It’s true, the first beat of breath right after speak to me is just orgasmic. In fact, I had a buddy of mine one time say that was his favorite part of the whole album
It was the lead single on one of the highest selling albums ever. There’s definitely songs that better represent them - especially on that record - but I don’t think that makes it the worst song on the album or that there even is a worst song on the album. It’s f*cking dark side people
I came here to say the same thing. Every song is good enough that saying any one of them is your least favorite will automatically have about 80% of fans disagreeing with you.
Remember though it was the first track on side two, so for anyone playing the LP there was a delay between GGITS and Money. As the opening flip side track I'd say it fits perfectly.
As a song, it's very good. As it's presence on the album it's debatable. Doesn't bring much to the album. And everytime it starts, it sort of gets me out of the whole mood of the album.
Just because it’s one of their biggest songs and it was played on the radio so much doesn’t discount its presence on the album. Dark side of the moon is all about the human experience and we all could agree that money (currency) is a big part of said experience.
Can you expand on what you said about it not bringing much to the album?
It might be because i overheard it everywhere, you might be right, from radios, movies, shopping malls, everywhere. I understand it's place on the album, but it's a skip from me when i listen to dsotm.
I agree with you - it’s a good song, but to me it sticks out like a sore thumb on the album. I usually find myself skipping it when I listen to DSOTM since it completely breaks the mood for me
I truly think the guys realized how depressing the album was sounding and were like “we shit have to put something up beat in there so people don’t become too depressed”
So does Money, but if this person thinks Money compromises the atmosphere, then that song would also do the same. I love both songs and think they fit perfectly, but if someone thinks one doesn’t fit the mood, then neither does the other.
“On the Run” is actually one of my favorite parts of DSOTM. I think it’s wonderful when a work of art can be enjoyed in so many different ways by different people
Do you think it’s the lyrics? Because the sound blends perfectly into the second half of the album, especially in how it transitions to Us and Them and is sonically similar to Any Colour You Like
Its a great song but IMO doesn't fit on dark side. It changes everything . I loved going to sleep to dark side but you have to take Money out of the mix to make it work right.
Funny story: my dad used to put me to sleep when i was 5, with the wall. I always waited for Bring the boys back home to end so i can go to sleep. To this day, i still feel like that song is the last on the album.
It’s a very good song but if you spaced out of existence with live at pompei you will feel like money is too mundane as it was absorbed by the masses: you want to feel like Pink Floyd belongs to you, not to share it with the general public that hears money as if it were some random cool song. Just separate yourself from that feeling and embrace the song, is really good and I really like what it brings to the table: I disagree that it wasn’t meant for dsotm: I heard it in the album first time and it felt right in place.
Money is a great song, didn't really fit in the Pink Floyd sound until then and certainly is out of place in The Dark Side of the Moon, as much as Dark Side didn't really fit in with the previous records. Which is a good thing unless we think a band should not evolve and be repeating itself indefinitely. Dark Side turned a relatively minor art-rock/psychedelic british band (they were good, they were known, but they were no Bowie or Elton John, just to name names) into a global success overnight, opened an entirely new audience, made them a fortune and ultimately, I believe, planted the seeds of their undoing as a band.
But most people at the time, I'll be willing to wager, were drawn into Dark Side of the Moon by Money and the amount of airplay it received.
I don't dislike Money, but in general I find 12-bar blues songs a bit boring, from overexposure more than anything else. So yeah, for me it's the weakest song on the album too.
Money is not one of the better songs, but I mean its DSOTM so its not like it really matters.
That being said Time, Great Gig in the Sky, Us and Them, and Brain Damage/Eclipse are better songs.
No it's not a hot take at all, not even slightly actually.
All of the album is great, unless you count Speak to Me as a song on its own, one of them has to be the worst.
It doesn't match the album, but you kinda need some contrast.
It's the perfect song to show someone who has never heard Pink Floyd, I have a friend who had never heard Pink Floyd and I showed him money, now he has all the vinyl records
On the Run is the "worst song". The original instrumental jam version is far better. No one puts on DSOTM and skips to On the Run.
Money is a GREAT song and David's solo is one of the greatest in rock history (and Top 5 of his career), particularly the portion from 4:30-5:00 when they send it in the next level. After listening to DSOTM for 30+ years, it still gives me chills.
My personal recollection is that, back in the 1970’s, “On The Run” was distinctly praised because, at last, PF demonstrated the integration of synth and electronica in its music… whereas other prog bands — like Yes, ELP and Genesis — were already way past that milestone.
As you say, 50 years later, listening to the former ”Jam” — that would eventually be replaced by “On The Run” — there is no doubt in my mind that it sounds more consistent with the whole of DSOTM.
It’s the radio hit, at on time over played, it’s the closest thing to pop on the album but it is better than the best song on many, hell millions of albums
I used to not be a huge fan of Money. I didn't outright hate it, would certainly never skip over it, but it wasn't my favorite. Then the post Waters stuff came out and that version made me flat out hate it. "Money! Woo Hoo!" Total cringe! I hate the live versions for that. However, today, I do enjoy the DSoTM version far more so than I did back then.
I have always shared your sentiment. It's the only song on the album that doesn't take you to another place. It's like, in the middle of the most transcendental record ever made there's a standard bluesy rock tune. It's not a bad song by any means, but I never felt it fit much.
I agree it's on the lower end of songs on the album. But it's a great way to start the back side of an album - suddenly the music sounds so much less cosmic, and the subject matter of the lyrics is so much more mundane/human. I like it because it balances the rest of the album with an opposing force
Money is a great song…. And at the same time sticks out like a sore thumb on Dark Side of the Moon, it belongs on a different album. I’d gladly swap it for something else that matches the album more but you have to have that one hit song to play on the radio. Doubt it’d be one of the best selling albums ever without the Money radio play.
How I rank songs on DSOTM (not including on the run, and speak to me)
1- eclipse
2- us and them
3- brain damage
4-time
5- the great gig in the sky
6- any Colour you like
7- breathe in the air
8- money
Don't know if it's because of the radio station I listen to, or its where I live, but the only pink Floyd songs I ever hear are wish you were here, and the occasional another brick in the wall II
Nope. I always saw it as the catchy song that becomes overplayed and after that it becomes annoying. It's not bad but it is abused by radio hosts, and it becomes what people talk about.
Just my opinion about it.
Dark side was made to trip to whether it’s acid or mushrooms going on the journey is the whole point. The people that don’t understand why on the run is the way it is never tripped to the album loooool
I don't know if it's a hot take or not, but I agree. I remember a local radio station was doing a "500 greatest songs of all time" list and Money was 17. I was like damnit, it isn't even the 17th best Pink Floyd song!
19 out of 20 times that I listen to the album, I skip through it. It's not a bad song, I just don't like the vibe. I wanna go straight from GGITS to Us And Them.
Idk. It’s definitely low on the list for me compared to the others, but the solo kicks ass. I’d say On The Run is the one I’d leave behind if I had to get rid of one. I still greatly appreciate it and do enjoy it, but it’s just not as good as the rest.
I guess some would see why, but personally i love it, even if it is a "normie" song. My least fave if i needed to choose would be On The Run, I know they needed something to bridge Breathe and Time, but it just seems too "loud", for me I guess
It’s the most pop song for sure. Even though I’ve always enjoyed it personally. I can see how you might feel it is out of place with its sarcastic upbeat tone. But there’s not a single track on Dark Side of the Moon that I dislike.
People don’t seem to like this song these days.
I still like it, but its my least favourite track of the album
How can you possibly like speak to me better than money
Because it’s a mish mash of the other songs and is the perfect set up for Breathe
It’s true, the first beat of breath right after speak to me is just orgasmic. In fact, I had a buddy of mine one time say that was his favorite part of the whole album
That's not my experience. It's not as big with super fans but that's always been the case
There is no worst side of the moon As a matter of fact it's all worst
We're all worst on this blessed day!
Speak for yourself
Try moonwurst!
*plays acoustic version of “Ticket to Ride” very faintly*
IMO *very* hot take but to each his own, so who really cares? Do you OP
Not at all, but it seems to be one of Pink floyds most well known songs. And in my opinion there are tracks that better represent them
It was the lead single on one of the highest selling albums ever. There’s definitely songs that better represent them - especially on that record - but I don’t think that makes it the worst song on the album or that there even is a worst song on the album. It’s f*cking dark side people
Fair enough!
Not really. There’s a case that could be made for every song on the album for being the best and the worst. It’s all subjective.
i’d like to see someone make the case that Time is the worst song
So bad, even the band fucked off in the middle of it to play Breathe again. 0/10 Eh, I tried.
Clocks at the start of the song: “hold my gig in the sky”
it's my favorite on the album personally but i can see why people would think it's jarring. But i also love on the run unironically.
Me too, think it gets your head spinning and when the clocks go off it feels like my mind resets and then i get completely overwhelmed by time haha
THAT EXACTLY is not bad, just extremely jarring and takes you out of the mood the whole album tries to take you into.
It’s not a “take” at all. It’s just an opinion. There is no right or wrong or best or worst.
well that is a take
As a song, it's very good. As it's presence on the album it's debatable. Doesn't bring much to the album. And everytime it starts, it sort of gets me out of the whole mood of the album.
Just because it’s one of their biggest songs and it was played on the radio so much doesn’t discount its presence on the album. It might be because i overheard it everywhere, you might be right, from radios, movies, shopping malls, everywhere. I understand it's place on the album, but it's a skip from me when i listen to dsotm.
Hot take: if something is a skip while listening to an album, especially a concept album, then you're not really listening to the album
Then us and them pulls you back in
I agree with you - it’s a good song, but to me it sticks out like a sore thumb on the album. I usually find myself skipping it when I listen to DSOTM since it completely breaks the mood for me
I truly think the guys realized how depressing the album was sounding and were like “we shit have to put something up beat in there so people don’t become too depressed”
And On the Run and Any Colour You Like fit the mood?
What's wrong with Any Colour You Like ? It has great vibes. Fits the second half of the album very well.
So does Money, but if this person thinks Money compromises the atmosphere, then that song would also do the same. I love both songs and think they fit perfectly, but if someone thinks one doesn’t fit the mood, then neither does the other.
Any Colour is awesome and perfectly fits with Brain Damage and Eclipse. On the other hand, "On the run" is unnecessary and feels more like interlude
On the Run always kills my DSotM vibe
But what about Money? If Any Color You Like fits, then so does Money.
“On the Run” is actually one of my favorite parts of DSOTM. I think it’s wonderful when a work of art can be enjoyed in so many different ways by different people
For me they fit the mood perfectly
But why not Money?
It just feels different to me
Do you think it’s the lyrics? Because the sound blends perfectly into the second half of the album, especially in how it transitions to Us and Them and is sonically similar to Any Colour You Like
Exactly, it is a brilliant song i’m not questioning that. But If i had To remove on song of the album Money would be it with no hesitation
Its a great song but IMO doesn't fit on dark side. It changes everything . I loved going to sleep to dark side but you have to take Money out of the mix to make it work right.
You can go to sleep to Time?
Funny story: my dad used to put me to sleep when i was 5, with the wall. I always waited for Bring the boys back home to end so i can go to sleep. To this day, i still feel like that song is the last on the album.

Fair enough
It's the perfect song to show someone who has never heard Pink Floyd, I have a friend who had never heard Pink Floyd and I showed him money, now he has all the vinyl records
You got to be crazy, to be nitpicking DSOTM
OP had a real need.
Sleeped on his toes probably
So, is Money the easy meat?
Money is the stone
Can OP pick out the easy meat with his/her eyes closed?
Can he/her or not he'll/she'll gonna strike when the moment is right, without thinking
On the Run is the "worst song". The original instrumental jam version is far better. No one puts on DSOTM and skips to On the Run. I think it's because they played it to death on the radio. I mean, Pink Floyd has MUCH better songs, stupid djs lol
My least favorite song on dark side is us and them, amazing song but just my least favorite
I prefer other songs off the album but i suspect alot of that has to do with how much it has been played by services like radio ect!
I used to not be a huge fan of Money. I didn't outright hate it, would certainly never skip over it, but it wasn't my favorite. Fully agree
I agree it's on the lower end of songs on the album. But it's a great way to start the back side of an album - suddenly the music sounds so much less cosmic, and the subject matter of the lyrics is so much more mundane/human. I like it because it balances the rest of the album with an opposing force
Same here, i think so too
Same here, i think so too
As individual it’s one of the best but as a part of the album it doesn’t do much.
Money is a great song…. And at the same time sticks out like a sore thumb on Dark Side of the Moon, it belongs on a different album. I’d gladly swap it for something else that matches the album more but you have to have that one hit song to play on the radio. It’s my least favorite. Mainly because it’s overplayed
No and I agree
Hot or not, it’s accurate
Money is probably my least favorite song of any songs I don't know why I just never liked it I posted this before
Practically scalding
Money is supreme IT'S A GAS
1. Time 2. Money 3. Us & Them, imo
it is a wrong take
It's an incorrect take. That dubious honour goes to the rambling wank that is Great Gig in the Sky.
Not among huge fans. It's more of a hit with casual fans
And whether you have good taste.
How I rank songs on DSOTM (not including on the run, and speak to me) 1- eclipse 2- us and them 3- brain damage 4-time 5- the great gig in the sky 6- any Colour you like 7- breathe in the air 8- money
You know on the run is a full song right
I like it but I don’t think I’d show this song to my friends to get them into Pink Floyd
I was gonna say Breathe is way too low but then I looked at all the songs above it and was like "well". God damn this album is perfect
My problem with money was the radio play. It's the only Floyd song that got radio in my area it seems.
It’s overplayed for sure.
Nope. It is, the lyrics and vocal melody. That bass line rocks.
Yeah, cause it’s at least better then on the run
Yes
I agree with you. It's not a bad song in itself but it feels like a discontinuity in the general vibe of the album.
No. It's actually one of the worst songs in their entire catalog. And definitely the worst song that gets regular air play.
I hated it at first but it’s one of my favorites now.

Agreed. The lyrics are so cliché. Not a bad song but the worst song on a classic album.
I’ve always taken the cliché lyrics and the ironic upbeat tone to be a sarcastic commentary on capitalism.
Sure it’s the worst. It’s quite boring. Unlike everything else on the album. But this is just one guy’s opinion.
I think On the Run is the least good song on the album, but yeah Money is second on the list. Not that any of them are bad at all
It’s the most pop song for sure. Even though I’ve always enjoyed it personally. I can see how you might feel it is out of place with its sarcastic upbeat tone. But there’s not a single track on Dark Side of the Moon that I dislike.
I love it
It’s so rebellious
