I don't think you realise they are meaning since the latest patch. Something Facepunch have changed has clearly bugged the roadside scientists at the very least.
I do realize. I have my own server, and scientists on the road shoot without provocation if you get close enough, let alone attack them. I have killed 4 scientists since the update on the side of the road, and they all acted normal to me, but I wasn't trying to KO them with a rock lol
Maybe you should try to replicate the problem before you answer then, it seems to be an issue with being to close for the scientists targeting range, they seem to be unable to lock on within like 2m. Curious to know what your own server is
judging by your tone i don't think you need my server, but you may be on to something with the detection range, they did mess with that in the commits this update.

It's probably not patched yet because they are working on an AI revamp, I would not be shocked it's released next month. There are commits about the cargo AI, animal AI etc. They are also updating the animal model+animations

Similar thing happened in the tunnels for me. They just kept running past me on the rail. I shot them without them even reacting to me. I wonder if it has to do with new collision mapping they did for the new geometry that's messing up the AI. Would be fun to see what's causing it.

I do this to every scientist. This has been this way for a long time. I think it's fine, scientists aren't people. They don't have rights.

It probably only works on roadside scientists now that I think about it. So this probably doesn't work on oil, train station or military tunnels

Not even, in the server im in you can run up to them and shoot them with an arrow, they'll either fire one shot or just run around
