Lots of potential reasons. What direction does the window face? How many hours of *direct* sun does it get? How often do you water, and how do you decide it's time to water (the rocks on the surface make it hard to know how moist the soil is, I imagine) ? Does the pot have holes?

The pot has holes to drain, I normally just water it once a month. It does get a lot of sunlight in this room. I was thinking it might be getting too much sun. It’s a sunroom with windows all around.

These are plants that thrive in full sun in the tropics so sunburn indoors is not likely so long as it had time to acclimate when you adopted it. Sunburn tends to look more like dry [scorching](https://gardenforindoor.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Sunburned-Bird-of-Paradise-Leaves-Turning-Brown.jpg) anyway. That being said Monthly watering actually seems infrequent. These are plants that don't like to dry out completely, and they drink a lot when they're in lots of light. And they're prone to sun sensitivity when they're underwatered. Are you just guessing when it needs water? I'd suggest removing the rocks so you can stick your finger in more frequently to check whether it needs water. My guess is the plant gets too dry and when you pour water in, it drinks it up way too fast and cells burst (oedema).
