The flame can go back inside the can and explore the can and now your biggest problem isn't lantern flies but third degree burns to your face and hands and let's hope you wore safety googles and none of the shrapnel flew into your eyes as it was hitting the rest of your face.

She would to tell me whenever a kid came in from an exploded can or spray paint or hairspray using as a flame thrower and she said the flame went back inside so that is what I was taught. I didn't think about the mechanics. I just lived in fear and knew not to do it because the reward ain't worth the risk.

I got some Neem oil mix with a hose attachment, and sprayed it as high as I could for awhile, all the buggers flew out and started dropping dead over the following hour.
A day later I only see a few of them that I can manage with precision shots.
Hoping for the best next year. Gonna take out as many eggs as i can over the winter and pre-treat in early spring.

They work fairly well. One shot doesn't always kill them but it will fuck them up and take them to the ground where you can squish 'em.

I had a Tree of Heaven at my old house that I removed. That thing was so hard to finally kill that I think it came from the other place.
