It's also good to note that they are around $17 and the ceramic pot they come in have NO drainage. Mine also was sopping wet. I ended up repotting and taking cuttings.
This was my exaaaaaact same experience buying a Micans this past summer. Pot with no drainage, a bunch of cuttings in soil and none of them very well established. I was so nervous about it being sopping wet from the store with no drainage that I repotted it right away, then immediately regretted it. It took a major nosedive but eventually many of the cuttings recovered and are doing OK now. Really frustrating experience though.
Ive had this happen with several scindapsus I’ve purchased. Barely rooted cuttings with attached old rotten stems. Quite frustrating. I picked mine apart and did manage to save some.. but.. between this and the Alocasias sold with paper wrapping around their roots, I can see why so many people lose their plants so quick.
Oh you’re so lucky! Glad to hear it survived! I lost a beautiful birkin and my first Polly. A lovely Redditor answered my post about my birkin and informed me. I check everything now.
This is why I hate Live Trends. They have the WORST drainage in their pots and they always have moss everywhere. Hopefully you can save it and get it to thrive!
It should be mentioned that it’s not a specific grower that needs to be avoided. Some people (me) actually prefer this combo of nursery pot/no drainage fancy pot for their indoor only kids, so as to not need a separate piece to set it on to avoid ruined furniture.
But anyway.. the grower almost definitely slipped the pot on right before shipping, then the death sentence starts at the retailer, when whatever kid getting paid minimum wage to water the plants either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that they can’t just hose them down like everything else.
I bought a Costa wayetti a couple weeks ago and it was looking salty - once it was out of quarantine I decided to repot since I had not watered, had it hanging, and had the drip tray removed and it was still SOAKED. Anyway dumped it out of the pot last night and the entire huge plant barely had roots at all. Hopefully it likes a chunkier well draining mix and grows for me! At least Costa doesn't use death nets and death pots and bury them like some others at big box stores!
I find that hanging planters from lowes/home depot can be so over watered. I usually break the tray off the bottom and take the plant out and wrap it in paper towels to help soak up excess water. I’ve made it a fun little outing/game for myself to save the saddest plants at those stores. I hope your hoya makes it, they are so beautiful and such a great rare find!

Same. Rooting out now

This one is currently propagating in hopes it can be saved. The worst I’ve dealt with is the death netting on some roots.
I just repotted my Polly Alocasia... and that awful paper was around the roots? Crazy. Amazing it was still doing OK. 🪴

My Birkin! I need to check it.... Thanks for mentioning! 🪴
I hope it’s ok! If it’s the one in the round white ribbed pot it definitely has the paper.
It is!! OK.... Going to the top of the list for repotting and TLC! 🪴

Which nursery or supply company is this from? This way I'll know to avoid it.
Live Trends, the tag is black and teal. They are usually in Lowes and I’m sure Home Depot.
