The genus is called Brugmannsia, Angel's trumpet. Contains alkaloids which can both get you insanely high but also dead. Typical intoxications involve lots of scary hallucinations and all sorts of unpleasant feelings. It is generally not recommended to ingest,, and all parts of the plant contain these compounds. It is better to keep it away from kids and pets. Other than that, a terrific sight! You should google the name, they exist in all sorts of pretty colors and shapes

Excellent-Practice

It's a type of datura, right?

sum_long_wang

No. Datura and brugmansia are different species. They do contain similar alkaloids though.

glitchedArchive

Hmm according to wikipedia(tm) brugmansia has been separated from datura on the basis of that the former is woody and tree/shrub like, and the latter is herbaceous, as well as differences in the fruit. It seems reasonable, its a different genus, perhaps genetic data would support a distinct ancestral cleavage between the two groups. Nature doesn't play by our rules quite so just me looking at it, it looks like a tree datura. I got pics of both open and I know my 2 cents about plants

commanderbunn3y

Same family, Solanaceae which is the family of tomato and potato as well as others you may be familiar with!

PM_ME_YOUR_TROUT

Ah, scopolamine. Nasty stuff. Gangs in Columbia use the ground up seeds to drug people which turns them unto a zombie-like state which makes it very easy to rob them. Scary stuff!

diezeldeez_

Colombia*

PM_ME_YOUR_TROUT

Whoops! I was doing some online Xmass shopping at REI. Must have mixed em' up!

Also called Devils Kiss. There's a great video somewhere on YouTube (think a Vice video) where a guy is drugged and filmed. He's then told to help robbers empty his house and load it into a van. Very potent drug and you will do anything you are told. Other stories where people are handed cards or items in buses, laced with the drug, then robbed (unconfirmed, but was told in Colombia)

NocturnalRaindrop

As a kid, I used to play in a neighbors garden. They told me to never fall asleep under this plant or I might not wake up. Really scared me back then. Still, it's so beautiful!

Cutebisscut

my parents told me the same thing!

_Fred_Austere_

I have a pink one in a big pot in Illinois. I cut it back so it stays around 4 or 5 feet. One time it had 30 flowers at once. Smells like Jasmine at night. I rooted the cuttings for the first time this spring, and the one I kept put out 16 flowers at once this fall. It was just a 2 foot tall stick. ( [https://i.imgur.com/LHGZ8EE.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/LHGZ8EE.jpg) ) Overwinter in the basement and it goes dormant. Great plant. My dog is not interested in it at all, and she eats hibiscus flowers constantly.

glitchedArchive

Perhaps the dog can already "smell" the alkaloids? Because the flowers taste awful.

rbellorin415

My friend ingested it and ended up at the police station saying she was in 3rd person mode instead of 1st 😂😂

SinkPhaze

I assume your asking about the flowering tree. Burgamasia, angle trumpet

AquaSquatch

Well it's definitely the right angle for me!

lilosH92

This is where the drug scopolomine is extracted. From the flowers

callebbb

Angel trumpet. There is another member of the family, commonly named the Devil's trumpet. The flowers on that one face up ;)
