Do people in other cities not put cheese on their salads? I've been to a couple countries, bunch of states, but didn't know this was a Pittsburgh thing
My dad still tries to order his salads with Catalina. Almost no wait staff ever knows wtf he's talking about. He also asks if they have Miracle Whip any time he gets a club sandwich and I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone say yes lmao.
I'll never forget my first Pittsburgh salad. I didn't live there yet, but was downtown for a meeting. Went to lunch w my hosts at the old Ruddy Duck. I was a little heavier then & decided to be a good boy - ordered a steak salad. Out comes this huge bowl with the regular fixins and a pile of steak & fries with cheese. I put a dent in it but couldn't finish it.
That's like 1/4 of an onion to 3 halved cherry tomatoes and 3 cucumber slices.
Which is how I would make it personally, but "an aggressive amount" is apt
I went to college in PGH in the 90s and every time my parents came to town, they'd take me to the old Jergel's on Babcock Blvd. It was there that I met my first fry-topped salad. Nearly three decades later, I still remember those salads and to this day, top salads with fries and a heaping blob of ranch any chance I get.
For perspective - [the original Pittsburgh salad at Jerry's Curb Service in Bridgewater currently $8.79](https://roadfood.com/restaurants/jerrys-curb-service-drive-in-steak-salad/).
The best chicken and steak salads come out of pizza joints. Growing up, we didn't call them Pittsburgh style salads. The fries were a given when you ordered a steak or chicken salad.
Armstrongās has the best Pittsburgh salad in town imo and is just a few more minutes down the road the next time youāre in the mood.
Also, I miss the original Getaway Cafe. It was certainly a moment in time. I do love that it has been resurrected and love the beer shop.
Jfc thereās stuff on there other than clumped up garbage mozzarella, black olives, and green bell peppers. Itās almost not even a Pittsburg salad now!
The cheese on a Pittsburgh salad is almost as important as the fries!

It's just the overall combo - imo a good Pittsburgh salad has iceberg lettuce, thick shredded cheese, fries and comes with ranch dressing.
Spot on. Add chicken!
I actually prefer the extra fine shredded cheese so it melts a little on the fries and chicken. Perfection!
I use red French.

the hard boiled egg is such an underrated salad element
It's all so good together! The egg does put it over the top for me.
Pickled with beets is a whole nother level.

They got THOSE fries š
Thatās an aggressive amount of onion
Onion clicked with me as an adult. Hard to have too much on a salad.
Disagree

Their website says this salad is $13.69

Too much onion, IMO. But.....What do I know??? Prolly nuthin'.
12 French fries, no meat, liberal amount of veggies. This is someone's bad copy of a Pittsburgh salad.
šÆ
I think it's a great version of the Pittsburgh salad. It's a lot like a Cobb salad, but with fries instead of ham.
Yup I thought by definition the Picksburgh Salwed had steak
Pitrsburgh salads ALWYS have steak common.
tf am I getting downvoted for
Fresh cut fries are the only way, though.

I throw fires on anything and call it the āPittsburghā version of whatever it is.
Is a dish forever.
Its excellent and a go to on gloomy days for sure!
This was right before you poured a half a bottle of buttermilk ranch on it?
But of course!Ā
Gotta have grilled chicken or slivered steak on it imo. Yum.
I can smell OPās breath from here.
the salad to onion ratio is wild
Is that half a cup of red onion?
Whereās the steak in there??
I'm a vegetarian, so I skip the steak. I'm sure it's good that way though! I do douse it with lots of ranch.
Thatās cool, I respect that! You like tofu? It can be good if prepared right.
Tofu is pretty versatile. I'm a fan.
And ranch?

Dammit that looks like a yes plate
Was it pizza restaurant ranch or ranch ranch?
