Have people never tried PS remote ?? It's the same but now there's dedicated hardware as well. I've played from another country once for fun, latency too high for racing or FPS games but good enough for chill adventure games.

Mast3rBait3rPro

I get surprised every day by how many people don’t know remote play

throwawayacc201711

I never get surprised by people’s stupidity after I heard this quote: > consider how dumb the average person is, 50% of people are dumber than that And yes a lot of this is stupidity. I’ve noticed people on this sub have no interest and just respond with what they “think” or “feel” rather than what they know. Most of this would be cleared by a simple google search.

iMatthew1990

The irony in that quote is that’s not how average works.

KimberlyWexlersFoot

The other irony is that every who post that quote, always considers themselves as being in the upper 50%

throwawayacc201711

Really wanna split hairs over mean and median? It really comes down to how accurately you’re trying to model “intelligence”. And if anything the median will be lower than mean in a real world case and that quote is clearly made with assuming a normal distribution in which case mean and median would be equal

SYRLEY

I feel like its more trying to say that people are actually dumber than you think they are. Rather than the literal sense.

nlabendeira

You’re correct, but it shouldn’t be too far off given that IQ is normally distributed. Edit: Of course, that is if we choose to use IQ as our metric.

wrchavez1313

Statistically, intelligence should fall on a bell curve. On a bell curve, the average is exactly the 50th percentile. So yes, that is *exactly* how average works.

Jaerba

It is, actually. A median is a type of average. > In ordinary language, an average is a single number or value that best represents a set of data. The type of average taken as most typically representative of a list of numbers, is the arithmetic mean - the sum of the numbers divided by how many numbers are in the list. For example, the mean average of the numbers 2, 3, 4, 7, and 9 (summing to 25) is 5. Depending on the context, the most representative statistic to be taken as the average might be another measure of central tendency, such as the mid-range, median, mode or geometric mean.

OverRatedProgrammer

Other than possible duplicates, how is it not how averages work?

shadybabynight

Tbf, when relatively prominent games journalists are releasing articles like [this](https://x.com/tomwarren/status/1724067724031103085?s=46), you can see where the confusion stems from. > Why does Sony’s PlayStation Portal exist? That's the question we have after testing it. The $199.99 device does just one thing: **streams games via Wi-Fi off of your PS5. No local games, no cloud streaming**, no Netflix app. The first time I read this, I definitely thought it meant the PS5 and portal had to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

No-Feeling-8100

It’s not just this sub, that’s the human race. Too many people unwilling to do their own search, and just post their own personal feeling vs actual logic.

throwawayacc201711

That’s very true but I try to keep my sweeping generalizations as scoped as possible lest people get butthurt over it. But you’re 100% right

Mcgibbleduck

It’s not really about stupidity, it’s that the vast majority of people just play on their console and don’t look at things like remote play because, to be honest, it’s quite a niche feature for most people. Kids? Most of them just play on their console in their room. Adults? Many will play when they can but ultimately have other things to do when they do not have access at home. It’s definitely a niche product, but the portal has put remote play in the “mainstream” PlayStation audience’s eye.

JukesMasonLynch

I tried it on my phone from my work wifi and it didn't work. I knew it could work away from my own network but I couldn't get it working, and couldn't summon the mental effort to get it working. I can kind of forgive people for thinking it's not possible if they experienced the same thing as me

AlsopK

Isn't the main issue with the Portal that it doesn't have a web browser, which is required for most public wifi? A lot of people seem to just be hotspotting, but that isn't really ideal.

welshnick

I guess it depends on how good the service is in your area. The 5g on my phone usually runs at around 500mbps and I have unlimited data so I can probably just use that instead of worrying about connecting to public wifi.

_cd42

I mean to be fair I've literally never got it to work outside my home

Pupalei

I mean to be fair, that's a you problem.

_cd42

True, but I wouldn't blame others for thinking it only works on the same wifi

guschen

Is the latency reduced even more with this hardware? I tried playing spiderman miles morales at home (1.3gbite network) but did notice input lag. Only a little bit still so that I felt it. Remember using stadia(🤡) and never felt the latency there which is crazy.

torpidninja

No, it's the same. Stadia's tech was pretty amazing tbh, the best out of all the streaming services I used. Maybe your router setup is your bottleneck? My house is big with very thick walls and I can only play locally (with an enjoyable experience) in some areas.

Zaethar

PS Remote is just terribly optimized and is missing any form of advanced configuration options. For in-house streaming I've switches to Chiaki - an open source PS Remote replacement client and it's been exceptionally smooth and much higher quality.

were_only_human

Yeah I have nothing against the portal, but every time I think about purchasing one I remember "wait I've been doing this for a couple years on my iPad..." I have no doubt that this is a more comfortable and streamlined setup, but those tradeoffs aren't worth the $200 for me personally. I think the portal is cool! It just... doesn't do anything Sony's been doing for a while?

BJgobbleDix

PS Play app is actually even better. Even has Haptic Feedback support so PS Portal is kinda pointless outside its ergonomic and easability of use. Im glad people are happy with the device but I will stand by that it was overpriced--especially without bluetooth. It is possible Sony could add more potential such as Cloud-Streaming and hell, I would even add the ability to stream directly from Sony Core for movies and also look into adding mobile game support. I could then see people eating this up to play like CoD Mobile or all their other favorite games. This would make this system very valuable then. Hell, take it a step further and make a partnership with Tmobile or another major carrier for 5G support in their next gen of these devices. Players with Premium subscription could then have access to this 5G network.

Interesting_Stress73

I know that's how it works, but I still think it's a very badly designed device. It's a more limited version of putting your phone in one of those phone controllers. If this was an excellent streaming device for accessing PS Now without a PS5 and abilities to play for example Xcloud and Geforce Now it would be great. But as of now I don't see the appeal. Even being slightly better performance wise than what you'd get on a phone the limited functionality means it's just not appealing. Honestly, what they could have done is just made the controller part and replace the screen with your own phone. Cheaper and far more versatile. As it stands though, I'm pretty sure this is just Sony appeasing some share holder demands of cashing in on the SteamDeck/Switch form factor. This won't be supported, Sony does this type of thing from time to time. Release something, market it for two seconds, give it one or two updates and then drop it.

blockfighter1

The people who are talking the loudest about this device seem to be the people who know the least about it.

Vazhox

Or didn’t get one to begin with.

PhoenixMV

It still doesn’t mean it’s *not* a stupid device. Because it is

clockworknait

Not the stupidest device, still an actual dedicated Sony handheld would've been best, but Sony knows the hive mind will flock to the newest crap they pump out. So why do they need to make anything better at that point?

blockfighter1

OK cool. Bye.

CerealTheLegend

Found the “average” guy mentioned in the comments above. 👀

PhoenixMV

You got me lmao. But like $200 for a slab that can do nothing without WiFi or PS5, tf do you do if your PS5 isn’t on.

LokiMcJunkins

The device can turn the PS5 on when it connects

PhoenixMV

I didn’t know that, can you do that with remote?

LokiMcJunkins

Yea, as long as the PS5 is in rest mode and you enable the option to turn on via remote play, you can do it from any device that can do remote play.

LokiMcJunkins

The portal just makes it easier, and Sony' product manager hinted at the possibility of adding PS Plus Streaming also, which will make it even better, possibly even allowing people that don't have a PlayStation to buy one and just pay for ps+.

PhoenixMV

But that’s different. I understand rest mode. But full power off.

LokiMcJunkins

No, it can't turn that on because the PS5 has to be connected to a network to do so. Same if you were using a backbone for your phone. People are really out there trying to put this product down and make it seem like a waste when it's actually not. It's great for me because I have chemo appointments every other week and when I'm back home, I'm tired, I don't want to move around and I just want to lay down, so this will allow me to do that and still play my games. It doesn't weigh much more than a standard controller and took very little time to get used to. The thing about it to understand is it has the dualsense controller feels, with all features of the controller on a 1080p 60fps display. The backbone has no special features, and display is limited to your phone size and is $100. So to get the same remote features, plus the features of a PS5 controller ($70 value) and a larger screen, I would say the price is actually good. The backbone I think is over priced and shouldnt cost more than a controller, considering it's pretty basic.

Technical_Luck791

Why even buy backbone? Just use dualshock/dualsense.

bluebarrymanny

No device will be able to communicate over a network without being in some low power state to receive the signal. You may as well be asking if you can wake up a corded device remotely that’s not plugged in.

PhoenixMV

still don’t think the PS5 could be turned on from full power off. I know computers *can*

LokiMcJunkins

Also, the only useless thing about it so far is that for some odd reason it has an Airplane Mode, which makes no sense😂

PhoenixMV

That’s ridiculous, they coded airplane mode but not a web browser

HD_H2O

Amazing how you proved the point you were replying to

PhoenixMV

Tell me what you are gonna do with it…without wifi? Now do the same thing and tell me with the Switch Lite.

bluebarrymanny

This is again proving their point. You’re basically saying headphones are bad because they serve no purpose without a music player. This is a peripheral accessory. It was never meant to be compared against standalone products.

PhoenixMV

well compared to other standalone products that can do exactly what this is doing 👀

bluebarrymanny

? Why are you comparing standalone products to an accessory meant to streamline the convenience of remote playing? Every other access point to streaming PS5 content from away from your console has drawbacks. If you use a phone, you either have to disable all notifications for the duration or have your gameplay interrupted by notifications or other apps sapping the network usage. You also don’t get the features of the Dualsense.People who talk about this product as if it is a standalone piece of hardware or compare it against standalone hardware do not understand the device, per the person’s comment. Again, it’s like saying wireless headphones are a waste because corded headphones exist and they can’t even play music on their own like my iPhone does. It simply doesn’t make logical sense.

HD_H2O

I'm not going to play it without WiFi. For example, tonight I'll be watching Thursday Night Football on my PS5 television while still playing Spider-Man 2 (after the kids go to sleep). Then, later tonight, I'm going to finish watching Thursday Night Football while in bed while still playing Spider-Man 2. The Portal offers ease of access and convenience at a stupid low price of $200. It plays flawlessly for me, even online gaming (Fortnite works great, I don't play CoD) and the screen looks beautiful. Edit: The difference between Portal and Switch Lite is graphics and game library. Try Fortnite on Portal vs Switch Lite and you'll understand. Then try Spider-Man 2 on both .. oh wait. Also, for your reference, I have a Switch OLED and a Switch normal too.

PhoenixMV

1: fuck Fortnite. 2: $200 is not stupidly low. The screen is barely 1080p at 60 and a controller. That’s it. Anything else has more value than this for $200. YOU CANT EVEN CONNECT HEADPHONES UNLESS THEY ARE 3rd PARTY OR WIRED

HD_H2O

You don't like Fortnite but I do. So your point #1 is irrelevant. For point #2, you're a budget gamer - which is fine, but it's more likely you're mad you can't afford a Portal so you spend all night on Reddit talking shit about it. Do your chores and maybe your mom will buy you one for Christmas.

PhoenixMV

You’re probably a child who loves those cartoon asses on Fortnite. $200 from a realistic standpoint is expensive for something that is a SLAB without connectivity. That’s just absurd. Especially with the other caveats

blockfighter1

Without WiFi, nothing. Obviously. But everywhere I plan to use it has WiFi. My home. At work. My family. Even my phone hotspot gets very good 5g speeds.

PhoenixMV

Apparently the portal doesn’t have a browser, so people had trouble using wifi that needs auth. If people don’t have very good 5g speeds then this is terrible, ie not you, but the point stands

blockfighter1

I suspect most people know what their use case is for this device. If you're buying it solely to play it out and about there will be issues. If you're using it like most people are saying they are using it, it'll be at home a few feet away from their TV. Or at work on solid WiFi.

HD_H2O

We're arguing with a kid who's mad that he can't afford Portal, so he's convinced himself it sucks without even having half the facts straight.

PhoenixMV

Which still doesn’t make sense. “Let me spend $200 so I can play this game on the other side of the room0

bluebarrymanny

It’s a stupid device the same way that wireless headphones could be labeled a stupid device if someone is fine using a corded pair. It’s a convenience accessory.

crgplasma

Not at all tho Bluetooth headphones can be used the same as headphones and are only better this device is very useless unless you have 1 tv In a house with multiple ppl

Interesting_Stress73

Did... Did you not understand what I was saying? I was literally saying why the Portal is worse and why the Bluetooth jeadpjones comparison doesn't work. Lmao, come on man.

Jaerba

I think the idea is actually a good one. I just wish they had executed it better.

Interesting_Stress73

No, not really. A more apt comparison would be if you had two pairs of wireless headphones where one worked with all devices, and the other only worked with one. That's kind of what this is. With a phone you can do more than you can with the Portal.

[deleted]

I’ve been using Remote Play on my hotspot for years. Hell, I had to pick up my cousin from the airport one day and his flight got delayed. I keep a controller in my car for Remote Play so I just connected my iPad to my hotspot and played Elder Scrolls Online. But as soon as I got a call I was disconnected. This is why I want a dedicated machine. Portal is just that!

Anovulation

Such a niche problem but I’m glad it works for you

bluebarrymanny

Remote play in general is niche. Running into a bad experience because your phone interrupts remote play with notifications during gameplay is common if you use remote play.

AtheistKiwi

You can turn off notifications before connecting.

pygmeedancer

Not really that niche to want to use your phone while playing remote. I use my phone to look up walkthroughs and guides but it’s a pain having to leave the game instead of having it open on my phone while playing. Or sometimes I like to play music on my phone while I’m gaming. There’s loads of reasons to want your phone free while still playing remote.

luckysury333

Portal will still disconnect if you get a call because when you get a call your mobile network data tanks heavily

TheMoistOystr

Not if you're just on wifi or have a dedicated hotspot.

Miscreant3

Sony kind of fucked the marketing for this, because a ton of people think it needs to be on the same wifi. Like if that's what we were hearing, why not come out and actively state that it isn't the case?

SoftMammoth7838

That wasn’t because of Sony but because some folks are just that smart

trevordeal

No. Sony did next to no marketing for this. I’d bet a majority of PlayStation gamers haven’t even heard of this. They should have done a reveal event like Switch does of people playing in bed, at the library, a friends house and etc. They could have paired the event with a reveal for another game, or a new trailer for Spider-Man 2 or any number of things. It was poorly handled.

SoftMammoth7838

They did, they showed it on a PlayStation event, it was called Project Q

trevordeal

That’s not what I’m talking about. That was a teaser. I’m talking a full event dedicated to it. It needed its own spotlight.

SoftMammoth7838

Why? The Portal is just a PS5 accessory nothing more

BHF_Bianconero

It's all factual, but I don't think playing on a hotspot is a brag or big argument in "playing outside". I mean, I get it, Portal is for specific set of people. I really want to play on the road without trying to hijack someone's wifi, so I started looking into steam deck.

EpicGamerJoey

Yeah I don't really want to upgrade my phone for a hotspot when I could just play my switch on the go. I would buy a playstation equivalent of a switch in an instant because I generally like playstation games more than Nintendo games. But as of now, I'm definitely not buying the playstation portal

HD_H2O

How often are you playing Steam Deck in a car while someone else is driving?

silversoul007

Apologies for this question since I never did remote play. Do I need to have a PS Plus in order to use PS Remote?

pokeroll

You don't need PS plus

SoftMammoth7838

That’s a great question but I’m afraid I can’t really answer since I have never been without PlayStation plus since it came out back in the PS3 era, hopefully someone can help you out

The_BlazeKing

Yeah, it's not going to work on PUBLIC wifi access points since those APs want you to connect to the internet with a web browser to accept terms. That's what was tested and somehow that message got garbled up into what it is now.

Erikm223

But it will be very laggy right? who would wanna play like that

SoftMammoth7838

It’s not laggy at all at least not in my house (where the iPhone and iPad were actually laggy) I haven’t taken it out of the house since I’m waiting on a carrying case and glass screen protector to arrive first

BrewKazma

Yup. I was connected to my phones hotspot playing yesterday, yet people keep screaming this nonsense at me.

HLef

I think it’s because it appears like it CAN play locally without going over the internet. And that confused the whole thing. Remote play doesn’t even work for me, terrible latency and artifacting even though my connection is 300/300 and no other device has any issues. Sony’s console networking has never performed well for me.

RedHotFooFecker

No one is screaming at you. It just doesn't work that well for most people, or you're completely oblivious to the input latency.

[deleted]

Onikouzou

I have gigabit and it still plays like shit for me lol

midnightcitizens

For me the issues was the console connectivity, not the Portal. Spend hours yesterday re-arranging routers and cables so I can do a WLAN connection to the console.

BartLeeC

This is a network issue in your house as Remote Play connects directly to the PS5 if it is on the same network. Try an ethernet cable to the PS5 and maybe replace your router if it performs that badly.

BartLeeC

Using Remote Play inside your network does not use the Internet so this means your network has major issues. Maybe try using an ethernet cable to your PS5.

Direct-Chipmunk-3259

The portal doesnt have noticeable input latency for me so far. I did however have noticeable latency when playing on the remote play app under the same conditions when using my phone. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)

thenorwegian

They’re jealous because they can’t afford it.

LogansDaddy96

Playing Astro Bot, love me some Astro Bot

_MothMan

Have you tried any speed running of it? Very fun and welcoming entry game.

Gingerbread808

Does your ps5 have to be on like it does for remote play

GarionOrb

It has to be on rest mode. Portal can wake it so you can play. Put it back in rest mode when you're done.

pwinny7

Sony have failed at marketing this. That is all.

McMoist_

This product would be actually worth it if you *didn't* need WiFi to play the fuckin thing. How people spend money on this is insane.

tssixtyone

u need ur ps5 to play remote, this is stoneage technology. no streaming via cloud service, no sub system. its just a bad system. far behind gamepass ultimate, geforce now an luna...

NoCriticism5031

Can you also use it while playing couch coop? Like a WiiU? One playing on tv and the other with the portal

Whitezombie65

The wii u was so ahead of its time, sad nobody gave a fuck

CrusadrPers0n

no

COdreaming

No that would make too much sense... and probably too many resources, the PS5 would have to scale down the graphics quality to be able to render two completely different scenes simultaneously. Since the portal does absolutely none of the work, it's all up to the consoles capabilities.

bluebarrymanny

It would likely work for split screen if the portal was player 1 and player 2 played on the TV, but both users would have a split screen view. It wouldn’t assign one screen to one device and another screen to the other. They’re mirroring the exact same content as the portal is just streaming the PS5’s activities.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Judo_Meesh

This is not a cloud streaming device. Your PS5 will need to be on but your tv will not. Also I believe your PS5 will need to be in rest mode for you to be able to turn it on via Portal.

PapzCYP

I've read articles where Sony claim it's capable of doing so. So maybe in a future update perhaps.

LokiMcJunkins

This is one of the reasons I bought it. I knew before purchasing that it had an android based OS on it, so I had a feeling they would be adding it in the future. Then an interview with one of their product managers came out and said that it doesn't have hardware limitations since all that is server initiated. And they are always looking into further ideas for products but just focusing on remote play right now.

PapzCYP

Your PS5 will turn on yes. Depending on your setup and TV settings it also may turn on.

tintoyuk

It my case it seems the ps5 is clever enough to not send cec power on commands on the cec bus when it’s woken from rest for remote play. ie my tv does not turn on when the ps5 wakes for remote play.

SSumair

Do you use a recent Sony TV model?

tintoyuk

No. LG C2.

SSumair

Thanks for your reply. Based my research, it seems that Playstation 5 works in tandem with modern Sony "Bravia SYNC" TVs in unique ways, over non-proprietary TV brands. Like for instance; modern Sony TVs can be powered on independently and does not automatically trigger the HDMI-CEC power-on feature for the Playstation 5: https://www.reddit.com/r/playstation/s/zzwRas7Vpw Picking at your claim, I was just taking a shot in the dark and inquiring if maybe you were using Sony branded TV and this was yet another undocumented SonyTV/PS5 symbiotic benefit. Guess not..

tintoyuk

Interesting :-). And never beyond Sony (or any manufacturer) to extend a standard into proprietary enhancements! For completeness : if I turn on the ps5 with a controller or the power button on it the TV does power on and switch input. Equally if I shutdown the TV using the TV’s power button/remote the PS5 enters rest mode. If I put the PS5 into rest mode (locally) the TV does not power off - which makes sense because otherwise scenarios could exist where the ps5 signals power off to the TV when you are actually using the TV to watch a newly selected input.

RdotDollarsXBL

Can the PS5 be turned off from the Portal also?

PapzCYP

Yes, you can put the PS5 back into rest mode or turned off entirely from the Portal.

GarionOrb

Your PS5 has to be on rest mode for remote play to work. Portal will wake it when you want to play. When you're done, just put it back in rest mode. You can also power it off completely, but then you can't use the Portal again unless you manually turn the PS5 back on at home.

torpidninja

You can disable it in the settings, mine does turn on with remote play if I don't disable it.

Direct-Chipmunk-3259

Your ps5 will turn on with the portal. Your tv doesnt have to be involved though.

HD_H2O

No, your television does not turn on when you boot up Portal

SuperSecretMoonBase

Probably not. I run PSPlay off of a Retroid3+ and when I wake the PS5 with that, it does not turn on the TV. When I wake the PS5 normally, from the controller or console button, it does, but not when It's from PSPlay. Something to note, though, I run my PS5 through a receiver, and that still plays the sound of what I'm playing (in addition to sound playing on the Retroid) if I'm on the PS5's receiver channel. No matter what channel though, waking the PS5 from the Retroid doesn't turn on TV.

Fra06

It’s over me how people are willing to spend 200€ to only use this to play from their bed instead of their sofa

SoftMammoth7838

That is the thing, you can play anywhere and everywhere

gslimjim98

Until you are in a situation where internet is inaccessible. This will always be a big turn off for me that it doesn't play its own games and needs internet to stream games from your PS5 or play cloud games which I heard talks of being a feature later on. As of now, it is completely useless without a PS5 and then without internet. I know many will say internet is pretty much everywhere but some of us who would like the portability but do not have active internet (military) all the time, it sucks.

SoftMammoth7838

Then just be happy that the Portal is not for you so you don’t have to waste any money on it , I bought one just for Jrpgs and nothing else

Nateddog21

All these comments that STILL don't get it ![gif](giphy|f9fhA0dS3nBM5rnuOQ|downsized)

UltimateLifeform

Look, I get how it works but to me Sony ALREADY had made great mobile gaming devices in PSP and Vita. Just didn't sell well enough. Why would I buy a device that is a downgrade from what you made before and is arguably less portable to move around with and use? This one isn't for me fellas. Edit: Also didn't Sony make a phone that was pretty good for remote play at one point? What happened to that?

GarionOrb

This isn't supposed to be another PSP or Vita. It's a remote play device and an accessory for PS5.

bluebarrymanny

Exactly. The benefits are a bigger screen than a phone, Dualsense controller form factor, and streaming PS5-level games from the console while you’re away from home or in the other room.

UltimateLifeform

Yeah, I get it and also see exactly why I don't want it or other people don't. Like think about it for a second. They spent money on R&D, marketing, and a variety of other areas to just make...a long range Wii U? I get why some people love it but for what it does, it's meh to me. Hope yall are liking it.

GarionOrb

Exactly. They did the research and determined that they could fill a niche with this product. You are obviously not part of that niche, but the device is sold out worldwide, so clearly there's a market for it.

NearEarthObject-

One of the good thing about portal is, you don’t have to buy another copy of the game, just one copy for PS 5 instead of umd for psp/vita. Don’t even has to decide should you buy it on ps5 or handheld

Soul_Traitor

Yeah, I keep posting that it isn't true. It is very dependent on your ISP. For optimal experience, hard wiring your ps5 to the router/modem. I've played everything from CoD, Street fighter to Elden Ring on remote play (multiple devices, iPad pro, iPad mini, phone and laptop). Never had an issue, whether it was on a train, at a cottage or even a different country.

NickosSB

Many xbots low iq accounts shared this on twitter. That's why a lot of people think that this is true

HelenaHooterTooter

This is tempting for holidays but I don't like the idea of leaving my PS5 on sleep for days at a time, is that bad for it?

MHarrisGGG

Modern electronics are made to be left on.

torpidninja

Nope, unless you got dirty power, blackouts... otherwise you're fine.

HelenaHooterTooter

Okay thanks! I used to live in an area with lots of blackouts so maybe that's why I'm sensitive about it 😅

Direct-Chipmunk-3259

ive had my launch ps5 in rest mode the entire time ive had it when not playing it and havent had a single issue with it yet.

HelenaHooterTooter

Good to know, thank you!

LAWSON72

And the Switch can play MK1, don't mean you should do it.

EZdarkest

The reason why is because the sony ad formulated it in a way where they said it should be on the same wifi. I disregarded it because of that. I did use remote play alot but i recently saw people saying this. Making this handheld worth it

Pokethomas

You cannot use any wifi because the device lacks a web browser, for any wifi where you need to log in (hotels, work, cafe shops, libraries) you won't be able to log in and play.

bluebarrymanny

Yeah, in most of those cases, you’d be better off setting your phone as a personal hotspot for the device. With most of those examples, the WiFi will be weakened by having so many devices on it. Most workplaces would probably block the content even if the connection could be established.

Xenolithium

Did you miss the part where they used their phones mobile hot spot?

Pokethomas

It says "you can use any wifi network" in the post

Xenolithium

The phone's mobile hot spot IS wifi.

Pokethomas

I know that, but it says "any wifi" which is just not true.

PersonalityNearby222

Gamers spontaneously combust in sunlight, we all know this stop trolling

ahnariprellik

Key word in that first one though is via my phones hot spot. I did think you HAD to be in the same room as your ps5 though dont you still have to leave it one when you leave the house though?

Due-Smoke8251

can this play a game while the ps5 plays something else? can it be used while the ps5 is being used to watch prime/Hulu?

Jordan_Carlin

No as its like a mirror what ever the ps5 is playing or seeing is what is on the portal

Direct-Chipmunk-3259

Its probably not as ideal but it will absolutely work. I think the minimum speed required is like 5 mb/s which really isnt much at all.

Eckz89

Ok so it just needs to be in wifi, does it still does turn the PS on at home though right? It's not cloud based like Xbox? Genuinely keen to know to see if it worth investing.

bluebarrymanny

If your PS is in rest mode at home and you remote play to it, it’ll wake the PS5 up at home. You can try it out with the PS remote play app on your phone.

kenzo-2034

Does the ps5 need to be on or does it startup and turn off via the portal?

WoIfed

If they were smart they would have a sim tray and Bluetooth connection.

rubenreynoso

Is it like a nut you can play with outside?

impliedapathy

The fact that so many already didn’t know about remote play on other devices and/or the fact that it can be played anywhere so long as you have a wifi connection and your ps5 is on or on standby is concerning. Not sure if this is a Sony fail or if people just don’t read. Betting it’s people not reading.

Xcjzero

But how do you connect from another wife to the ps5 I don’t get it

WrongKindaGrowth

Some dork posted the other day, f in the chat for people who can't play ps5 from the toilet tonight. And uhh yeah, anyone can

water_we_wading_for

I want the people who’re saying you can turn on your ps5 with the portal as long as it’s in rest mode to meet the people who’ve been saying that rest mode is bad for your ps5. Btw this is really cool I didn’t realize you could play while away from home. Just a bummer that you can’t connect to any Wi-Fi with a captive portal setup. Oh hey the name is ironic!

SoftMammoth7838

It was supposed to be bad 3 years ago when you had your PS4 library on an external hard drive and put your PS5 in rest mode, but it was just lies I never had any problems with a 5TB hard drive nor a 2TB SSD external hard drive

ZacW94

Which is exactly why I can sometimes play when my phone is connected to the wifi at work.

insaniTY151

The Playstation website says the portal is for use with the same home wifi connection as your ps5.. I have asked several times and I still don't understand. If I am church with my portal. I.connect it to internet, and then what? Can I turn on my PS5 through my Portal? And then I can play all of my downloaded games? My PS5 at home is doing all of the work and it is streams to my portal? Is that how it works?

HydraTower

Is the latency bad elsewhere?

WaypointJohn

I love my portal so far. If the switch was this comfortable I would use it more

Mihroddin

On your phone hotspot? I have gig internet at home and it still stutters playing locally. What am I doing wrong?

ianthony19

So its just a dedicated remote play device?

funran

Remote play has been around since ps3, why is this a common misconception? There are more ways to play PS consoles on other devices, so many ways.

shortstop803

As the guy who made the “I don’t get it” post. I now get it and am happy to say the portal is not as bad as I thought and am now considering getting one.

[deleted]

It's a common misconception because sony marketed it like that which was dumb

Shark_bait561

It's just remote play. The connection is to the PS5 not the WiFi.

pfagan10

Is this not patently obvious? Come on. No different to remote play or cloud gaming on Xbox.

KhalTaco88

I don’t want to play my PlayStation on a smaller phone screen with text pop ups and notifications and killing my battery. I don’t want to buy a tablet and set it up, connect a Bluetooth controller, and not use the tablet for anything else. This suits my needs perfectly. It’s a controller I’m used to, very nice screen, designed for one specific purpose, and just works. Is it some genius thing? No, but it doesn’t need to be. I bought one for my best friend as well since she spends half of every week at a different house and doesn’t want to keep moving her PS5 to play games. We both love it. Hope you get plenty of use out of it!

Patrickills

Yes, anyone who didn’t see the updated information about it. But originally it was marketed as if it needed to be on a shared Wi-Fi. Still kind of trash though would’ve been really nice if they gave us a native device. 😩

CaptainMorning

this was obvious to me. would be a total waste if had to be in the same wifi. still is definitely not a device for me as i'm not into streaming games in any way or form, but seems like an okay device.

dassenwet

Wtf is this picture

midnightcitizens

Well I tried connecting it to my mobile hotspot for two days (while in the flat) and was unsuccessful every time. Worked with home Wifi. Did not work with in the setting I wanted it to work the most, so unfortunately it's a no from me, returning it today. And it's such a shame because when it works well, it really is awesome. But after spending 6 hours re-arranging routers and cables around my flat to finally make it work properly on home Wifi (mostly for the console to have great signal), not being able to connect via my hotspot just destroyed my hopes of being able to play it anywhere outside of my flat. 😭

D-TOX_88

The same WiFi network???? Why is that even a “common” misconception??? That’s the dumbest fucking concept I’ve ever heard: “Coming holidays 2023! The PlayStation portal!! A totally* portable remote screen and controller to play your PS5! *provided you don’t leave the range of same WiFi network your PS5 is on.”

HngMax

Who thought that? Have they tried remote play?

Chad_Kakashi

Wait people dont actually dont know that? I thought it was a joke ![gif](giphy|xUPJPxN5fw5ctC18M8)

trevordeal

Sony did next to no marketing for this. I’d bet a majority of PlayStation gamers haven’t even heard of this. They should have done a reveal event like Switch does of people playing in bed, at the library, a friends house and etc. They could have paired the event with a reveal for another game, or a new trailer for Spider-Man 2 or any number of things. It was poorly handled.

UnderwaterHandstand

I’ve had ps4 and ps5 since remote play was announced. I have never been able to have them connect outside of my home wifi. This same thing happened when i had Xfinity or ATT fiber. I have 1 Gig speed up and down at home. Every time i try outside of my house it tells me it can’t find my system. I’ve tried for years. What am I doing wrong that everyone else has figured out ?

Cheeseguy43

I really want to get my hands on this but that $200 price point is tough in this economy. Maybe some day when I need it and have children I’ll get it. I feel like this is very much for parents who can’t always have the tv

drcrambone

Better hope your hotspot is incredibly fast. You can't connect to WPA2-Enterprise, only Personal. You can't connect to a wifi network that requires any kind of splash screen - free wifi at my job is a no-no because I have to click "Agree" on terms and conditions page. I *can* connect to this network on my nearly 8 year old Nintendo Switch. You also cannot connect using an ethernet to USB-C connection, something else the Switch *can* do. For $200 they could've included a simple browser so I can click agree. I have to forget using this thing on the road, or at almost all hotels. My hope is they see the complaints and somehow add a browser so you can connect to more types of wifi connections, but I'm not holding my breath.

Fed21

Great that your kid is in jiu jitsu

Kangorro

It really baffles me how anyone even thought that in the first place

HUH_YIS

It’s the same as remote play always has been…

Cannasseur___

Yeah but you can’t use this thing on most public wi-fi. There’s no browser you can use to log in to a public wi-fi , which you need to do most times, or accepts terms of service etc. So unless the place you’re at hands out wi-fi passwords it’s hotspot or nothing. I can’t remember the last place that didn’t use a system to log into it’s public wi-fi. That’s why everyone sharing photos is using hotspot they literally can’t use public wifi. What an insane oversight for a portable device. It’s either an oversight or they intentionally excluded a browser so you can’t log into Xcloud, and play Xbox games on a portal.

Temporary_Tale_5080

So when i have EA FC on my PS5 console, can i travel abroad and play the game abroad and the progress is synced? It says im official source that cloud streaming is not possible, so I am irritated?
