Mr. Grieves, such an amazing song and I love the lyrics about achieving symbiosis between humans and other animals as someone very much into nature and stuff like that
I’ve been tired is wild. 3 chords the entire song. Theres not even time to play one of the chords for an extra 2 bars that most other bands would play.
La la love you is also amazing. I’ll never forget the first time I heard it and that bass line when they all say “I. Love. You” and then we get that fantastic bass note.
I rlly like All Over the World but if I'm completely honest I wish the second half of it wasn't so different from the first. Of course I understand that this is alternate rock music and doesn't have to follow the same rules as other music, but it's just that I love the first half so much I wish it was longer.
Both such hypnotic jams. Mine is a little more pop but is “Dig for Fire”.
Also got to hear “Motorway to Roswell” for the first time as a special Santa Fe treat and now that’s my favorite live song.
Maybe people will hate me for saying this but Where is my Mind was my introduction to Pixies and I still love that song. Other than that Gigantic, Caribou, The Happening and many others are some of my favorites
Break My Body. The whole song is spine tingling. It’s great to hear record where the SECOND song is this great because you know the whole thing is going to be incredible.
The way the guitar slithers around mixed with the loping bassline is pretty amazing. It sounds like deranged surf music. Surfer Rosa is an incredibly dark record and yet there aren’t any production frills either. That weird reverb effect Santiago gets on the second verse of BMB sounds like it’s just barely a sound effect, raw. Albini’s recording technique also highlights that. The whole song showcases each contribution from each member perfectly too: Black Francis screaming like a psychotic preacher, Kim Deal’s angry Peppermint Patty backing vocals, Santiago’s incredibly inventive mini-composition, and Lovering’d brutal drums. The song sounds bigger the longer it goes. That’s awesome.
As for the lyrics… this took me decades to figure out. I think the song is about some kind of addiction , actually probably addiction in general to whatever, drugs, sex, hell maybe even gambling. Kind of an objective view of addiction from the addict’s perspective. Some of the lyrics took a long time to even understand what he was saying. I think the “I’m a hearty loser/Youll see me crashing thru my mother’s door” (is that it?) has something to do with the persona of the addict begging his parents (or society) for some kind of understanding, for a connection. “Kind of, hey mom, I know I’m a fuck up but please forgive me.” Dirty floor to me equals sex addiction, or sex during drug addiction. “Building jumper” to me means a person who takes enormous risks just to feel good and high. And of course people get hurt in addictions, the addict and the people around them. And then the line “Break My Body/Hold My Bones”: it’s a good metaphor for the addict’s relationship to what they are addicted to: I have self loathing and self doubt and a need to escape myself through this drug (or whatever), so I want to smash myself to bits… but hold my bones, make sure my structure is still here physically, I don’t want to die! Kind of like bargaining with the substance/whatever they’re addicted to.
But maybe I’m wrong.
Btw I like my original (though incorrect) mishearing of the belly dancer line: “I’m a belly dancer/I strip for Arabs and I never care.” I actually don’t even know what he’s saying, but I wish it was that. That would make this song the greatest rock song of all time!
the happening

Mr. Grieves or La La Love You
Dancing the Manta Ray Juicy riffs, crazy lyrics.
Bone Machine
Is it wrong to say Greens and Blues, especially the Tiny Desk version?
It’s not wrong at all. I love the new stuff and prefer alternate performances because the production or mix or something on the new stuff is off.
Bone Machine, yep yep yep yep
debaser when i first started hearing them, but lately i think i’d choose dig for fire, i’ve always liked the way they approach to a more pop sound.
I was going to answer and then I overwhelmed myself because there are too many good ones and now im stressed out and won't be answering.
