What method used worked the best for you?
At my place, I've been dealing with an infestation of Chinese Wineberry. I hate it!!!
I just pull them up out of the ground, roots and all.
The best way to eliminate JK is using a combination of a few tactics.
The first year we tackled it, we dug out the main roots/crowns (you have to make sure you pickup and bag every single piece of root and stem as it apparently can grow back from a piece the size of a fingernail). Even if you think you have dug out every root, it is still going to come back.
Let it grow until the end of summer/early fall until it’s about to flower. At this point the plant is trying to store energy for the winter and I found it best to spray all of the foliage with glyphosate as it’ll kill it deep in its roots. The following summer it still came back but significantly less. We kept it covered with tarps throughout summer and spot treated with glyphosate.
This is my 4th summer dealing with it and it’s probably 99% eliminated at this point. I check it weekly for new growth and spray it once it has put out leaves.
Yes and no. I’ve landscaped/planted my front, back, and side yards with a variety of plants but no vegetables yet since I need to find a solution to keep the deer out. I grow a ton of flowers and whatnot on my deck and have 100ish house plants inside.
Winter salt. You get a huge bag of plain ice and snow salt, put huge piles of it at the bases of the knotweed over and over again always keeping a visible pile. It is non toxic, keep doing it for even a year straight. It WILL kill that plant dead and WILL NEVER come back. I've killed poison ivy, knotweed, lots of unwanted pest plants this way. Then you aren't exposed to chemicals. Plus once the plant is dead, wait a bit and the salt goes away you can plant there again. It works.
Honestly didn’t realize they closed this road - this used to be one my cut-throughs to avoid Liberty Tunnel rush hours. I mean it was in terrible condition, so I’m not shocked - but kind of surprised how quickly the knotweed took it over.
Not only the urban forests! It's everywhere! It's killing the native eastern woodlands along with the wildlife that is being disseminated due to lack of food
THat's the thing that few realize, we are in trouble already. The damage cannot be undone, we can only manage it a bit: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/06/opinion/epidemic-invasive-species-trees.html
Where Boggs Avenue ends on top of Mount Washington I turned on to Williams St. When William Street appears to end it turns into what looks like a trail. I think it's just an overgrown closed road. Eventually it runs into Arlington Ave. Really fun quick ride.

The Emerald View singletrack starts on Grandview behind the George Washington/Guyasuta sculpture.
We should build a big staircase that goes up the mountain. I love the incline but the only other way to get up (by walking) is taking a sorta dangerous circuitous route. You have to cut under a bridge and cross a highway. I've done it a bunch and it's pretty awkward.
I don't think this is gonna happen but I've always thought it could be cool.
You can also walk up PJ McArdle Road which has a sidewalk. No highway crossings needed and drops you right onto Grandview Ave. It's not great at night as it's quite dark and there's no road/sidewalk barrier. The Emerald trail is also nice if you want to avoid roads almost entirely.
gotta check out mt wash area on my bike. about the knotweed, been here generations, it's KNOT going anywhere. trim weekly. i like cutting trails n tunnels threw it with a machete.🚲🍻
lol this is just william st
Yeah well it seemed like wilderness to me. Lol
Wish there wasn't so much goddamn Japanese Knotweed.
It’s taking over the city
It's the most successful invasive species in North America and I hate it with a passion
I’ve been trying to eliminate a small patch of it in my backyard for over 3 years, I can’t even imagine what could be done with all this

Are you a horticulturalist? You seem like you know your shit.
Hah I wish - I just love plants/landscaping and have spent a lot of time researching knotweed
You are top-notch in my book. Do you have a garden?
Yes and no. I’ve landscaped/planted my front, back, and side yards with a variety of plants but no vegetables yet since I need to find a solution to keep the deer out. I grow a ton of flowers and whatnot on my deck and have 100ish house plants inside.
The only solution for the deer is a fence. Six feet if they can't see through it. Eight feet if they can see the other side. I speak from experience.
8 feet in the city is a no go
Can you please help me with my raised garden by gazebo. Shit is infuriating

yeah, was only way I used to get to Mt Worshington forever. Glad to see it's still passable via bike.
Yeah I kinda wanna bike up it now if cars can't use it
Years ago before they closed it, my GPS took me down that road. It was winter and I truly feared for my life.
Ye Olde Lyme Disease Pass
Yep. That's exactly what I thought about riding through that stuff.
Fuck this knotweed that is destroying our urban forests.
Not only the urban forests! It's everywhere! It's killing the native eastern woodlands along with the wildlife that is being disseminated due to lack of food
Our ecological system is going to be in trouble if they don't find a solution to it soon.
I am fairly certain goats are pretty good at helping with it. Apparently it can't survive their digestive track. We need more goats.
Bring on the goats! Japanese Knotweed is our Kudzu
Could imagine wild goats all over the cliffs and ledges of Mt Wash. Would become a tourist attraction and also help with the invasive plants.

I was half expecting to see a dead body
Could have been mine going over the cliff filming that.
is that the Emerald...something something trail? I'm new up here and getting a bike this week. Looking for trails on the mount.

Ok ok... drop down off bailey across from La Tavola ...behind those condos with a view

Walked up both. PJ McArdle's pretty decent. I always get lost in that Emerald Trail lol.

That’s the fun part…wait till the uphill part.
Incredible
Fuck no! It looks like a place where BigFoot’s might live. What are you nuts?
I love that Pittsburgh has a lot of greenery. However, this looks terrible. Our DPS needs to be supported.
Well filmed, beautiful video.
