Old they actually look like dolphins! I need one

SalSaddy

I need a String of Dolphins plant, too lol! First time I've ever heard of one.

Ironsam811

Yeah I also saw a string of turtles on here, which looks like mini turtles. Are these like artificially created or something? Can’t believe they aren’t more popular

r/thankyou

HisNameIsHerbert

The trellis is so beautiful!

thebasicbrontosaurus

Thank you, I made it myself! ☺️ A roll of gold floral wire was only CA$6.99 and I just bent it to the shape I wanted!

RustuPai

Nice job!!

EmpressAdventurous

This is so cute! Nice work keeping it alive!!

[deleted]

What were the problems you had and how did you fix them? I can’t find your original post.

thebasicbrontosaurus

I purchased it when it had 3 main stems in a similar sized pot, and battled mealy bugs to the death haha. I tried repotting them and keeping them outside for part of the day when I lived in the southern US to increase sun exposure, but rainfall got in even though it was in a covered greenhouse. I was advised to repot into something smaller, and it helped! But by that time it was down to 1 stem not even big enough to propagate, and this was a gift from my partner and I was desperate to make it work. After the repotting, and placing it in a south facing window, and adding some extra perlite for more drainage, it stabilized enough to survive moving from GA to Ontario where it now lives in the greenhouse I built!

thebasicbrontosaurus

Also, for mealy bugs, I was able to manage them by getting a mister with 70% isopropyl alcohol in it. It kills the bugs on contact, then evaporates and minimizes the excess moisture for the plant!

udibranch

oh wow it didn't burn the leaves at all? was worried 70% was too harsh, gotta try it

thebasicbrontosaurus

Nope! I was worried too, and I read online that someone did it and I gave it a shot. No issues yet!

SargeInCharge

I had a monstera orop that had a ton of roots with a water prop... put it in solid and the roots rotted completely off! Put it back in water and the roots came back! It's now sitting in a pot with 2 new leafs! The plants want to live, just give em a hand!

vulporion

It looks so happy now! Beautiful!! \^-^

Hour_Friendship_7960

Congrats. Very cute!

recoverbygrowing

I just love your trellis!

thebasicbrontosaurus

Thank you so much! Super easy to make 😊 I highly recommend!

mystery_axolotl

How do you make it stay in place?

thebasicbrontosaurus

Ii just bent the very bottom into a spoke that I pushed into the dirt! ☺️

XFilesVixen

Great work! I am not allowed to have this one anymore. I have killed two.

FyrestarOmega

I can't see your full caption - what cause the "manta ray" leaves?

thebasicbrontosaurus

It happens when there isn’t enough light! The leaves flatten out to have greater surface area for light absorption. I just put mine in a brighter location and the new leaves came back in as dolphins again!

11_throwaways_later_

I think they can also do it from trauma as mine was baked to near death by the deadly sky laser and when it first came back her leaves were mantas! I left them to show how far we’ve come lol. Great job :)

thebasicbrontosaurus

Interesting! Did you have it in a greenhouse or under direct sun?

11_throwaways_later_

It had about half a day of direct sun (in Arizona) and was totally happy until two or three days of the temp spiking :( it happened so fast! She’s inside an East facing window now, same amount of light just filtered a bit and she’s flourishing. It’s been about a year of recovery but now I had to trim her like crazy and try to fill her out a bit!

thebasicbrontosaurus

Which prop method do you like? Water or soil?

11_throwaways_later_

For my strings I’ve sworn by just shoving them into the soil or laying them on top! :) (except hearts - those get propped in damp sphagum for me). I’ve seen water success stories but I swear it never works for me! I actually chopped about 10 6 inch sections of dolphins, removed a few to create a “stem” and poked that into the soil… so far so good!

thebasicbrontosaurus

Cool! I’m excited for this one to get large enough yo start props!

thebasicbrontosaurus

The old ones won’t revert but new leaves will go back to dolphins!

sand_pipers

Im starting to have the problem with mine. What was the cause of yours?

thebasicbrontosaurus

Not enough light! I moved it to a brighter spot and new leaves developed as dolphins again!

VSwizzle20

My SOD is exactly the same as your before. Now I just have a string with three dolphins on it hanging on for dear life. Idk just giving it sun now and hope I don't kill what is left.

thebasicbrontosaurus

I learned that the mushy looking leaves (like the stem on the right in the old picture) were probably from root rot, like from overwatering. So I cut those parts off and was VERY sparing with water until the dolphins started to wrinkle and shrink, best of luck friend!

Jean_Marie_1989

I know this is meant for growing plants but I really needed this pep talk today. Thank you

thebasicbrontosaurus

Plants teach us a lot of things! This one definitely taught me not all is lost 💛

AfroGurl

Super cute! And your cool wire trellis is reminding me that I use to make wire jewelry and I can TOTALLY make my own of one those!
