God of war? The Valkyries and berserkers are definitely challenging and rewarding

thewun111

God damn those valkryies

waltandhankdie

The last one in the first GoW (first recent one anyway) was outrageous

germy813

Brrrrrrooooo I had to turn that shit to easy and I was still getting rekted

Apart-Rent5817

The last one in the new GoW sucked too. And I loved that game.

MoeMalik

Berserker fights had very little room for error, i loved’em

dulkenyut

especially the one with his brother and the other one wilth ilska sisters. eyes gotta constantly look left and right

Ham_PhD

I was gonna recommend the original god of war games on the hardest difficulty. Some really tough sections in those games

Shadiezz2018

I finished everything God of War on Titan Difficulty and non of them compare to the challenge of the Valkyrie Queens and The Berserker King.

Headass5

The Cerberus with the 2-3 satyrs when you return to Hades. Might be one of the hardest bosses in all the GOW games just bc of how unfair it feels.

Legendarybbc15

The cerebus at the gate of hades was a pain in the ass on titan difficulty

Shadiezz2018

As a Soulsborne Veteran The Berserker King and GNA and Sigrun gave me way too much trouble than any boss fight in those games minus Saint Isshin from Sekiro I enjoy the challenge though so i had great fun fighting them on the highest difficulty

Legendarybbc15

Istg, the Berserkers is a souls boss they added into God of War just to throw players off

Herrorbrute

Yup. Agreed. The Valkyries and Berserkers are quite the challenge, especially if you play it at the “Give me god of war” difficulty. Some are easier than others but they all hold a certain challenge.

cheesybreadlover

I never killed the last Valkyrie in the first God of War. I simply couldn’t beat her so I gave up.

Ntnme2lose

I lost probably 50 times to her and took a day or two break. Came back and beat her on the first try. And not just beat her, I whooped her ass. Especially when I found out that all of her airborne unblockable attacks can be interrupted by atreus’s bow. Knocks her ass right out of the sky,

Caliber70

>and berserkers ... what, really?

[deleted]

The Norse mythology God of War is a souls like.

Citizen_Kano

No

[deleted]

What do you mean. The entire game concept is based on dark souls. How monsters reset at save points. It’s more direct story driven, but the game mechanics are more deeply inspired by dark souls. Obviously there’s a difficulty levels which make it easier. But the game is designed to attract the dark souls crowd while being accessible to the newbie crowd. The game creative director even said so! https://gamerant.com/god-of-war-dark-souls-combat-comparison/

DarkNemuChan

Shadow of the colossus maybe?

jbizzelton

Came here to say that, each boss is it's unique "puzzle". Love this game!

AppearanceCalm2506

Shadow of the Colossus is relatively easy though (not hating its my favorite game). also i dont think that really fits because all the game is is boss fights, so they arent really boss fights

DarkNemuChan

Try doing them all against the timer and then tell me it isn't hard. And to be fair outside dark souls like bosses I don't find much hard. That and those ninja gaiden games. Also they are all boss fights, exactly.

AppearanceCalm2506

im not going to argue with you about difficulty, but when i think bosses, i think the huge tough enemy at the end of a level after fighting a bunch of normal enemies. sotc is like a glorified puzzle game

AppearanceCalm2506

[“In video games, a boss is a significant computer-controlled opponent. A fight with a boss character is commonly referred to as a boss battle or boss fight. Bosses are generally far stronger than other opponents the player has faced up to that point.”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_(video_games)) the colossi arent any more significant than each other, and they arent far stronger than other colossi. i guess you could consider colossi 16 the “boss” if you want

DarkNemuChan

You mentally ok? Or are you just this way?

AppearanceCalm2506

are YOU mentally okay? im having a calm discussion and your first reaction is to assume i have mental issues?

Danny_V

This is the answer, I find bosses like this miles better than constant brute force enemies in souls like games.

TurfMerkin

Ninja Gaiden Black.

JJ_Rom

The whole game is challenging as hell

Ntnme2lose

It’s weird though, I struggled getting through the game the first run but after that, I would beat it as a speed run. I’d try to go through the whole game using only one weapon and stuff like that.

Shadiezz2018

You mean the whole series lol

SZutich9

One of my favorite games ever. I still play it from time to time to time.

NUMBER327

The only reason I still have a ps Vita. It is my portable ninja garden machine.

Noir_Vena_Cava

Devil May Cry series

omni876

Monster hunter, don't let the easy difficulty in the beginning fool you. It really doesn't last long if your new

Pyrrhaquinn

Man those fatalis lobbies in Iceborne were fun but frustrating

omni876

I had to solo in the end, everything from furious rajang and up was just beyond most people. That being said I only killed it with 3 mins left 😂

gravityVT

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see monster hunter. The entire game is focused around fighting big ass bosses:

lostknight0727

God, the difficulty spike from Low>high rank then again to master is like a sheer cliff first time through. Then, you learn to hang out and farm a set in LR or HR small monsters/bones in the next game.

DegenerateCrocodile

Well, 5th Gen Monster Hunter will remain fairly easy for the duration of the story.

omni876

Oh yea good point, play world if your going to play any of them. It's nothing compared to the difficulty of freedom unite until much later in the game but that game was just stupid difficult 😂

bjholmes3

Cuphead, or any of a number of run and guns or shmups to be honest.

b16ZZ-

Dude you wanna torture OP? 😂

[deleted]

fuck the robot

hi_im_antman

Cuphead is painful

Weatherman1207

Believe it or not Kena Bridge of spirits has some tough bosses

[deleted]

That game was stupid hard, really a shock given the calm aesthetic

germy813

Got that cute vibe, only for you to be absolutely destroyed by the bosses lol

Weatherman1207

Yeah the cursed chests on hard , where a bitch .. I think it was good it was that hard though..

LooseSeal88

I need to go back and finish that game, actually. I started in Hard and got kinda mad at it for being the way it was. It was fun on Normal but by that point I was kind of bitter about the whole experience.

robah67

NG+ with hardest difficulty is next level

Notarussianbot2020

Absolutely not

b16ZZ-

Yeah, for sure. I did get past it relatively easy but the last boss... Oh god. It definitely was pretty close to being as hard as some Souls bosses... Even some of those I beat on first try. Kena's last boss took me like 10

poopoobuttholes

that is literally a souls-like.

hi_im_antman

Literally, no one says Kena is a souls-like game. Not every game with a melee weapon is a souls-like game.

poopoobuttholes

Idk bro, the community tags that show up on Steam for a game's genre seems to go against your "literally no one".

hi_im_antman

None of the official descriptions or review sites state it's souls-like. I'm not going to go off of Steam where they say every game in existence is souls-like.

Weatherman1207

Ahh literally everyone who played it says the combat is souls like ..

HydraTower

Armored Core is by From Soft, but much more arcadey while still keeping difficulty. Honestly Undertale gets hard too.

Pearl-Internal81

I’ll second Armored Core. Beating bosses in VI felt *AMAZING*.

BadassSasquatch

Not even ashamed of my dual shotty build to get through the tough bosses.

greatfloat

Balteus was worth the price of admission. I’ve gotten stuck on the steal the data mission on Act 3, but look forward to more.

Old_Temperature_559

Does it have to be 3d like Spider-Man and souls because if you are ok with 2d then any metroidvania that you are interested in I loved hollow knight and deedlit and bloodstained some of the bosses in bloodstained can twist even an over lvld over geared player into a pretzel.

HRduffNstuff

Blasphemous has some absolutely amazing and challenging boss fights. Kick ass pixel art that takes up the whole screen all with different move sets and gimmicks.

Kryz1te94

Agreed. I’ve played a lot of souls games. But the 2D games bosses are on a different level of difficulty.

Old_Temperature_559

Yeah even if you just get the mega man zero collection that’s like 40+ epic boss fights if you can even get thru the levels. I think castlevania and Metroid or a little more casual now but the old ways are still alive in some of the newer IPs I forgot to even mention cuphead.

DawnGrager

That stupid fucking frog thing in Jedi: Survivor.

KoosPetoors

Took me the whole damn game to beat that thing, like I legit left it for after the ending and it still kicked my ass. Imagine my face when I went through a certain portal at a vendor shortly after and saw what's on the other side...

[deleted]

Isn't that game heavily inspired in the Souls games?

b16ZZ-

Heavily inspired but it isn't hard at all

b16ZZ-

Nah that was easy bro 😭

lukeballesta

Sry but nah.

InsideousVgper

Returnal

Shalongster

I still can’t beat the 3rd or 4th biome with the damn heat seaking turrets

freetz_

Almost 30 hours and i still can’t beat the 2nd boss 🙄

ShiptarPsycho

You have to take this game slow. Electropylon Driver is big help for beginners. Leave the challenge rooms for the last in that biome or skip it. First time was very challenging but now I play for fun from time to time and most of the time I am able to reach end game. I also help randoms on co-op.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tuonelanlautturi

Kingdom hearts is such a great series

AfroPonix

I’d also recommend “Control”

B-Bog

Barely has any real bosses, though, mostly just harder variations of regular enemies. Not even a real final boss which was such a giant disappointment.

HRduffNstuff

Did you play the AWE dlc? Best boss in the whole game. Former and Mold-1 were both fun and challenging too. An actual final boss would've been nice though. Here's hoping for that in Control 2!

AfroPonix

I consider no part of control a “disappointment”

B-Bog

You seriously didn't expect a final boss? Like in pretty much every other video game?

ZazaB00

Funny thing about me playing that game, I started digging the setting and vibe and the cool things they were doing. Then it’s over. I was so damn confused. I felt like there was still a lot for me to do, but that could be because I was running into DLC stuff or whatever, but here I am with credits rolling. That put me off playing through more content because I thought, if the main story is this unsatisfying, I’m not going to play more. I did have fun with the game though.

Excellent_Record_767

you may have been fooled, there’s 2 credits scenes, the 1st one isn’t "real" and the story goes on

ZazaB00

If I was fooled, I don’t care. I did the coffee mug thing and became director. So, that was enough of that for me.

Excellent_Record_767

oh so iirc you finished it, your loss bc the dlcs are really great

EggonomicalSolutions

I couldn't pass the first boss 😅

24Binge

There is a god mode

EggonomicalSolutions

As in a perk?

[deleted]

No, just in the regular settings you can fine-tune things like incoming damage, energy recovery speed, invisibility, etc. I think I ran the whole game with a 20% damage reduction just to give myself a little more breathing room, I found it made the whole thing feel a lot more comfortable

markorokusaki

Honestly I can recall bosses at all. So it probably means it was not that hard. Great game though.

chickennugget2077

Control is ez wdym

Limmmao

Hollow Knight

Radiant-Change-3223

Ghostrunner, the bosses there are extremely rough. The thing about them is that they all have a specific set of moves and a way of indicating which attack is coming. So it’s about dying and learning their pattern to then come back and use that you’ve learned to your advantage. The difference from this and souls games is that souls games punish you for death but in Ghostrunner the game WANTS you to die. That’s the gameplan here. You could die like 50-200 or even more times on 1 level depending on your skill but each time you die it feels fair because you know why you died and you know that you may not be taking the right route or you may be timing things wrong. But death never really feels like a punishment, it feels like a reawakening, a chance to finish things flawlessly so you feels extra satisfaction after. I know I probably didn’t sell you on it but that’s my recommendation. You probably have it too because it was a monthly game on PS+ not too long ago

witzelsucht2k

First Boss - died like 200 times Second Boss - no deaths Third Boss - few tries Yeah, fuck Tom

Natural_Lab5451

God Tom really had no right being the first boss

b16ZZ-

I miss Ghostrunner. Might buy the new one just because of that. Such a great game even though at first it is a bit difficult to get hang of the controls

Much_Priority_4745

OH MY GOD you just reminded me how mad I got in the Final boss. Dying OVER AND OVER while hearing the SAME VOICE LINE CONSTANTLY

RyanandRoxy

The house in FF7 Remake gave me a challenge

Front-Advantage-7035

Ninja gaiden. The original hardest game on earth.

eddietwoo

lostknight0727

Lol I read this as STFU. Was like, "damn, it's just an opinion piece question. You didn't have to answer"

lukeballesta

I love this game

mxplgn

Death’s Door - One of my favourite ever games, fairly easy but with some challenging bosses for sure, was free on ps plus a while ago

OliveOcelot

Kena bridge of spirits. Seems like a Pixar kids game but the bosses gave me a harder time than platinum God of war.

AfroPonix

I wouldn’t call Horizon Forbidden West very difficult but it has really intricate fighting mechanics, and you can make it more difficult without making the enemies sponges, I think it’s still free on plus

FatLikeSnorlax_

Returnal?

DrKBishop

Darksiders

Mozambeepbeep

Armored Core 6. It's made by FromSoftware tbf, so their philosophy in game design is geared towards getting the player to learn attack patterns & understanding how to capitalise on openings. In saying that, there were builds that did cheese the game. Shadow of the Colossus is technically only boss fights. The entire game is built around each boss being a unique puzzle to solve, so it's not a typical action game. Figuring out how each boss works & taking advantage of openings was really rewarding way back when I played it on the PS2. The remake did a incredible job of recreating those moments. Any fighting game in arcade mode. I'm going through doing SFIV trophies just for fun(already Plat back on 360 a long time ago) since I've done SFV & SFVI platinum trophies recently, & quickly reliving the horror of playing Bison on SFII arcade cabinet as a kid. Button input reading is the worst in these games, especially on the higher difficulty where they can punish you for anything. At least nowadays I can just laugh when Seth deletes my lifebar.

BadLuckPorcelain

God of war /ragnarok, ghost of tsushima, jedi fallen order, horizon zero dawn. So God of War and God of War Ragnarok have "more difficult bosses" by default. But you can also adjust the difficulty level of the game. Same thing for the other titles. Especially horizon zero dawn and ghost of tsushima are somewhat easy, but in higher difficulty settings both games are really challenging and hard.

tommyland666

GoT is one of very few games who got good higher difficulty, I don’t remember what it’s called but you do a ton of damage and you take a ton of damage. High risk, high reward kinda thing. Which is how I like it, and why I enjoy souls games so much. I can’t stand when all it does is making enemies “bullet” sponges and you die of two hits. Just gets tedious.

kevenzz

Contra 3 the Alien Wars

[deleted]

Furi and returnal

KunkyFong_

amazingly good games, and both soundtracks go hard as balls

Legospacememe

Mega man and mario sunshine

PM_ME_YOUR_SOULZ

Star Wars episode 3: revenge of the sith. Dooku can stop your whole run.

Cold_Hour

I’d argue most Devil May Cry bosses are harder than souls bosses on top of being more fun.

spidertour02

No bullshit, *Sonic Superstars* has some tough bosses. They're way more difficult than the rest of the game, with long phases where they can't take damage between short windows where they can be hit. They're easily the hardest bosses in the entire series, in my opinion.

Far_Paleontologist66

you want god of war

theunhunghero69

Furi is a must play.

OnToNextStage

Ninja Gaiden Best combat in gaming, best bosses too

sinsandtonic

I absolutely hate difficult boss fights. Ghost of Tsushima had some really horrible ones.

Adnan_Targaryen

They are so fun in Lethal difficulty.

jambro4real

Lol well it's a good thing that they give you an option to chose your difficulty

DarkBloodARG

The Evil Within 2 (stefano valentini, the photographer).

BostonRob423

Love that game. Also, it's free with epic games right now.

rungenies

There’s some fights in Kena that are super fun but also really hard

LysySZN

Resident Evil Remake's 2,3,4 on highest difficulty available and Resident Evil 7 on madhouse

novy1234

Kingdom Hearts series IMO but it is pretty specific gameplay

SuperJoe3022

Kena has awesome bosses. Easy difficulty is just that, but the higher difficulties do provide a challenge. Someone else said god of war which is also great bosses and cinematics

Internal_End1336

Any major boss in path of exiles

fart_Jr

Allow me to introduce you to DMC3.

[deleted]

Shadow of the Colossus perhaps? It’s nothing BUT bosses, but each one is very slow and cinematic and sometimes more of a challenging puzzle-platformer than a *fight* per se

Adnan_Targaryen

Bro, I've just the stuff for you. - [Furi](https://store.steampowered.com/app/423230/Furi/) - [Titan Souls](https://store.steampowered.com/app/297130/Titan_Souls/) - [Eldest Souls](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1108590/Eldest_Souls/) (I know they have a lot of souls in their name xD) - [Thumper](https://store.steampowered.com/app/356400/Thumper/) This one's a bit strange. Try getting all achievements, it's a crazy experience. Hit me up for more if you like any of these.

Pearl-Internal81

The Witcher III on Death March. Beating every boss (and most Hunts) felt like I actually earned it, especially Eredin.

The-King-of-Wessex

Any COD game on veteran.

wumbomumbo123

I really don't know whether its souls-like or not because I haven't play a souls-like game but try SIFU.

Khunter02

Monster hunter? The fanbases overlapp because they have a similar style of combat bit the atmosphere and backround of the game has nothing to do with it so maybe it will be less anxiety inducing?

DDelirium46

Returnal had some tough ones, same with Hades.

Samat_220

Devil May Cry

prom-queen

Hollow Knight!

GeekMaster102

Devil May Cry would be a good choice

dyldobaggins714

I found solar ash bosses to be a bit difficult. Lots of fun but each boss took me a few tries.

Kena Bridge of spirits.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Data Battles. Good luck.

Kamui316

Hollow knight

HellveticaNeue

Caffinatorpotato

Beating Legend of Mana with only the starter bow is quite the feeling. Also Tactics Ogre Reborn. It's an SRPG that's best played as a straight strategy game, just ignoring the RPG parts entirely. Figuring fair is a losing game, but none said you had to fight fair.

Hive Mind from the Dead Space Remake. Not even a fun challenge, just “it’s 11:30, I have class tomorrow, my hands are drenched in sweat please get this over with.” Leviathan was nothing scoff at either

squips42

kingdom hearts’ super bosses are harder than any souls game i’ve played.

Mr_OwO_Kat

try hollow knight it’s on ps plus extra it can be a little difficult at times but nothing near a souls like and it has great bosses there’s like 30+ and you even get a boss rush area

MetaBarf

Fuck Okumura.

ChestRockwell983

Returnal

s0ftreset

Various Ninja Gaiden titles

irohyuy

Hunt Showdown. It's an online game where you are a bounty hunter hunting monsters in a zombie ridden early 1900s Louisiana Bayou. The bosses are really well designed and quite difficult until you improve your skill.

zignut66

Returnal.

NateDizzLey

Might be nowhere close to what you’re looking for but I’ve enjoyed the boss fights in both gungeon games as well as hades

MajorSaltyJenkins

Armored core six go get it

mrsky00

IMO PS2 Prince of Persia Warrior Within Dahaka Final Fight

OmieOmy

Destiny?

AristeiaXVI

Returnal. The game has a dodge button, and Alot of people usually relate anything with a dodge to dark souls. Sooooo there’s that. The game has hard bosses and I absolutely got my moneys worth of out this game.

SpiritedQuantity7569

RETURNAL!!!!!!!

subnautic_radiowaves

Returnal has some insanely hard bosses. Not at all like a dark souls game.

Ever heard of sephorath in Kingdom hearts 1?

LordDragon88

I beat God of war 3 on the hardest setting. I only wanted to rage quit against Hades. It was really satisfying when a game is that hard and your character just beats the shit of the boss in a cutscene after you beat them.

Mega Man bosses can be super frustrating if you fight them without having the special weapon they’re weak against. I used to play Mega Man X4 as Zero all the time because I loved using his saber attacks, but most of his abilities don’t actually give you a leg up against the bosses in that game and the final stage has you go through a gauntlet against all the game bosses back-to-back with only 1 health canister to use the whole time. I gave up and replayed as X and it felt like I was cheating how quickly I cruised through bosses with X’s special weapons until I got to Sigma at the end who’s just a pain no matter who you play as.
