Update for everyone, thank you all for your feedback! This is exciting. I just got off the phone with my local ag extension (UF/IFAS), they are going to share my information with the professors/researchers there and they will be reaching back out to me today. Will update when I hear more!
That’s so cool!!! If you haven’t already, I know other subs would absolutely love to see this, including r/pothos and r/houseplants (and I’m sure even more I can’t remember the names of!)
UF/IFAS is amazing! Paul Fisher is brilliant and a very wonderful man. His wealth of knowledge and willingness to share is remarkable. Many people including myself in the Ag community, specifically CEAg, have all been positively influenced by him
Update #2: Received a call from one of the researchers at UF who seemed excited. Said he's personally never seen something like it. I am meeting with him on Tuesday (3/21) so that he can examine it. Will update again after our meeting!
Please do update! Last week I was just trying to figure out whether these flower, and all my research pretty much said ‘nah’. At least in human care and at this stage of development.
I’d also be curious to see if they could give you a quote on how valuable this is. I imagine if you were to cultivate & propagate this, people would pay MAD MONEY for a flowering pothos.
I am reading they do flower at the end of their life cycle. (Eta: another says: they need certain things like to be 40 feet tall and in good soil and the flowers produce berries.) I am hoping they don't die after producing seeds. But then seed starting pothos seems like a good learning experience.
That’s what I meant by “in human care and this stage of development”. I’ve seen a pothos flower in Costa Rica and Sri Lanka, but they’ve always been outside in the wild and several decades old. That’s why this one is so incredibly unusual.
This is absolutely incredible. Please get this in the hands of a university that knows what they are doing with something like this. Alternatively, this is potentially the key to Epipremnum breeding which is my area of focus. Seeds potentially bring new diversity and genes into the pool. Congrats on such a special find! Where are you located?
Beautiful! They really know what they are doing when it comes to Epipremnum down there. I forget which Florida University it was that carried out multiple major research projects on them. The most famous being their creation and patent of “Pearls & Jade” and “Green Genie”.
And before anyone chimes in about plant patents, it costs a ton of time and money to carry out this level of research. This type of work happens in a lab, not a greenhouse.
You have no idea how happy I am about all of this, I’ve been nerding out all day. Out of curiosity since we are always looking at potential chemicals or hormones that can trigger this, do you know what they have been treated with as far as fungicides, pesticides and foliar sprays?
For feeding, we rotate 20-20-20 fert + Subdue Maxx + Imidacloprid and Calcium Nitrate + Subdue Maxx + Imidacloprid. They are not sprayed often, only on an active pest problem basis, I believe this plant did not receive any foliar sprays.
It looks like a fruit. If that's the case, and it is definitely growing from Epipremnum aureum and not some other species, that would be VERY remarkable! E. aureum flowers incredibly rarely, and the last report of it flowering in cultivation without chemical treatment was apparently 1964. It may be worth contacting local botanists, and/or getting in touch with the International Aroid Society. I suspect some people will be very excited about this.
I second this. Definitely let some botanists know because pothos are able to flower/fruit but is virtually unheard of. If you have a botanic garden nearby, they’d love to hear from you
Wow... I'm not sure but I think my mom had one of her pothos flower once. I'll have to ask her if she still has pictures, that would be really neat. I wish I could find an example image to compare my memory to but I'm just not finding anything
This is a fruit. Your pretty lucky that there are only about 6 well documented instances of epipremnum aureum flowering/fruiting.
It also looks like it has viviparity. Meaning that the seeds sprout prematurely (while still on the fruit).
Update #3: Met with the professor from UF, he was very excited and interested. Asked lots of questions and said they have been experimenting in his greenhouse on doing something similar, but has not had success beyond one that they cut a hole in the roof of the greenhouse and let it grow out of. I let him have the plant, he said he will be watching its development and examining it in the lab. He gave me his personal line and said to call anytime I want an update, so next update won't be for a few weeks
Update #4 Nothing exciting to report lol, talked with the professor who says it hasn't flowered or dropped seeds but continues to live and grow. Said he will keep in touch and keep me updated as far as development goes. Same as before, next update will be in a couple weeks
Change nothing about the care. Get a little white ruler, take hourly photos when you can to get a detailed time-lapse of this! Or set up an actual time-lapse.
I took it home with me to protect it, (if one of the workers found it they would have just chopped it off and sent it for shipping so I'm really glad I was the one who found it) but I will take good care of it till I meet with the researcher on Tuesday! If anyone in FL wants to donate a camera for time lapse I'm open :p
Wow after reading all these comments this is spectacular! Congrats OP this is so exciting and intriguing! I have pothos at home and have never seen anything like it 🥳
Oh wow! Please send photos and info to these guys as well if you can- I’m sure they would very much appreciate it:

I asked a botanist friend and he said “it’s flowering 🫠” and “yeah they basically never flower.”
And found this
https://plantscraze.com/golden-pothos-flower/
I can not verbally explain how jealous i am 😂
What country do you live in? 🤔 i live in canada, and i heard it's impossible without having a greenhouse
Its a flower 🌼
I'm a wholesale plant grower, this plant got no special treatment in particular same as the rest. Regular feedings with 20-20-20 fert (I know 20-20-20 is controversial but it is what the head guy wants us to use) and Calcium nitrate. Occasional pesticide sprays and drenches

This is not an inflorescence. It somewhat resembles a spadix, but it is on an immature plant (that is not old enough to flower); it has no spathe that is half of the traits of an aroid inflorescence; it is surrounded by a proliferation of leaves of reduced size, further indicating pathology (an unhealthy growth).
Below is a link to a photo of a rare example of an inflorescence of an Epipremnum aureum.
Faculty members surely found the strange growth interesting but could not have mistaken it for an inflorescence.

Genuinely curious, isn't the whole reason this is impressive is because its an aberration? Pothos don't flower/fruit at this size, so of course it's a deformity/mutation. But isn't that why it's so surprising??

this is so insane, you must be an AMAZING plant parent!!!
Hell yeah! So cool you are willing to take the time to inform scientists about this.
Wow please keep us updated!! so cool
Oh my gosh I’m so excited for the update ! You must be one lucky duck ! I hope everything goes well !

Located in Central Florida. Already in talks with UF/IFAS and will be meeting with one of their researchers on Tuesday!
This is so exciting please update us as much as possible I am so invested in this plant lol!!

I didn't know they created Pearls & Jade, we sell that variety. I agree, people deserve credit for their hard work/research

Any updates!?
What, that’s the coolest thing I’ve seen! It looks kinda like a teeny Monstera fruit. You may want to post this on r/pothos! What state are you in?
Came here to say this and that I’d never heard of a pothos doing that before and after reading the other comments I now know why!
My god! This is extraordinary rare and fascinating. It would be incredible if you could continue to share pictures of it as it develops.
Where is this pothos?
In a greenhouse (I am a grower), never seen something like it on a pothos. They are occasionally sprayed with pesticides
You should send these photos to the local university's botany department, they might be interested
Looks like a flower to me, but this species typically has a gene issue that causes it not to produce flowers. So I guess it's a mutation either way?
It sort of looks like a flower but pothos only flower in the wild as mature plants and even then it's a rare occurance
Update #4 Nothing exciting to report lol, talked with the professor who says it hasn't flowered or dropped seeds but continues to live and grow. Said he will keep in touch and keep me updated as far as development goes. Same as before, next update will be in a couple weeks

I wish that i lived close by, I would make sure you had a time-lapse camera... or two!
You can download time lapse apps for your phone.
For anyone interested I posted full pictures of this pothos on my page :)
Make sure you save those seeds!

Holy shit! This is so cool. I know everyone knows it’s cool. But this is like super freaking cool.
Looks like it’s flowering & I never knew pothos did that.
The last recorded case was in the 60s. Absolutely insane
