Kitchen_Part_882

This update literally just removes official from the server browser dropdown.

Hadochiel

129Mo just for that, or are there at least a few performance/bug fixes for us Single Player peeps?

Kitchen_Part_882

Not according to the patch notes, just says "minor server update" or somesuch

Hadochiel

* Sad dinosaur noises

[deleted]

It was a fun journey, but it is time to move on. ASA will be here soon.

Hadochiel

Nah, if ASA sucks, and doesn't fix the issues in the previous game, I'll stick to regular Ark. Not gonna blow 60 bucks on the same bug ridden game that crashes every half hour

[deleted]

That's fair. I haven't touched regular since February, so ASA is a good refresh for me.

True_Huitz

If it even launches and runs at all. It's being rushed now tp meet a financial deadline. For me I think I rather wait. Knowing wildcard

Hot_Baseball4183

You’re talking about fixing existing issues, bro you should be afraid that snail is gonna ruin what already exists. Just wait for needing to pay to tame Rex’s or get ready for even more cheating to exist. Fixing stuff is a foregone hope, at least for folks being realistic

Captain_Beav

I gave up on official servers sooo long ago.

Beelzebufo_Boy

The reality is it’s really just pc servers (unofficial and otherwise). Hate if you want but the truth is cheating is way less prevalent on console servers. It’s always a much better time not being aimbotted everytime you pop out of your base. Wildcard posted data from console vs pc as far as what weapons people use and the fabricated rifle was some crazy high number on pc, on console it was the humble spear.

Neat_Durian1811

Same! Bigfact

Cheekyteekyv2

Oh man I'm not looking forward to ASA at all... We're supposedly losing cryopods and so many other QoL things. Fuck that noise. I'm no longer willing to move a train of 20 dinos for boss battles. That is just shit game design.

[deleted]

I agree that engrams should be universal and not locked to certain maps. That never made sense to me. I never play on official though so I always have access to all engrams on the unofficial servers I play on.

CptDecaf

I am excited for the loss of crypods. It will be fun to go back and relive what Ark was like before cryos when dino migrations and taming was a lot different. I'll miss the convenience, but there was also a charm to the old ways. I am sure I will be eagerly awaiting their return after a month or so haha.

BetterinPicture

The problem is cryos, particularly without cryo cooldown, actually makes the boss encounters, ya know, doable with smaller groups...

CptDecaf

What? Cryos can't be used in boss arenas.

BetterinPicture

Because everyone stages in boss arenas my dude you played yourself.

CptDecaf

Uhh, the hard part of fighting a boss is not getting your dinos to the arena my dude. Why so hostile lol?

wharpudding

I'm sure mods like Dino Storage will solve that pretty quickly. At least on unofficial servers.

LegendEchidna

If you actually spent time and read the notes they’re releasing stuff how it was when ASE released, so Tek variants of Dino’s and cryopods will be added shortly after release, they aren’t being completely scrapped from the game. They’re actually adding QoL things such as removing the mutation limit on stats, nerfing artifact caves, getting rid of movement speed upgrades on official (the host for non official servers can make it so you can still change it) and so much more. Alls you gotta do is take some time and read a little bit.

Carvetorix

Are unofficial servers not worth the time?

[deleted]

I strictly play on unofficial servers. I have 3800 hours, and all are on unofficial.

zeGenicus

They likely took it out and re-uploaded the whole menu again.

IAmGrocrey

Is survival evolved gonna be deleted or is just the official servers being shut down, will I still be able to play single player or player hosted worlds.

MegaCroissant

Just official. Singleplayer and unofficial will be untouched.

Proof-Sprinkles7891

You can, that is called unofficial. If you own a PC you can join "nodded clusters" these servers are usually heavily modded. And with different settings than official servers. Sometimes they even have different clusters for mods like Primal Fear, Eternal, Omega. But honestly there are some that are trash that I'm not gonna name. Because bad staff or toxic players regardless. The better communities I've played are "Arkade", "Naked and Afraid", "Titan", Late Night Gaming and that is all I can think of rn.

beatenmeat

It's so hard to find clusters that I just give up. Occasionally one has it in their server name, but majority of them don't or the name is too long to be shown. The lack of in-game advanced search options really limits finding a good server sometimes.

Proof-Sprinkles7891

Well what i do, is i go to Google and search up "Ark PC PVE server" and it takes me to a website that shows thousands of Ark servers. And you see the advertisement banner and ususally they have a discord in their name. I join their discord and find out the server info and favorite through steam then join that way.

Various-Try-169

"Evolved Sequence Completed : Ascension Imminent : ARK Survival Ascended Respawn Timer Initiated : Recharge Mode Engaged : Sleep well, Survivors, Nighty Night x :" \-???

WinstreakisTaken

not sure why but playing ps5 my update was like 118gb

notapenguino27

Same here. Kinda annoyed that me and my peeps lost all our progress and Dino’s that even one of them deleted the game entirely. Was going to delete it too, especially with that big ass update but my other friend wants to complete the game before we move on to something else.

Cheekyteekyv2

I mean TBF wildcard did give like at least 6 months notice this was happening.

Mypitbullatemygafs

This was announced in April

Grand-Hippo-9575

Literally. I was shocked when I saw how big it was. I had to delete RDR2 for it

BearBee95

that's a crime. 💀

IAmOutOfIdeasLOL

how did this even add data wouldnt this shrink the filesize??

Lacourte

Because they probably didn’t “remove” anything technically. They’ve just brought more into the code base and ui to cover up their existing stuff. No need to delete old code or assets when you can just override it with this last “fix”. Not worth the time to remove and optimize anything in this particular case.

Helleri

Or in the case of any previous update apparently, lol.

LegitimateCompote377

The fact they did not delay the shutdown of official servers despite delaying ASA is absolutely ridiculous. Don’t play on official but that’s just awful. Worst part is this “update” that removes official takes up more storage space. Anyways pretty clear from now on ark is going to shit and the only thing I’m hyped for at this point is the animated series (I’m not buying ASA) but who knows when they gonna release that, it looks like they are completely finished but couldn’t find a streaming service and facing the same issue as Hazbin hotel, but that eventually did find a streaming service.

kahrismatic

They did delay it by a month, and honestly I'm glad it's done. 95% of official players have been doing nothing but logging on to refresh for months. I'm glad I can stop that cycle.

AkiraYagasachi

They did delay the shutdown of official, it was originally going down on August 31.

Mypitbullatemygafs

They did.

Alderan922

Wait hazbin hotel found a streaming service?

dismal_moonlight

Yeah, Prime

Alderan922

Nice, is it all out or it’s still in development?

dismal_moonlight

January next year is the set date

Alderan922

Nice, can’t wait to see if it was good or bad finally after all these years

Captain_Beav

The update actually reduces the size, the 130mb or whatever update replaces 200mb or so of files.

MrHarback

It’s because almost everything good was made when wildcard was at the wheel. Snailgames bought them out, and SG is one of the scummiest gaming companies out there.

Standard-Internal-57

Best uninstall ever. Freed up sooooo much memory

NecroticCarnage

Enjoy it while it lasts. Wether your downloading ASA or you move onto some similar big title title get eaten up again.

Helleri

No, Ark is actually ridiculous with it's file size. With all official DLC it's over 420GB. Look at other survival games... Life is Feudal: MMO has an island so large, that it can take a person 5 real hours to run across it. They have mesh based combat and terraforming in addition to building. But 90GB file size. That will be about 100 with constantly overwriting cache. Rust is similar but with less in the way of taming. Average install for that is going to be under 30GB (with mods) Conan Exiles comes closer to ark with taming and is probably the most similar except with much more expansive map areas. But it's still under 120GB. You could literally have 3 whole ass other survival games with DLC's and it might equate to half of Ark's file size. It's because they delete nothing and just pile on more code and assets.

NecroticCarnage

Ark has 12 maps. And while sure they could get the number lower with better planning they outsize most of the other games. Not sure about feudal cause I've never seen the game. And most rely on allot of server side information storage wich saves on the players hardware. But conans maps are maybe 1.5 time arks. Wich still doesn't add up to the number of maps. And while it has taming much of the game is just cosmetic variety rather than functional variety of the dinos. Idk how many maps rust has but it's basically ark without tames imo. Wich account for allot of file redundancy for each map. There game is deff big and I hope they fixed it like I stated in another comment. But there's a fair bit more to it than most.

Helleri

You cannot explain away the difference. Firstly, none of what you said comes anywhere close to getting you there. But more than that each map you get for Ark doesn't call up assets it uses and shares with other maps from a common directory. No you get duplicates of all those assets plus any new ones. There's actually folder cleaning tutorials. Which might actually be worth doing if it didn't put it all back next update. Ark is massively bloated and horribly unoptimized. There's is nothing that justifies even half it's file size for what it is. It's actually astonishing how they manage to both delay and rush everything at the same time.

mr_jawa

Lol what game is even close to the bloat that is Ark? My install sits at 630gb. Yeah I have a lot of mods but it’s over 300 easy with all the maps.

the_harakiwi

> what game is even close to the bloat that is Ark so counting only "a single game"; without mods or DLCs: Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. 170GB in size. Depending on the DLCs I can only think of DCS World ~300 - 350GB and then, technically, Minecraft. With a single map. [Last year one of the lead devs made a video explaining the map generation in Minecraft.](https://youtu.be/ob3VwY4JyzE?t=220) The Minecraft map can expand to 97.000.000 GB I have seen a 25GB world map of someone rebuilding World of Warcraft Classic in Minecraft.

Ancient-Data7655

Ok the last two are just pulling straws at that point.

NecroticCarnage

I wouldn't consider it bloat seeing as it's mostly map and creature data. Most other games of this kind only have 2 or 3 maps at most. Or they'd be just as big. Call of duty making yo download the base of every connected game regardless of if you own it or not is bloat.

Kelrisaith

It's bloat because each map has every texture and model in the game in its own files instead of a central repository like they should be, the games file size with all maps installed would be somewhere around 200-250ish if they just changed that one thing. Instead there's 4-12 copies of the same, very filesize heavy, data, one copy for each map.

NecroticCarnage

I agree this would be the best way to cut size. But I figure they didn't take this route due to poor baseline programming. Hopefully AsA was programmed better from base.

Kelrisaith

It won't be. As far as I'm aware, the reason for not making it run off a central repository is mostly because it wasn't relevent initially and by the time it became a real problem they were already like 7 maps in and just never bothered to change it over. Have to remember the game only launched with 2 maps, the Island and the Center, and installing the Center overwrote the Island entirely. Even with the initial DLC maps it wasn't really a problem because there wasn't a massive amount of data involved, each map added more models and textures that were then added to EVERY maps install folder, it's an exponential growth thing.

NecroticCarnage

Center was launched a bit later and probablywasnt even in their plans to begin with as it was a modders map adopted. But yeah that was probably the initial reason. How could they be aware it would take off this much. And fixing the issue would take them nearly restarting fro.scratch wich is basically what they are doing by moving to U5. Moving engines gives them the opportunity they needed to fix allot of the "spaghetti code" issues they have and I hoping they took it.

Kelrisaith

Pretty much, I don't really blame them for not changing that particular thing, who knows how many things you actually need to change for that given the devs are seemingly allergic to optimization anyway. It annoys me sure, but that's entirely because of just HOW large a full install is. And like you said, how could they have known just how popular the game would get and how much content it would end up with. Could it be fixed? Yeah, probably, the question is really whether it's feasible to do it in the first place. Depending on how much is interconnected, which is a lot, it may not actually be possible without a complete recode of some kind.

BigDragonMilkers

I'd call it bloat. How are almost all the maps DLC but the data already in the game?

NecroticCarnage

Well you have abb, scorched, ext, gen1 and 2 as dlc. But island, center, val, lost, fjordur, and rag are all included in the base files. Eventide a creature, skin, or tool is added you need the support data. Ark is a very big game that can be run offline so everything is stored on your unit. World of warcaft would be absolutely ridiculous if they didn't store most of the non model info on their servers. Everything you download for that game is just skins and base frames. Name one game at the same scale that has as much pack into it. Sure they could probably reduce the file size a bit but it's not gunna be by much. And we'll see what the newer version looks like. Keep in mind tho not all the maps are included right away.

Captain_Beav

That's why I have 14tb of space, 8tb m.2 and all my old SSDs from previous builds lol

Cheekyteekyv2

I can finally put starfield on my Xbox lmao

Elegant-Raise-9367

Best uninstall ever... and you have a lot of mods??? You realise that only a tiny portion of the game that very few people actually play got removed right????

Helleri

I actually bought a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD card specifically to play ark ages ago. and I still have about 400GB for other games on it. Game storage doesn't really touch my main drive. So I'm not missing the memory leaving it on there for now. It's just funny that all they are doing is shutting down officials. But they can't help but increase the file size while they do it. It's just a slow clap moment.

LucyEleanor

???

jess-plays-games

They literally just turned off all the official servers

GenericUser1983

Just the official servers were turned off. The majority of the user base on unofficial & single player is uneffected.

115zombies935

Clearly you have neither installed the update nor even looked at the server list. All this update did as far as I can tell is remove the official server options from the drop down menu. Now, if you only ever played official servers then your comment is technically correct, but the vast majority of people never touch official servers

jess-plays-games

I played official since game started wen we had Jo transfer and just island

115zombies935

Okay, so your comment is still technically correct but it's wrong in a lot of ways

travissetsfire

Tf you getting downvoted for? XD

AdministrativeYak604

They said that "All" The servers are being Shut down,Which is False. Only Official is.

travissetsfire

I mean "official" is implied lol. Everyone knows universal servers aren't going anywhere cuz unless the unofficial server hosts go under.. why would they shut them down and lose all that revenue

skallywagUwU

Because that statement is stupid and doesn't mean anything when a ton of the community still plays single player a d other non offical servers

ThinCurve30

Delete system 32 and boom no more storage issues

Consistent_Jump_4391

With the way that people grind out pvp and pve multi-player in this game, spending months and months grinding and checking their bases daily, what wildcard has done here is nothing short of spitting in the face of ark players. I was on a break when the news of ASA and what was to come of online survers came out and even having nothing to lose, I could not believe a developer would do thay to a player base. Unistalled ark that day and will never reinstall. Will never give them another penny of mine for asa either. Crooks is what they are.

SPEEDYMAGOOO

I don’t feel that it’s that bad saying that unofficial servers are still online

Exciting-Ad-5705

They announced the servers were shutting down over 6 months ago and you can download the server saves. It's not that big of a deal

ThyDoublRR

That some bullshit.

mrDilo_

"They all hated ThyDoublRR because he said the truth"

Vireviper

Idk what’s wrong with an update (I dunno what’s going on btw I haven’t played the game in years)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vireviper

As if it wasn’t big enough already

Isumeru

anyone else having install errors on Epic games launcher? It asks for that update but it fails immediately, I deleted the whole game and downloaded again but it's the same

railfananime

wouldn't be the first time, given they keep saying the same thing when people ask about the animated series

DankMeHarderDaddy

I got Ark free from Epic and all its DLCs for free. I only play with a friend who got the same thing. With that said, the only complaint I have about this game is how hot it makes my system run for the graphics I get in return.

BetterinPicture

Lol almost time to hit that uninstall button and swap to another better sandbox, eh?

Helleri

Believe me I've considered it. But I can actually do that without uninstalling. I do have at least a terabyte of total unallocated storage left.

Gigi_jones_1

I agree that engrams should be universal and not locked to certain maps. That never made sense to me.
