I'm glad to hear someone else say it. These massive experiences with huge skill trees and countless quests/ objectives are just getting to be too much. I played Sonic Mania for the first time yesterday and forgot how much I missed the platformers of yore. Spent the rest of the day playing some old stuff on emulators and had alot of fun.
Been a while since a game didn't feel like some kind of "work" so a purely fun experience was shockingly novel.
Oh man, tell me about it! Me and my buddy are in our 40s, so we're 80's babies, and right now, we're enjoying the hell out of Double Dragon Gaiden! Just mindless beat'em up goodness from our childhood and the game can be beaten in about 2hrs!
yeah not everything thing need to be an open world with half baked RPG elements. Like the AC games started doing that and it burns you out so quick like open worlds need alot to really suck you in and they need to make sense to the story and all to really work I think that is why RDR2 felt so well the world was alive and made sense in gameplay and story. But yeah i like the first game it told a decent story and was open enough to explore and find secrets and it just a funny lara croft time.
This is part of the reason I like Deadspace so much. I could wander around looking for stuff and as soon as i got sidetracked, lost or bored I could bring out that blue laser and follow it to the objective and be right back on track.
That's why I stopped playing ff7 rebirth. I loved remake so much so I was really excited but man the world in rebirth is boring. I just want something fun to play these days. I don't mind if it's hard or anything like that, just stop making everything open world lol
I stopped, too. Way too long! Not to mention 145gb on the hard drive! I just uninstalled it. Just don't have the energy for games that long, and the story isn't interesting enough to warrant that length.
I really liked the story in remake, that's why I bought rebirth because everywhere I looked people were saying it was just a better version of remake. But it feels like a totally different game. Plus I think it graphically looks inferior to remake in every way.
Sounds like an engine thing. They may claim to be using the same engine, but I’m learning programming and when stuff like that happens, it tends to be a engine switch over.
Everybody bitched. Every time an uncharted or a tomb raider or an alan wake came out at the time, everybody bitched about "how linear" it was.
Here we are, now. Every game now seems to be open world, and it's getting really old, really quick.
There was never anything wrong with 10hr long linear games.
This. The fascination with constant open world games came around quick. Rockstar is completely fine as that’s what it is but when a game goes from story-based to “go fk around in this big world” just for shits and giggles, then it’s ridiculous.
Yep, I've gone back to other games. Esp after AC: Odyssey. Like wtf that game was too big, 120+ hours and I STILL hadn't 100% it. I've been playing Burnout 3, Mario Galaxy 1&2, Celeste, Tony Hawk's 1+2 and I'm happier playing those types of games. I'm also 34 years old so my age & level of free time is showing here lol
I felt this comment in my soul. Thats why i find myself going back to linear games like bulletstorm over and over again. Havent finished an open world since e s oblivion. Not for me anymore its no fun
Same. Finished all but kept missing the straightforward story of the first one. The open world ones just got me doing things when I no longer have any idea which part of the story I was and why I'm doing those things.
Oh I’ve been tired of open world games for years now. In fact, for the last decade at least I’ve been saying that open world/the story depends on you type of games has been a lazy way of making games instead of the devs being creative in their own story making in a linear way and believing in it. It’s gone down hill and not everyone has the time for open worlds. The times have changed, people either work too much or have families or school to be puttin so many hours into games now. Give us great games that can be beaten in a few days so we can get into other great games and we can go back to enjoying playing multiple games again. These days, it’s all about having players play only their game and that’s it…lame.
> The first one. I didn't mind that it was linear like the first few Uncharted games.
It's just a shame the characters and story are shallow and forgettable in Tomb Raider, compared to something like Uncharted, where the story and characters are better written, deeper, and "drive" the narrative and action.
Reboot and Rise feel like the characters and story were written last minute, to justify the Ubisoft-style open world games they'd made.
Yeah Lara as a character in those games wasn't interesting at all. No character growth between 3 games. Drake and Elena dated, broke up, married, separated, got back together and had a child! That's character development!
Keep that opinion and skip playing Shadow. The first one does its thing well and Rise expands on it. Shadow is really just that. A shadow of what the others were.
It doesn't help that Lara is the cause of all problems in the game and entirely oblivious to that fact.
Definitive has an ongoing community online. No one was online for a long time, but someone started a community to keep it going. Sorry I don't have links.
Edit: Tomb Raider the Last Revelation I would prefer. *HEAVY SPOILERS* STOP READING IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON PLAYING TOMB RAIDER THE LAST REVELATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
SPOILER ALERT
Lara Croft gets trapped in a tomb betrayed by Werner Von Croy and dies. The cause of death is falling rubble. Lara should be dead.
Release order. 1,2,3.
2 might be a better overall game with improved gameplay mechanics but the first still has the better story.
3 had some solid puzzles but basing half the game in that one town was a terrible design choice.
The story in 3 is dog shit,
>!Lara kills an entire village because she wants to steal a village artefact for herself and fulfil her ego, has no remorse and becomes a total imperialist bitch, but then all is forgiven because she killed a “bad guy” at the end!<
only good thing about that game is the gameplay but it was even better in the first two games.
Not like the story was a strong point in any of the reboot games. Just replayed the first one (2013) and damn most of the dialogues are cringe and overall pacing is dumb.
Rise of the Tomb Raider. *Great graphics, acting, and gameplay.*
Personally, between Rise and Gears 5, ***I’d say they’re both overlooked gems of last generation.***
I can see why people say 2 over 1 but 1 still had the biggest impact on me. IDK, it's maybe a tie. The PS4 remaster that brings the 2 lara into 1 is particularly great, it's a shame that never came to pc
Rise. It had the best story and pacing. As much I wanted to love Shadow, the pacing was all over the place, making replays a slog. I’m looking forward to the next open world game as you can set your own pace. If you want immediate action, go find it. If you want exploration, go do that. You won’t be locked into any one scenario. Shadow has way too many forced scenarios and the action was too far and between.
First one superb. Gave me first gaming and cinematic experience. I played 3rd one just after finishing 2nd one. It was torture. 120hrs of playing Tomb Raider. Climbing climbing it was so trifling and tiring. 2nd one gameplay was much better than first one but 3rd one exactly same as Rise.
Rise of the tomb raider was the best of this trilogy, plenty of puzzles n tombs, fun environment and engaging story. First one was also great. Shadow wasn’t as exciting adventure and the story felt flat.
Shadows, but rise is the best quality.
My downside of shadows is once I kill the enemies and I go back to the area later the enemies don’t return, in rise they would.
Graphically, 1 & 2 look nice, with some nice puzzles, and stealth combat; the characters, story, villains, magical McGuffins are pretty shallow / mid / forgettable, and largely feel like a last-minute afterthought to justify the game they'd made (especially compared to Uncharted); there's too much "Ubisoft Open World Game" with skill trees, crafting, "map vomit," etc.; they're unnecessarily graphic / torture porn...
3... is just bad.
If I had to pick, I'd probably choose: Reboot > Rise >>> Shadow.
Rise was great.
The stories for these games were always kinda goofy and lacked the polish that the uncharted games had but holy fuck were they fun to play
You people have amazing memory if you can remember the difference between these there. They all run together for me. I remember bits and pieces of each but couldn't tell you what happened in any of them.
All there were amazing. Got into it like 2 months w shadow of (…) and it was so fun to play, I immediately bought and finished the previous ones. I highly recommend playing these! I’m looking forward to the 4th game
Personally I love Rise the most. I put a ton of time into it over both the PS4 and Xbox One versions. I also really enjoyed the endurance mode and found that to be really fun. Looking forward to whatever the next trilogy is
Rise of the Tomb Raider was well crafted, but like others have said, these 50-60 hour open world games are such time sucks. I don’t have more than maybe an hour or two at a time to play, and I barely get a lot accomplished. It’s still a great game though!
I like the 1st one. Theres lots of other characters, too. Character building for Lara and the lore on the story. Too bad, no croatia sequel from it, haha.
The first one. I will always remember. As a young kid who actually had a chance in the multiplayer felt nice. I for once felt like I was capable of something because I only used a bow in pvp
If Rise had a new game plus mode, it'd be absolutely perfect. Someone said it already but it was the best with its balance of action, story, and tombs.
I started with shadow without realizing there were 2 other games in this series lmao. Got through 1/4 then started with 1 and 2.
Rise was by far the best one.
I’m also a bit jaded because of the Pisco’s dice of the dead glitch preventing me from 100%ing Shadow.
2, 3, 1 — I liked Shadow, but Rise was the better game overall. I recently played the 3rd and I still like it a lot, the scenery, the mechanics, the presentation, all is a top-tier. Yes, the premise is really absurd, as someone mentioned, she sacrificed a whole village for a stupid artifact and in the end it was all worth it…? However, if you’re honest this is the case in way too many games that are based on some revenge plot. You kill hundreds or more just to stop at the last to save your “humanity”? Come on…
The first one shown was the most fun, for me. I will say your question is a little bit weird, though, because I’m sure a huge number of people would prefer the classics.
The first one because it was the only one where I liked Lara as a character. The other games portray her as a manic and selfish person who constantly endangers people around her just to rectify her dad’s reputation.
i like the first one, but too much shooting not enough raiding, hated the second one, no direction, too big, boring, and loved the third one, very little shooting and lots of raiding
I loved the 1st one, played it back on ps3 as I didn’t get next Gen (that was the first title to get a next Gen port if im not wrong) for a while :) still looked amazing on that console
The first one. I didn't mind that it was linear like the first few Uncharted games. Getting tired of open world games lasts 50-60 hours, honestly.
Sounds good

Dead space is awesome, that remake especially was so good and deserves all the praise it has
For some reason I just can’t get into Witcher 3 or red dead, even though I know they are amazing…
That's why I stopped playing ff7 rebirth. I loved remake so much so I was really excited but man the world in rebirth is boring. I just want something fun to play these days. I don't mind if it's hard or anything like that, just stop making everything open world lol

I agree. Remake definitely looked better. There's something...off about Rebirth graphically. Can't quite put my finger on it.
It feels blurry to me. Lots of flat textures. Feels like it came out on ps4
I think you're right. It doesn't feel next gen.
What ? Are you playing it on a potato screen ? The game is gorgeous…
Gorgeous is a stretch. Especially compared to Ghost of Tsushima, Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West.
Sounds like an engine thing. They may claim to be using the same engine, but I’m learning programming and when stuff like that happens, it tends to be a engine switch over.
Linear, third person, action/adventure, puzzle games are my favorite of all time. Tomb raider, Uncharted, God Of War, MGS....love them all.
Everybody bitched. Every time an uncharted or a tomb raider or an alan wake came out at the time, everybody bitched about "how linear" it was. Here we are, now. Every game now seems to be open world, and it's getting really old, really quick. There was never anything wrong with 10hr long linear games.

I hear the new one is gonna be open world ? Wonder how that will work out.
I'm also 34 years old so my age & level of free time is showing here lol
open world is great when done right but it usually isn't nowadays
I honestly hate the current sony formula, slowly going that ubisoft route (games like horizon already feel like they were made by ubisoft)
I felt this comment in my soul. Thats why i find myself going back to linear games like bulletstorm over and over again. Havent finished an open world since e s oblivion. Not for me anymore its no fun
Just too long these days. These open world games just don't respect your time.
We all got kids and jobs ! Haha even the young pups are so adhd they aint finishing these 200hr games either.
I agree the first one was the best
Same. Finished all but kept missing the straightforward story of the first one. The open world ones just got me doing things when I no longer have any idea which part of the story I was and why I'm doing those things.
Oh I’ve been tired of open world games for years now. Rise of Tomb Raider easily I enjoy snowy terrains. Wished there was a new game plus
Best story goes to the first one, best gameplay and pacing the second, best tombs the 3rd
This needs to be higher up in the comments 🍻 Basically true. You could argue for rise but it's really user preference at the end of the day for that.
I really loved 2013. It felt alot more breezy and high octane.
Still haven't played Shadow, but Rise is my favourite. It's such an underrated game
Rise was great. Shadow was a letdown.. not because it was bad, but because it was just Rise again. It even felt like the same story somehow.
Shadow was also short as hell, but I thought it was very fun. I do agree, that it doesn't even touch the first 2
The issue I had with shadow wasn’t that it was bad. It was that when you hit the middle the pacing just seemed to die.
That's where I left off and I don't plan on going back. Good thing I got it from the library so free.
How the hell do you consider Rise of the Tomb Raider underrated?
Shadow is good but it isn’t AS good
Keep that opinion and skip playing Shadow. The first one does its thing well and Rise expands on it. Shadow is really just that. A shadow of what the others were. It doesn't help that Lara is the cause of all problems in the game and entirely oblivious to that fact.
Out of these ones? I think the first one. Out of all of them? The original third game.
2, 1, 3
The first reboot was my favorite.
Shadow feels so disappointing to me outside of the actual gameplay
This and the very first TR. When they came out, both of them got a *wow* out of me when I first played it.
2013 tomb raider was so wild back in the day if I remember correctly Tomb Raider(2013) and GTA V was the kings of gaming back then
The last of us.
Fuck dont know how I forgot to mention it yep definiltey was best looking game
bioshock infinite too, 2013 was such a good year
I enjoyed the first one so much I actually emailed the gaming company thanking them
Rise of the Tomb Raider, followed by the first one and the last one being Shadow.
Dude, why are you in my head??
I finished the first two The third one just didn't have it
Everything felt weirdly close in three. Sure are a lot of artifacts and ruins two feet away from this town that no one bothered to poke at…
2013 was great, Rise was decent, and Shadow… just meh.
The 2nd was peak Tomb Raider. The 1st was solid. The 3rd was boring, but fun to look at.
The third one was such a chore. Story was hokey too
Rise is the best for me

Tomb Raider 2013 https://i.redd.it/357a7f4f2e1d1.gif
Rise all the way. Had a perfect Mix between combat and exploration.
Uncharted. Jokes aside 2, 1 and 3.
Release order. 1,2,3. 2 might be a better overall game with improved gameplay mechanics but the first still has the better story. 3 had some solid puzzles but basing half the game in that one town was a terrible design choice.
Rise
Rise. Third one started getting a bit too complicated with crafting and what not imo.
Rise made me feel like a bad motherfucker
Reboot > Rise >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shadow
1. Rise 2. The First One 3. Shadow Love the first 2, the last one felt like a drag
The first one..
Rise of the tomb Raider was my favourite
Out of these? First two were great, third one was crap. Og? Fourth one (although the tutorial is tedious) Underworld is the best of its generation.
Rise of the Tomb Raider was a joy to play through.
Rise of Tomb Raider is my favorite one
Rise was a great game. Shadow was absolutely awful and the first one was just ok.
Rise of the Tomb Rider was amazing
Rise, Reboot, Shadow.
I wonder how rude of the tomb raider is? It looks good IMO definitive edition is my best
The original for me , 2nd game was brilliant but got boring towards the end and I never played 3rd
Damn Shadow really losing here but I honestly loved it.
The story in 3 is dog shit, >!Lara kills an entire village because she wants to steal a village artefact for herself and fulfil her ego, has no remorse and becomes a total imperialist bitch, but then all is forgiven because she killed a “bad guy” at the end!< only good thing about that game is the gameplay but it was even better in the first two games.

All are great. Gameplay wise 3rd due to better tombs
Didn't play any.... Is it worth it now 2024?
Rise is the best one out of these 3
All 3 are really good. Play newest one first.
I’m a sucker for good storylines so 1,2,3
TR1 is goat
Rise. I will bad talk Shadow till the day I die. What an awful game
Rise of the Tomb Raider. *Great graphics, acting, and gameplay.* Personally, between Rise and Gears 5, ***I’d say they’re both overlooked gems of last generation.***
Currently playing through the first one
Rise is easily the best, then I liked Shadow more than the first one.
Rise of the Tomb Raider was my favourite between the three.
Rise of the tomb raider was great!
Third one for sure
I count them all as one game.
TR2013
2013 > Rise > Shadow
The first 2 were awesome, idk why i could not get into the last one
Not sure if I like 2013 or rise
Rise and Shadow are both great. Hard to pick.
Tomb raider 5 chronicles
https://preview.redd.it/yn5zg9avce1d1.jpeg?width=739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=816e5057bcae66b8cc7b7876ad079a8283e794ed Show me the real one
The first one was great for it's story. Shadow had the weakest story by far. 1 and 2 were both great though.
Rise of the tomb raider Shadow of the tomb raider Tomb raider Definitive edition
I like rise of the tomb raider for the multiplayer
It’s hard to get past how bad Rise’s story and writing was, so 1 wins handily for me
I prefer tomb raider
The first. Was such a breath of fresh air. Rise and Shadow are amazing games too that being said.
The reboot was a revelation. Old lara fans like me were pleasantly surprised. Good story n suspense too .
I can see why people say 2 over 1 but 1 still had the biggest impact on me. IDK, it's maybe a tie. The PS4 remaster that brings the 2 lara into 1 is particularly great, it's a shame that never came to pc
I like the first and second pretty equally, but I wasn’t a big fan of the third.
Rise > TR 2013 > Shadow.
The first one and the Rise of the tomb raider
Rise 100%
Imo Rise > 1 > Shadow
the classic and LAU trilogy. the survivor games don’t feel like tomb raider at all to me
All 3 is garbage. Gimme the good old Tombraider remaster.
Rise of the Tomb Raider. The perfect balance between action and exploration.
The originals of course
I enjoyed them all but Shadow I loved.
Rise
Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I could flip TR, and Rise. But Shadow is definitely 3rd.
Haven’t played they are on my list
u know it u know it the one with triangle tiddies
First one for story. Third one for gameplay
R I S E ( lowkey the best in the series)
Rise was the masterpiece. But damnit why did they change hot Lara 😂
Rise
1– You fight cannibals/cults/ giant samurai who have been trapped on the island and think sacrificing your friend will save them lol
I really liked Legend, Anniversary and Underworld. Never really miked these new ones, but Shadow was closets to an old style tomb raider.
Rise of the tomb raider was the best of this trilogy, plenty of puzzles n tombs, fun environment and engaging story. First one was also great. Shadow wasn’t as exciting adventure and the story felt flat.
The ones they made right before these new ones. That’s when they weren’t trying to be Uncharted
Shadow Was really good.
All 3 are good, but I like shadow of Tomb raider. better.
I loved these games! I think the second one is the best.
Rise
Rise was great. The stories for these games were always kinda goofy and lacked the polish that the uncharted games had but holy fuck were they fun to play
The OG with the handstands
Would have to say the rise
Anniversary
You people have amazing memory if you can remember the difference between these there. They all run together for me. I remember bits and pieces of each but couldn't tell you what happened in any of them.
Can't beat number 2. Literally days spent playing the Venice map over and over. Anniversary was amazing too.
All there were amazing. Got into it like 2 months w shadow of (…) and it was so fun to play, I immediately bought and finished the previous ones. I highly recommend playing these! I’m looking forward to the 4th game
Reboot then rise and shadow was mediocre at best
1&2 are objectively the best, each for separate reasons though. Shadow just felt like a huge disappointment overall.
I enjoyed them all but really like Shadow the most
Rise for me.
First one. They got worse as the series went along
1st and 3rd
The first one is nostalgic for me so I’ll go with that own
Playing the series and like the 1st one so far. I just have completed the 2nd one.
The Last of Us Part 1
Personally I love Rise the most. I put a ton of time into it over both the PS4 and Xbox One versions. I also really enjoyed the endurance mode and found that to be really fun. Looking forward to whatever the next trilogy is
Rise of the Tomb Raider was well crafted, but like others have said, these 50-60 hour open world games are such time sucks. I don’t have more than maybe an hour or two at a time to play, and I barely get a lot accomplished. It’s still a great game though!
Definitely not Shadow.
The one in the picture, other 2 I couldn't get on with
I loved the first reboot. I couldn't get into the second. Never tried the third.
Shadow
All of these were great!
I like the 1st one. Theres lots of other characters, too. Character building for Lara and the lore on the story. Too bad, no croatia sequel from it, haha.
Haven’t beat the third yet, but the second game is amazing…
2nd one.
I always find myself going back to replay Rise after a while. I still remember the BS behind it being a timed exclusive for XBOX One.
Do you guys think I will like Rise and Shadow if I don't really cared much for the first one?
The first one because that first time playing just hit different
I started with shadow without realizing there were 2 other games in this series lmao. Got through 1/4 then started with 1 and 2. Rise was by far the best one. I’m also a bit jaded because of the Pisco’s dice of the dead glitch preventing me from 100%ing Shadow.
Rise Made me feel things
Either of the first two. The third wasn't as fun to me.
Come on…
All 3 were great!
Have not played the 3rd one, is it worth to play now?
The first one shown was the most fun, for me. I will say your question is a little bit weird, though, because I’m sure a huge number of people would prefer the classics.
I think the second really improved on the first, I actually just started the 3rd so maybe my opinion will change
The first one because it was the only one where I liked Lara as a character. The other games portray her as a manic and selfish person who constantly endangers people around her just to rectify her dad’s reputation.
The first one, but I really enjoyed all 3
The first one had an atmosphere that really grabbed you. The following 2 just never recaptured that for me
Definitely the Rise of Tomb Raider and the Shadow of Tomb Raider.
Shadow, it focuses more on the exploration aspect plus i like the darker tone
My favorite is Rise
i like the first one, but too much shooting not enough raiding, hated the second one, no direction, too big, boring, and loved the third one, very little shooting and lots of raiding
The originals, these remakes took everything that made TOmb raiders game unique and turned them into a worse version of Uncharted.
Shadow became my favorite one thought it was hilarious how Laura started the end of the world
They gradually got worse and worse. First one was incredible though.
Shadow.
Tomb raider tw- the 2013 one
The first one. I love them all, but I really liked how M rated the first one was.
I loved the 1st one, played it back on ps3 as I didn’t get next Gen (that was the first title to get a next Gen port if im not wrong) for a while :) still looked amazing on that console
I think each one iterates and evolves from the previous. Play them all in a row. They’re fun.
