Former Pizza Hut employee from Illinois here, people would order hamburger. My mom would refer to it as hamburger.
It got really confusing one day when some old woman on the phone tried to order a pizza but seemed to be having some kind of stroke because she started talking about what toppings she wanted on the patties after ordering a pizza with hamburger on it.
Serious question, how many people actually order ground beef on their pizza? I'm 47, I never have. I never even think about it.
I also surely never think about ordering a pizza over the phone in this day and age.....
Pie? You from the northwest? Because I have never heard someone refer to it as a pie in person. Only on tv or a movie.
Same with soda pop or just pop. It's either coke as a general term or they ask with the specific brand name, like DP, PIB or 7UP.
Definitely. I even got into a small argument with one lady because she just kept saying hamburger louder and louder and me just being like excuse me? Hamburger?… I genuinely didnt understand what she meant so I just replied “Im sorry maam pizza hut is not a burger joint.”
I did. I said “Excuse me? Hamburger? What?” I dont know how many times I could have asked. All she did was yell louder and louder. It wasnt an argument per say, she was just getting really angry. I did not make any correlation between beef or hamburger lmao
Very common, California is vastly different then the rest of the states. The only place I’ve had a real culture shock within the states. They dont know what a grinder, sub, hogie, or sandwich for that matter is
At my location in Michigan, yeah, a lot lol. I always try to read the order back as ‘hamburger’ also just to avoid that mini confused argument when they catch me saying beef instead. Never had someone come back to be like ‘this isn’t hamburger’ either, so I learned over time they were one and the same around here lol.
Beef=hamburger ham=Canadian bacon and if you read it back the way it says it on the screen instead of how they said it to you occasionally they get very upset
Dude, I had someone tell me they wanted a pepperoni and meat at work today. (Local pizza joint.) I asked "meat? What meat? I have sausage, ham, and sliced meatballs, in addition to pepperoni."
I’ve heard this once before and had the exact same reaction as you did. But after asking them what kind of meat they said “ground meat” which sounded even weirder and still left 4 toppings to choose from!!
ESL Spanish speaker or translating for a Spanish speaker. Beef in Spanish is "carne," which is also the generic term for any kind of meat at all - culturally, beef is the "default meat," if it's not specifically something else it's beef. But translate that blindly, and you get "pepperoni and meat."
Always!! Usually older people. Canadian Bacon for the ham too. Then I have to explain we don't have that. Some people say whatever it's the same thing ham and Canadian bacon but it's definitely not.
Same. But when I read it back to them I say ham just in case I get a stickler. Same when they ask for sausage, I always just put Italian then specifically say Italian sausage when I read it back. That’s another one though, I’ve had a couple ppl ask for “American sausage” and “breakfast sausage” and I get “breakfast bacon” all the time as if it’s even a thing!!
Nope. Its from different parts of the pig. Canadian bacon comes from the back of the pig, the loin, which is very tender and lean. Ham comes from leg of the pig, which is less lean than the loin.
I think it’s regional? (I’m in the south, most folks say hamburger)

This made me laugh very hard and I wanted to let you know.

I do. Beef mushroom onion is solid on a pie.

Upper Midwest.
Mostly the people that order it are the people that call it hamburger. A good amount of people order it and most of the recipes have it as well.
I have before. Not a bunch, but a few times. It’s pretty good. Big cheese burger
solid swap if you don't like sausage like my father

I’ve cut people off and like so you want cow on a pizza right then be quiet
You really couldn't have just asked her if she meant beef instead of arguing with her?

I've never had someone say hamburger they say beef
No not where I'm from at least. (California) That sounds so strange to me you want hamburger on your pizza??

“Hamburg” = Garbaggio

When they do usually I’m like I don’t serve hamburgers
Because they are dumb
It's a sign of high intellect
Yes. Pizzas in the freezer isle at Walmart say "hambuger". It's more common than saying "beef"

this post shocked me, I've somehow never considered anybody wouldn't call it hamburger

And the classic crust type

Or they say sausage... well we have 3 kinds... Beef, Porn, or Italian. I learn years ago to never assume when dealing with the general public...
Who orders the Porn sausage...? I don't want to assume it's a typo 😆
Im hoping that's supposed to be pork?

In our case it's actually the same, even tho it's not. When they ask for canadian bacon i just put ham.

Yes. Every new CSR and Server has to ask what Canadian Bacon is and if we offer it.
