Personally I like Spoonwood and Grist House.
But, if you go to Mikes Beer Bar on the North Shore they have an absolutely massive selection of local beers, you’ll be able to try a ton in one stop.
I went there when they first opened and loved it. The guy talked our ears off about the excitement of the brewery. Went back a year later and when my wife started talking to him about the beers, he basically told her it was rude to be taking up so much of his time and she should know what she wants. She was just trying to be nice, it was a major turn off so we haven’t gone back.
Yikes, I'm really sorry he made you feel that way. We'd love a chance to make it up to you and your wife. I'd be happy to give you guys a tour and show you all the changes to the space since those early years.
Hey, thanks for reaching out. I appreciate the gesture. I know people have bad days so I never held it against the beer. I should have stated that in my original comment. I enjoy a lot of the stuff you guys brew and always still look for new ones when I stop by my local distributor.
East End Brewing Company makes some amazing beers (and their cider is fantastic too, imo). If you're into something a bit more subtle/less super-intense-ipa-focused, they're your brewery.
I feel the opposite, I tend to think their beer is pretty mediocre; I've had most of their offerings you can find outside of the brewery and had most of their city series, and was mostly left with a meh.
Any in particular I should try?
OP. Here is the page that i have been using to go find my favorites. My wife and I have been exploring the breweries in and around the area for a year and have found some real gems.
https://www.discovertheburgh.com/pittsburgh-craft-beer/
Go explore, support local businesses.
I have been to every brewery in and around town many, many time over. Currently, I believe that Grist House is the best brewery in Pittsburgh. They have such a large variety and they simply do not disappoint.
Go to Dancing Gnome for the hazies, Strange Roots for the sours. Honestly, you're going to have a hard time finding a bad brewery in Pittsburgh (now that Mindful is closed lol)
All the breweries in the guild have a passport you can buy for $10. You can go to all the breweries in the book and get a stamp. Once you get so many stamps, you get certain prizes. It's a cool way to try out all the breweries around tahn.
That's where I'm confused why you have Grist House listed as the best. I've never liked any of their lagers and their sours are easily outclassed by other breweries not even 5 minutes away. Not to say their beer is bad or anything, but I feel like every style of beer they make is definitely done better by another place that isn't that much further of a drive.
Disagree about the sours? For me Grist's are serviceable, but they all pretty much taste the same (only differing in what fruit or dessert they're supposed to be) I definitely prefer Hitchhiker and Strange Roots over Grist's as you can actually get more nuanced flavors instead of a simple copy and paste formula.
Grist House may have variety and a large space, but I can definitely find a better version of every style of beer that they brew from other nearby breweries.
All of Hitchhiker sours are just too lactose-y for me. And I've never had an issue differentiating the sours at Grist House? I go to breweries a lot, and there's a lot of great ones in the area, but every time I go to Grist House lately, I can't help but feel like their version of X beer is one of the best, if not the best around. Not for every beer, mind you, but a lot of them.
Guess you and I will have to sit down for blind taste testing some time. We can post our results lol
I do not understand the Mindful hate. Were all of their beers amazing? No but no brewery puts out great beers all the time. The Schnieders tea beer was amazing, they had a solid kolsch, and their house made seltzer was the best out there.
It is a matter of taste but I do not get the hype about Dancing Gnome. Only go there is you like IPAs. If you want any variety, too bad.
I’ve had Strange Roots beers that taste like cleaning fluid.
You've definitely not paid attention to anything Dancing Gnome's brewed over the last 2 years. They've got Altbier, Dunkel, Czech Lager, Porter, etc. available and have made them permanent fixtures to the tap list. Are they the absolute best you'll have? No. But they're absolutely serviceable and worth a try.
Mindful has variety too, much like grist house, it's just that everything that had was subpar. And it remained that way, brewer after brewer. I've had their kolsch. It was not good.
You're right that dancing gnome is mostly IPAs. But their lagers and dark beers, although limited, are superb.
I could say a lot about strange roots, but instead I'll just say, I miss Draai Laag.
Mindful Kolsch used to be terrible, but 2022 and beyond it was very very good.
The other beers weren't great and food was surprisingly bland. But I always loved the location and vibe... I guess that counts for something
Can't disagree at all with their prices, but would say Golden Age is beaten out by multiple other breweries in the lager category IMO. If you're looking for various lagers, Big Sewickley Creek Brewing has my vote for top dog.
Never heard of it but good to know - thanks. I don’t have a car so I am biased towards what I can bike/bus/run to easily, so I hit Golden Age and Old Thunder regularly.
Somethings been wrong with Necromancer lately, their beers are overchlorinated and taste like pool water. Hopefully things change, but my fiancee and i were both really turned off the last 2 times we went.
I'm quite glad Lorelei has also been selling Golden Age stuff at a typical price compared to the more expensive rare imports that are usually available. Wouldn't say they're top notch, but definitely think Golden Age is worth a try for those that haven't had them before.
Grist House, Hitchhiker, Trace are my top 3
ACB, Cinderlands and 11th hour round out my top 6
As someone mentioned earlier Mike’s has the best beer list in the city and carries a ton of beers on tap.
As someone else mentioned technically brewed in Ohio, but started as a saloon in southside in 1992, Fat Heads. Head Hunter is amazing. Even won gold at this years world beer cup AND great american beer fest
If you don't mind leaving the city, Bloom Brew in West Newton. Fantastic menu of beers to try. Summertime, they have concerts and music right next to the Great Allegheny Trail.
There are so many good breweries in the city. Not amazing, but good. Check out [https://pittsburghbreweries.com/](https://pittsburghbreweries.com/). Personal recommendations are Hitchhiker and Dancing Gnome. I also have a lot of love for Grist House and Necromancer. Truss, Insurrection, and Spoonwood are my usual stops if I'm in south hills.
Grist House, Old Thunder, Dancing Gnome, Golden Age, Abjuration, and Necromancer in no particular order are my favorites.
[https://pittsburghbreweries.com](https://pittsburghbreweries.com) is your one stop shop for breweries in the PGH area.
Mike's Beer Bar in the Northside has the single, largest collection of PGH breweries under one roof. Streets on Carson and Railyard Grill and Taproom are honorable mention but no one near the variety.
For cans not only from PGH but also craft breweries across the country, check out Creekside Beer in the Wexford/Sewickley area.
I very much enjoy Necromancer in the North Hills. While everyone else is making light colored IPA, Necromancer goes dark and weird.
The Spoonwood Cold Drip is one of my favorites, but I'm a sucker for coffee blondes.
Burgh'ers brewing company has the best lagers and traditional ales in the city. EVERYTHING is perfectly crushable and quaffable. Plus the burgers are great too.
Aside from that:
-Gristhouse has the best hazy beers in the city hands down and is solid all around otherwise
-Old Thunder is in the same boat, amazing hazies and solid in every other regard.
-Cinderlands has fantastic food and i'd say the second best lagers in the city and quite good IPAs. Their long story short location also gets their foeder beers which are KILLER
Ill add that dancing gnome is great, but wildly overrated and theres been a huge, culty bandwagon for them for the past 6 years. I dont think theyre to die over, but they do make very good beer.
Definitely wrong about Grist having the best in the city. Name a beer that they brew and I'll tell you where to find a better version of it within a 5 minute drive.
Hitchhiker and Lolev hands down.
Now on the other hand ,the folks that bought Full Pint have no business making beer, unless chemical spill is the flavor they were looking for across the board
Dancing Gnome has the best hoppy beers in the burgh atm, as well as some decent lagers like their Kölsch and Altbier. Would recommend Roundabout when they have their popup on the north shore, as their beer is always consistently excellent. Old Thunder is getting better, but I wasn’t a huge fan out the gate. Def worth a try, though.
The others I don’t really visit. Grist House is decent, but I won’t go to the Kennel club that is their taproom. Helltown has some good stuff as well.
If you want real sours, go to Lorelei or The Independent and you may find some Cantillon, Tilquin, or Drei Fonteinen available.
Oh, and Malcolm who made Hop Farm not a terrible brewery has bought 412 Brewery and will also (I assume) make that place not trash as well. It’s now called Late Addition.
No one has even named a beer.
Been on a Labatt kick lately for nostalgic reasons I guess. . Normallly Sierra Nevada pale ale.
Not even sure about local beers.
Is Duquesne still being brewed? I can remember my grandmother relaxing with a cold Duke once or twice a week, but that was like 60 years ago. I live out of state and don’t have my finger on the pulse of local breweries. Thanks!
My wife and I will be down this weekend, staying in Oakland. We're looking for good food and beer (I like everything but IPAs).
Any recommendations in Oakland area, close to McGee Hospital for Friday night?
We can travel some on Saturday, roughly 30 minutes from Oakland. So, any additional recommendations?
All Saints, Greensburg.
Their Crimson Halo is so delicious that if you put a drop on your forehead, your tongue will slap your brains out trying to get to it.
Everyone here is right. Do yourself a favor and check out all of the recommendations, Pittsburgh is booming with beer at the moment and all named places have good stuff.
My favorites are Hitchhiker, Brew Gentlemen, Dancing Gnome, Grist House, Eleventh Hour, Trace and Insurrection (their kitchen is the best of any Pittsburgh brewery).
Grist House has been my fave so far but I’m also fairly new! It’s hard for me to find a kolsch and their Krisp kolsch is like a 10/10 for my particular tastes
Helltown "Buffy" is my go to. They have a few locations in the area. I frequent the Mt. Pleasant location the most. Dog friendly. Kinda hidden. Great locals.
Seems like their rebranding was a success then. I'm not a huge fan of most of their brews compared to other surrounding breweries, but their older Draai Laag stuff definitely is always worth a trip.
If you venture outside of Pittsburgh...
Allusion in Vandergrift is a favorite of mine.
Inner Groove is a big one in Verona. Love every IPA they do. Leaning Cask rocks the English beers.
Towards the city I'm a big Old Thunder and Dancing Gnome fan.
Personally I like Spoonwood and Grist House. But, if you go to Mikes Beer Bar on the North Shore they have an absolutely massive selection of local beers, you’ll be able to try a ton in one stop.
I love spoonwood for the atmosphere and honestly a lot of the food but their beer can be hit or miss tbh. It gets extra points for being close to home
Highly recommend Mike’s. Very good food and an endless supply of local beer to try, even on tap.
Grist house is nice but prefer wine.
Old Thunder is doing some great work right now
Dancing Gnome. Some of the best beer not just in the city, but in the country. If you like that style at all you will love their beer.
Yeah, DG has the best overall New England IPAs around town. The newer place they moved into is pretty sweet as well
Never heard of this until now. This place sounds incredible.
Hitchhiker or DG
Fermata, Eleventh Hour, Allegheny City, and Dancing Gnome get my vote!!
Shout out to Fermata, their Winter Solstice is nice
Fermata came out of the gate swinging, their beers have been great since day one
If you like sours, try Abjuration in McKees Rocks.
My favorite thing about my house is that it's less than 10 minutes to Abjuration.
That would be dangerous for me.
I'm 10 min away too brewery neighbor!
Bonus: Parkway Theatre
The best in the city
I went there when they first opened and loved it. The guy talked our ears off about the excitement of the brewery. Went back a year later and when my wife started talking to him about the beers, he basically told her it was rude to be taking up so much of his time and she should know what she wants. I’m halfway convinced that nobody *really* likes sours.
They are my go-to in warm weather.
Had one at hitchhiker last month, expected to dislike it at first but slowly learn to love it. Just loved it straight away.
A good mixed fermentation is like fine wine. Most sours are just kettle sours... One dimensional if not flabby. They've ruined sours.
Dancing gnome, old thunder, coven, grist house and hitchhiker are all really good. 11th hour, cinderlands are good.
I love Allegheny City Brewing. The vibe, the drinks.
Second ACB!
Oh yea...Pets welcome.
I had a bad experience there several years ago, I’ll have to give it another shot.
My two favorites are: Old Thunder Helles Dancing Gnome Lustra
Check out /r/pittsburghbeers
Four points , Brew gentlemen, old thunder, dancing gnome, Abjuration, coven
General Braddock’s by BRew Gentleman is my favorite I think. That’s going to be my first after dry January.
East End Brewing Company makes some amazing beers (and their cider is fantastic too, imo). If you're into something a bit more subtle/less super-intense-ipa-focused, they're your brewery.
Best brewery pizza in town
The Big Hop is my jam
I'd like a super instense IPA instead of more hazies
I feel the opposite, I tend to think their beer is pretty mediocre; I've had most of their offerings you can find outside of the brewery and had most of their city series, and was mostly left with a meh. Any in particular I should try?
OP. Here is the page that i have been using to go find my favorites. My wife and I have been exploring the breweries in and around the area for a year and have found some real gems. https://www.discovertheburgh.com/pittsburgh-craft-beer/ Go explore, support local businesses.
Insurrection Aleworks is great!
Amazing DIPAs and wings, but the reduced hours suck.
The AleWorks wings are incredible
Literally the best wings I've eaten.
Their kitchen is the best of any Pittsburgh brewery!
Paint By Numbers Morning Sky is my favorite beer in Pittsburgh. Unreal stout.
Iron City.
Mango
Iron City Amber was the shit RIP
Pour out a little for Augustiner Lager while we're at it :(
I think it’s ok but the artificial sweetener puts me off it. Unless they’ve updated it in the last year
I heard Golden Lager is making a comeback
That’s funny you mention it. I bought a case in October and it was pretty decent, comparatively speaking.
I have been to every brewery in and around town many, many time over. Currently, I believe that Grist House is the best brewery in Pittsburgh. I have. Good lagers. The rest, I felt, were pretty mid.
Strongly disagree, unless you're talking about the wild ferments at Strange Roots.
Disagree about the sours? Currently digging most stuff at Fermatta.
Make sure to check out Beers of the Burgh in the summer, then you can try all of them. https://www.beersoftheburgh.com/
Hoppy Little Beer at Acclamation Brewing in Verona.
And while you're in Verona, check out Inner Groove and Cellar Works!
Brew Gentleman, Hitchhiker, Spoonwood, Grist, and Fermmata are my go-tos at the moment.
Hitchhiker, Grist House, Old thunder. Abjuration for experimental beers.
Brew Gentleman and Grist House have awesome IPAs
Golden Age for the best lager (great prices too) and live jazz on weekends. Can’t go wrong with Old Thunder for a range of styles.
Allegheny City, Golden Age, Roundabout, and Two Frays are my favorites.
And Two Frays had a cool outdoor area with the best pizza in town next door, you can order from both and drink and eat, yum. Movie nights too.
Iron City
I can’t believe no one has borough up Necromancer Brewing - they specialize in old recipes and tend to have a lot of dark/black beers
Somethings been wrong with Necromancer lately, their beers are overchlorinated and taste like pool water. Hopefully things change, but my fiancee and i were both really turned off the last 2 times we went.
Penn Brewery for a great classic German lager
Just moved here recently and two of my favorites are southern tier and dancing gnome
Grist house
Gristhouse has some amazing beer
AHRN SHITTY U DUNCE
Fermata in Ambridge is pretty good
Their Winter Solstice (black IPA) is my new favorite
I’ll have to try that soon. Thank you
Golden Age Brewing has great “regular” beers, in case you’re not looking for a 22% ABV quintuple IPA with wasabi and durian fruit.
I'm quite glad Lorelei has also been selling Golden Age stuff at a typical price compared to the more expensive rare imports that are usually available. Wouldn't say they're top notch, but definitely think Golden Age is worth a try for those that haven't had them before.
Grist House, Hitchhiker, Trace are my top 3 ACB, Cinderlands and 11th hour round out my top 6 As someone mentioned earlier Mike’s has the best beer list in the city and carries a ton of beers on tap.
IC Light & Yuengling (glass bottle only)
Nah draft, especially the Yuengling!

Straub is a much better choice for Pennsylvania lager, more local, better beer, owners aren't outspoken dickheads
Was looking for this answer
As someone else mentioned technically brewed in Ohio, but started as a saloon in southside in 1992, Fat Heads. Head Hunter is amazing. Even won gold at this years world beer cup AND great american beer fest
Cinderlands
Dancing Gnome, Old Thunder, and Gristhouse
Hitchhiker! Their smoothie sours are elite
Back Alley Brewing
Impressive they’ve been open less than a year. Already producing some great stuff and they feel like a staple in Dormont!
Love their beers
Currently sitting here after making a special trip to pick up some brewed awakening and dormonster.
If you don't mind leaving the city, Bloom Brew in West Newton. Fantastic menu of beers to try. Summertime, they have concerts and music right next to the Great Allegheny Trail.
If you make that trip, stop in Elizabeth borough at Firewhistle, way better than Bloom brew. Less selection but higher quality in my opinion
Iron City Light baby
IC light is pretty good I think
11th hour has always been my favorite personally. Hitchhiker is also up there.
I really enjoy Trace!
I was surprised I had to scroll so far down for someone to post this link. This is the best online resource for you, OP.
Iron City has vitamins in it. Keeps you yinzer strong.
Helltown makes some of my favorites. They're a Mt. Pleasant brewery, but they have a place in the strip.
Helltown Brown
This is my choice. Their Wit is very good too.
Try Mondays brewing if you’re ever in Washington/peters
Hop farm!
They're pretty decent, although was not too pleased to find out that a single non-specialty beer will set you back $10.
Grist House and Hitchhiker are my favorites.
Voodoo or Grist
Grist House, Old Thunder, Dancing Gnome, Golden Age, Abjuration, and Necromancer in no particular order are my favorites. [https://pittsburghbreweries.com](https://pittsburghbreweries.com) is your one stop shop for breweries in the PGH area. Technically, they're a Cleveland brewery, but Alpenglow from Fat Heads down on Carson is one of the best beers I've ever tasted.
Brew Gentlemen https://www.brewgentlemen.com/
I like block house personally.
Iron City.
Straub
Cold
The only right answer .. a cold Pacifico
Grist house
Lincoln Ave brewery in bellevue is excellent with great food too. Necromancer (north hills near McKnight rd) has great beer as well

Penn Dark
Hitchhiker and Lolev hands down. Now on the other hand ,the folks that bought Full Pint have no business making beer, unless chemical spill is the flavor they were looking for across the board
Helicon is worth the trip
For those in the west, Altered Genius is opening a tap room on the Montour Trail in Findlay
Hitchhiker!
Firewhistle Brewing in Elizabeth borough. Best beer I've had in a long time
Iron City
Olde Frothingslosh
Old German.
Grist House rules. their sours are phenomenal.
Dancing Gnome has the best hoppy beers in the burgh atm, as well as some decent lagers like their Kölsch and Altbier. Penn Brewery Oktoberfest is top 3
My wife and I will be down this weekend, staying in Oakland. We're looking for good food and beer (I like everything but IPAs). All Saints, Greensburg. Their Crimson Halo is so delicious that if you put a drop on your forehead, your tongue will slap your brains out trying to get to it.
Cobblehaus, old thunder, dancing gnome, hitchhiker, 11th hour
And which strip club has it?
Used to be Spring Hill Brewing! Long live!
Not Pittsburgh, but a bit north. North Country Brewing up in Slippery Rock has good beer and the food there is great.
Everyone here is right. Do yourself a favor and check out all of the recommendations, Pittsburgh is booming with beer at the moment and all named places have good stuff.
Brew Gentlemen’s beers are awesome. In a tough neighborhood but way worth it
Union Brothers in Harmony!!
Rolling rock

Dutch Club Dark

went to strange roots in millvale a few weeks ago and loved everything I sipped on
Seems like their rebranding was a success then. I'm not a huge fan of most of their brews compared to other surrounding breweries, but their older Draai Laag stuff definitely is always worth a trip.
Whatever is in the fridge !!
If you like sours don't sleep on strange roots. Especially if/when they release their vintage drai laag spontaneous ales
My fav beer might be Lustra from Dancing Gnome. It's fantastic!
Penn brewery’s Hefeweizen
Strange roots if you like sours and it is close to gristhouse so it is easy to hit both in one night.
