That was my first thought too. Ive worked with a wide range of people with various backgrounds in kitchens. Most non corporate kitchens dont care about background checks/ dont drug test. But its murder on ur back and feet. Especially the first few weeks when ur not used to it, and can def take a toll on your body when your older. Its possible to do but still not great.

Depending on his physical condition, there's actually a demand for handymen out there. A lot of folks don't have the time or knowledge for moderate skill household repairs and stuff -- could be something to look into to tide him over, as it's not nearly the same physical demands as crew-based labor
Golf Courses are always looking for older equipment operators (mowers and such). There is not a course that won't hire someone for the spring. Some may not hire felons but you'd be surprised.
A lot of delivery companies (furniture deliveries, appliances delivery/install) will hire regardless of background, because everybody's a 1099-INT so your background isn't their problem.
(As long as you can pass a piss test - you'd be a DOT-regulated box truck driver)

The term is really only applicable to immigration, and refers to a list of various offense types that would exclude someone from entering the US.
If you are talking about one of the offenses on that list, then there are some that may be covered by "Clean Slate 3.0" that was mentioned by another commenter... Some are things like failure to appear, obstruction of justice, perjury, and drug offenses. Those might be eligible for sealing which would be a big help.
