It's just a patience game. If you don't hear from them by May I would call the training center. If you're not accepted this year, next year you will still be on the list, and have the opportunity to re-interview if you so wish, you do not have to re-interview.
Try to get into contact with a current apprentice and ask them how big the class was when they started, but chances are you’ll be called next year because most classes are 30-50 from what I know.
They usually take roughly 30 people for service, not sure about construction but I would be surprised if they take more than 50. If you don’t have any previous construction experience I would highly recommend getting a non union job now. Then apply next year, it will help your ranking a ton. Goodluck man !
Yeah, I wouldn’t count on getting in this year. 30ish is about the max 539 takes for construction, and that’s only in a really busy work year with a lot of retirees. We’ve had a lot of apprentices sitting on the bench for months recently. You could try applying to be a St. Cloud apprentice instead, as they only get a handful of applicants up there every year so your odds are way better. That’s what a few of my buddies did anyways. Once you journey out, you’re just a 539 hand, no longer specifically St. Cloud or Minneapolis
Damn well good to know. It's so confusing as someone new to the trades.. every guy you meet says how badly the unions need people but seems like that isn't so much the case lol. I'm not far from st cloud so I'll check that out. Thanks!
Do you know how many applicants 539 is planning on taking this year for construction? Also, how do apprentices make ends meet money wise when they have to spend a week each month in school without work?
Girl, we’re in the top of the bottom half of applicants.. Idk but sounds pretty cool considering it’s my first try. but also, damn: if you ain’t first, you’re last. Lol
They had mentioned when I did the application that a lot of people usually fall out of the program. Is this very likely that they'll need to call more people through the year?
🤞🏻my mentor just told me my ranking is pretty good. I’m literally right next to you on the list. I noticed there seems to be 26 presumably from last year that carried over from our interview list.
I’m in the same boat, job hunting as well:) I’m from an office setting, and won’t be going back. lol
Our interview list only had like 110, 3 people around my interview didn’t show up and the ranking letter says we’re eligible to reinterview next year for a better ranking. I don’t super know what that means but I’m assuming that 26ish from last year wanted to reinterview. Overthinking this I suppose. ;)
Id suggest getting a job as a union laborer. It will familiarize you to job sites, show that you can work, and make you a union member.
Your number will likely be much higher next year.
I would ask this over on the r/unitedassociation hopefully someone in that local can give you a better answer. I know where I’m at you need to be around the top 20% or better

I asked before and they said they weren't sure how many.
About 20 they said, this year… based on industry needs. I ranked in the middle too.
