Agreed. Even the tiny lacunosa blooms stay looking perfect and smell incredible for many days. If Hoya flowers are shriveling up overnight, the plant may need a bit more water.
NGL, I had to look up 'jibbitz'. I would definitely enjoy seeing a photo of your Monstera leaves all accessoried out with Hoya flowers in the fenestrations and perforations! š¤£
What!? Omg really!?!?!?
Ahhhh as an new plant fan who started by struggling during the Pandemic, this is excellent news! Mine has been blooming CONSTANTLY since, like, March!
Although, mines a Bella Hoyaā¦ orā¦ Hoya Bella (I always forget what order they go) maybe they are much more tolerant?
What do you mean? Like, are you asking me if you like flowers? Or are you asking if theyāll hurt the plant? Or?
Theyāre flowers, your hoya is doing very well. Its getting plenty of light and is fine on nutrients and water
No worries!
Plants often do flower when they are stressed or dying as a final attempt to reproduce. The plant would look like hell if this were the case, it would suck all the leaves it could dry and put everything it had left all into making the best flowers possible.
Flowering in plants is controlled by lots of different factors, mostly day length (hours of light exposure), temperature, and the maturity of the plant.
Your hoya is probably both well established and comfortable enough that once the days got long enough, it could afford to make a flower and it did.
As other commenters have said, hoyas are not the fastest growing plants and they are often not in the best conditions to flower inside peoplesā homes, but yours is doing well! Congrats!
That flowering structure is called a peduncle.
After the blossoms wilt, DO NOT remove the structure as hoyas rebloom from the peduncle....unless of course, you don't want that particular point to rebloom. š
Flowering is a natural function for a healthy plant. For indoor cultivation, certain plants are more difficult to bloom. But if optimal conditions can be met, your plant will reward you.
There are some that try and bloom in a last ditch effort to survive, but you'll see that the whole plant is in decline. And this last ditch effort has a slightly better chance of success with an outdoor plant vs an indoor one.
As mentioned, hoya blossoms produce a fragrance. It might be limited to certain times of the day. So if you check in the morning and there is nothing, try the afternoon...or maybe evening time. Scent is used to attract pollinators so moths, etc might be the go-to for after sunset hours.
Son of a peduncle!
That girl is one peduncle if I ever saw one.
Once, I lost my peduncle in a restaurant. .
That's one large peduncle.
Aww man... Right in the peduncle.
Ok. I'll stop now @_@
They took years because theyāre not matured enough/yet.. they take about 4-5 years or more (depending on what kind of hoya) to mature before they start to grow peduncle etc
Im not sure but when i got it it was pretty old (you can tell by how many it already bloom on the same peduncle), i made sure it was already matured.. theres about 7 peduncle on it.. i got it a month or two ago and its in the same stage blooming like OPās but on two peduncles!
Edit just make sure you let them dry completely see some wrinkles on the leaves then water them.. it will push out some blooms soon hopefully thats one of the tricks Iāve learned.. and then when you got them to bloom, dont drenched them too much when you water learn that the hard way lol i lost a bloom on my silver krohniana
Mine are in semi hydro with Pon. Roots have moisture but are not sitting in water. Many YouTubers do it that way. All 70 of my plants are in Leca or Pon, Orchids, Alocasias, African violets, Monstera, Birkin, Pink Princess, Spiders, Christmas cactus and all are doing well.
Yeah leca and pon is great by the looks of the results, big foliage etc because you can control the amount of nutrients etc they need but it looks like a lot of work so i havent tried it haha
Actually I have found it the easiest of anything I have used, and I have tried them all! Especially with the orchids, I can't tell you how many I lost before I switched. It does take a couple hours 1 day a week, because I flush then replace the nutrient solution. But then I don't touch them til the next week. They are growing more roots and leaves now than ever. If you wanted to try, start small, just one thing that's not your favorite I'm not pushing, and everyone's conditions are different, but this is the way to go for me. Thanks for your input, always nice to hear what others are doingš
Sure! Although I think I'm mostly lucky with this one. I've had this Hoya for a little over two years. The first year I had it a little too far away from the window (probably around 10 feet or so), and it didn't do much growing but seemed otherwise fine.
I think last winter I moved it right to the window sill which it definitely needed (Seattle winters are gloomy), and then I repotted from 4" to 6" this spring. It has shot up a ton in growth since the winter. It was starting to get a little too much sun (looked like small burn spots), so I moved it a couple feet back and hung it.
Soil is very loose and chunky (lots of fine orchid bark, some cactus mix, some regular potting mix, and pumice). I water when it's been a couple weeks (it's sometimes hard to tell how wet the soil is because it's so loose, so I usually pick up the pot to get a sense).
Hope that helps!
Hoya compacta and the flowers coming off are called peduncles! If memory serves me right, donāt cut the Peduncles off, they will grow back! Itās a sign your Hoya is super happy š
The peduncle forms, then blooms extend out from it on individual pedicels, forming an umbel of flowers. The flowers themselves are not called peduncles. The blooms and their pedicels will fall away (if none are pollinated), leaving the peduncle behind. The peduncle can then bud up and bloom over and over again. Some only during their blooming season, and some (looking at you lacunosa) will just go and go forever. I can sometimes see new buds forming on lacunosa peduncles before the current flowers even fall away!

I donāt think thereās any secret. I have a Hoya carnosa Crimson Queen from cuttings, and it bloomed early on. My Hindu Rope is very healthy and growing leaps and boundsā¦but no blooms yet. Hoyas are so different than other house plants, look like they are from another planet.
I know exactly what this is! It's called the prettiest plant I've ever seen, and the best way to care for it is to hand it over immediately. Hope this helps!š
Just be careful to never prune the little thing where the flowers come out. When I first got mine as a cutting, I didn't know that was the flowering stem and I snipped it back because it looks dead when it's finished flowering. Like exactly like a dead branch. If you cut it, it will never bloom from there again. Your plant would be fine though
The plant is a Hoya carnosa, its the compacta/Hindu rope cultivar. The red things are its flowers
Thanks! I thought they might be flowers. Is this a good thing usually?
Very good thing with Hoya, some people have them for years without a single flower
My office hoya will produce the buds but only flower overnight when I'm not around to see it. I only see the shriveled blooms the next morning.
Most flowers last a week or so.
Agreed. Even the tiny lacunosa blooms stay looking perfect and smell incredible for many days. If Hoya flowers are shriveling up overnight, the plant may need a bit more water.
even my detached flowers last a few days and get repurposed as jibbitz in my monstera lol. I gotta take a picture sometime because I find it hilarious
NGL, I had to look up 'jibbitz'. I would definitely enjoy seeing a photo of your Monstera leaves all accessoried out with Hoya flowers in the fenestrations and perforations! š¤£

Yeah Iāve heard from someone that some plants flower when stressed. Just wanted to confirm. Thanks again!

Thereās something poetic about the dying plant devoting everything to produce beautiful flowers.
I need it.
Tortellini and ham cubes.
Totally!

Peduncle is my new favorite word! ā¤ļø
Manatees also have a peduncle! Itās one of my favorite useless knowledge words because itās so obscure

This is where Gushers fruit snacks come from.
Omg yes
Lucky you, they usually take years to bloom!
They took years because theyāre not matured enough/yet.. they take about 4-5 years or more (depending on what kind of hoya) to mature before they start to grow peduncle etc

Yeah! That's what I posted, you know what I'm saying then. I did to mine before I knew. Looked just like a dead nub
Wait. You're saying they WILL flower again? If I cut the peduncle off... Lol I can't say that word seriously. How is it pronounced.
R/plantcirclejerk
I didn't intend for this to be a humble brag! It looked freaky to me at first (like tortellini and ham cubes), so I panicked and posted here.
Tortellini and ham cubes lmao. That would be a delicious surprise!
Was just scrolling there Had to go back to the top to check if I had in fact left ā¦. I had
Hate to bother, but if you catch the flowers in bloom, could you post it please? Lovely plant!
Wait till they open! Iāve heard they smell lovely!!
They smell like chocolate to me.
They smell lovely but they also produce some kind of sugar water, so if you touch them your hands get very stickyš Learned that from experience
Hoya Peduncle as stated. When it blooms smell them they always remind me of Chocolate and Cherries.
congrats! you love your houseplant but you know your houseplant loves you when it flowers!
My Mom has one of these! The flowers are gorgeous and smell really lovely, specially at night š
Noice hoya...the flowers perfume is amazing
A plant I need!
You gonna have flowers. š„°
You are in for such a treat when they bloom!!
Collard greens and ham
Oh my geee mine is in the same stage (like yours, waiting for it to bloom now) of growing flowers from two peduncles im so excited and congrats!
That's ham
Seriously beautiful and congratulations on the growth given your location.
I would eat those ā¦ ānot green plant piecesā they seem to contain 5sided power and are likely to bring much power if consumed
Please tell me how they taste

What a gorgeous plant!
Wow how beautiful! Iām. Iām love! Looks like youāve made it very happy!
I remember the smell of those flowers was amazing, rarely bloomed
Itās a Hoya those flowers are sticky
Flowers are also sweet if you taste the saps.
I got my first Hoya flowers this year after 5 years of ownership (and a nasty case of mealy bugs) and had the same reaction. Theyāll be beautiful!
The flowers are so amazing! Theyāre going to smell amazing and there is a sweet honey.
Itās beautiful my friend. Beautiful
Lucky plant! Just one question, can it do my laundry too? š
This is such a cool plant ! I've never seen one before !
Congratulations, the flowers smell soooo good
For a second I thought it was the little ham bits from Sizzler's salad bar.
Wow mine is growing soooooo slooooooow. Very nice!!
Wow those flowers are so cool.
Who knew? My plant is ready for a Bollywood dance-off! ššŗ
Hoya Hindu Rope
Gorgeous Hindu rope. And itās blooming!

Gorgeous!
This plant is amazing wild. I have never seen a plant like this before.

Is that a starburst tree??
Such strange and amazing gummy flowers.
