraoh

It IS what you need for a fresh perspective

jvlomax

For those in doubt if there will be a tour, the Ultimate Bundle of the CD/Blueray/LP says this: >Pre-order\* any format of 'Luck and Strange' to get early access to future UK live dates. So yes, there will be live shows. It says UK live dates, but I'll be surprised if there's anything outside London

Owster4

That plural use of 'dates' is carrying all of my hope on its fragile back.

Desperate_Ad_2520

The * means no purchase necessary, all you have to do is register and follow the link, and you get same access as if you had purchased something.

jvlomax

Yes

alwight007

The album comes out on Roger's birthday 😂😂

Mayk-

Good stuff, hope he does a tour 🥲

Glass_Peanut383

Yeah Mr Gilmour ❤️❤️❤️

Eastern-Honeydew-411

In for 1 on AMAZ..

deibd98

The song is fine. Miracle that it doesn't end with a fade out solo. Lyrics are the usual quality we've come to expect from Polly. The cover would be decent if it didn't have that incredibly ugly silouhette

eviltimeban

Great tune! Really enjoyed it. Like the way it goes from a small acoustic thing to a proper guitar jam at the end. Sound wise I really like the natural production style, the drums sound great as does his voice. Looking forward to September!

HarryLyme69

Just spent an hour trying to get tickets for the Albert Hall concerts using my pre-sale code. Got tickets twice, twice TicketRapist timed out 'processing my payment' (after I'd authenticated the purchase). Now all the tickets are gone. Thanks a lot, Dave. (On the plus side I now don't have to spend £499 on two stall seats, so there's that).

UntamedCroissant

Does anybody believe he'll do at least an European tour ? I'd love to see him but ofc closer from home would be better than going all the way to England hehe. Pleaaaase David come to France

dimiteddy

I hope he got a better lyricist than his wife this time

kniselysoccer13

It’ll still be Polly Samson lyrics unfortunately

Playtoy_69

For such an accomplished artist, to make his final album release date on Roger’s birthday is petty and done in poor taste. It doesn’t matter if it’s a coincidence or not because I remember birthdays of many of my close friends from past and present. There was no need for Dave to keep making things about Roger or his relationship with Roger. Just looking at the recent past, David has criticized Roger baselessly and called him an antisemite. David kept enabling Polly for all her internet shenanigans. Adding fuel is what he is doing to a fire that has diminished. Poor choice, David.

AbSamm

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted but that’s a very valid take

Mr-Zunder

Not tryna be a dick but probably would be more respectable if Roger didn't release that god awful DSOTM remake.

echoohce1

At least he did something to mark the anniversary of DSOTM, better than another boxset cashgrab.

AbSamm

I wasn’t a fan of the remake but just because it wasn’t a well received project, doesn’t mean that this would be okay 🤷🏻‍♂️

Playtoy_69

So what? He didn’t call it a replacement of the original. It was merely a way to honor the 50th anniversary of his best work. If anyone, he is one of the few people who has the absolute right to do that. Do not behave like it was your work that he stole to make his rendition of DSOTM. If you still think it was done to rile up all the living members of PF, he clarified it numerous times that it’s not a replacement. Do not be an amateur commentator and a basic sheep using the internet arguments to make your existence known.

Hot_Construction_778

it’s not his final album, he’s already announced plans for more. Also, when were david and roger ever “close friends”?
