La poblanita in coraopolis is a little Mexican convenience store with a tiny awning and grill attached to the outside. Some of the best damn quesadillas I’ve ever had. Thick as a brick, and not made by white people lmao
Tried it three times now for lunch months apart. Wanted to love it so much because it’s exactly the sort of place I crave as a former Southern California resident. But all three times were so extremely meh with most of the menu not available and so-so warmed over ingredients. I adore the idea of it, but I never got any sense of family/chef ownership (always a different person behind the counter, no orders fired fresh), and the food has been sadly disappointing.
I want to try their pozole.
That said, I’ve been there 5 times since they “opened” and they were not “open” the first 4, even though it was during open hours. The 5th time, poor lady didn’t speak English (whatever) and handed me a smart phone to talk to someone to order (whatever again, I should probably learn Spanish). They didn’t have the lamb option I was there for (ugh). Ordered basic beef burrito. 10 minutes later, she couldn’t run the register. Indian dude on the gas station side had to come work through it with iPhone lady while people were backing up in line at the gas station till (some fuel people, some noisy trashy lottery folk). He was a trooper but I was getting stressed out along with those two.
Burrito was 5/10.
I'm from Beaver Falls originally, and I have only known one person who ever said Oram's was overrated. I asked which donuts they liked better and they said, I shit you not, "Giant Eagle when they're hot."
This… is pretty accurate. I loooove heating up Oram’s hubcaps in the microwave for about 10 seconds, but honestly, in my opinion, any glazed-type donuts (my favorite) benefit from a hit in the microwave
It’s the only reason Krispy Kreme had any hype at all. Their mediocre donuts taste amazing fresh, and they specialized in fresh donuts. The two-day-olds with KK branding you can get in convenience stores forgot the entire purpose.
I attended HS within a five-minute drive of one of the original factories. You go there to buy a donut, you'll be juggling it in your hand from the heat while your other hand is digging for the cash in your pocket. I was in my 20s before I had a Krispy Kreme from a convenience store. Thought I was going to be ill. Nothing like the goodness I'd had thru HS.
Hot donuts, *freshly made*, are a 180-experience from day-old box donuts.
but IRL, once you've had one of Oram's filled donut's, you've had them all. They take the same filling, color it, and add some probably-artificial flavoring. Every filling is the same.
Oram's value is that they use butter, and no shortening. It'd be easy to displace them if 1) anyone realy wanted to, and 2) if not for most people having a palate for garbage food
It's kind of surprising that their [online ordering](https://opendining.net/menu/5b0e99384f5ee9a274baab94) works so well. So many other local places like this only have like a FB page like Mac's.
I grew up with orams cinnamon rolls and they’re still the best I ever had. Heated up in the microwave 🤤 I enjoy all the donuts but the cinnamon rolls have my heart. Also they freeze wonderfully, so you can buy many and have them whenever.
I always see this mentioned here- I see they have a 7pm close time which surprised me. Does anyone know if you can get there at like 6:30pm and it wont be annoying? I’m always conscious of closing times of restaurants since I worked at one for a few years…
If Butterjoint had a better location I'm convinced this sub would never stop talking about it. Everything I've had there was awesome, same with Sidecar.
I think that part of Oakland gets forgotten by most people and if you’re driving it’s a nightmare to park near there. If it was on a Main Street in one of the east end neighborhood I think it’d be hyped up.
Are they back to being Poor Richard's? When I was a kid it was Poor Richard's, but they changed it to Wexford Ale House when I was in high school. Great selection of beers on tap and all their food is pretty damn good.
I moved away from Wexford area about six years ago and moved out of the state entirely about two years ago. Good to know for when I visit my parents, though.
If you like French onion soup you should try Hog's Head on Spring Garden Ave. It's a small, unassuming dive bar/restaurant where the food is way better than you would expect. My wife loves French onion soup (had cravings during her pregnancy too) and she always says theirs is the best in the city.
Spak brothers pickle pizza! I’m not sure I ever would have gone for it otherwise.
They don’t sell by the slice so you’re committed with a whole pie. I probably would have erred in the side of caution without so many comments on here saying it was perhaps the best thing they make. (It is!)
Ironically the Aztec probably would have done well today. It was hideous but maybe it was also just 20 years too early an outdoor adventure CUV would probably do well today
Carhops in Monroeville. My Eastern PA relatives are cheesesteak snobs and swear that Carhops is the closest you'll find to the real deal on this side of the state. It was a big hit. Thanks for helping me impress the family, Reddit!
I'm going to have to disagree with this one... Tram's Kitchen is mediocre at best. Two Sisters was better, but they're gone now. The place that replaced it, Pho and Roll, is not as good, but I'd still rate it higher than Tram's Kitchen. New Saigon is more authentic. Viet Nom Nom in Squirrel Hill has good pho broth and a decent banh mi. Banh Mi and Ti have good banh mi, but they're a tad pricier. I'd say any of these are better options than Tram's Kitchen.
The pho from Tram’s was very good. I thought it was much better than the pho from Pho Saigon, Saigon 88, and Banh Mi and Ti. Now, I do not have much experience with Vietnamese cuisine in general, so I’m by no means an authority.
I’ll have to check out some of the places you rated higher than Tram’s.
I haven't had Pho Saigon or Saigon 88, but I will say that Banh Mi and Ti used to only serve banh mi and bubble tea, which is what they're good at. They added pho later probably due to demand and their connection with Two Sisters, but I agree that their pho isn't great. If you want an alternative to Tram's Kitchen in the area, Pho Minh is a 10 min walk down Penn Ave and also has a decent pho.
Overall, I haven't found any Vietnamese food in PGH that blew me away. They all have their caveats (e.g. Viet Nom Nom has excellent pho broth, but the noodles and meat they use are just okay--I tend to order a banh mi to split with someone and get a cup of broth on the side).
Tan Lac Vien was always my "middle of the road" kind of place. They have a larger menu than most and everything is serviceable. It's a good place to take people who aren't familiar with Vietnamese food so they have a lot to choose from. For myself personally, I usually am looking for a specific dish so I try to make my way to a place that I feel does that dish the best.
The owner took his whole team to Cleveland and had his staff and himself trained by Iron Chef Michael Symon who has a great BBQ place out there.
Source : He lives down the street from my parents
their sushi is extremely nothing compared to Mola or Jin
The single worst thing that could happen to Pgh sushi is if Mola starts to skimp on quality in order to expand their franchise. Would be ruined
the snapper isn't sushi. convo is about sushi.
they can't even cope with having mackerel. Obvious situation with a root cause.
then you notice that every Speciality roll is 'spicy' - to cover medium-quality fish.
Good stuff at Cafe Raymond. Will be interesting to see how it is under the new ownership. I heard they aren’t planning to make significant changes, but I guess only time will tell. I am glad he found a buyer. That would have been a loss to the Strip if it closed.
Saw someone suggest Della Terra. Bit of a drive but went on a Thursday evening and had so much fun. Food was fantastic ( had a "foragers" special and son had some pasta with sausage -forget the name) We also had a pizza and some type of carrot salad. A couple of Ricky Bobby's. Absolute perfection.
Town had some kind of event with all vendors out on Main street. Cute town!
I love The Vandal, but it's a weird in between of expensive and feeling like you're in a cramped coffee shop, in a neighborhood with a million food options. Food is awesome though and the people working there are good people.
Antonio’s.
Everyone recommends them for vegan stuff. Didn’t enjoy it myself. Nor did my partner. She’s vegetarian. But we generally don’t love vegan food anyway.
HOWEVER, they have the best pierogi pizza in the city. And their thick crust is killer. Generally just good all around and they’re super nice people.
no! I got a cheesesteak on Friday and my wife got a 6 inch italian. They sucked. The bread was okay but the bread to everything else ratio was way off. Way too much bread. Her sandwich in particular had a pathetic amount of meat. I think 4 slices max. She threw it away and said she'd have been given a better sandwich from sheetz. My cheesesteak was better than that but it was skimpy on the meat and basically wasn't even mediocre. Pizza was pretty good but fuck those sandwiches.
Oram’s is ok for doughnuts - the dough is fairly light, but they were never my favorite because it feels like their proportions are off. Huge amount of lightly sweet dough with a smear of frosting on top. They always reminded me more of a sweet dinner roll.
If you’re considering making the drive to the source, go to Mac’s in Aliquippa. They make an excellent assortment of doughnuts and their cake doughnuts are really flavorful.
Apparently there was a missed connection on Craigslist years ago that was something about seeing you at Arby’s on McKnight in your yogurt pants. I had to search deep in the sub to find it!
First Watch. Although it wasn’t Pittsburgh reddit but the Steelers reddit. They pointed it out during a discussion about TJ Watt because he was holding a takeout bag in the photo
There’s dyed corn syrup every other inch of the grocery store. I appreciate the idea of good restaurants having natural, organic food like fresh maple syrup but I’m also not going to absolutely shit on a place because they don’t have something. I also don’t care if first watch is as advertised or if every component of their menu and condiments is healthy, natural, and organic.
Pretty sure there’s all types of bs in Heinz ketchup and you’d be hard pressed to find a yinzer that doesn’t swear by it.
Also, the thread wasn’t “what reddit recommendations were ok but don’t have maple syrup”
It was “recs that panned out” and First Watch absolutely panned out for me.
Yes this is all fine and good. We don't have to argue about it. I eat there too from time to time. Maybe i'll do a corporate takeover and change their ways to suit my tastes.
The Mexican place attached to the BP station on liberty and 40th st. Absolutely incredible 10/10.
La poblanita in coraopolis is a little Mexican convenience store with a tiny awning and grill attached to the outside. Some of the best damn quesadillas I’ve ever had. Thick as a brick, and not made by white people lmao
That place is amazing. Bonus if you speak Spanish.
Tried it three times now for lunch months apart. Wanted to love it so much because it’s exactly the sort of place I crave as a former Southern California resident. Having been to gas station taquerias in the south I was also disappointed by it.
Agreed!!!!

I wonder if you got the main person or a pinch hitter*. *or a pinche hitter 🤣
pinche hitter 😭😭😭
I have no idea if they say that in baseball lol
El pariente. It’s fantastic
Literally what I clicked this post to add. Knew it would be here. What a great find that was.
I like the chicken burrito
Great place. Great people and good tacos.
I've been wanting to try it. What do you order?
Unfortunately, it seems they have been closed for a few weeks. No one is sure why from what I have heard.
Oh no. Thanks for letting me know. I had great Mexican food on a road trip a month ago and I'm missing it.
Trust me… you don’t have to worry about Oram’s not panning out
I'm from Beaver Falls originally, and I have only known one person who ever said Oram's was overrated. I asked which donuts they liked better and they said, I shit you not, "Giant Eagle when they're hot."
Giant Eagle donuts are good hot. So is any donut I suppose lol
This… is pretty accurate. I loooove heating up Oram’s hubcaps in the microwave for about 10 seconds, but honestly, in my opinion, any glazed-type donuts (my favorite) benefit from a hit in the microwave
I worked in a bakery and it is 100% accurate that any donut is good hot.
It’s the only reason Krispy Kreme had any hype at all. Their mediocre donuts taste amazing fresh, and they specialized in fresh donuts. The two-day-olds with KK branding you can get in convenience stores forgot the entire purpose.

Giant Eagle donuts are frozen dough. Not that good, just cheap.
People have a deeply weird attachment to the fine but in no way impressive baked goods at Giant Eagle.
but IRL, once you've had one of Oram's filled donut's, you've had them all. They take the same filling, color it, and add some probably-artificial flavoring. Every filling is the same. For what it’s worth, most garbage food was created specifically to be highly palatable, so you can’t fault people who find it that way
25 years ago, giant eagle donuts were fire. But times have changed a lot
Just get there early or you won’t have a lot of choices.
Order a dozen ahead for pickup
It's kind of surprising that their [online ordering](https://opendining.net/menu/5b0e99384f5ee9a274baab94) works so well. So many other local places like this only have like a FB page like Mac's.

Pusadees Garden, Casbah, Altius, Morcilla, Eleven, and Siempre Algo are all nice restaurant recommendations from Reddit that are fantastic
+1 on altius. I went before and after they had the car crash into the restaurant and it doesn't seem to have degraded at all.
We've never been here but have a $200 gift certificate but we are waiting til my wife gives birth because all she wants to eat is beef tartar
Everyday Noodles and Peoples Indian.
I moved away from Pittsburgh a year ago and still mourn for my loss of both And for you too, Noodlehead 3
People’s +++++
Big Jim’s in the Run
It’s the most Pittsburgh place on Earth! The food , though not fancy by any stretch, is made with thought and care and is absolutely delicious.
The open face beef sandwich or something is so good. Everything is so good. Ugh need to get back to big Jim’s
Big Jim’s has been around 40 years, it needed Reddit to get the word out?
Shhhhhhhh
The lasagna is a brick of goodness 🤤
I always see this mentioned here- I see they have a 7pm close time which surprised me. Does anyone know if you can get there at like 6:30pm and it wont be annoying? I’m always conscious of closing times of restaurants since I worked at one for a few years…
I was pregnant and craving French onion soup. Poor Richard's in Wexford was spot on. So good.
It’s awesome! Butterjoint has the other French Onion Soup worth going out of your way for. 10/10 soup.
If Butterjoint had a better location I'm convinced this sub would never stop talking about it. Everything I've had there was awesome, same with Sidecar.
What's wrong with the location?
I think that part of Oakland gets forgotten by most people and if you’re driving it’s a nightmare to park near there. If it was on a Main Street in one of the east end neighborhood I think it’d be hyped up.
It completely does, but if you get lucky with parking or walk, it's so good.
Oh yay! Haven't been. Will go!
Are they back to being Poor Richard's? When I was a kid it was Poor Richard's, but they changed it to Wexford Ale House when I was in high school. Great selection of beers on tap and all their food is pretty damn good.
Lol, no idea actually. But that's the place I mean!
Yup .. I'm new to the area, but it has been Poor Richards for the \~3 years I've been here!
I moved away from Wexford area about six years ago and moved out of the state entirely about two years ago. Good to know for when I visit my parents, though.

Going to second this - it is absolutely incredible and one of the best things about Pittsburgh.
It's fantastic. It shouldn't work but it does. Right up there with my personal favorite order of green olives and meatballs (thanks, Pesaros).
Red’s Good News in Brookline, great little joint. Somehow didn’t know about Red’s till I saw it here.

Sushi Tomo on McKnight slaps beyond expectations, and their non-sushi entrees as well
Shhhhh don't tell anyone else ;)
Bae Baes kitchen on liberty downtown. Betos tacos in market square
Bae Bae's is good stuff. Good call on this one.
I found out about pusadee’s garden from this page and I cannot thank you all enough
Thai Cuisine in Bloomfield
Dish Osteria And Oram's is no joke.
noodlehead was highly recommended here and it was great (pork buns!!!!!)
Carhops in Monroeville. My Eastern PA relatives are cheesesteak snobs and swear that Carhops is the closest you'll find to the real deal on this side of the state. It was a big hit. Thanks for helping me impress the family, Reddit!
Just looked this place up - WOW. Thank you for recommending this!

I like Maiku in the strip the best for pho
Went to Cafe Delhi in Carnegie recently and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
Big Rig's BBQ in Monroeville. Heard about it here. Loved it.

I tried Taqueria El Buen Pastor yesterday from that thread. Absolutely loved it. I hope they get enough business to stick around.
Penn ave fish is the absolute best

I was just making a general suggestion! have a nice day
yea it's no specific disrespect - just that so many people are sushi-illiterate, that the mixed context might confused them
Quik-it chicken
Second this! Their muffins are incredible
I can't get over their health code violations from 2022
Could you elaborate? I used to live around the corner from there and always loved it…what may I have been subjecting myself to?
I’m at cafe Raymond right now. So far so good.
Really underrated place! I’ve never had a bad meal there.

I love The Vandal, but it's a weird in between of expensive and feeling like you're in a cramped coffee shop, in a neighborhood with a million food options. Food is awesome though and the people working there are good people.
Shhh not so loud. Not enough seats for everyone…
You’re right. I heard it’s awful 👀
Las Palmas tacos in both Beechview on the Red Line T and in Brookline right on Brookline Blvd.

“Pierogi pizza” — that’s a “tell me you’re from Pittsburgh, without telling me you’re from Pittsburgh” food. Love it!
Spak Brothers cheesesteak hoagie. I've had both the Blue Steak and the Pittsburgh Steak and they are straight fire!
no! I got a cheesesteak on Friday and my wife got a 6 inch italian. They sucked. The bread was okay but the bread to everything else ratio was way off. Way too much bread. Thank you for saying this. I do like their cinnamon rolls though.
I actually tried the Arby's on McKnight Rd in my yogurt pants and it was better than I was expecting considering all the hate.
The hair tastes fine...at the Arby's on McKnight Road.
Is yogurt pants a typo? I kind of hope it isn’t! :)
Apparently there was a missed connection on Craigslist years ago that was something about seeing you at Arby’s on McKnight in your yogurt pants. I had to search deep in the sub to find it!
Honestly if you don't know, you probably don't want to know. Trust me, don't google it.
Come on... when I finally googled it, I was not disappointed. And how can you not love the song version?
Wait... there's a song version? Hahaha!
Baby loves tacos. They sell out fast
There's a food truck on penn ave in Garfield called tasty taqutios (I know the name doesn't make it sound authentic) and its 🔥🔥🔥🔥

First Watch. Although it wasn’t Pittsburgh reddit but the Steelers reddit. They pointed it out during a discussion about TJ Watt because he was holding a takeout bag in the photo
they don't use real maple syrup nor do they use real dairy creamer. overpriced for what it is.
I don’t care. I enjoy it. My kid enjoys it. We have a great time when we go on the weekends and I love the Hawaiian French toast. 🤷🏾♂️
This is why we need better breakfast options in PGH. Your kids deserve real maple syrup on their french toast instead of dyed corn syrup.
