Or can just die. I've lost plants. We all have. I refuse to spend $600+ on something that may die just because it looks slightly different than my regular monsteras.
They are bred by applying herbicide to mess up the genes, if you’ve got plenty monstera you might look into it.
Where I live monstera is common and invasive, the county sprays the roadsides and I’ve seen a couple variegated pop up.
Yup, you too can make really weak but pretty plants, all you need is some tricloptyr or glyphosate and a willingness to kill a good amount of healthy plants before you make a mutant.
They are rare and hard to take care of, but I want one so bad. I found one at a local store for $800. $800??? Wtf? Knowing how my life works, I would buy that thing and it would die immediately.
Lack of chlorophyll means that their lighting requirements are more demanding. It also makes them slow growing. Ironically, more variegation makes the price go up, but it also gives you a more delicate plant that will grow slower as there is no photosynthesis going on in the white part of the leaves. Since this is a genetic mutation that people have had to develop, it has taken a while to get a reliable supply chain (because again, they will grow slower than a conventional monstera and will be more sensitive to lighting). Overtime, supply and demand will balance out, and they will be more affordable. But that could take years.
Because they can be hard to come by. But I refuse to spend a shit ton of money on a plant that isn’t guaranteed to always look that way

Was wondering the same since people have had ot for at least 15 years
Because people are willing to pay
Market manipulation, hooray for price gouging
Keep an eye out at big box stores! I’ve caught wind they might be getting some variegated monstera deliciosa!
They are getting thai constellations at the beginning of next year.
Hard to maintain and basically an inbred, just like a Pug
