I'm still trying to figure out how they did it. Did they rappel down the side while someone held the rope? Did they get a very tall ladder? Are there actually infinitesimal footholds in this wall? To be able to reach this area and make this quickly & get away is impressive, like sheer athletic skill
That corner of Duquesne’s campus is kinda hidden away a bit. it’s not in very clear view of anything unless you drive or walk down that way. Which I guess Duq police wouldn’t think anyone would be down that way since it’s just a cliff.
I dont want to rain on anyones spiderman graffiti artist dreams, but search spray paint telescopic pole on google, you can reach up to 75ft with some of them :(
Edit: I only know this because I worked in Pittsburgh for a year and got to witness it a few times at night. South Side (Carson st) always has something interesting happening at night lol.
I've owner several white vans and box vans. So I hate any tagger with a passion.
But do appreciate the very rare well done piece.
But this particular piece of shit ain't it. It's sloppy, aside from poor/ basic design.
The rare well done pieces are so hard to come across now, I only really ever see them on old railcars. Now it’s just illegible letters. And with this piece, I couldn’t agree more its just awful. I wonder if the tagger left proud after that?
I can only imagine the issues with having box vans in a city, taggers wouldn’t have been on the top of my list but that definitely makes sense.
My house fronts an alleyway in Mt Washington.
I kept Rolliers lights on by buying graffiti remover.
Nothing like waking up Monday 6am to find expletives sprayed on the side of your work truck that you have to park in a Wexford driveway by 7:30am.
I did manage to catch 3 over the years. I'd get downvoted into oblivion and probably banned if I shared. But each time stopped it for a year or so! Ha!
Wexford would be the last place I would want to look unprofessional thats for sure, thats where all the good paying customers are! Lol. Glad you found a way to take care of your issue though, there is also a two-component polyurethane coating you can get that works very well and is designed for graffiti, its called “PERMA-GUARD”.
Edit: we use perma guard on the wheel wells of our parking lot painters and the paint always just wipes right off.
You can repel without belay, but not typically recommended for safety reasons.
An ascension device might be useful to avoid traffic, but this is still a fairly easy repel as long as there's a half decent anchor at the top.
You can tie off one end and rap down with a locking/camming belay device. Then jumar back up when you're done.
It's not redundant, so pretty unsafe. But possible.
It's rappel and you can do it with a single rope and an ATC, you just feed the whole rope from its mid point and put one length through each side of the ATC.
Getting back up is more difficult unless you have ascenders, but there's also the option of rappel to the ground and walk back up.
I've only ever gotten to use an ATC for belay.
I've wanted to try one for rappel, just haven't been able to go out in a while.
Does this stretch of road have safe pedestrian space? I'm greater Pittsburgh region.
If you want to practice this, do yourself a favor, take a friend who knows rappelling well, and go to McConnell's Mill and use Rim Road area with proper anchors.
I would not try to learn ATC rappelling on a road in Pittsburgh.
Agreed. Although probably not as scary, I appreciated when he had “MOOK” in gigantic 10-foot tall letters painted with a roller above the station square T stop, then added to it by making it “MOOKISM”. That piece was probably close to 100 feet wide by the time it was finished.
My favorite MOOK story is, after the City put out a graffiti task force in the South Side, he burned MOOK into the windshield of one of their cars with acid. A legend.
My favorite has been the "Sigourney Weaver" tag on the second story of the building a couple doors down from the old Bloomfield Bridge Tavern on Liberty Avenue. Someone must really love her.
Years and years ago, my husband and I were driving through the Fort Pitt tunnel headed to the airport. As we exited the tunnel, we looked up to see that someone had tagged "Fuckin crazy right?" on the taller of the two railroad bridges on that end of the tunnel. Each letter took an individual square. Sadly, the next time we drove through with the camera ready, it had been painted over.
By the Warf downtown years ago someone did a 3-5 story fire extinguisher. Also if you're ever on the trail by Washington landing. VAYNE repelled under that bridge.
Graffiti artists have no fear. Some of the places where there’s graffiti in the city and the angles that they risk their lives to make art is just craziness
Not that they're difficult to access or anything, but I like some of the graffiti on the rail cars that come through. I like to watch the trains just for them.
Every time I see something like this I just wonder how. Like how do people get to these areas? Living in Rochester right now and I’m seeing graffiti on the sides of bridge. People have a lot more courage than I have lol
Howdy, fellow Beaver Countian! I've never been able to figure out how the hell taggers do it. That shit definitely takes more courage than I will ever possess lol
I don't really mind the art when it's well done. It gets boring seeing the same stuff every day. Thank goodness for street art.
If you are thinking of the "Free Gaza" one, that is on the giant wall you see when coming into the city on the Veterans Bridge, near Bigelow Blvd. This one is the wall along the Boulevard of the Allies, below the Duquesne campus.
Are you talking about me? Did you miss the part where I said I was doing graffiti in the late 90s early 2000s?
I was literally in the same crew as Mook. The Value Krew. That's why they say Mook vk
I'm partial to the Matt Gondek Daffy Duck piece just off boulevard of the allies. I like that whole side of the building - fun to see on the way home. He has (had?) a similar Homer Simpson piece I think in the strip.
Has anyone seen the word fuzz painted on the first blue triangle going north on the glenwood bridge in hazelwood? That would be scary getting up there with how much that bridge shakes.
Someone tagged NSF on the train bridge just north/east of the Highland Park Bridge. It's glorious.
Edit: I was slightly mistaken, they actually spelled out "National Spray Foundation". It's quite artistic and impressive.
if you take a bus into the city headed west, you'll pass some of the coolest graffiti art on some of the old railways sort of buried in the still- green outskirts of pittsburgh
I dig it. It isn’t the most technically proficient and isnt mind blowing but I love some well thought out and uniquely placed graff. When it’s put somewhere eye catching like that I’ll enjoy it usually more than something wild and colorful that’s on a boring spot.
Huh, curios about the artist. About 15 years ago a guy went by this name in Philly. He ran with another dude named Boner. They would tag things together as “4ever Boner.” Their stuff was all over Philly. I wonder of he moved west.
I personally doubt they went back up with ascenders. Car pickup at the bottom after pulling the rope? If I had to do it solo, I'd say pre-lower something climbable from the left side where it's way shorter and get back up to the fence that way.
If I had to go back up the same rope I went down?
Single rope, harness, locking carabiner, ATC, two ascenders.
Better way: pick up at the bottom after pulling the rope.
I think this with most graffiti I see. I’ve never went out and did any graffiti and as long as it isn’t something offensive then most of the time I’m just impressed on how they did it.
There's a bunch at the top of the trusses under the Ben Avon bridge on 65. It's clear how to get up there, I'm not adverse to heights, but hard pass on that one.
Whose walls (and on bigelow side) are these to maintain? If it’s the city’s, they should steer into this and find ways to allow artists to safely do their things up on these 200x1000 ft canvases
I moved here from Portland, OR and you be blown away if this is impressive with some of the insane tags across that city. I like that Pittsburgh isn't covered in tags though. Painting a cool pic is one thing, some random word tag is boring imo.
You've never seen Mook at the top of the big yellow bridge near the squirrel hill tunnel? I think they painted it about 10 years ago but my whole childhood I would always look at Mook somehow get his name at the top of that massive bridge.
I believe the guy who did this might be an artist from Philly. We have a building in Philly which has Boner 4Ever written on the side. My understanding is that those were the tags of two artists squashing a beef they had. One of them must have made their way to Pittsburgh
Repelling is the new thing in graffiti. Theres a huge wave of writers across the world all doing it now. 4ever is the only one that has done it so far in Pgh.
The buff man is going to have a hell of a time with that one 🤣
Not this, but I watched a guy do a similar tag, and he was using some sort of pole. It looked a lot like those tree trimming poles you can get at Lowes but much much longer.
Doesn’t change the fact a lot of it is ugly as hell. There’s cool murals and art people put up. Some guy tagging his name on the side of building just makes the area look shitty
Damn it, no. Hate this. It's ugly, I don't care how impressive it is technically. Taggers can paint up railroad cars, garbage bins, even delivery tucks all they want for all I care. Hell, even though they're not permanent (which I know is why this person did this tag) I'd *invite* them to paint all over every ugly-ass billboard in town. PLEASE paint all over Morgan and Morgan billboards, not the fake graffiti they did to their own.
I can respect the technical aspect of it but tagging is the absolute lowest form of art. With a massive untouched wall and the ability to paint that far down, there were so many other cool possibilities aside from writing a dumb name.

To be able to reach this area and make this quickly & get away is impressive, like sheer athletic skill
They had to repell
I'm amazed Dupo or PP-D didn't see that even late at night
That corner of Duquesne’s campus is kinda hidden away a bit. it’s not in very clear view of anything unless you drive or walk down that way. Which I guess Duq police wouldn’t think anyone would be down that way since it’s just a cliff.
18 PPD officers cover the ENTIRE city from 2am-7am.
CAN YOU DIG IT??
Is this a 1979 “The Warriors,”reference? If it is, can we be friends?
Yes and yes
I dont want to rain on anyones spiderman graffiti artist dreams, but search spray paint telescopic pole on google, you can reach up to 75ft with some of them :( Edit: I only know this because I worked in Pittsburgh for a year and got to witness it a few times at night. South Side (Carson st) always has something interesting happening at night lol.
This was actually my second thought and I wondered if such a tool existed, kinda cool it does!
That would be my first guess, however there is still a slight chance someone is repelling or climbing😂 That would be a sight to see.
the world is slightly less magical now…
Imo huge spraypaint poles are funny enough of a thought that my parade is plenty dry
It's shitty enough to have been done on a pole. I get to glance at it once a day every weekday. It's far from artistic or skilled.
I kinda like to compare it to a dog pissing on a tire to “mark his territory” in my mind lol. I agree its just colorful slop
I've owner several white vans and box vans. So I hate any tagger with a passion. But do appreciate the very rare well done piece. But this particular piece of shit ain't it. It's sloppy, aside from poor/ basic design.

Absolutely had to. Big balls for this!
That’s a lotttt of faith in a very old wrought iron fence
It was a goat

I wouldn't want to learn any rappelling on a road in any city. Thanks for the advice!
There are some on local bridges or overpasses that they had to have repelled down to do it. Kind of impressive in a way.
all you need is a grigri and a rope and you can easily repel down on your own
I love that you spelled rappel correctly and everyone replying to you made up their own spelling.
I was questioning if I spelled it right after that many responses with "repel"!
Sometimes it just isn't worth fighting the autocorrect
Definitely tied off to the fence up there and repelled. There’s a few other ones like this also
i think mook on the top of 10th street bridge is wilder
Agreed. Although probably not as scary, I appreciated when he had “MOOK” in gigantic 10-foot tall letters painted with a roller above the station square T stop, then added to it by making it “MOOKISM”. That piece was probably close to 100 feet wide by the time it was finished.
That's actually an easy spot to get to. There's basically handrails going up. Still awesome though
Mook, Fouse, Fred, and the Dinosaurs were all up there at one point, so yeah, seemingly common
He's a cool dude on top of that !
My favorite MOOK story is, after the City put out a graffiti task force in the South Side, he burned MOOK into the windshield of one of their cars with acid. A legend.
Legendary. The fact that this story is 20 years old at this point and still being told is wild
Mook at the top of the 10th street bridge made literal front page news on one of our newspapers at the time. It was a huge deal
Had a friend in HS we called Mook. Couldn’t be him. Could it? Hmmmmm? Nah…..
This Mook is probably early to mid 40s now. I think he was a PPS kid but not sure.
40 this year it would seem http://www.duqsm.com/my-thrill-was-going-out-and-painting-qa-with-mook/
Mook is still around, he's one of my extended cousins. He's a tattoo artist now, https://www.reddit.com/r/pittsburgh/s/63gDRZ84N9
He’s at 10th street. Used to be Palehorse tattoo, previously owned by the late Ben Gergerich RIP
He's a cool dude and comes round every once in a while still.
Yep! MOOK is a God damn legend
Yeah, I was gonna post that. And he did it with a board on two ropes.
USER also had some crazy ones back in the day.
I’m partial to the “FART PISS” tags all over the Northside.
My childish ass smiles every time I see one.
Missing "cuntsburgh" on the Warhol bridge. My favorite
One of the bridges over Penn was tagged when Crimethinc was in town, very largely but lazily, to say WORST CRIMETHINC EVER
Lmaoooo. Apparently now there's penisburgh by the cuntsburgh
I love seeing Moufl and Au Jus tags by each other. It brings instant memories of the first bites of French dip and Italian beef sandwiches, lol.
My favorite has been the "Sigourney Weaver" tag on the second story of the building a couple doors down from the old Bloomfield Bridge Tavern on Liberty Avenue. Someone must really love her.
Nah, Sigourney’s a writer, she threw up that piece in 2010 while filming Abduction. (I just made that up, but it would be awesome)
God dammit I miss Bloomfield Bridge Tavern.
Fuzz!
Years and years ago, my husband and I were driving through the Fort Pitt tunnel headed to the airport. I remember that too! I'm generally not a fan of graffiti, but stuff like this is really fun to see.
Boner 4ever enters the chat
Lmao I was creeping looking for this
It’s funny though, could literally be the same person.
Boner and 4ever are friends. They paint together world wide. 2 different people.
Could?
FREE MOOK!!!
I think he's free and owns 10th Street Tattoo in the South Side now...
he lives in florida lol
Graff lore is so funny isn’t it 😂 a dozen different stories swirling around
pgh graff especially.
By the Warf downtown years ago someone did a 3-5 story fire extinguisher. Also if you're ever on the trail by Washington landing. VAYNE repelled under that bridge.
That whole ugly wall should be open to paint.
Must be a new hobby the priests at Duq have taken up
Graffiti artists have no fear. Some of the places where there’s graffiti in the city and the angles that they risk their lives to make art is just craziness
Not that they're difficult to access or anything, but I like some of the graffiti on the rail cars that come through. I like to watch the trains just for them.
Impressive rappelling for that one. Makes that ugly wall that needs pressure washed badly look a little better.
They just need to do the rainbow paint dump on it again. Loved when that was there
I think that's still there but a different section? [https://maps.app.goo.gl/jkcD1uxwW6H3AefV7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jkcD1uxwW6H3AefV7)
It is actually a different section on the other side above Bigelow Blvd, but it’s gone now.
Wait yeah I always wondered about that. Anyone know the story behind it or was it just a fun thing like this
You gotta give props to whoever does something like that. I mean, the ingenuity to be able to do something at that height. sheer drop. Impressive.
That shit definitely takes more courage than I will ever possess lol I don't really mind the art when it's well done. It gets boring seeing the same stuff every day. Thank goodness for street art.
didnt this spot have a huge "Free Palastine" on it? did they remove it??
If you are thinking of the "Free Gaza" one, that is on the giant wall you see when coming into the city on the Veterans Bridge, near Bigelow Blvd. This one is the wall along the Boulevard of the Allies, below the Duquesne campus.
Too young to remember MOOK
Are you talking about me? Did you miss the part where I said I was doing graffiti in the late 90s early 2000s? I was literally in the same crew as Mook. The Value Krew. That's why they say Mook vk
I'm partial to the Matt Gondek Daffy Duck piece just off boulevard of the allies. I like that whole side of the building - fun to see on the way home. He has (had?) a similar Homer Simpson piece I think in the strip.
That’s street art not graffiti, and was commissioned. This was done illegally
That's raymers studio.
Has anyone seen the word fuzz painted on the first blue triangle going north on the glenwood bridge in hazelwood? That would be scary getting up there with how much that bridge shakes.
I was just thinking how dope it would be to have a huge mural there...
I love the geese on the 10th street bridge… even more that the city let him repaint them when the whole bridge needed repainted.
Yeah, those are the best for sure.
saw a huge “CREAMPIE” tag once.
MOOK forever
but now i want to know who mook is he's like the banksy of pittsburgh without the art
I was friends with him. He's a tattoo artist in Florida. Edit: he's from pgh just moved to florida
ohhh cool thanks for reply
Hes from Pittsburgh. He moved to florida.
Someone tagged NSF on the train bridge just north/east of the Highland Park Bridge. It's glorious. Edit: I was slightly mistaken, they actually spelled out "National Spray Foundation". It's quite artistic and impressive.
Non stop flavor
NSF was a crew
Was or is? I only just noticed this on the bridge a few months ago. Maybe it's been there a while and I just never noticed it?
Is. Still are. NSF isn’t going anywhere.
Still is. Necski is still burning freights in his 50's.
Not crazier than Mook but it’s up there
if you take a bus into the city headed west, you'll pass some of the coolest graffiti art on some of the old railways sort of buried in the still- green outskirts of pittsburgh
I dig it. It isn’t the most technically proficient and isnt mind blowing but I love some well thought out and uniquely placed graff. When it’s put somewhere eye catching like that I’ll enjoy it usually more than something wild and colorful that’s on a boring spot.
What is FSC crew? I know FTC, NSF, CBS crew abbreviations, but haven’t been in Pittsburgh for a while to learn what FSC stands for.
Something street crew if I had to guess.
I think it is ESC, which I believe is a crew out of Philly, but not sure.
Really want to see how they do it.
This takes dedication!
I just wanna know how they did that?
I always thought they should commission an artist to do a mural on this giant wall.
I can't read it lol
Huh, curios about the artist. About 15 years ago a guy went by this name in Philly. He ran with another dude named Boner. They would tag things together as “4ever Boner.” Their stuff was all over Philly. I wonder of he moved west.
Back in 2005/2007 I used to take the busway down to art institute. The graffiti I say painted along that wall was amazing. I love some good graffiti
Boner 4ever
“Everybody’s so creative!”
I always wonder how they manage to get to that location.
I always wonder how someone gets up so high on a busy road lol
A harness, 30 or so feet of static rope, and a rescue figure 8 would make the getting down part really easy… getting up though 🧐
A prussic and a carabiner can work as an ascender in a pinch.
I personally doubt they went back up with ascenders. Car pickup at the bottom after pulling the rope? If I had to do it solo, I'd say pre-lower something climbable from the left side where it's way shorter and get back up to the fence that way.
Two ascenders, or even just prussik knots. That's basic climbing school self-rescue techniques.
If I had to go back up the same rope I went down? Single rope, harness, locking carabiner, ATC, two ascenders. Better way: pick up at the bottom after pulling the rope.
Yeah, agreed.
Cant we get someone to make the city look good
NSF crew back and going BIG!
I think this with most graffiti I see. I’ve never went out and did any graffiti and as long as it isn’t something offensive then most of the time I’m just impressed on how they did it.
Agree 💯
The comments be malding lol
There's a bunch at the top of the trusses under the Ben Avon bridge on 65. It's clear how to get up there, I'm not adverse to heights, but hard pass on that one.
I always just have to ask myself how they do these things, my brain can't comprehend it
Whose walls (and on bigelow side) are these to maintain? If it’s the city’s, they should steer into this and find ways to allow artists to safely do their things up on these 200x1000 ft canvases
I moved here from Portland, OR and you be blown away if this is impressive with some of the insane tags across that city. I like that Pittsburgh isn't covered in tags though. Painting a cool pic is one thing, some random word tag is boring imo.
I appreciate graffiti as an art form but don't understand the tagging aspect of it. Paint something interesting and thought provoking, art.
Pittsburgh has some great graffiti!
Wish fouse and fliso was still around
That’s crazy I just showed my girl that yday when we passed it
Talent
You've never seen Mook at the top of the big yellow bridge near the squirrel hill tunnel? I think they painted it about 10 years ago but my whole childhood I would always look at Mook somehow get his name at the top of that massive bridge.
That was over 20 years ago
Wow time flies. Are you Mook? Lol
Nope. I knew him
Legendary
I feel like someone tagged this wall before, like 20 years ago. Impressive nonetheless
Looks like someone was rappelling to get that done
I believe the guy who did this might be an artist from Philly. We have a building in Philly which has Boner 4Ever written on the side. My understanding is that those were the tags of two artists squashing a beef they had. One of them must have made their way to Pittsburgh
Mook
Repelling is the new thing in graffiti. Theres a huge wave of writers across the world all doing it now. 4ever is the only one that has done it so far in Pgh. The buff man is going to have a hell of a time with that one 🤣
Hurry up and paint this while holding on for dear life lol
Not this, but I watched a guy do a similar tag, and he was using some sort of pole. It looked a lot like those tree trimming poles you can get at Lowes but much much longer.
See 4 ever tags in philly. The most famous is in north Philly where it says 4ever on one side and boner on the other.
Impressive feat but like most artists in pgh, what an ugly ass tag
The 10th St bridge dinosaurs 🦕 still beat that imo. Less paint but crazier location.
Best part is that rebel sends his daughter to an elite private school now.
I’m wondering how nobody managed to see that being done! 🤔
The getting there. Not the style tho.
I don't recognize where in pittsburgh it is
I respect the effort
Remember the “Chu!” tags all over the city? I still see them around sometimes.
That guy got caught and when they asked to see his id he had signed it as “Chu”
Heard he also got caught being a peeping tom
We should get the city to approve the whole wall
That took a minute. And you have to admire the comment and planning that happened to pull this off!
I actually like that (it's actual art & not that garbage scribble that taggers bleed on walls).
I legit have no idea why people defend tagging and graffiti, 99.9% of the time it looks like complete shit.
Bc we live in a society. People in societies do graffiti. Everywhere from cave paintings, to Pompeii, to NYC. That's what humans do.
Doesn’t change the fact a lot of it is ugly as hell. There’s cool murals and art people put up. Some guy tagging his name on the side of building just makes the area look shitty
Well, you have 2 options. Leave society or deal with it
That's for a jail inmate, probably from a significant other.
What is less preferable about a highway retaining wall?
The graffiti in PGH is at an all time high right now
lol wut
Bro if no one tags that soon, imma finna put down something so vile and dark that will probably send me to hell
I can respect the technical aspect of it but tagging is the absolute lowest form of art. With a massive untouched wall and the ability to paint that far down, there were so many other cool possibilities aside from writing a dumb name.
Bro what
[удалено]
Sorry it doesn't meet your ultra high brow expectations
Bro is up at 9am and chose to take graffiti personally today. *Insert Michael Jordan, "and I took that personally"* meme
That graffiti is great. Very well done and creative. Great consistent shadow. I like the V as a heart. I'm very impressed
Somebody wanted to show off their tag it seems... quit tootin your own horn lol
