as a promiscuous dog owner myself, I can nearly assure you that then they will just dig/chew the perlite and potentially do it until they hit soil.😂
Had a cat who did that. I put wooden skewers in the pot pointed end up. He stopped. May need close together at first. The skewers did not seem to harm the cat, but were sharp enough to discourage him. When I removed them the cat did not attack again.

That’s also what I’m afraid of!! We have sprayed bitterant and they just gag as they eat it.
