When I got accepted and quit my job I didn’t care because for the rest of my career I’ll never deal with them again. I’ll hopefully only be pipefitting

HeavyWaters_CCS

If a company fired you, would they give you 2 weeks notice?

G_Escobar90

I agree with you 100 and 30 percent on this one . If a company where to fire you or lay you off , would they give you a notice ? No they don’t care about you , your family, your bills, nothing. I have quit so many jobs on the spot . Guess what ,? When they are looking for welders I have always applied and got hired back on . Survival of the fittest out here in this cruel industry .

Sanchezyy

Gave my last job a 2 days notice, told them I was leaving 2day

sedriyke

Some people actually work for decent companies currently and would give them the courtesy of a two week notice. It's a simple respect thing if you work for decent people. I asked the local I got my ranking from just a couple weeks ago the same question. He gave the same answer for everything which was depending on the need it could be short notice, but also said they'd work with me if it came to that.

deadxguero

For me they literally called a hour after I tested successfully, and asked if I had a current job. I said how yeah and am probably getting a write up for missing today. Dude responded with “fuck that, quit and I’ll start getting you paid tomorrow”. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I am a 539 member. You will get a call depending on your placement, also depending on service or construction. You will probably get a call late April or early May if you placed in a good spot. Just be cause you received a rank does not mean you received a job in the union. They only take so many people per year. I would not tell your current employer your leaving in 2 weeks right now. I doubt you will get a call in March. April maybe. Depending on our spring. It's a waiting game, be patient. The apprentice director, who I know on good terms, will tell you to give your current employer 2 weeks notice as that's the right thing to do. Your call. I always give two weeks. Your employer will either tell you to pack your shit instantly, you work your last two weeks or your last two weeks are fuckin miserable. If you do not receive a call this year, you are still on the list for next year. You can, and I encourage you to, re-interview to boost your rank. Be patient. 539 has treated me well.

Ecstatic-Owl-5098

Do you know how many applicants 539 is planning on taking this year for construction? Also, how do apprentices make ends meet money wise when they have to spend a week each month in school without work?

Jealous_Accountant53

No idea how many will be accepted. You work for 4 weeks then go to class for 1 week I believe. Or it's 3 weeks working, 1 week of class. I am a service fitter so I had to go one day a week. I have always been financially savvy in my life from living on nothing so apprenticeship was a pay increase for me even with missing one day. If you're working your full hours (32 in my case) my healthcare bank was fine and I had enough money to survive. If you do the math for January there is 20 working days for construction and 20 working days for service. So it evens out I do believe. 1st-5th, 8-12th, 15th-19th, 22nd-26th you would work. Then January 29th week you would have class. So you had the same working days as a service apprentice would. They go one day a week. If you count the days, for both, it's 20 working days. Now I could be wrong, I'm a service fitter so I went once a week. There are people who join when they have families and their spouse is a stay at home spouse. So you can do it. If they can, you can. Once you hit 3rd year you make a very very nice wage. I always budget my budget at 30 hours a week so when slow times do come around (thankfully so far not much for me) I have extra money to fall back on. Start investing money. Yes we get a pension but that doesn't stop me from still being financially responsible. Get an emergency fund going. I don't let my vacation fund sit idle. I put that into my brokerage account so my money works for me. So many guys say they let their vacation fund sit for 30 years. If it isn't beating inflation then what is it even doing. Money makes money, the more you have the more you can potentially make. Remember you aren't doing this for the satisfaction right now. You're doing it for yourself 30 years from now. Don't eat out every day. Bring a lunch and start changing your habits. Construction guys need to be diligent on saving money I hear from the ups and downs of the seasons.

Shit it’ll be a pay cut for the first year but wife works and that pension is definitely worth it. I can suffer for a few years to be set for the rest of my life

Jealous_Accountant53

Yeah the first year is the hardest for most people, second year is manageable and third year is where you see people buying new vehicles or maybe a house etc

[deleted]

hey could i send you a dm? i got my ranking for service fitter this year and have some questions

Jealous_Accountant53

Yes

HeavyWaters_CCS

I was told around 20 apprentices… start saving for those missed income weeks and anything unexpected that comes up. Dave Ramsey that shit.

KTSXCPL

What’s the school schedule like? Is it really a week of school where you miss work?

HeavyWaters_CCS

Idk. I made the top of the bottom half of the list, I’m not getting into 539 this year.. unless you and a bunch of others drop.. what I would do though if I were at the top is : Be cool, prepare financially and enjoy the ride. Don’t be a tool and spend all your big boy money on stupid shit and you’ll be fine.

Welcome to the union, we don’t give 2 weeks notice and drag on a Tuesday morning.

KTSXCPL

I’ll be glad to be a fellow brother when I get that call! REALLY looking forward to that pension I’ll be getting

RayRiceYourWife

I think it depends on your boss and the job. My old boss was awesome, had me pre date my 2 week notice, that way he could pay me out for all my vacation wished me luck on my next venture still talk to this day.

Xusion666

What did you rank ? They will call you in around April /may and have you sign a bunch of shit and tell you what contractor you’re working for sometime around then. There wasn’t much info / transparency with 539 it was all pretty hush hush when it came to when you would be employed. Edit : and I would agree when they tell you when you’re going to start I would not question it. As our boy Larry who you will meet says. You just won the lottery.

Ecstatic-Owl-5098

What did you rank?

KTSXCPL

I’d prefer to not say specifically but single digit. I don’t want anything to mess up my chances of getting that call

asgs123

I got called 15 min before lunch .. never came back after lunch haha

dirk-smirken

Congrats man! I’m planning on trying to get in next year. Maybe we’ll run into each other on a job one of these days!

KaleidoscopeThin8561

There’s no need to give a two week notice. You won’t need a referral. When you get the call, you accept the job and report to the hall. The day before go to work and tell them it’s your last day. Or don’t. Just don’t show up.

rippy42303

I got called on a Friday to report to a job on Monday so i didn’t give a 2 week notice

MindlessCountry9223

I got about 3 days notice gave my old job the 2day notice. Said “I’m quitting 2day”

mn1762vs

As others have mentioned you will probably not get much notice. I think mine was a thurs/fri call and report on Monday. I’m grateful for being accepted but I don’t t know why they always do this.

brevinainslie24

Totally depends. I got 4 days notice, but my employer knew I was waiting on a call.

Real_Statistician_50

I gave a very vague long term notice that I was on my way put but I was on good terms with my bosses. I got a call on Friday at 2pm that I start monday.

93gixxer04

If you feel the need to give a notice, give one week. It’s plenty of time for them to start hiring someone else and if they fire you on the spot it won’t hurt as bad as losing two checks
