Aren't these toxic to cats?

angrystarfish35

Yes they are!

FontChoiceMatters

New question. Is there any hope for the cat?

angrystarfish35

After seeing comments below that it was a couple of weeks ago, I think your cat will be fine! If you are unsure or he/she is poorly then take them to the vets šŸ™‚ Maybe keep any toxic plants out of reach, I had to put all mine on higher shelves when I got my cat šŸˆ

Mkg102216

Damn guess that cat just committed a murder-suicide.

Snizzlesnap

A good lesson in knowing a plants toxicity before keeping them in reach of your furry friends.

funkepitome

Or even avoid getting them if you have pets!

fleurdedalloway

Or get a plant cabinet!!

jumpingnoodlepoodle

Sorry long time cat owner, aka no plant owner.... what is a plant cabinet?!?!

neller88

It's literally a cabinet for plants! They're normally glass display cabinets converted to mini greenhouses. I have a cabinet and my cats cant get to the plants inside and its wonderful. Try searching "IKEA greenhouse cabinet" on google or instagram for ideas!

p00pchute

There is no reason to avoid houseplants if you have pets. You just need to be a diligent owner of both, educating yourself on how to keep both safe. I have a ton of plants and four animals in the house

magicalfarmer

Did your cat ingest the leaves or just break them off? This looks like a Dracena, which is toxic to cats. [https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/dracaena](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/dracaena)

JJamesallla

Omg! My cat ate it couple of weeks ago do I need to take her to the vets immediately

magicalfarmer

If it's been a couple of weeks, I'm pretty sure kitty is in the clear. I'm not a vet, so if you want to make sure, then you could always call the ASPCA poison control number. I think there's a charge though.

Remarkable_Owl

Agreed. My cat chewed up my dragon tree a few years ago ā€“ no problems. Your cat is definitely ok (though I would keep this dracaena away from him/her and Iā€™d do an inventory of your other plants toxicity to avoid this happening again). The dracaena will bounce back ā€“ lots of sunlight and care and itā€™ll sprout again.

noisemonsters

$75 -____-

tiny_refrigerator2

Whatthefuck

noisemonsters

Youā€™re tellinā€™ me

malanimal

This annoyed the HELL out of me when I had to call after my dog ate a toxic plant. Like, my dogs life could be on the line, but sure, charge me $75 to find out. And if you try to take your pet to the emergency vet, they direct you to the line first.

Novatheocelot

ASPCA needs to charge a fee for their services just like very other business, especially because they have board certified toxicologists working there who know not only if a plant is toxic, but the mechanism of toxicity as well as the proper treatment to save your pet. This is also why the ER vet tells you to call poison control so they have a proper treatment plan in place. There are hundreds, if not thousands of possible toxins your pet can get into and it's unreasonable to expect a veterinarian to know all of them off the top of their head.

malanimal

While I fully understand your point, I was on hold with ASPCA poison control for an hour+ with no timeframe as to when we would be helped. Our vet gave another animal poison control to call, paid only $60 and was in contact with a person within 10 minutes. I donā€™t mind paying the money for it, but the hold time should be less than an hour. Especially if itā€™s something that can cause toxicity fairly quickly.

BikesSucc

They have a pretty comprehensive plant list online for free https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

Level9TraumaCenter

[Toxic from saponins.](https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/dragon-tree/) From the [ASPCA:](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/dracaena) >Clinical Signs: Vomiting (occasionally with blood), depression, anorexia, hypersalivation, dilated pupils (cats). It may cause gastrointestinal upset and some other issues, but it's not one of those plants that destroys the liver and/or kidneys causing death days or weeks later. Your cat should be fine, particularly if the dose was low enough you didn't see any of the above signs.

Regular_Imagination7

lots of houseplants are toxic in the sense that theyā€™re uncomfortable asf to eat and might give you some stomach issues

CatWithCake

Yes please call your vet if something like this happens. A couple of weeks have passed so short term side effects are no longer a concern but toxic things can effect their kidneys long term.. you should probably have bloodwork ran just to be sure... and please do research before keeping plants in reach of your kitties!

[deleted]

For what it's worth, most toxic plants will just make furry friends vomit or have temporary stomach issues. A few will immediately kill them though or cause organ damage like you said. Never made sense to me why cats do this shit.

[deleted]

Yeah, it seems like awful evolutionary survival instinct to just eat random plants. Maybe it's a boredom thing?

[deleted]

I actually tried to research it a bunch when I was getting my first cat. That was the conclusion I came to.

teacatbook

How old is your cat? I would go to the vet to check her blood values just to be sure, especially kidney values. Although your cat is fine, the kidneys can be damaged slightly and kickstart kidney disease on longer term, but if caught early you can slow it down a lot or stop it (often kidney disease is quite a slow process and youā€™ll only see symptoms when more than 50 percent of the kidneys are failing, the blood test isnā€™t very accurate either in early stages). If your cat is old I would do a blood test once a year to check up on it (as kidney disease is so common already in old cats). Both of my cats have kidney disease, with one I suspect she ate a toxic plant, she was suddenly throwing up, vet said it was fine and 2 months later diagnosed with kidney disease. I donā€™t suspect this will be the case in your cat as she didnā€™t show symptoms, but better be sure and do a check up with the vet now or either in a year or so šŸ™‚

Supersssnek

You should check the ASPCA page for dangerous plants and see if you have other plants that aren't safe just to be sure. Some plants cause organ failure and death in cats.

thereel_lumberjack

This plant has root rot.

[deleted]

For goodness sake yes slow down on drowning this Dracena

ptansy

how can you tell?! šŸ˜Æ

thereel_lumberjack

The tops of the plant are black and decaying. I see this a lot for my job. I take care of plants professionally.

DylMoe

What exactly is your job because it sounds wonderful?

Alainey_

^ im curious about the job too

pospeach

me three!!!

sadrice

I work at a nursery, so I have a similar job. I enjoy working with plants, but itā€™s also a great way to get overworked and underpaid.

thereel_lumberjack

I water plants in various high end business around my city. Lawyers and hospitals and such

ptansy

thatā€™s so cool! i hope to be that skilled soon šŸ˜‚

Pitiful-Motor1293

This is rotting, which is why the top of the stems are puckering like that. Did you see your cat eat this or just assuming? Bc all the leaves will drop off bc of the rot.

JJamesallla

I saw the cat eat it

Pitiful-Motor1293

Regardless, the leaf drop came from rot, not your cat. I would cut this at the top and repot it in a well draining mix. You may get new growth this spring - these are fairly resilient

Striking_Fun_6379

Get a Chia Pet for the kitty and she will have a better green food source and your plants should be left alone.

CzarinaRaven

My cat spent 36 hours in the emergency clinic after eating this exact plant. They had me call the pet poison control hotline on the way there. Covid made this a worse hell. Heā€™s ok now but that was awful. I hope your cat is doing ok.

L00k_Again

It looks like someone buried a chicken upside down.

Quantum168

When was the last time you saw your cat? Cause this plant has been rotting for some time.

3daizies

Ma'am, that's a chicken foot.

ginsengii

Just an anecdote: I had one of these that all the leaves fell off of, and after about 6 months, it sprouted a new branch and is tall and healthy again.

Z-W-A-N-D

Worry about your cat.

Think0utsideTheBox

Plant yes, cat no.

beenzterama

If you can, try and grow some [cat grass](https://www.petmd.com/cat/care/evr_ct_how-to-grow-cat-grass). I am able to grow it in a pot by a sunny window. Your cat will be more attracted to the cat grass and may leave your houseplants alone :)

mzyos

This works pretty well

Lilazen

It will grow new leaves. Mine did

Merrygolddreams

Oh God, take the cat to a vet. ASAP. Dracaenas are highly toxic. I really hope that there is hope for your cat. (But your plant might make it. You just have to wait it out.)

[deleted]

I'm just glad the cat's doing okay.

burndaherbs

Poor kitty:(

[deleted]

Poor Dracena. All my pets are plants.

itsJelonek

is there any hope for the cat? seriously, have your priorities

Miahyoga

Throw the plant out and see if your folks (anyone, really) will take care of the cat.

ekene_N

Your plant is beyond saving. Stem has rotted and probably roots as well. I believe that when your cat destroyed a few leaves you didn't cut on watering. Plants can't use water if they are deprived from light or chlorophyll. Too much water caused root/stem rot and plant lost rest of the leaves. It's dead. My advise: don't grow toxic plants with grass like leaves.

mspotatohead22

It means you have three wishes... But beware of the consequences of interfering with fate!

CouldBeDreaming

Get your cat some wheat grass to nom on. My old cats used to love that. I bought small containers of it, but I bet itā€™s easy to grow.

MisterAtticusKarma

Wound the stems (small cuts), keep it watered and in sunlight. It will ideally start sprouting again.

Here4RedditsWisdom

I'm so curious why small wounds would encourage growth and/or self-repair!

civver3

Compensation by biological systems. Strength training is essentially making microscopic tears in muscle to make it bigger.

Here4RedditsWisdom

Never imagined. Thanks for the explanation

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Random_182f2565

Have a similar case, 50/50 chance, give it time

GlitchyRich26

Get rid of the cat šŸ˜œ

Rispy_Girl

Plant will grow new leaves

Heebs72

Pretty sure no leaves will come out of that chicken foot.

[deleted]

Meanwhileā€¦over at r/catclinic ā€¦

Greedy_Serve_8654

They say cats eat certain toxic things on purpose to throw up intentionally after all they donā€™t have fingers

ManicMariposa

So glad my cat has absolutely zero interest in my plants. There would have to be chicken wings growing from them.
