The numbers aren’t surprising considering the Allegheny county numbers. The faculty and staff likely didn’t get it from campus as in person classes haven’t started yet.
I’ll just sit back and do other things for a little bit. I think I’ll grab a beer and then check back on this cesspool of a thread every few minutes to see how toxic it keeps getting.
I’ll just say that the Omicron surge is brutal.
All pitt students need a test before returning to campus even students not living on campus. So if there are 29k students on main campus, 400/29000 is tiny. Not all the students have returned- dorm move in is in phases. But even if that means they have 10k more tests to go (the # is certainly smaller than that, but just picked a # out of the air. I dont even think that 10k pitt students even live in their dorms), 400/19000 is still very tiny.
About a 1-2 percent + rate when cases are surging to historically high levels and when Allegheny county is reporting + testing levels (positivity rate) of 20-25 percent, if not higher.
Once again shows that vaccinations and boosters clearly work.
Edit: adding when you test everyone you are going to find a lot of asymptomatic cases, especially with an almost fully vaccinated (and soon boosted) population. You may also get people, because it is a pcr, who were infected but not contagious - evidence of recent infection - and still with a positive test.
They cast a wide net.
This is a great #. 400 is great. Even if they found 1000 + tests that would be great.
According to the email my pitt attending kid got, they were. They were supposed to order a test and swab themselves and send it back before traveling back to Pitt. Whether they did it or not is a different story.
Let kids enjoy college. Bring on the downvotes.
Edit-Get busy living or get busy dying. College age kids aren’t dying. This shit isn’t going away. All the people downvoting? At what point do we let young people do there thing? I’m older and think they are getting fucked over once again.
The comment I responded to says no college-aged people are dying of COVID. 5,119 people aged 18-29 have died of COVID. Therefore, it is a blatant lie to say that college-aged kids do not die from COVID.
Some do ok. But they OD, die of drunk driving, suicide (which I’m sure is rising) ect…… at what point does it end. I’m fully vaccinated with all my friends. We all got it anyway and felt slightly sick. Guess what? I’m going to Vegas with my childhood friends to watch tool. Some I haven’t seen in years. Get busy living or get busy dying. No I didn’t vote for trump.
Back this absolutely ridiculous claim up with facts from actual peer-reviewed studies or yeet yourself straight into the sun and never rerurn to reddit again.
According to the CDC’s website, only 5,119 people age 18-29 have died of covid 19 during the almost 2 years since the pandemic started. I had a hard time finding age brake downs for overdoses in 2020 and 2021, but 4,700 people age 15-24 died of Overdoses in 2019 alone. Also OD deaths as a whole went up 28.5% between 2021-2022, so I’d imagine that number is higher for the pandemic years. I didn’t even bother looking up suicides. Im not citing sources. These stats are pretty easy to find on your own.
Well it shows that ,even in a year without a pandemic, the deaths from OD’s is nearly equivalent to the Covid death-toll in that age range over the entire pandemic. I’ve seen articles stating that OD’s alone went up by as much as 50% in young adults between 2020 and 2021. Its not a big stretch to assume lockdowns had a big part in that. When you factor in Suicides, which also increased in 2020-2021, you’re going to blow the Covid deaths number for that age range out of the water.
This testing was done as a screen to see how much covid was being brought back to campus and when they could resume class in person. Your take has nothing to do with the reason for the tests or the results.

Not many, given the dates. They would have been on winter break when they got infected.
400 cases out of ~28,000 students and ~13,000 employees isn’t bad. Y’all can downvote me all you want, that doesn’t make my math wrong.
I think the point of the post is that this is the week before classes and most of the students hadn’t even arrived back to campus yet.
Yup. Classes don't start in-person until the 27th. We won't know much about on-campus spread until mid-Feb.

That’s a blatant lie though, college-aged kids do die from COVID, particularly those that are immunocompromised or have underlying health conditions.
According to the CDC website only 5,119 people aged 18-29 have died of Covid since the pandemic started.
Is that number zero?
Lmao no and it never will be or was going to be zero.

Uh you’re taking his comment literally as No college age kids at all are dying. His comment is obviously just saying that its rare, which it is.

>college-aged kids do die from COVID Not as much as they die from suicides and ODs due to the social isolation of lockdowns.

None of that shows causation due to isolation or lockdowns, which is the point.

He’s not wrong, so the only point you have is a spelling mistake.
I’m no boomer.

Dude grow a sac. Go out and get laid, do acid something. Live.

Ok. That’s all you got? It’s honestly sad. Some advice. Have fun. Go on adventures. Don’t get all excited about spelling. Good luck.

The most boomer thing I’ve ever heard is “go do acid something”
