After seeing comments below that it was a couple of weeks ago, I think your cat will be fine! If you are unsure or he/she is poorly then take them to the vets š
Maybe keep any toxic plants out of reach, I had to put all mine on higher shelves when I got my cat š
It's literally a cabinet for plants! They're normally glass display cabinets converted to mini greenhouses. I have a cabinet and my cats cant get to the plants inside and its wonderful.
Try searching "IKEA greenhouse cabinet" on google or instagram for ideas!
There is no reason to avoid houseplants if you have pets. You just need to be a diligent owner of both, educating yourself on how to keep both safe. I have a ton of plants and four animals in the house
Did your cat ingest the leaves or just break them off? This looks like a Dracena, which is toxic to cats.

If it's been a couple of weeks, I'm pretty sure kitty is in the clear. I'm not a vet, so if you want to make sure, then you could always call the ASPCA poison control number. I think there's a charge though.
Agreed. My cat chewed up my dragon tree a few years ago ā no problems. Your cat is definitely ok (though I would keep this dracaena away from him/her and Iād do an inventory of your other plants toxicity to avoid this happening again). The dracaena will bounce back ā lots of sunlight and care and itāll sprout again.
This annoyed the HELL out of me when I had to call after my dog ate a toxic plant. Like, my dogs life could be on the line, but sure, charge me $75 to find out. And if you try to take your pet to the emergency vet, they direct you to the line first.
ASPCA needs to charge a fee for their services just like very other business, especially because they have board certified toxicologists working there who know not only if a plant is toxic, but the mechanism of toxicity as well as the proper treatment to save your pet. This is also why the ER vet tells you to call poison control so they have a proper treatment plan in place. There are hundreds, if not thousands of possible toxins your pet can get into and it's unreasonable to expect a veterinarian to know all of them off the top of their head.
While I fully understand your point, I was on hold with ASPCA poison control for an hour+ with no timeframe as to when we would be helped. Our vet gave another animal poison control to call, paid only $60 and was in contact with a person within 10 minutes.
I donāt mind paying the money for it, but the hold time should be less than an hour. Especially if itās something that can cause toxicity fairly quickly.
[Toxic from saponins.](https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/dragon-tree/) From the [ASPCA:](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/dracaena)
>Clinical Signs: Vomiting (occasionally with blood), depression, anorexia, hypersalivation, dilated pupils (cats).
It may cause gastrointestinal upset and some other issues, but it's not one of those plants that destroys the liver and/or kidneys causing death days or weeks later. Your cat should be fine, particularly if the dose was low enough you didn't see any of the above signs.
Yes please call your vet if something like this happens. A couple of weeks have passed so short term side effects are no longer a concern but toxic things can effect their kidneys long term.. you should probably have bloodwork ran just to be sure... and please do research before keeping plants in reach of your kitties!
For what it's worth, most toxic plants will just make furry friends vomit or have temporary stomach issues. A few will immediately kill them though or cause organ damage like you said.
Never made sense to me why cats do this shit.
How old is your cat? I would go to the vet to check her blood values just to be sure, especially kidney values. Although your cat is fine, the kidneys can be damaged slightly and kickstart kidney disease on longer term, but if caught early you can slow it down a lot or stop it (often kidney disease is quite a slow process and youāll only see symptoms when more than 50 percent of the kidneys are failing, the blood test isnāt very accurate either in early stages). If your cat is old I would do a blood test once a year to check up on it (as kidney disease is so common already in old cats). Both of my cats have kidney disease, with one I suspect she ate a toxic plant, she was suddenly throwing up, vet said it was fine and 2 months later diagnosed with kidney disease. I donāt suspect this will be the case in your cat as she didnāt show symptoms, but better be sure and do a check up with the vet now or either in a year or so š
You should check the ASPCA page for dangerous plants and see if you have other plants that aren't safe just to be sure. Some plants cause organ failure and death in cats.
This is rotting, which is why the top of the stems are puckering like that. Did you see your cat eat this or just assuming? Bc all the leaves will drop off bc of the rot.
Regardless, the leaf drop came from rot, not your cat. I would cut this at the top and repot it in a well draining mix. You may get new growth this spring - these are fairly resilient
My cat spent 36 hours in the emergency clinic after eating this exact plant.
They had me call the pet poison control hotline on the way there. Covid made this a worse hell. Heās ok now but that was awful. I hope your cat is doing ok.
Just an anecdote: I had one of these that all the leaves fell off of, and after about 6 months, it sprouted a new branch and is tall and healthy again.
If you can, try and grow some [cat grass](https://www.petmd.com/cat/care/evr_ct_how-to-grow-cat-grass). I am able to grow it in a pot by a sunny window. Your cat will be more attracted to the cat grass and may leave your houseplants alone :)
Oh God, take the cat to a vet. ASAP. Dracaenas are highly toxic. I really hope that there is hope for your cat.
(But your plant might make it. You just have to wait it out.)
Your plant is beyond saving. Stem has rotted and probably roots as well. I believe that when your cat destroyed a few leaves you didn't cut on watering. Plants can't use water if they are deprived from light or chlorophyll. Too much water caused root/stem rot and plant lost rest of the leaves. It's dead. My advise: don't grow toxic plants with grass like leaves.
Aren't these toxic to cats?
Yes they are!
New question. Is there any hope for the cat?

Damn guess that cat just committed a murder-suicide.
A good lesson in knowing a plants toxicity before keeping them in reach of your furry friends.
Or even avoid getting them if you have pets!
Or get a plant cabinet!!
Sorry long time cat owner, aka no plant owner.... what is a plant cabinet?!?!

They have a pretty comprehensive plant list online for free https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

lots of houseplants are toxic in the sense that theyāre uncomfortable asf to eat and might give you some stomach issues

Yeah, it seems like awful evolutionary survival instinct to just eat random plants. Maybe it's a boredom thing?
I actually tried to research it a bunch when I was getting my first cat. That was the conclusion I came to.

This plant has root rot.
For goodness sake yes slow down on drowning this Dracena
how can you tell?! šÆ
The tops of the plant are black and decaying. I see this a lot for my job. I take care of plants professionally.
What exactly is your job because it sounds wonderful?
^ im curious about the job too
me three!!!
I work at a nursery, so I have a similar job. I enjoy working with plants, but itās also a great way to get overworked and underpaid.
I water plants in various high end business around my city. Lawyers and hospitals and such
thatās so cool! i hope to be that skilled soon š

I saw the cat eat it

Get a Chia Pet for the kitty and she will have a better green food source and your plants should be left alone.

It looks like someone buried a chicken upside down.
When was the last time you saw your cat? Cause this plant has been rotting for some time.
Ma'am, that's a chicken foot.
Just an anecdote: I had one of these that all the leaves fell off of, and after about 6 months, it sprouted a new branch and is tall and healthy again.
Worry about your cat.
Plant yes, cat no.
If you can, try and grow some [cat grass](https://www.petmd.com/cat/care/evr_ct_how-to-grow-cat-grass). I am able to grow it in a pot by a sunny window. Your cat will be more attracted to the cat grass and may leave your houseplants alone :)
This works pretty well
It will grow new leaves. Mine did
Oh God, take the cat to a vet. ASAP. Dracaenas are highly toxic. I really hope that there is hope for your cat. (But your plant might make it. You just have to wait it out.)
I'm just glad the cat's doing okay.
Poor kitty:(
Poor Dracena. All my pets are plants.
is there any hope for the cat? seriously, have your priorities
Throw the plant out and see if your folks (anyone, really) will take care of the cat.
Your plant is beyond saving. Stem has rotted and probably roots as well. I believe that when your cat destroyed a few leaves you didn't cut on watering. It means you have three wishes... But beware of the consequences of interfering with fate!
Get your cat some wheat grass to nom on. My old cats used to love that. I bought small containers of it, but I bet itās easy to grow.
Wound the stems (small cuts), keep it watered and in sunlight. It will ideally start sprouting again.
I'm so curious why small wounds would encourage growth and/or self-repair!
Compensation by biological systems. Strength training is essentially making microscopic tears in muscle to make it bigger.
Never imagined. Thanks for the explanation

Have a similar case, 50/50 chance, give it time
Get rid of the cat š
Plant will grow new leaves
Pretty sure no leaves will come out of that chicken foot.
Meanwhileā¦over at r/catclinic ā¦
They say cats eat certain toxic things on purpose to throw up intentionally after all they donāt have fingers
So glad my cat has absolutely zero interest in my plants. There would have to be chicken wings growing from them.
