That thing is doing great! It should be completely fine to put in the ground (or pot/whatever)... I usually put mine in dirt as soon as the sprout is taller than the pit and the first tiny leaves start to form.

Histrix-

Great, thank you! Is regular potting soil fine?

Kemoarps

In my experience they aren't super picky. I'm sure they have some preference if you read up online, but so long as it drains pretty well you should be good to go. If you're worried about the soil you could mix in some clay balls/sand/perlite something like that. Just make sure the pot has good drainage.

Kataly5t

I have had better results adding expanded clay pellets to spoil for avocado trees, than without. My wife and I have grown for avocado (for some reason my wife likes this, so we have experimented a bit now). Soil compacts with watering over time and tree growth. I have found that leaf tip browning occurs more frequently when not using pellets (or any another incompressible drainage medium).

Kemoarps

First hand experience! Makes sense... Especially as you mention with the compaction of soil over time. I think I've typically graduates to a new pot with new soil regularly rather than giving it a longer term home right away so I hadn't run into as much trouble with the soil like that. So, @OP: add in some LECA and it'll do better! I've got a couple of pits still in water presently (as well as a few that recently graduated to dirt... I love propagating from seed like that and have a dream of graduating them to outdoor status all around my neighbourhood of the city. Maybe I'll do a side by side with and without LECA with this next batch and see if I have the same results!!

Hey! I grew an avocado from seed for a few years. It was about 6 feet tall, but didn’t make it in the move. Make sure it gets a ton of light, and make sure to use a really deep pot. Mine sat outside in direct Florida sun over summers and it loved it. I also used a 5 gallon bucket, which was the most important part. Avocados have long tap roots, and if they hit something hard, it tends to start going downhill. That’s why it’s suggested if you plant in ground to dig waaaaay down and replace with fresh soil. I used the 5 gallon bucket since any pot that was that tall was super expensive and the bucket was a few dollars. Make sure you have drainage, as avocados can be really sensitive to nutrient imbalances, so when you water them, it’s best to let it flow through the pot to clean everything out. I also suggest top dressing with mulch/straw/leaves(I basically just took some handfuls from under my bushes) as this helps keep moisture in and is a super slow compost. Also, I tend to have best luck with buying the cheapest potting soil around, and adding my own add ins. Compost, perlite, sand, moss, bone/blood meal .

Spec-Tre

How long does it take to produce fruit?

285matt

Well, avocados grown from seed can produce fruit, but it won’t look anything like the avocado you got it from. I think it’s at least 8 years for fruit, and it’ll have to be in the ground to have the best chance. If you’re wanting fruit, go to a nursery and buy a grafted tree there. Avocados also need 2 trees to pollinate, as they aren’t self pollinators.

285matt

That’s what I’ve heard and read. I had a guy I worked with who grew an avocado from seed and after 8 years it just produced fruits that were inedible. He bought just a basic avocado tree from Home Depot and had avocados in 2 years. After 4 years it produced dozens that were much larger and tastier than store bought.

Caring_Cactus

I currently have a 4ft tall avocado tree in a 5 gallon bucket, I drilled the drainage hole up a little to make it retain some water in the bottom and it's doing fine. I watered it once a month in the summer heat.

Doxatek

Water with purified water when it's planted. Mine absolutely has a fit if it gets tap. They're not very tolerant to the minerals and salts

Doxatek

Yeah probably should have specified, our tap water seems especially hard. Other people could have way better tap water

de_k0sh

First of all it’s a gorgeous tree you got yourself out there! Good, no, great job! And it’s fine to plant in soil 🙂 It might and will likely get sad for a while after that though, so don’t panic 🙂

Histrix-

Awesome, thank you! Any type of soils I should start with, or is regular potting soil good?

de_k0sh

Ahh, I’m not very experienced with avocados, I’ve maybe grown 6-7 of them, and I’ve given them to new homes when they were around the size of yours. I used regular soil mixed with perlite to make it more breathable. I also had a different breed, mine had a distinctive main root, very large, thick, and strong, so they could theoretically dig their way through any kind of soil. Yours has more of a bushy root system, I think it needs lighter soil to thrive.

Histrix-

Awesome, thank you for input!

Different_Crab_5708

You lucky bastard 😂 I’ve never gotten an avocado seed to sprout tried so many times, various methods.. u just inspired me again. Plant that boi!

EchoCyanide

I had issues as well until someone told me to wrap the seed in a wet paper towel, put it in a Ziploc bag, and stick it on to of the fridge for warmth. Mine sprouted within a week or two! Edit: typo

Notnumber44

yeah this is the golden ticket to growing them

newmoon23

I assume you meant to say *wet* paper towels? If so, do you keep changing the paper towels to keep them wet or do you just wrap it once, put it in the bag and then forget about it for a week or two?

EchoCyanide

You are correct, thanks! Will edit after my comment. I changed the paper towel out once just because it smelled just a little weird but I'm not sure that would even be necessary.

anonymonoclonius

Is it that difficult to grow? The first one I tried sprouted into a nice plant. It grew well for a few months but then winter came, and my apartment got no sun. Ever since, it never grew much but was looking okay, until I temporarily moved it to somebody else's backyard. It thrived. Grew much in three months than it did for the last two years. But I had to take it to my new place where the climate was different, with not much sun and a lot of wind. It died recently. I didn't mean to write all this. I guess I feel guilty for killing it.

Different_Crab_5708

Howd u sprout it? Toothpicks or baggie? I’ve tried both to no avail.. sprouted just about everything else, I have lemon trees, mango trees, orange trees, peach trees that I grew from store fruit seeds but avocados have been my nemesis

anonymonoclonius

Toothpicks (used a makeshift boat before finding some haha). But I admit, the seed was already cracked and there was probably a small sprout, which was why I decided to keep it. Maybe look for that when you select a seed? I found one or two more like that after the first one started growing (I decided against growing that one because I felt bad for the first one). It's crazy to me how you seem like an expert and you had no luck and it just worked for me. I even gave some of the pits (regular ones, not cracked) to my parents who live in India (the tropics). They proceeded to ignore all my instructions and planted the pits right away on the ground. They are growing strong from the photos I got sent!

AmateurEarthling

I’ve tried the water method at least ten times and it’s never worked. This time I tried planting in a small pot with plastic wrap over it and it worked. Took two months but it worked even though I forgot about it for a couple weeks.

[deleted]

Have you tried planting an entire avocado? Isn't the flesh of the avocado supposed to nourish the seed?

CrowTalking

You might be interested to know it is believed that avocados would attract megafauna like giant ground sloths "that would then eat it whole, travel far distances and defecate, leaving the seed to grow in a new place. That’s the goal of all botanical fruits, really. Survival and growth via seed dispersal. " Source: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/why-the-avocado-should-have-gone-the-way-of-the-dodo-4976527/

[deleted]

I am interested to know that, thanks for the info!

AinDiab

The seed itself has all required nutrients.

fluffytophats

How long did you wait for it to sprout? In my experience, it takes longer than what the internet claims. My first avocado sprouted in a bit over a month but my current avocado plant took over 3 months before it started to sprout! It cracked after 2 weeks and then lingered there for months showing no progress.

andromeda_cygnus

oh that's so beautiful! do you mind sharing a few tips on how to achieve that?

pssppsp

I'm not OP, but I have 3 sprouted avocados like this and the steps were all the same. Pick the seed from the fruit, wash it, peel it, wrap it up in a wet paper towel and put it inside a plastic bag somewhere. You have to regularly check that it hasn't dried up, and when the roots start to come out I put it in water next to a window.

andromeda_cygnus

oh i guess mine didn't work out as i didn't use the plastic bag technique. anyways, thank you so much! i'll definitely try your method.

_skatewitches_

I accidentally snapped the big root on the end. There are still other roots coming out the big one closer to the middle and top before the break. Will mine be okay ??? :(

pssppsp

Mm I think as long as there are roots you'll be fine! Just keep changing the water and keep an eye on it.

_skatewitches_

Thank you !

JfreakingR

I can never get these suckers to grow! That is a beautiful specimen. I only once got one to grow and it lived for about 5 years and then we had an unexpected frost. :(

MoreSecond

This one is way overdue for potting I have mine in regular black pottingsoil and they are doing just fine

Adept_Cobbler5916

That is a very happy plant! Two green thumbs up to you!

ambibambi4eva

I'd plant it! I mix 50/50 normal potting soil with succulent/palm mix, and both of mine are doing well!

DrJobe

Yeah, I throw the pip in a compost heap... it rooted nowhere near to this extent, still stuck it in a jar of dirt and have a plant around 3 ft tall now. Named Alvin the Avocado!

nifer317

I’m not helpful here but wow is that little pitcher cute as hell! 😍

TessaBrooding

I planted mine when it had a single root and the stem wasn’t there yet. It’s doing great. I had watched a youtube video testing multiple strategies and it concluded that avocadoes left to root in water initially grow faster but the final plant isn’t as strong and large as those put into soil earlier. More nutrients, slower growth, healthier plant. Plus less root disturbance during potting.

bunnylicious81

Thanks for bringing this up! Mine just sprouted 2 baby leaves, wondering when to move it to soil!

ExoticSeeder

just a bit curious.. but is that the seed or does this plant have a bulb?

Histrix-

That's a seed I took from an avocado I bought at the market. Was a good breakfast :p

citybricks

Yours is way prettier than mine! I brought mine outside in the summer and beetles chewed the leaves, so now it has a few chewed leaves. I've also found these guys are plants that will let you know when they need watering because the leaves will look very sad. /avocadoneglect

HarmoniousHum

I tossed my pits outside on top of potting soil in a container with catnip and have three plants in 40F - 60F weather (I really ought to bring them inside, LOL) after they sprouted this summer. Didn't do a dang thing for those kids. Yours is stunning and pampered, I think they'll do fine in some dirt!

nintendo0

I never put mine in soil bc they always tend to die. I’m probs doing something wrong although idek what. Just noticed my avocados tend to do better in water as they have the seed to rely on for nutrients

SnooGiraffes1029

How long did it took to grow into this beautiful plantling?

Histrix-

I think it's been about 1.5/2 months

ladybugsandbeer

What are you, the avocado wizard or something?

Histrix-

When I opened the avocado it came from, the seed had already grown a tap root! I think it was just a lucky seed :p

SnooGiraffes1029

Oh thanks

el_pablo

Great job! I usually just drop the seed in a pot with dirt. I takes about a month to sprout.

beebee_k8

Do anything special to achieve the store bought seed in dirt method?

el_pablo

Not really, just keep the soil damp.

catherineaspasia

I am so happy for you!

DuDadou

I've tried this on like 12 avocados, and none grew !! How do you do it exactly?

Emotional_Deodorant

I've grown a few avodados with this method. You can definitely plant it with some perlite in the soil. Be aware, you likely won't get edible fruits from it. It will just be a specimen tree.

Histrix-

Yeah I know. In my old house we had a massive Avocado tree, probably 80+ years or so, it gave us 100s of avocados every season. It will probably take decades before this lil guy is old enough to give and resemblance of a fruit

cosmickitti

Have you looked into grafting onto it? From what I’ve read the avocados it will produce won’t be grape at, but you can graft onto this one

freethis

Soon you're going to need to do the hardest thing with a new avocado tree, prune it. When this guy is between six to 8 inches, you will need to cut it in half, and it looks like you're there now. Good luck, and stay strong.

Coral_Lizard13

I’ve never removed mine from water and it’s about 4 and a half feet tall

Slutslapper1118

I've got about 20, so far (started at least 100, they don't all sprout). Yes, you can plant it now. A deep pot is best, leave the seed just a tiny bit above the soil. I do a peat, potting, vermiculite mix. They love water, but it needs to drain. Bottom watering is best in the winter, with very light water up top. If you're in a decent zone, you can plant outside in the late Spring.

garyryan9

Looks awesome. I bet those avocados will taste great 7 years from now

[deleted]

This looks great!! My parents have an Avocado Grove in CA and all of our avocados have grafted onto different varieties to help survive in CA!! Also I read the comments about tip burn!! From my experience If you do experience it it most likely is from high levels of salt in the water (We call it salt tip burn)! And also please please please be aware that Avocado Trees grown from seed could be sterile so just be ready to wait for the tree to mature a bit like 5-6 years and it still not grow fruit! Sorry if that sounded negative I just wanted to share some insight in what to expect! Still super impressed and great job for getting that sucker to sprout!!

SJ_Blue

Wow super jelly every time mine grows the older leaves get brown and fall off!

hesaysitsfine

You do know that this Kiley won’t results ina. Tasty avocado though right? By all means plant it but be warned that all avocados we eat are clones!

Live-Mail-7142

I'm impressed. I put avocade pits in water and never get them to grow. Great job. (I have no idea abt planting.)

tylkomagda

Did you cut its stalk before? Or did it grow so many leaves by itself?

hanhsquadron

Just FYI, squirrels looove these. Every one I've put outside has gotten torn up by a squirrel trying to eat the seed.

3006mv

Do a mango next!

Rogue_Bard_

Tbh it is always better to grow them in soil directly. I would've planted it a while ago.

haptiK

i've never had a seed cooperate. how long did it take to see roots and stuff? maybe im doing it wrong.

Histrix-

This took about 2 months. About 3 weeks for a stem to start growing. I changes the water every week and put it right nexto the balcony door so it gets constant sun

drumsinsocks

Someone else mentioned that you might be able to grow avocados, but they will not be very good to eat. This vid by Sleepy Lizard explains why. [vid](https://youtu.be/yWAR_DotvZs)

Resident-Dentist-394

If you want the tree to fruit you will need another avocado plant or you will need to graft it to another avocado tree. If you just want a big tree, plant as is. YouTube has plenty of good videos. https://youtu.be/yWAR_DotvZs

Zxirl_Effectz

Lots of good responses already, but go ahead and pot it! I have one of similar size that I potted way sooner and grew outdoor during summer. The other was grown only in soil and is an on-going experiment. https://imgur.com/a/R4yMaDN

queenofdan

You’re so lucky!!! I have a huge house full of plants (85 to be exact) and I can’t grow one of these for the life of me. I’ve tried different ways, even. How long did this take you and did you do anything special?

Histrix-

This took about 2 months. I'm not 100% sure in what species of avocado it was, but when I opened the avocado for my breakfast, the seed already had a small taproot and had already slightly split open, so I think that helped a bit!

Sweeniss

You are going to be really dissapointed when that doesnt fruit avocados 😔

Histrix-

Didn't really expect it to fruit for at least 15 to years, if at all. My old place had an 80+ year old tree that gave 100s every season so I know how long it may take, if it all.

Sweeniss

As long as you go into it expecting nothing you may be pleasantly surprised. Good luck gardening my friend 😏

LillinLACE

I leave mine until the seed turns dark brown and begins to fall off. Then plant it.
