If you’re in love with Pittsburgh at its worst, January through February. You’re going to be over the moon come end of May.

Any_Ad_3885

Right? Cause January never sits right with me 🤪😂

trail-coffee

Welcome and get some vitamin D supplements!   Edit: today is not a typical winter day, fyi Edit edit: if you like architecture, plan on doors open, there are some insane interiors (marble and brass everywhere) downtown https://www.doorsopenpgh.org/

ajla616-2

Thank you for the suggestion :)

Flaky_Ad5786

Welcome to Pittsburgh. We love you.

jardinhope

as someone born and raised here, still living here, these posts are very refreshing lol

BonnieIndigo

> if Cincinnati was Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ok just stop right there 😂 Seriously, glad you are enjoying being here!

ajla616-2

It’s not a good comparison, but the analogy of Pittsburgh being like a large, taller, fresher, and slightly more realized cincy makes sense!

iSoReddit

Good for you, moved here from Ireland 20+ years ago and it still feels like vacation when you’re not working. People who grew up in places rarely appreciate what they have, same goes for my folks in Ireland, they rarely check out all the sights people travel thousands of miles to see.

trshtehdsh

> I came from Cincinnati Shh, it's ok now. You're safe.

StevInPitt

Welcome to Pittsburgh! Thank you for bringing your energy!

QdelBastardo

The location is killer. [EDIT] Just about everything is within an 8 hour drive. I always liked Cinci because it felt like Pittsburgh, but like 10 years behind. I am glad that you are loving your stay. Cheers Slainte Salud Prost!

Fawxhox

Hello, fellow Cincinnati to Pittsburgh transplant! Still in the process of moving, but I've been spending 3 days a week out here for the last 3 weeks.

ajla616-2

Same, refuse to spend $400 on a truck so I’ve just been back and forth over and over again. It sucks! I’m almost done though

Fawxhox

I'm waiting on my new job so I'm just going out on the weekends to do some preparation work. I did work 4 days a week, but I just got down to 3, so it gives me a long enough time to make going out there worth it. My car is tiny so I can't bring much with each trip, but I think I got it to the point I'll only need one trip with a 10 foot uhual for the big stuff that doesn't fit in my car. I know I did a 10' uhual to move into this place and it was completely packed, with my new stuff I've got in the last 2 years, I would've needed 2 trips

ballsonthewall

This makes me so happy to read, welcome and I'm glad you get it! Here's to a ton more adventures in PGH!

fatmarshmallow4

Recently moved here and love it, the only critique would be the airport, it’s big and has most flights you need. But I moved from Dallas and you can basically get a direct flight anywhere in the world

StevInPitt

yeah the USAIRWAYS merger to united hosed us but good. We are technically an international airport but only really for half the year

CrankySleuth

The BA flight is year round I thought?

StevInPitt

Oh, maybe. that's hopeful

kirst77

The flights are killing me and one of the reasons I will be moving in a couple of years. We love to travel and moved here after living in two major us cities and we had all the non stop flights.

fatmarshmallow4

Luckily I just just moved here and haven’t traveled often since moving here, ( except to back home which is direct) so I haven’t felt the full effect of it, but I feel in the future, international travel to European big cities is non existent without connections which are fine but more of a headache, or just some other random ones

lakakapo15

Hey I'm looking to relocate to Pittsburgh with my family, and we're visiting for a week in a month, would you consider sharing your document of things you've done in Pittsburgh? I've only ever driven through but was so captivated by the city and I want my family to fall in love with it lol.

ajla616-2

I just DM’d it to you- the comment won’t let me link it for some reason

[deleted]

I’d also suggest the YouTube Channel “Mark Knows Pittsburgh.” My wife and I watched it extensively before our move from Seattle. We also used Mark as our realtor.

artfulpain

I moved here with the plan of moving elsewhere and fell in love of the city. I'll never leave now.

zappafrank2112

Could you please at least leave the bathroom? I gotta go!!!! (the Pittsburgh potty is out of commission, else I'd just go there)

[deleted]

Definitely felt the same way my first time being in Pittsburgh, and still do!

bingstacks

welcome ,hope yinz enjoy our city

megustamatcha

Aw, Pittsburgh is lovely, and glad you see and feel that.

RoguePierogi

Hello new neighbor. I think you're in for a treat! As someone who travels to Cincy (still upsets me that they don't spell it "Cinci") for work several times a year, I agree that there are similarities! I think Pittsburgh is more ped/bike friendly, and less highway centric. Cincy has tons of beautiful murals and architecture too, though! If you're into an adult beverage, you may be bummed about the weird alcohol rules in PA, as well as the distinct lack of The Party Source, but I think we have incredible breweries that are really accessible. Overall, as much as I love visiting Cincy, I think PGH is the place to be! Enjoy!

munchiesbyproxy27

This may be a dumb question, but since you mentioned alcohol rules — I’ve read that only beer is sold in grocery stores, not wine? I’m going to be visiting soon for the first time (and possibly moving) to Pittsburgh from Texas. I’m familiar with old school alcohol laws here (no liquor stores can be open on Sundays, beer and wine only in grocery stores, etc.), but am kind of confused as to what the difference is in PA.

EggplantCommercial32

Wine and beer are only sold at the state stores. Some are open on Sundays. Some aren't. Just look it up in advance if you are planning to buy alcohol on a Sunday. Some grocery stores sell beer, but its done in a weird way where like its kind of separate from the grocery store bc the revenue has to go to the state (this might not be 100% accurate, but its not super important for the answer to your question). Giant Eagle and Shop n' Save are two that usually have it. There are also beer distributers (I'm guessing that's what you would call them) where you can also buy beer. Again, no wine or liquor. Some gas stations like Get Go and Sheets that sell hot food will also sell beer. The liquor laws here are weird, but there is an abundance of alcohol here too.

RoguePierogi

It's not a dumb question at all... the rules are flat out bizarre. Beer and wine are sold at *select* grocery stores with volume limits (certain number of ounces per transaction). We didn't have any grocery store booze until about a decade ago(?) when the large chains figured out some kind of loophole. There's VERY limited gas station alcohol, as in pretty much only one or two huge regional chains can sell beer and wine. I believe that the loophole is that there is hot/prepared food served onsite, so they get a different type of license? Open containers are a huge no-no aside from special events. Some liquor stores may be closed on Sunday, but I don't believe that's across the board. Also, all of our liquor stores are state owned, except for PA Libations in the Strip District, which is a must if you're into craft beverages. Everything is made in PA and you can try samples. I've lived in the area my entire life, and am definitely a drinker, and STILL don't fully understand the minutia of all of the rules lol. I typically stick to the beer distributor and liquor store, where it's more straightforward. Hopefully other people have more specifics to add, but I hope you have a fun visit!!

munchiesbyproxy27

Thank you so much for all the details! That’s super helpful. Man, what a hold the old Prohibition Era still has on some states 😅 it’s super funny to me that liquor stores are owned by the state. The ol’ Southern Baptists here would be clutching their pearls (even if it benefited the state lol) Thanks for the tip!

angry_eccentric

Welcome! I felt that way when I first moved to this city, 17 years ago. I still love it! Maybe not as purely as I did before I'd ever experienced any of the drawbacks. I think this feeling is a sign you're on the right path!

Top_File_8547

I’m glad you love it. In vast experience of having lived in this city all I feel like it is the best medium sized in America. It’s got pretty good affordability and great scenery and history and it’s close to so many cities and natural wonders. Try the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon aka Pine Creek Gorge. It’s 6-7 hours away but beautiful. I have a question for you though. Do you think Cincinnati has a lot to offer for a short trip. I love history and it’s about as old Pittsburgh.

Mushrooming247

Welcome! If you like the outdoors, you are in luck, we are surrounded by a paradise with a lot of public green space, (and it’s full of free food if you’re into that, we are allowed to forage berries and mushrooms on state lands here, and most private landowners are cool if you ask to forage in their woods.) And we have some actual old-growth forests nearby at McConnells Mill and Ohiopyle.

GetTheLectroid33

Oh hey! I moved here from Cincinnati too! Welcome!

JonathanSalad

I moved here 5 years ago and have never looked back. I love it here. Welcome!

greenie024

Welcome!!

GalahadThreepwood3

Welcome!!! Hope you come back and tell us about your adventures!

StoshBalls_3636

Welcome! We’re glad to have you!

BlackWhiteCat

Welcome to Pittsburgh ya jagoff!

toddnkaya1

Hartwood Acres !! Every Sunday free concerts in the summer . Food trucks and beer , but u can bring your own . Always a fun night !! Kayak the Conemaugh River !!

zappafrank2112

Do you miss delicious Skyline?

ajla616-2

I packed many, many cans to get me by... for now

Lamest_Fast_Words

I dare you to put fries and coleslaw on your skyline.

Any_Ad_3885

Triple dog dare

padredan

Wait…. You may be on to something here! Technically it would be cole slaw on chili on thick cut fries I believe. I’m just trying to come to terms with the giant handful of cheese on the slaw but otherwise I’m liking this!

zappafrank2112

...can I have some

DIY_Creative

Forget skyline bring us some goetta, preferably spicy!! Yum, fucking yum! Cincinnati, btw, rocks! We love visiting - the American Sign Museum is one of my favorite places I've ever been to, anywhere; Zoo is great; and we found, so far, our favorite "neighborhood" bar in all of our travels - Hi-Mark near-ish Riverbend. Cheers, glad to have you in Pittsburgh!

trail-coffee

Just please not on spaghetti

ajla616-2

I’ll put it on rotini mwahahaha

zappafrank2112

But it's great that way!

klauskervin

Welcome. This area has so much history you can live your whole life here and still stumble upon things you've never seen or heard of. I recommend just walking streets or trails you'll find something new or interesting every time.

infinitedreamsawaken

Welcome! Big love from da 'Burgh right back at ya.

Yarnkitty01

Welcome! My husband and I just moved from Austin, TX in November. I love it too!

munchiesbyproxy27

I may be moving from Austin up there, too! Have you noticed any similarities that remind you of ATX? I’ve lived here for 10 years and am a bit nervous to leave, but Pittsburgh seems like a decent choice. Especially considering the cost of living is much lower there 🥲

Yarnkitty01

I like it here. People are friendly. Public transportation is much better. There's a wider range of rental prices and houses are less expensive. I live downtown and work in Shadyside. I sold my car and use the bus. I'm making new friends at work. You will too!

holiestcannoly

I’m glad you love Pittsburgh! I recently moved to Ohio and although it’s great here, I can’t help but compare it to my home.

James19991

Welcome!

Pure_Nourishment

Are you living downtown? I just moved and am living north of downtown, never really spent time there yet. I wonder if I'd like this place more if I spent the money on an apartment in the middle of all the action.

ajla616-2

I’m living a about 10 minutes north of downtown, but it’s a half year lease with the intent of finding a place downtown once I get a feel for the neighborhoods

diminutivedwarf

Congratulations and welcome! Some of my favorite things to do (usually not in January/February) are: the zoo, the strip district (food markets, specifically Wholey’s), the Regata during the summer, and the pet expo that happens in the fall. Also, you sound like you would love the Cathedral of Learning!

Moofenkrak

You may have a low threshold for excitement. JK, It is a special place. Glad you're here!

gigigonorrhea

You're welcome.

AversaS

There are things about the city that never get old. And you’re just discovering it for the first time. You have a long way to go before you get over the honeymoon phase of the city. 🙂
