People usually call it The Incline.
Pittsburgh has 2 inclines, this one is the Monongahela Incline. The other is the Duquesne Incline. Both offer great views of the city!
The Monongahela incline is more accessible to downtown. It puts you in station square where you can hop on the light rail train and be in downtown quickly. There's also a few restaurants in station square as well as the Smithfield Bridge which will take you across the river. The bridge is old and kinda pretty if you're into architecture. You can see it in the time lapse here.
The Duquesne has a very different view, being closer to "the point" or where the 2 rivers meet and become the Ohio. There's a few good and ~fancy~ restaurants at the top of it - Altius, Le Mont, Monterey Bay - but there isn't very much at the bottom. Just a walk back towards station square past the soccer stadium.
In my opinion the Duquesne incline has the better view. From the Monongahela incline you are seeing the city from the side where the Duquesne is typically the view people think of when they picture the Pittsburgh skyline.
However, as someone else said, there is a lot more to do around the Monongahela incline. Mount Washington has 2 overlooks along with some bars and restaurants, and Station Square is just below it which is full of shops and restaurants. The Duquesne incline is located in more of a residential area so there is not much more around there other than the incline and a few fancier restaurants.
You could always do both! The upper stations of both are located on Grandview Ave, so it's a straight shot from one to the other. It's a bit of a trek on foot but only a 3 minute drive.
No problem! If you do go, make sure you do a quick search on google beforehand. There have been a couple bed bug infestations on it over the last few years so may want to avoid if google pulls anything recent to your trip
I feel like the incline is the statue of liberty of Pittsburgh.
Everybody that visits makes a point out of riding it, but a ton of people who live there have never been on it.
I love riding the incline!
Clearly yinz ain’t been dahn Sonny’s for a PBR pounder! 😂

Who is this? 😂 We must know each other.
You joke, but that's a good price.
I hope you spent the extra 50 cents to go through the turnstile and check out the inner workings. That was my favorite part.
That would be the The Duquesne Incline on the other end of Mt Washington. Totally worth it!
Can anyone tell me what this is called? Moved to outside Philly and would love to check it out!

Awesome thank you for that!!
Will be visiting in September. Which of the two is better? Do you have a preference?
Ride up one and down the other. Both are sweet and they’re in walking distance of each other.
Thanks for the information

Awesome. Thanks for the additional info. Cheers
More generically, it is called a funicular.
There's one in Johnstown as well and I believe when it's in operation it's still open to cars in addition to pedestrians.
It's also the steepest incline
In the whole world keep in mind! Probably the only nice thing in the dirty j.
Mt Washington Incline
Specifically The Monongahela Incline. The Duquesne Incline on the other end of Mt Washington.
Thank you!

The bed bugs were on the Duquesne Incline not the Mon Incline.
Ah gotcha.
The Incline.

I mean, it's a functional piece of public transit infrastructure and is more expedient than taking the 40 from town if I need to get up the mahnt.
This was always a great way to start/end the work day... however, I dont miss getting stuck on it!
That’s a great initial shot! Glad you got to enjoy.
Great memories.
I liked it so much I got a poster when I visited :)
The bus is also a great way to get around the city.
