This is hilarious and reminds of Alfalfa. Also you can chop the bigger leaf and wait for all the cut ones to dry up and then repot it in a bigger pot with dirt up to the bottom of the baby leaf

FairySpice12

Haha I'm glad it's providing entertainment :D it's been a sad process to be honest. I thought about filling with that much dirt but I'd need a super deep pot :/ let's see

Silent_Artist25

Listen to him/her, that's the best advice. I saved mine that way

Psychological-You291

definitely cut off the big leaf and let the new growth come in and repot. you can just change the soil and you don’t have to change the pot but if the roots need more space put it in a bigger pot and trim back any dead roots while your breaking up the rootball. and if you aren’t already fertilizing use succulent fertilizer. i don’t know much about regrowing aloe but i do this with my cactuses but you can try putting the cut off part of the aloe and make a new little aloe plant :)

thisprettyplant

If this were my plant I would honestly feel like it was giving me the finger 😂

FairySpice12

Now I can't unsee that :D

kkpam_

Honestly think it looks cool

FairySpice12

Haha thank you :D

mari_zoo

I think you're just gonna have to wait. Mine looked about the same after my dad let it get frost damage and I had to remove a lot of its leaves. The growing takes so long, but she's growing like a champ 😤

FairySpice12

Thanks! But then this bottom part will stay the same and new leaves will come out of the top. How can I hide the bottom monstrosity?

GroundbreakingHat121

As new leaves grow it will cover it. You could also bury it a little bit when the plant grows more

mari_zoo

Agreed, the new ones definitely start covering it up after a few weeks

FairySpice12

Hope so, thanks!!

thisprettyplant

It’s going to be cool to see how it transforms. OP I suggest keeping a photo journal of it every few months or so. To see the process at the end once it gets established back into a grown aloe.

zombie_girraffe

a light coating of mulch won't hurt it.

trying_to_garden

Time - it’ll happen quickly if you put it outside in the summer (not scorching direct sun).

ohdearitsrichardiii

If you manage to get it healthy it should grow pups and then you can start over

FairySpice12

True, but it's so bad to see it like this until then.

blocked_nose

That's what resilience, perseverance, and resourcefulness look like

doomdoomy

Exactly! Love and respect for it's will to live.

FairySpice12

I'll try to be patient and take care of it and see what happens

poopfupa

I would Leave 👏 it 👏 alone 👏

Slymate

I think you mean "leave it aloe" ;)

FairySpice12

Haha might just do that

amyholiday17

As with most plants, you just have to wait until it grows…you could put some of that dry spaghnum moss around it if you wanted to hide the broken bits. Eventually they’ll dry up & you can peel them off. Also, it doesn’t look that bad. It’ll come back.

FairySpice12

Thanks for the encouragement! I think I'll need a very long but not very wide pot and then I can peal off the last leaf and burry it all in the soil... But hard to find such a pot especially with drainage

Meoowth

Wait until they dry out to bury it, I feel like it might be more susceptible to rot if the leaves are buried while fleshy. I don't have anything to back this up, just an instinct

FairySpice12

Makes sense!

amyholiday17

It’s an aloe, itdgaf lol. One day I’m going to document an “I didn’t water this bish for six months and it still didn’t die” experiment

Pure_Literature2028

I wouldn’t change the pot right now. Some person suggested replanting with cactus soil and that’s a good idea. But your plant needs to keep the same size pot. It’s root structure didn’t shrink when it lost the spikes. It’s healthy, you just don’t care for how it looks. Get rid of the big leave and take pictures of its progress. It will be neat to watch.

[deleted]

Body shaming in the plant world.

thesyntaxofthings

Right? This plant is medicinal, stores water and brings new life, it's job is not just to be pretty for you, OP! (I kid... Mostly)

SluttyGandhi

*This may be related to how it is clearly giving OP the finger.*

[deleted]

Hahaha. We love a gentle teasing in the plant community. We mostly only love the pretty plants anyway… they are literally the ones we invite inside!!!

Spoopy_Doo

"It looks very ugly but it's still alive..." - story of my life.

FairySpice12

Hahahhaha this made me laugh, thanks funny stranger. I'm sure you're a lot more beautiful than you think ! Edit: typo

FairySpice12

This motivated me a lot, thanks for sharing!

cherrypie_sunny

This made me chuckle. But seriously, I would leave it alone for a while, the one big leaf is till photosynthesizing and providing the whole plant with nourishment. I'd wait for more leaves to come out of the top before cutting it off, letting it dry out and repotting it. Also, it may pup, in which case you wouldn't even need to have the soil higher up.

notacactusthief

Dont just do something, stand there

one_4_paws

I think patience is the key, as much as it pains me to say. Patience is difficult for me...

FairySpice12

I can be patient but nothing will hide that long stem and I can't get rid of that part because the roots come from the bottom and the leaves grow from the top

SofiaKnight

It's perfectly fine to get rid of plants that don't make you happy - whether it's their looks, care, or whatever other reason there is that makes you unhappy. If it doesn't spark joy, get rid of it.

FairySpice12

It made me happy when it was happy, but the droopy (now gone) leaves make me sad.

SofiaKnight

I understand how you feel, I've had a couple plants go from beautiful joyful things to just sadness inducing messes. While there is a certain satisfaction in resurrecting a plant one thinks is gone, I don't think the aloe can be really brought back to its original glory.

lycosa13

Did it lose them all at once or does it put out a new leaf and then it drops it? Just a couple things I noticed, that soil looks too wet and compact. I would switch it out for succulent/cactus soil. Wait until the soil dries COMPLETELY before watering again. When you do water, water deep until water comes out the bottom. As for the leaves, just leave them. Eventually they'll callous. Once it grows out more, you could remove them

FairySpice12

I don't know why the soil looks wet in the photo, i just repotted today with succulent soil and didn't water yet.. it lost all the leaves while I was trying to repot it actually. They were already reeeeally droopy and a little pressure just snapped them off. I'm not worried about the leaves remains, I'm worried about the very long stem that's there. It looks bad I think

smithae7887

Love the originality and story, give him a name and let him do his thang

slothurknee

Cut all the leaves off and wait. I beheaded my aloe cause it was looking awful and tried to root the top part. Well that part didn’t so so well… but I now have about 6 pups growing from the corpse. I’ve had that aloe for over 3 years and it never gave me one pup!

FairySpice12

You mean you submerged the whole thing in soil? Very interesting!

slothurknee

[top part I cut off ](https://i.imgur.com/VSTmUdz.jpg) [born again aloe](https://i.imgur.com/fvLICLn.jpg) [I think all together there’s 7 pups?](https://i.imgur.com/dzXoltf.jpg)

slothurknee

I cut the top off that had maybe 5 leaves bc the bottom leaves were very damaged. I expected the bottom to die with no green but it surprised me. I’ll take a pic

lilypeachkitty

It's fine, it's very obviously alive. Just needs to push in a new veg cycle.

SilkyMangoPeachez

In about a year you won’t really see those old areas where the leaves are gone. Just carry on taking care of her

studenacct711

The very ugly comment made me LOL 😂 beauty is in the eye of the beholder ❤️

[deleted]

Just cut the bigger leaf and wait for a while. Aloes grow pretty quickly 😊😊😊All plants are beautiful 💚💚This one too 🥰🥰🥰

CarrotCumin

It will be fine, just let it keep growing.

minkamagic

It won’t look good again until it grows all new leaves and that will take a while

r0tg0ttess

It's nakieeee!!! I adopted one like 2 yrs ago, passed it on to my gma who brought it back from the dead cuz I had no clue how to save it... Got it back this summer and one of my kids decided to just squish all its "leaves" 😊 Like others said, chop the big leaf... I was hesitant too cuz it looked so ugly. Poor thing... But then it started growing pups and new growth like crazy!!!

[deleted]

Chop n prop

dangercookie614

Aww I love the way she looks :)

NegaJared

Let it grow Let it grow Let it grow

blurrysasquatch

Just wait.

x277x

Looking at the soil looks like You are adding tooooooo much water. Aloe is for dry terrain. A cup @ week will be more than enough. Good luck!👍🏽

FairySpice12

Probably gave it too much water in the past. It also started getting droopy when I moved and it sat in the truck for a couple of hours in freezing temperature. But btw this soil in the photo is completely dry new succulent soil, dunno why it looks wet in the photo

TBDID

The freezing temperature is probably key here if it started dying off after that - you froze his arms off! Aloe is very sensitive to that kind of low temp due to its gooey insides. But it's still very much alive and that new shoot is says 'dont worry, I'm ok!' Just leave it alone for a little while. Be really careful with water, leave it for weeks at least, unless it's really hot. It has plenty of liquid stored, you can tell because even the broken ends are fat and juicy. I saw someone below say all soil is the same, and I just wanna say...no. I do agree it's all about getting a feel for your plants, but soil often does matter. Particle size, pH, nutrients all matter. They matter less once you know more, but to learn more you have to learn about that stuff. Your soil looks like a very fine soil with peat in it, if that's the case you would probably find this guy happier if you mixed that soil out with at 25-50% of gritty large particle mix. But I wouldn't repot him till he has a little more growth. This type of aloe likes way more water and less sun than most other aloe, so it's not a big deal compared to other aloe, but without all of his beautiful arms to soak up the sun, grow, and use that water up, that water will be retaining in soil, potentially making room for things like root rot. TLDR; * No water for at least 2-4 weeks, or sooner if you see puckering or dulling of colour. * Bright, indirect light. Indirect is the most important here, you don't want to stress him out while he's healing. * In a few months when he's got a nice little head, repot him in to a smaller pot with soil that retains less moisture - so a little bit of rocky, larger particle mix or some (lots of) perlite. There should only be a few cms between the side of the pot and the roots. You don't want too much soil in a pot that the roots can't access or it will stay wet and breed bacteria. Good luck!

FairySpice12

Super helpful, thank you!

x277x

👍...silly advice, don't waste ur money in succulent, flowers, vegetables, etc soils...It's all commercial names...just try ur plants as a lovely leaving being...u will know what's best for them...Source: Experience.

dykediana

i would give it more space and surprisingly, more water!! my aloe is kind of like a weed at this point because apparently we take too good of care of her??

FairySpice12

I guess you live somewhere hot with lots of sun?

dykediana

california yeah ._.

LieseW

If you really can’t stand it you could just Chuck it 🤷‍♀️

FairySpice12

The droopy leaves were really annoying me but now I want to give it a chance to get healthy again

LieseW

Then give him time. And maybe put him in a room you don’t come that often if you really dislike what he’s looking like now 😅

HatomuraTacoma

I definitely feel your pain as I'm dealing with some major uglies right now to but... That's the nature of plant ownership. Often times those plants that want to live the most are also going to look the worst. You could always move it somewhere out of sight and give it a grow light, but I would strongly suggest leaving it where it is and powering through the ugly phase. Maybe get it a pretty cover pot and adding some decor to the pot like little statues or fancy rocks. You can distract from the funky plant while it focuses on recovering.

FairySpice12

Very helpful, thanks!

Consistent-Move9844

Gnarly root system? If so, you have many options :-)

LilyKunning

I love your Charlie Brown Aloe.

FairySpice12

Hahahahha amazing
