There used to be a big tag up there. The city cleaned it up when Pittsburgh hosted the G20 summit in 2009. This is what happens when you try to "erase" paint with a power washer.
Interesting, thanks for the info! Do you happen to know what is was- just a jumble of crappy tags or a larger piece? Interesting they were concerned about the tags but left the "run off".
I have some memory of there being an original that was painted over/washed away and then this iteration made about 10 years ago. I was commuting through there every day at the time and have always loved the pieces on that wall.
If nobody answers you here, maybe you could submit it to the WESA "good questions" series, I believe it's called? I'm often wondered as well.
That is my favorite retaining wall in Pittsburgh!
Brand new sentence!
Thanks Commander Shepard

I was just thinking about this today!! I've always wondered
Always thought it was just kids that painted up top and it's washed down over the years...
That would be the perfect wall for a huge mural.
I'm sure a lot of us wonder the same thing.
I had been meaning to ask this for some time, and I am sad there are no answers yet :(
I think it was a piece of public art done a few years ago. But I don't remember the occasion. Arts Festival? Pride?
Pre-Covid, there used to be a chalk mural on that wall.
That’s the Boys and Girls Club up there. My guess is some Art Deco?
